5-16 Taking the sick Horse from the Qazi
Satguru ji thought to himself: “Shah Jahan is unwise. He made a mistake. He disrespectfully took the horse of the Guru. He did a bad thing by snatching the horse today. He will take other things from the Sikhs. The Sikhs will lose faith in the Guru. They won’t bring gifts for the Guru. They will think that the Turks will take their things away from them, as they are powerful. They will be upset and without hope. I need to make Sikhi grow but this will discourage others from being Sikhs. It seems like Shah Jahan will not be my friend. A conflict can break out at anytime. I need to take the horse back and leave Lahore.” In this way, Guru ji thought.
Shah Jahan received the horse and called for it. He was waiting to see the horse. When the horse came, he was really happy to see it. He took the clothes off and rubbed his hand on the horse’s back. He was impressed at how beautiful the horse was. He tried to mount the horse but Guru ji controlled the horse’s mind and made it turn around. The Badshah backed off and said: “I won’t mount it today. It is tired. Let the horse rest. Take his saddle off. Massage it and give it food. I will wait 2 or 3 days to mount it.” The Umraavs heard this and praised the Emperor: “you are fortunate. You get all the expensive things. They come to you by themselves, even if someone tries to hide it from you. Look how nice this horse is. It was hidden with a dirty cloth. We found out how good it is when it ran.” The Badshah gave money to the people who brought the horse. He said to his servants: “serve the horse all the time and tell me the updates. Ghee and spices should be given to it so it is healthy. Give it soft green grass to eat.” The Badshah had the horse tied in his personal stables. He was happy to see the horse.
After 2 days, the horse fell sick. The people couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. It wouldn’t eat or drink anything. He would pick up his foreleg as if it was hurting. The servants ran to the Badshah and told him: “come and see the horse.” Many veterinarians, known as “Salotaris” came and tried to cure it; but failed. They examined the horse and said: “we can’t tell what’s wrong with the horse. Don’t keep it here in this stable. It may be contagious and may make the other horses sick. Give this horse to one of your Umraavs who can take care of it.” The Shah heard this and got worried. There was a Qazi named Rustom Khan (the father of Mata Kaulan ji) who was sitting close to the Badshah. Rustom Kham used to read the Quran for the Badshah. The Badshah said to him: “take this horse. Cure him. Make him well. Otherwise sell it and keep the money. This horse cannot be ridden. Someone casted an evil eye on it. The Salotaris tried to cure him, but failed. The leg is not coming down.” The Qazi was happy to hear this. He bowed 7 times to the Emperor as he knew he could get something for the horse.
The Qazi took the horse and walked home. The horse walked slowly as it was in pain. The way that the Qazi was going home, on the way, Guru ji’s Dhera was there. If anyone crossed that path, Guru ji could see who was coming or going; as Guru ji sat on a high place. He would see the Qazi go everyday. There was a Divan in progress as the Qazi walked by. The omniscient Satguru, the sustainer; master of the world, was seated on a high place. He knew what the horse was thinking. When the horse came close to the Divaan, the horse neighed out loud. He called out to Guru ji: “the Turks’ radiance is like a big lake. I am trapped in it like the elephant who was saved by you. This Qazi has a hold on me; like the alligator trapped the elephant. Please release me from the Qazi; like you saved the elephant. You are the saviour of the weak. Listen to my Ardaas, oh gracious one. I want to be with you. I took a birth to serve you.” Guru ji heard the horse’s Ardaas. Guru ji looked up at the horse. Guru ji looked at the path and said: “who is taking this horse? The horse is in pain. It was walking slowly. Looks like it’s sick.” The Sikhs ran to the horse and found out what happened. They came back and said to Guru ji: “it is the Qazi who is taking an ill horse. The horse is in pain.” The Sikh from Kabul ran outside and recognized the horse he bought from Rome. He saw the horse and came back to Guru ji. He said with great joy: “Guru ji! That is your horse! He has gone weak since he was separated from me. I couldn’t bring him to you. He has gone weak being with the sinners. Satguru ji! Take the horse!” Guru ji saw the love in the Sikh’s heart. Guru ji looked towards the Qazi and sent a Sikh to call him. The Qazi was seated in the Divaan with respect. Guru ji asked the Qazi: “where did this horse come from?” The Qazi said: “the Badshah has bought this horse from Kabul. He has paid a lot of money for it. He couldn’t mount it. For 2 days it was alright; but then it got sick. The horse is in pain. The Badshah gave me the horse since it was sick. He said: “cure it or sell it and keep the money.” I was taking the horse home and wanted to give it medicine.” Guru ji looked at the horse and said: “would you like to sell the horse? Tell me how much you want. I will cure the horse. I know what’s wrong with it.” The Qazi said: “this horse is very expensive. It’s only using 3 legs. When it used all its legs, it was 100,000 Rajitpuns. He looks like he was chiselled by an artist. He is very strong.” Guru ji said: “if you want to sell it, then tell me how much you want. What is it worth now? I want to buy it. Right now, it can’t be mounted. The Guru will cure it. It will be served for a few days. It will be strong then. Whether it is good or bad, we will take it. You should take the profit today. It is as good as dead to you. I will give you 10,000 Rajitpuns for it. Go and be happy with it. If the horse has destiny left, it will be cured and live on. If it dies, you can keep the money I give you.” The Qazi thought about it: “I am taking it home to cure it. What if it dies? I should take the 10,000. Who knows if it be cured or not. I don’t think it will survive. Guru ji probably doesn’t know how bad it’s sick. I should take the money. If it dies, I won’t get anything. The Guru has a lot of money coming. The Guru is gracious. Nobody else will pay that much. I shouldn’t lose this opportunity.” He stayed quiet and then said: “Guru ji, the horse is yours for 10,000. You are a Peer. I can’t refuse your offer. When the horse is cured, you can mount it. Give me the money so I can go home. Please be happy with me.” Sri Guru ji said: “when the money comes from the Sangat, I will first give it to you. I will do the other tasks later. Consider the money with you now. Don’t doubt this. The money will come very soon. The Sikhs will come and bring the money. We live in the same city; we meet each other everyday. I won’t take the money anywhere. You will get the money.” The Qazi said: “I won’t wait a long time. Make sure you think about the trade. The horse is ill. If we make a deal, you can’t back out of it. You will have to pay even if it dies.” Guru ji said: “don’t be unwise. This is not how wise people speak. If a person does not stay true to their word, they go to Hell.” The Qazi had a receipt written: “I am the receiver. Guru ji has to pay me 10,000.” He wrote a strict contract and had it witnessed and stamped. He left the horse with Guru ji and took the receipt contract. He went to his home.
Guru ji had the horse tied with a silk rope in his stables. Guru ji gave medicine to the horse and touched its back. The horse was cured and it put its leg on the ground again.
5-17 The Qazi Quarrels
Guru ji went to see the horse the next day in the stables. The horse started to eat well again. Guru ji appreciated the horse’s beauty and passed his hand over the horse’s back. He gave love to the horse and looked at him. The horse got very happy and blew through his nose in excitement. The horse was now able to put his leg down without pain. The horse was good as new in 3 days. It ate a lot of grass and grains. It gained weight as the days went by. It got stronger. Satguru ji had it saddled up with a golden saddle. The saddle had diamonds and goldwork on it. Guru ji dressed in expensive clothes and weapons. He mounted the horse and rode it. The horse was really happy. The horse began to jump and walked in a way that was not disturbing to Guru ji. He rode by the will of Guru ji’s wishes. The horse walked like a performer. Guru ji was happy with the trot and walk of the horse. The Sikh from Kabul came to watch. He folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji. He said: “you fulfilled my wish! I bought this horse for you and wanted to see you ride it. You fulfilled my wish by sitting on it. I saw today what I wanted to see. Please bless me and give me permission to go back home. I am now at peace by seeing you. I am in bliss.” Guru ji saw the love and devotion of the Sikh. Guru ji blessed the Sikh with Mukti. Guru ji said: “be happy. You have been freed from the cycle of birth and death.” The Sikh received Brahmgyaan as soon as Guru ji said that. He saw the light of Akaal Purakh inside of him. The self-illuminating Aatma shone through. He was above time now. He was in bliss. He grabbed Guru ji’s feet. There was a great bliss in his heart that needed no pleasure, ever. He connected to Satnam all the time. His attention did not go anywhere else. He went back to his home. When he died, he received the highest status and went to Sach Khand.
Guru ji’s horse was illuminating in the stable. The horse ate well. Guru ji would ride the horse often and hunt in the jungles. This would make Guru ji happy. Baba Bhudda ji and the other Sikhs stayed close to Guru ji all the time.
Sangat from the East would come in great numbers, bringing expensive gifts for Guru ji. Sikhs from many regions came. It was hard to name them all. Masands along with the Sikhs came from the West all the way from Iraq. Sikhs from Kashmir would come from the mountainous regions to see Guru ji.
After a few days, the Qazi wanted to be paid and came to Guru ji. He bowed to Guru ji and sat down. He said: “tell me how much the horse would be worth since it is cure? You ride it now with joy. It is right to pay for it now since the horse survived. You said you will pay it in full.” Guru ji heard this and said: “that much money has not been saved yet. Right now, there is only about 3,000 above the expense of the Langar and operations. I told you I will give it all at once, so I won’t pay you yet. Money is sent to Amritsar for the expenses. There is an army that stays with me. The Siropas need to be bought. There are a lot of expenses. After all these expenses, the money is being saved. When it reaches 10,000, I will give you.” The Qazi said: “please keep my payment as a high priority. Without paying, the debt is not paid. You will have to budget your other expenses.” The Qazi went back home.
The next week, the Qazi kept thinking about the money, day and night. One day, there was a Divaan in progress and the Qazi came to attend. He was egotistical and angry as he came. He said to Guru ji: “many days have passed. Please give me my money. The horse has been cured by Khuddah. You should pay me more. The Badshah couldn’t ride this horse. You are fortunate that you got to ride it. Look how much joy it gives you.” Guru ji said: “Khuddah brought this horse. The item to whom it belongs to, it comes to them, by itself. What can a human do in front of Parmeshwar? The human tries many efforts, but it is useless in front of Akaal Purakh. My Sikh reached Rome, trying to find this horse. He paid a Lakh Rajitpun from Rome. He bought it for me. The Badshah heard about it and had it confiscated by force. He did not do justice like an Emperor. Parmeshwar did justice. How could Khuddah tolerate this? Qazi ji, that is the truth. Khuddah did not want the Badshah to keep this horse. This horse was mine; it came back to me. Regarding your money, the Sangat will come and bring money. Be patient. I will pay you 10,000 for it. I’ll have it sent to your home.” The Qazi then spoke in anger as he did not understand Guru ji’s greatness: “listen Guru ji, this is not a good thing for you. You should do what you said. You are making excuses. How long can I remain patient? It has been a long time. Then give me the horse back. I will take it home. Otherwise pay me the money. This will become into a conflict.” Baba Bhudda ji said: “don’t be angry and say this. There is no worry in the Guru’s home. When it is your destiny, you will get your money. Wait a few more days and see what will happen. Be patient. Be wise. Don’t speak harshly.” The Qazi got up to leave and said to Baba Bhudda ji: “I am leaving now but make sure the money is ready. I won’t leave empty-handed next time.” The Qazi went back home. He started to think many things in his mind: “it is good if I get the money next time. I will complain to the Badshah and then get them to pay the money with force. I will start a conflict between them.”
A few days passed and the Qazi kept thinking about the money. He came during the afternoon. Guru ji was resting. Baba Bhudda ji was sitting outside the tent, standing guard. There was no other Sikh nearby. The Qazi said to Baba Bhudda ji: “I want to see Guru ji right now. I have come after many days and I want my money now.” Baba Bhudda ji said: “Guru ji is resting. It is not the time to meet him. Come another time and meet the gracious Guru. He is resting on his bed. Nobody has the power to disturb him. He won’t get up.” The Qazi spoke in anger: “you are the Guru’s caretaker. I have heard that you are the one that takes care of the expenses. If I can’t meet Guru ji, you should pay me. He is going to ask you anyways. Why don’t you pay me?” Baba Bhudda ji said: “I am nothing. Guru ji does everything. I don’t take care of anything. I can’t give it. When Guru ji comes out and sits in the Divaan, you can ask him them. Why are you in a hurry? Be patient. Be wise. Don’t be unwise. Why do you want to disturb Guru ji?” The foolish Qazi spoke angrily to Baba Bhudda ji: “you are sitting here making up things. Are you not afraid of Badshah Shah Jahan? I am his Qazi. I will meet the Badshah and become the Guru’s son-in-law to take the money. Who can face the Badshah? Everyone fears him. You will give me the money right away then.” Baba Bhudda ji heard this and spoke his unchangeable words: “the Guru will become your son-in-law! How can you get the money then? You will have to send your daughter. How will you ask him for money? I am understanding now why this is happening. You are not supposed to take the money. This was supposed to happen. Nobody can stop destiny.” Baba Bhudda ji went quiet after saying that. The Qazi got really angry. He got up and left. He spoke harsh words as he left: “I will meet the Guru one more time. If I don’t get the money, I will complain to the Badshah.”
5-18 The Qazi and Kaulan
The conversation between Baba Bhudda ji and the Qazi, was heard by Guru ji’s own ears. Hearing this created a deep concern for him. He remained quiet. He thought to himself: “what did Baba Bhudda ji just say? He made me the Qazi’s son-in-law in anger while quarreling with the Qazi. He cursed me for nothing. This is a big problem that I will be the Qazi’s son-in-law. The world will talk bad and say: “what did the Sikh do?” What will my mother say? She will never let this happen. What should I do now? This will create many problems.” Guru ji stared still into the distance, thinking deeply. Accepting or rejecting this fact, both had unwanted consequences. He continued thinking: “It is unorthodox to bring the daughter of a Turk, home. On the other hand, to reject the words of a Brahmgyaani Sikh is impossible. I was born by his word. His words are followed by Devatas. The still things start moving by his words. The running things can become still. Who can reverse Baba Bhudda ji’s words? He has been with 6 Gurus. He has served them. He is so great that he can stop the sun and the moon. His blessings and curses are valid in every dimension. Brahma, Shiv ji and Vishnu cannot stop his words. How can I reverse his words? The Avatars have had the tradition since the beginning. Ram Chander ji followed the curse of Naarad Muni and had to send his wife to the home of the demons. It was an unorthodox thing which was the reason of his slandering. He still followed it. Krishan ji accepted the curse of Durvasa, which finished his whole family of Yadavs. Whatever people do, they know right from wrong. The words of the Brahmgyaani cannot be reversed. The words are always true. This tradition cannot be broken. I will have to follow his words. Baba Bhudda ji’s words will be followed. Mata ji and the elders will be angry but I will have to tolerate it. My father accepted Kana Bhagat’s curse and endured great pain. He didn’t care about what people said.” In this way Guru Hargobind Sahib ji thought about the future and compared it to what had happened in the past.
Guru ji came outside and smiled and Baba Bhudda ji. He said to him: “Baba ji, what did you just say? You didn’t think about good or bad. The Qazi was fighting with you and you uttered those words. How can I become his son-in-law? He is a Qazi. How can this happen? If people like you were to say these things, what is to become of anyone else?” Baba Bhudda ji folded his hands and said: “I only said what you made me say. The Qazi’s daughter has been doing a strict Tapasya for many births. Her only wish is for you to be her husband. She has been asking this from many births. Should she not be rewarded in this birth? For some Karma she was born in this Qazi’s home as a Turk. She has done the penance, though. She has done strict fasts like the Chandrayana Vrata. She has endured great pain on her body for her Tapasya. She has asked for you to be her husband. This is the birth that she is to be rewarded in. This is her last birth. Love will arise in her heart for you as soon as she sees you.” Guru ji went quiet, just as Ram Chander ji went quiet at the words of Rishi Vashisht.
Guru ji took a bathe and tied a great Cheera Dastaar with golden thread work. There were pearls hanging from the Dastaar. The Layers of the Dastaar were accurately placed. His face was like the moon. His eyes were beautiful. There was nobody who wouldn’t be attracted to Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. He tied a Jigha with diamonds and round pearls. He wore golden hoops in his ears. He wore golden bracelets with rubies. A pearl necklace adorned his neck. He wore fine silk clothes with weapons, two swords and a shield. His radiance could not be described. There was no one else like him. His saddle had gold and precious gems in them. Guru ji was 7 feet tall and really wide. Guru ji mounted the horse from Iraq. He took only a few Sikhs and headed towards the home of the Qazi.
The home of the Qazi was beautiful. There were beautiful windows with sitting areas in the home. The Zanaan Khana (place were women stayed in the home) had beautiful curtains. The women of the home did not leave that area. They stayed in the “Purdah.” The Qazi had a beautiful daughter who was like the moon or like an apsara from heaven named Rumba. She was young and beautiful. Her name was Bibi Kaulan. She causally walked to the window and saw Guru Hargobind Sahib ji riding by as she had heard the tapping of a horse walking by. She saw Guru ji and was immediately attracted to his handsome form. Her Tapasya was about to be rewarded. She didn’t know it was Guru ji. She was happy to see Guru ji. The devotion in her heart arose. She was like a person who had been satiated after being hungry for many days; like a thirsty person receiving water; like the Chakori meeting the Chakor with the moon coming out. Bibi Kaulan ji kept looking at Guru ji. She was still. She was calm. She didn’t blink. Her eyes were blooming. She forgot who she was. She forgot that she wasn’t supposed to be looking at another man. She was standing near a window. She was in plain sight. It was like a deer listening to the deer horn. She didn’t go back. She was still like an idol. Guru ji noticed her deep love and devotion. He stopped his horse and gave her his Darshan. Her Japp and Tapp rewarded her. She was in front of Hari, whom she wanted to marry; whom she did Tapasya for. Guru ji stayed there for a little while. Bibi Kaulan kept looking at Guru ji. She didn’t blink. She was like a person walking in the dessert who got a place of shade. Her mind was still. She couldn’t let go of this feeling of shade. She thought to herself: “who is this? It is like the moon has come down to earth. He is strong and handsome. Where does he live? He looks like an Avatar. The fortunate ones may be his wives. Those women would be blessed. Whoever he smiles at must be blessed. How can I speak to him? I have never even met him before. Who can tell me about him? My mind will not be at ease unless I talk to him. I am unfortunate. What can I do? I have fallen in love with him. I lost my heart. I don’t have control over my heart. He is like the 2nd moon.” She kept looking at Guru ji and wanted to meet him.
In this time, the Qazi came and saw his daughter looking out the window. He got really angry and came inside the home. He saw his daughter looking out the window. There was a whip near where he was standing. He picked up the whip and was about to hit his daughter. He yelled: “you have ruined my honor! You are looking at the Guru of the Hindus. You are a corrupt daughter born to me.” He whipped her with the whip with all his might. The skin on her body began to tear. She was bleeding and shouting in pain. Her mother came running and yelled at her husband. She grabbed the whip and said: “why are you hitting her with such force? She was just sitting with me. What did she do that was so bad? She was just standing in the window. Did you not feel shame, hitting your grown daughter? People will hear this and have doubts. Why are you ruining yours and your daughter’s reputation? People will clap and laugh that you are hitting your daughter. They will think your daughter is bad.” The Qazi said: “the Guru of the Hindus, Guru Hargobind ji, was standing outside the house, whom she was staring at. This daughter will ruin our honor. Why couldn’t you protect her? If I see her doing this again, I will kill her.” The Qazi was upset and went outside the house. He was regretting what he had done. Guru ji came back to his Dhera. He came off his horse and sat down.
5-19 Kaulan’s Request
Kaulan’s mother picked up Kaulan from the ground. Kaulan was crying in pain. Kaulan’s mother laid Kaulan down on a bed. The mother treated her wounds and was angrily swearing at her husband for hurting the young girl. She gave her daughter hope and stayed with her. She called a maid and told her to sit with Kaulan. She had some of her household things to do. Bibi Kaulan was in pain. Her body and mind were in pain. She wanted to see Guru ji. She was crying in pain still. The maid sitting next to her understood what was happening to Kaulan. She was a good mate of hers. She said to her: “who was it that you were looking at? Didn’t you see your father coming?” Bibi Kaulan said: “I don’t know who he was. I saw him all of a sudden and my mind was lost forever. I lost my senses when I saw him. When my father was hitting me, he said his name. He is the Guru of the Hindus. He was really handsome. His name is Guru Hargobind ji. He has king-like features and characteristics. I can’t even praise him. I don’t see anyone else like him. I can’t compare him to anyone as no one comes close to him. There was one good thing that came out of my father beating me; I know what my love’s name is now. Listen, do a favour for me: find out where he lives. I will give you a lot of money and remember your favor forever. If you want to save me, this is what you need to do. I will be indebted to you for saving my life. Find out where he lives.” The maid said: “if have met him many times. His Dhera is close to our home. Thousands come to worship him. Many have faith in him. He relieves their pains and does not let them go to the Jumms. Many come to bow to his feet and place money in front of him. They wish to save their souls in the afterlife. There is always a crowd with him. People from every direction come to see him. They give him gifts and become free of sorrow.” Bibi Kaulan was happy to hear this. It was like a beggar getting the Kalapbrish. She said: “you are great. Please solve my problem. Go and tell Guru ji what state I am in. See if he has any compassion for me. I have read many books that say that saints follow love. They don’t see any difference between king and poor. They only look at love. I have become his servant from my body and mind. I want to serve him without anything in exchange.” The maid said: “how can I say this to him? I don’t know him. How can I go to him between so many men? Tell me another way. I have an idea! Write a letter for him. Tell him how you feel. Write a request to him about your love. He will know what your state is.” Hearing the maid, Bibi Kaulan was happy. She said: “good! That’s a good idea!” She forgot her pain and asked for a quill and paper.
The maid brought the quill and paper of the Qazi. Bibi Kaulan ji wrote a letter by first expressing her devotion and then her request: “I bow to you with my hands folded. Guru ji, you wash the sins of the sinners. Your praises are well-known in the world. The Jumms give pain but stop if a person meets you. Thousands come to see you because of this. In this tradition, everyone praises you; but with me, the opposite happened. I am in doubt about this. I wonder if people are lying, or is my Karma bad? I saw you for a few moments. I have given you my heart, now, in love. I was beaten up mercilessly for this. This is what happened. The ones who visit you everyday and listen to you with bliss, they must be suffering everyday then. They are thieves who take the Amrit of your form. You are the saviour of the poor and weak but it seems like this is not correct. I have heard that you are the Peer of the Peers but I am wondering why I was beaten for seeing you for a few moments.” Bibi Kaulan wrote the letter and gave it to the maid. She said: “if you want me to live, give this letter to the Guru. This is my request. Tell me what he says. Come back quick. I will give you money and all my jewellery. I will give you all my beautiful clothes. I won’t forget your favor. You will be giving me the gift of life.” It was evening then. The maid saw a good time to go to Guru ji.
The maid took a white sheet and covered herself. She took the letter and went to the Dhera. She met a Sikh at the Dhera and said: “give this letter to Guru ji.” The Sikh took the letter and gave it to Guru ji. Guru ji opened the letter and read it. He read that Bibi Kaulan was in deep love and impatient. Guru ji wrote a response on the back of the letter: “the ones who get on top of my ship, I protect them in every world. Without getting on to my ship, I do not protect them. This is the way of great beings.” Guru ji gave the letter back to the Sikh who gave it to the maid. The maid was told that Guru ji wrote a response. The maid was happy. She went back home and gave the letter to Bibi Kaulan. She told her what happened.
Bibi Kaulan ji read the letter near a lamp, as it was night now. She read the response and her heart burst with joy. She took a quill and wrote another letter of request to Guru ji: “listen Guru ji, the savior of the poor, I have boarded your ship with my mind and body! You need to grab my arm now. I wish to serve your feet by being your servant. Otherwise, push me with your own hands and I will kill myself. I can’t stay alive in my father’s home now. I am suffering like an ill person. I either want to see you or I want to die. There are only two options for me. I will drink a strong poison if you do not accept me.” She called the maid and had the letter sent to Guru ji.
Guru ji received the letter and read it. He understood that Bibi Kaulan had given herself to the feet of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He said to the maid: “tell her to be patient. I will complete her wish. When I go to Amritsar, I will take her with me. I won’t stay in Lahore long. I am preparing to leave in a few days. We are ready to leave.” The maid was happy and came back home.
The maid saw Bibi Kaulan sitting alone and went to her. She said: “the gracious one has accepted you in his sanctuary. He ensured me in every way that he knows your state. He will take you with him when he goes to Amritsar. He won’t stay here long.” Bibi Kaulan’s lotus eyes bloomed. Her worries and pains were gone. She asked her over and over again: “tell me what he said. Did he bless me or not? Did you notice his feelings or not? Will he come to me? Did he care for me or not?” The maid said: “you are worrying like a hungry person. He will take you in a few days. You are fortunate to love such a great and powerful Peer.” Hearing this, Bibi Kaulan was filled with bliss. She hid her love though. She was laying down on her bed. She didn’t expose the love in her heart, just as a snake does not expose its Mani; just as a person hides their treasure. She just kept showing the pain of her body. She kept talking to her maid and trying to remember her love. She didn’t care that her face was showing the love for Guru ji. She laid on her bed in pain all night long. She didn’t talk about the pain of her heart and only mentioned her physical pain. She covered her body with many sheets and didn’t want anyone to see her state.
The next day, Bibi Kaulan’s mother fought with the Qazi in great anger. She said to him: “our daughter is about to die! Rest easily now! Our extended family will see this and laugh at our state. They will all say: “what did she do that was so bad that you had to beat her so mercilessly?” The Qazi remained quiet. He couldn’t argue back to his wife.
5-20 Meeting Mian Mir
Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji bathed in the morning. He ate and then sat on a beautiful seat. By late afternoon, Guru ji got ready and wore his beautiful clothes and weapons. Guru ji said to Baba Bhudda ji: “Mian Mir ji is a great Peer. I have not met him before. He is undoubtedly a Brahmgyaani. He is powerful and can do what he wishes to. He doesn’t show his power though. He is forgiving and patient.” Baba Bhudda ji said: “if you have thought of him, he will surely meet you.” A few hours passed and Sai Mian Mir ji sensed that Guru ji wanted to see him. Sai Mian Mir ji got up and came out of his place. Guru ji sensed that Mia Mir ji was coming and so he wanted to go and meet him instead, out of respect. Guru ji quickly called for his horse and headed towards Sai Mian Mir ji’s place. Mian Mir ji had just travelled a small distance from his home when Guru ji had arrived and met him. The people saw this and figured that Mian Mir ji had come out to receive Guru ji. They did not know what had happened.
Sai Mian Mir ji and Guru ji looked at each other. They were both filled with Bliss. Sai Mian Mir ji folded his hands and bowed. Guru ji was about to dismount his horse when Sai ji held the horse’s rein all of a sudden. He said: “please remain seated. I will take you to my home.” Sai ji led the horse to his Dhera. As the door of the Dhera came, Guru ji was going to dismount his horse. Sai Mian Mir ji grabbed the leader of the Sodhi’s hand to help him down. They both walked towards the Dhera, hand-in-hand. Guru ji and Sai Mian Mir ji walked into the home. They were both very happy to see each other. Guru ji sat down. Both of them kept looking at each other without blinking. Sai ji looked at Guru ji like a Chakor looking at the moon. Guru ji said: “tell me Peer ji, where is the level of your consciousness? Did you decide on Akaal Purakh? What is your status? What are you experiencing? How do you control your mind? Did you destroy you desires and experience the bliss of the Aatma? How is it like?” Sai Mian Mir ji was patient and calm. He responded: “whoever you bless, they are determined and have faith on Khuddah. Whatever I see, I see it as a myth. I have let everything go. I only focus on the Parmatma. I only see the One. It is not an issue of mind or words. It can’t be heard or seen. I saw that form of Parmatma and let go of my ego. I am focussed on the One now. I know that my body is not mine. It is living on because of its destiny. It will remain till its Karma runs out. Whatever my body needs, it automatically comes to me. If I receive something, I am not happy. If I lose something, I am not sad. I have no desire anymore. Whatever happens, I am accepting of it. The whole world and creation are a myth and so the root of my desires is gone. I can’t describe the bliss. It’s like a dumb person trying to describe what sweet is. Whoever you bless, the filth of their mind, ego and sins, are washed away by the water of Gurmat.” Guru ji heard this and said: “you are Dhan! You are saved and now you are saving others.” They both had other deep conversations for 2 hours.
Guru ji then got up and came outside. Sai ji came to see him off with respect. Guru ji was about to mount his horse. Sai ji stopped Guru ji’s servant and held the reins himself to support him up. Guru ji said: “Sai ji, please stay here and don’t walk on ahead. I disturbed and obliged you as I came. It must have been hard for you to walk outside. You have a lot of patience and grace in your heart. Please go inside your home and give me leave.” Sai ji stood there and looked at Guru ji. He was filled with love. He humbly bowed and went inside his home as Guru ji rode off.
Satguru ji came to his Dhera and attended the So Dar Chownki with Keertan. He ate and then rested on his bed. When Guru ji went to see the Sai, there was a great crowd of people there. They were all amazed and said: “what did Peer ji do? He spoke to the Guru with great love. He touched his feet with humility. He got up himself and went to greet the Hindu Peer. He bowed to him, grabbed the reins and helped him off the horse with respect. He made him sit on his own seat. We thought he was the Peer of Peers. All of the Umraavs and Khans bow to Sai Mian Mir ji. The Badshah comes here to bow every week. Many other Peers come to bow to Sai ji, seeing him as the greatest; but he bowed to a Hindu today. He bowed to him seeing him as the higher one.” In this way the Turks spoke to each other. This was told to the Badshah as well.
The royal court heard about Sai Mian Mir ji bowing to Guru ji. They didn’t take the news positively. When Shah Jahan heard of this, he said: “I will go to the Peer and ask him about this. I want to know why he did this. The one who stays with me, why did he respect him so much? Guru Hargobind Sahib ji lives by my rules. I see Sai ji as the greatest Peer. Many other Peers bow to him. Thousands of Turks follow him. He bowed to Guru ji and has disturbed the other Turks.”
After so much doubt, the Emperor went to see Sai Mian Mir ji. The Umraavs and others reminded the Emperor of the incident with Guru ji. They all came to see Sai Mian Mir ji. Shah Jahan folded his hands and bowed to the great Peer. He sat down near him with joy. He asked Peer ji: “the Peer of the Hindus named Guru Hargobind ji, I have heard he came to see you and you respected him a lot. We are all in doubt of why you did this. He is under my command and you welcomed him with great respect. All the Turks are complaining about this.” Sai Mian Mir ji heard the Emperor and gave a responses: “All of us Peers, big or small, when we are in Samadhi and reach Khuddah’s court, we have to stand at the door. We are not allowed to go inside. After a while, the door opens and Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji comes out to receive us. At top of the doorway there is a beautiful window were Guru ji sits. He listens to our requests and fulfills them. We all fold our hands and bow to his feet with love. We are all confused at that time if this is Khuddah or if there is someone else inside? We only see his form. We don’t see anyone else. For this reason, the people who go there, they know who he is and respect him. He is the one that listens to our requests. He is indeed Khuddah. There is no other. Whoever he blesses, they are in instant joy. They receive what they ask for. Just like when you listen to the poor and ask for money, that is how we go to Guru ji for blessings. There is no Peer or Prophet who does not bow to Guru Nanak Dev ji’s throne. The ones of love Khuddah bow to Guru ji’s feet. They take the dirt from his feet and put it to their foreheads. You are a worldly person. You should worry about the world. Nobody will interfere in your work. You don’t know about Khuddah or what will happen in the future. Hindus and Turks fight each other for pleasure. They will die without knowing or thinking of Khuddah. Your reign is only 4 days long and you still only worry about your pleasures. You don’t think of Khuddah for a second and you come to me with your allegations. The wise people don’t think this is good. This is what fools do. They do not get support in the court of Khuddah. They have to suffer the punishment of Hell.” Hearing the radiant Peer’s words, everyone lowered their eyes including Shah Jahan. They couldn’t look at the Peer in his eyes. They couldn’t say a word, knowing that Sai ji was angry. Sai Mian Mir ji then spoke calmly: “you did not understand the greatness of the Guru. He is omnipotent, omniscient, the creator and the destroyer. He is acting like a human and not showing his powers. He can tolerate the intolerable. Nobody can compare to him.” Shah Jahan lowered his head and remained quiet. He got up and came outside. His people said to him: “we can’t believe what the Peer said. How can the Peer of the Hindus live with Khuddah? What can we say to the Peer?” The Badshah agreed and said: “I don’t believe it either.” Their minds were not pure and that’s why they didn’t see the greatness of the Guru. Only the pure minds could see Guru ji’s glory. These were just fools who debated ideologies. The greatness of the Guru did not reside in their minds. With doubts in their hearts, they went back. They went home and rested.
