5-1 Manglacharan
The ones who are engrossed in the Simran of Kartar; are able to bless others; I bow to those Saints. I request Sarasvati, the Power of Akaal Purakh that gives knowledge and speech, to give me the wisdom to distinguish the truth from the false. Protect and sustain me. You are benevolent and the provider of joy to your servants. Amrit comes from your mouth. When you cast your divine vision, you save the whole world. The stars may be counted but the ones saved by you cannot be counted. Akaal Purakh cares for all life. The Vedas and Bhatts sing your praises. The Vedas cannot fully quantify your praises. Akaal Purakh cannot be fully understood by any wisdom. Akaal Purakh is without beginning and end. Akaal Purakh is the creator; in one state and resides in all life.
The Gyaan of Guru Nanak Dev ji has blessed countless servants. Their locks of attachments were opened in their minds. The frauds were punished. The ones who opposed you, their egos were destroyed. Whoever you looked at, you saved. Whoever you made great, became great. Whoever you punished; they were destroyed.
The ones who were protected by Guru Angad Dev ji, received Mukti. Their obstacles were removed. He was the cloud of bliss and the moon of the Trehan clan. His praises were more fragrant than sandalwood. He was the home of virtues. I bow to such a Guru.
The one who took care of Sikhi and made it spread; calmed the mercury-like wandering minds; destroyed the darkness of ignorance; that great sun was Guru Amardas ji.
Just as Ram Chander ji killed Raavan; like a lion kills an elephant; just as Parshuram ji killed many Kshatriya Kings; just as Balram destroyed Jarasandh’s armies; that is how Guru Ramdas ji destroyed the Attachment (king).
Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji is the Light of Bharat who lit a light in darkness. He took the Gyaan from Ishwar and wrote the Gurbani to teach the world truth from false.
The lotus-eyed, powerful, Satguru Hargobind Sahib ji, whose form is meditated upon by Gyanis and Dhyanis; I bow to him.
Guru Har Rai ji is the one who did selfless Seva for the Satsangat. He destroyed the 5 vices. He fulfilled the wishes of all who served. I bow to the desireless one.
The one who was young but omnipotent, I bow to the Child-Guru, Guru Har Krishan Sahib ji. Everyone saw him as small but he was a great sun who destroyed the darkness of attachment.
The protector of the Hind; he became its blanket. The Turks were the Juvasa. He came to the Sikhs who remembered him. I bow to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji.
Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji came as a big sun. He was a warrior whose radiance struck fear into the hearts of the sinners. He killed the sinners with weapons.
I bow to the Ten forms of the Guru, who destroyed the doubts of the servants. I begin the Fifth Raas. Listen oh listeners, this Katha can destroy all of the sins.
The millions of Sikhs of the Guru who were complete; the ones who saw the truth about their Aatma; the ones who obtained powers from Baba Bhudda ji, I bow to their feet with joy.
I request all of you to help me in completing this Granth. Destroy the obstacles in my way and give me great wisdom so I may state the glories of the Satguru, continuously.
The Katha of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji continues.
Sri Satguru Hargobind Sahib ji left the Gwalior Fort and went to Delhi with Bhai Vizier Khan ji. The Rajas came out of the Fort of Gwalior. Bhai Haridas ji took them and headed to Delhi as well. They were extremely happy and said: “the Guru is Dhan! He is benevolent.” They sang his praises and shouted Jaikaras of Guru ji. They all travelled slowly to Delhi.
Sri Satguru Hargobind Sahib ji travelled over 300 km to get to Delhi. Guru ji arrived in Delhi and came to Majnu Ka Tilla. Bhai Vizier Khan ji went to meet the Badshah to announce Guru ji’s arrival. He came to Jahangir and did his Salaam. Jahangir said: “Vizier Khan, I’ve been waiting for you. You look really happy. Looks like you brought Guru ji. Is this true? I am eager to meet him.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji said: “Khuddah has helped you. Guru ji accepted your request and came to Delhi. Your wish will be fulfilled. Guru ji is in Delhi at Majnu’s place. I have come to let you know that he is here. When it is your wish, I will bring Guru ji here, so you can meet him with devotion. He has come to meet you.” Jahangir was happy to hear this. It was like a wilting plant receiving water. He had been afraid of the nights. He was no longer scared. He thought to himself: “I will ask for forgiveness for all my mistakes. I will make him happy now so I won’t be scared anymore.” He said to Bhai Vizier Khan ji: “this is a good time. Ask Guru ji to come today. I am eagerly waiting to meet him. Go and bow to him for me and ask him to come. Speak with respect to him.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji went back to Guru ji. He left with speed like an arrow released from a bow.
Guru ji was ready on his end as well. He was ready to punish the sinners. Bhai Vizier Khan ji came and bowed to Guru ji. He said: “Guru ji, the Emperor bows to you. He has heard of your arrival and is really happy. He wishes to see you with love. This is the best thing for him. He wants to make you happy. He has requested for you to come and see him. He wants you to forgive him.” Sri Guru ji heard this and got dressed. He wore a beautiful Chola and tied a beautiful Cheera Dastaar with an expensive Jigha and Kalgi. He wore his jewellery. Guru ji’s body was built and impressive. He tied his Kumerkassa, fastened his weapons and mounted his horse. Guru ji left with Bhai Vizier Khan ji and the other Sikhs. They all entered the city. Guru ji’s horse would dance as it rode. Guru ji had to keep his horse slow as it was too eager to run. Thousands of people watched the royal radiance of Guru ji as Guru ji rode through streets of Delhi. Whoever saw Guru ji had their worries washed away. They all bowed as he rode by. Everyone’s pain was gone. The Sikhs celebrated the arrival of Guru ji. They said: “Gwalior is a very painful place. The prisoner can never come out. Guru ji had the 52 prisoners released from the jail. Who else could have done this? He is truly the “Gareeb Nivaaj.” He kept his promise of protecting his servants. The prisoners were to be cremated inside the Qila. There was no way for them to come out. They couldn’t even bribe anyone. Guru ji blessed them and had them released. Guru ji had their chains broken. The world is praising Guru ji. He is benevolent. He blessed the Rajas.” The roads of Delhi were filled with people, singing Guru ji’s praises. Some praised Guru ji in front of him. Guru ji kept riding his horse forward. Guru ji came into the boundary of the palace, still mounted on his horse. The officers of the court all got up when they saw Guru ji. Bhai Vizier Khan ji announced: “Guru ji is arriving! Stand up in his respect. He is the one who saved the Badshah’s life. There is no one greater than him.” Everyone got up and bowed to Guru ji. The officers had their weapons on them. As Guru ji rode by, everyone bowed. Guru ji went right up to the door of the main court and then got off his horse. He went to the court of the Badshah, that was crafted with gold. There were paintings of plants and animals on the walls. Rugs and expensive tarps were laid out. The court had many doors. Bhai Vizier Khan informed the Badshah of Guru ji’s arrival. The sandalwood stool was laid out for Guru ji with a white cloth. The senior Umraavs were sent to receive Guru ji. They bowed to Guru ji and brought him into the court. Guru ji sat on his seat. The Badshah got up from his throne and bowed to Guru ji along with the officers of the court. Everyone got up and came to bow to Guru ji.
5-2 The Shah asks Chandoo for the Mala
The Meers and Viziers all came to bow to Guru ji. They gave respect to Guru ji. The Badshah folded his hands and said: “you have been compassionate and given me life. You first went to Gwalior for me and did Simran with love. I made many mistakes towards you but you only showed compassion. When I was afraid at night, seeing the lions come towards me from both sides, I did your Simran and saw you come to my aide. I know that I was saved because you were doing the Simran in Gwalior. I was patient because I knew you were protecting me.” Sri Guru Hargobind ji said: “whoever has faith in the Guru’s home and comes to the sanctuary of the Guru with devotion, why wouldn’t Guru Nanak Dev ji protect them? Your elders kept relations with the Guru’s home. They made the Gurus happy and received many blessings. You were happy because of that. Just as a mirror does not lie, the ones who have saffron and sandalwood paste on their faces, that is what they see in the mirror. If one rubs black soot on their face, they will see black soot in the mirror. The Guru is a mirror that shows one their devotion. The ones that come with corruption, they will receive the appropriate punishment. The corrupt person sees the punishment. The punishment from the Guru’s home has to be served in both worlds. Bad intentions give bad results and good intentions give good results. You had faith in the Guru, so you received the appropriate fruit.” Guru ji would raise and lower his right hand as he spoke. Sometimes he would place it on his knee and sometimes he would raise it. There was a Mala made of Kapoor/Kehruba in his right hand. It was a beautiful Mala with great workmanship on it. Guru ji was doing Simran with it. It was so beautiful that it would catch anyone’s eye. It caught the attention of the Emperor. Guru ji was purposely showing it to the Emperor to capture his mind. The Emperor saw it and said: “that is an amazing Mala in your hand. I have never seen one like it. It looks very expensive and from a foreign land.” Guru ji heard this and said: “you have a keen eye. Yes! This was given to me by a Sikh from a foreign land. He gave it to me and told me to keep it in my hand.” The Emperor said: “oh wise Guru, please give me one of the beads. I will take that bead and make it the Meru bead of my Tasbih (Mala). My Tasbih is very expensive. I have taken the rarest pearls and gems from foreign lands to make my Tasbih. If I add the bead of your Mala, it will be 2 favors for me: I will remember you when I use it; secondly, I will not be afraid of anything. Please protect me in the future as you did up till now.” Guru ji said: “take the whole Mala. Put it in your hand now. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is always with you. Saying his name will make all the troubles go away. If you have faith in the Satguru, your fears will be all gone.” The Emperor folding his hands and said: “this is yours Guru ji. If there are other such beads, I will take that. Please look in your treasury if there is another one like this. It will be a favour to me if I get a bead from you.” Satguru ji heard this and said: “the person who you have made your Divaan, Chandoo, you sent the elder Guru to his home; where the elder Guru ji left his body, the elder Guru ji had an even more expensive Mala around his neck, than this one. That Mala was left at Chandoo’s home. We didn’t find that Mala again. He lied and took your permission to take Guru ji to his home. He committed a very bad sin. Get that Mala from his home. See if you can find a bead from that Mala. Chandoo did not tell you the details. He lied and did very bad things.” The Emperor figured out that Guru ji knew everything, that’s why he was talking about Chandoo’s frauds. The Emperor said: “he lied to me about the elder Guru. He told me that Guru ji kept thieves with him. I heard this and called him to me. Guru ji came to Lahore and gave me his Darshan. In the evening, he went to his camp and I had no idea what had happened. Chandoo slandered him and then started to slander you. He told me that you have raised an army and made a Takhat; from which you said you were going to avenge your father’s death. Hearing this, I got confused again. I sent Vizier Khan to you to call you. You were gracious and came to give me your Darshan. When I saw you, I didn’t see any faults in you. I noticed that you didn’t want to take any revenge on me. You were full of love and compassion. I didn’t do anything wrong so why would you have killed me? I noticed that. You can take your revenge on the one that has sinned. I only met Guru Arjan Dev ji for 2 hours. I didn’t say anything or meet him again. I didn’t care to take any action on the charges then.” Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “it is better that you don’t speak about this. This has been written by Khuddah. When the judgement comes, I will take the revenge. It won’t be over in this world. The punishment will extend into the Hells. The punishments of Hell will cause great grief. Nobody will be able to assist in that world. The omniscient one knows everything. Nothing could be hidden. Only Parmeshwar knows who is guilty and how much guilty they are. Right now, get the Mala here from Chandoo’s home that belonged to the elder Guru ji.” The Badshah got really scared and called for Chandoo by sending a messenger.
When Chandoo came to the court, the Emperor pointed to the Mala in Guru ji’s hand and said: “if there is a Mala like this, bring it to me.” Chandoo folded his hands and said: “there is a more expensive Mala than this one in my home. I will go home and find it. It is very radiant.” Chandoo took the Emperor’s permission and went to his home. Chandoo thought to himself: “I will give the Badshah the Mala of Guru Arjan Dev ji that I kept.” He said to his servant: “go to my treasury and find the Mala of Guru Arjan Dev ji.” The servant looked through the treasury but couldn’t find it. Where the Mala was, mice had taken the Mala and chewed the beads. There were only remnants of the Mala. The servant came and told Chandoo: “the Mala has been chewed up by mice. There isn’t even one bead that survived. I looked into the burrow of the mice and couldn’t find any beads.” Chandoo heard this and got worried. He thought to himself: “I just needed one bead. If he (Jahangir) doesn’t get it, he’s going to think I was lying. Where can I get such a Mala at this time?” Chandoo sent a servant to the market to find a merchant who would have an expensive bead. He told them: “pay them what they ask for.” Many people were sent to the markets of Delhi. They brought back some beads but they were no where near the beauty and radiance of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s mala. He sent more people to rich jewellers but they failed. Tired, the servants came home. Chandoo was worried that the Badshah may be waiting.
When Chandoo did not return, the Badshah sent a messenger with a message: “why haven’t you returned yet? Bring the Mala and come quickly.” The messenger ran to Chandoo’s house and gave him the message: “the Badshah is calling for you to come quickly. How are you sitting and not afraid?”
5-3 The Sinner Chandoo is surrendered to Guru ji
When Chandoo left, Guru ji said: “he had the Mala of Guru ji. It has been a few years now. I don’t know if he still has it or not. If the Mala comes, I will be able to recognize it. Even if he brings one bead, ask him for the whole Mala. That Mala is priceless in this country. This sinner didn’t let anyone find out what he did. He should be punished severely.” The Emperor heard this and said: “let’s see what Chandoo brings. You can recognize it. Sai Mian Mir ji told me everything that Chandoo had done. If he has done you wrong, he will be your prisoner. You can do whatever you want with him. I don’t want any responsibility for his wrongdoings. He should be punished for his sins.” The Emperor had noticed that Chandoo had not returned yet. He sent another messenger to his home and said: “go and see why Chandoo has not returned yet. Tell him to come quickly.”
The Messenger came to Chandoo’s home and said to Chandoo: “get up Divaan! Why are you sitting? The Emperor keeps asking about you. Do you have the Mala or not? Go and tell him.” When Chandoo saw the second messenger, he got really worried. Chandoo quickly got up in fear and left his home. He crossed a clothes line as he came out and his Pugri got caught and fell to the ground. He quickly picked the Pugri up and put it on his head. As he walked ahead, someone sneezed. His own left eye twitched and his heart palpitated. He saw all the bad omens. He began to run and went to the Emperor.
Chandoo entered the court and saw Guru ji sitting there. Seeing Guru ji made Chandoo upset. He folded his hands and said: “the beads of the Mala were very expensive. I looked hard but I couldn’t find them. I sent some men to the market to find another Mala like it. I sent them to the jewelers and other merchants. They looked hard but returned empty-handed. They couldn’t even find one bead like it. If you wait a few days, I will send men to other cities to find an expensive bead.” Chandoo then went quiet and stood there. The Emperor looked towards Guru Hargobind Sahib ji and wondered if he was going to say anything. Guru ji came into Bir Ras and said: “Badshah, what are you looking at me for? Emperors like you stand in Akaal Purakh’s court like beggars with their hands folded. Everyone is the same in that court. I will take the revenge of my father in Akaal Purakh’s court then. You will be there standing next to Chandoo. The punishment will be given in Hell.” The Badshah got really scared hearing this. He heard Sai Mian Mir say this as well. Sai Mian Mir told him that Chandoo had influenced him the wrong way. After listening to Guru ji’s word, Jahangir decided that he was going to declare Chandoo guilty. He said: “Chandoo is guilty of Guru Arjan Dev ji’s murder. Please don’t put any guilt on my head and punish me in Akaal Purakh’s court. Please take your revenge here. Please bless me. If you find me guilty, please punish me here. In my defence, I want to say that it was Chandoo that led me the wrong way. It is good to punish the guilty right now. Please take this debt off my head. I don’t want my afterlife to be bad.” Guru ji said: “these people used your power to do the sins. You are definitely partially guilty. You will have to suffer the consequences in Akaal Purakh’s court. Your debt will be cleared there. Everyone’s debt is cleared there: both weak and strong, king and pauper. There is no discrimination there.” The Emperor replied: “Chandoo cheated and lied to me. I didn’t know the truth. Vizier Khan, Sai Mian Mir and you told me the truth. I heard that and separated myself from Chandoo. Chandoo is your prisoner. I don’t want any part in Chandoo’s doings. If I help him now, then I am guilty. I won’t help him in any way. I want my afterlife to be good. I don’t want any debts. I give you Chandoo. He is yours. I won’t meet him again. His sin was the worst of millions of sins. Sai Mian Mir ji told me this. These kinds of people burn in their graves. Smoke comes from their graves. My heart trembles hearing about what this foolish Chandoo did to your father.” Chandoo spoke after hearing this: “who was the one that told you all this? Somebody is slandering me. I took Guru Arjan Dev ji after taking your permission. He stayed at my home but got sick. He left his body but I didn’t take any money or fine from him as we discussed.” The Badshah said: “Chandoo, it was you who slandered the Guru. You told me that he had thieves in his home. He was a great Satguru. You told me bad things about him and made me his enemy. He was all-powerful. He couldn’t have done what you said. You have to suffer for your sins. Don’t blame me for anything. Don’t include me.” The liar Chandoo spoke: “everyone was saying what I said. I didn’t make anything up. People told me that Guru Arjan Dev ji had thieves. I didn’t make anything up. You gave me permission to take him.” The Badshah got angry and said: “you fool! You couldn’t know his greatness. The whole world praised him and bowed to him. Who was it that said bad things about him? You said all the bad things. You placed false allegations on him. You still continue to lie. You will be punished in both worlds. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji is my savior. Look how many times he saved me. You were Guru Arjan Dev ji’s enemy. You took his life.” Jahangir looked to Guru ji and said: “he is now your prisoner. You can take him and have your revenge. Please protect me in the afterlife.” Sri Satguru ji heard this and called Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and Bhai Jetha ji. He said to them: “grab this enemy of the Guru’s home! Take your revenge!” Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and Bhai Jetha ji were already watching the whole conversation and were red with anger. They didn’t wait for Guru ji to finish his sentence and quickly ran towards Chandoo like a lion pouncing on its prey. They took Chandoo’s Pugri off and tied his arms with it. They took him out of the court and beat his head with their own shoes. They yelled at him: “you liar, cheater, son of a dog!” They kept slapping his head with their shoes as they swore at him. Chandoo’s allies had to stand there and watch as there was nothing they could do. The Umraavs and officers that were on his side were surprised and backed off. They didn’t come to his aide. They said: “look how this great Divaan is being beaten by a bunch of Jatts. We wonder why the Emperor is mad at him.” The ones that hated Chandoo said: “he deserved this!” Guru ji said to Jahangir: “I will go to my camp now. You have given me my prisoner. You have repaid your debt.” Jahangir said: “if you do as you please, I would be happy.” Guru ji blessed the Emperor and came outside. He mounted his horse and came outside of the palace.
Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji were standing outside with Chandoo. Guru ji rode up to the Sikhs and looked at Chandoo with anger. Guru ji said to them: “take him to the market, just like this, and tell all the Sikhs to slap his head with their shoes, five times each. This is my command to all the Sikhs. The Guru will be happy with the Sikhs who hit his head. The rain of shoes should hit his head. Bring him back to our camp slowly.” Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji came behind Guru ji slowly. Chandoo was tied and bare-headed. They put sand and dirt in his head. They slapped his head and swore at him. Wherever there were people gathered, the Sikhs yelled out: “this is the enemy of the Guru. Slap his head with your shoes. Whoever is a Sikh, slap his head 5 times with your shoes.” When the Sangat heard that Chandoo was captured, they were surprised to see this. The Sikhs were really happy. They came to loot the happiness of the Guru. They slapped Chandoo’s head with their shoes. Some were scared, knowing that Chandoo was the Divaan of the Emperor. They would quickly slap his head and hide their shoes. They didn’t want Chandoo to see them. Some were really happy to slap and beat him. Bhai Jetha ji yelled out loud: “don’t be afraid of him. He is as good as dead. It is Satguru ji’s command to beat him.” Slowly the Sikhs all began to came. The elders gave their shoes to others to beat Chandoo. Thousands of people stood and watched this event.
The Sikhs along with the tied-up Chandoo walked through the market. Chandoo’s hair was white and his body became weak. He couldn’t take the pain of the slaps. Many people climbed their rooftops to watch this. Some threw their shoes towards him and some swore at him. Some people put dirt on his face and slapped him. Bhai Jetha ji held Chandoo and made him walk ahead. He became so dirty that no one could recognize him. He was once known as a noble and people bowed to him as he walked through the streets of Delhi. Kids came and slapped him today. They said: “he is a sinner. He is guilty.” Others slapped him and said: “slapping him will make your hands pure!” Chandoo was beaten through the streets and reached Majnu ka Tilla.
5-4 Sending an Update to Sri Amritsar
The people of Delhi praised Guru Hargobind Sahib ji: “Guru ji took revenge for his father. Chandoo has been captured. He is being punished, deserving of his sin. If this didn’t happen and Chandoo died without being tortured, Guru ji’s glory would have been stained. People would have said: “Guru ji couldn’t take revenge for his father. What use is a son who can’t avenge his father’s murder?” If this sinner would have not been punished, others would have tortured saints and holy people. Satguru ji’s son and his Sangat would have been insulted by fools. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji protected everyone and the glory of the Guru’s home by capturing Chandoo. He is a blessing in this world who has followed his Kshatriya Dharam. He is a confident warrior who lives up to his word and oath. His birth has glorified the weapons he wears. The Gurus before him were peaceful and forgiving. This Guru is a warrior full of Bir Ras along with being a saint. He has trunk-like arms. He is the Avatar of the warrior spirit. He is the Avatar of warriorism. Seeing him, one is motivated to fight. Cowards turn into brave warriors. Satguru’s father’s enemy was Chandoo. Chandoo couldn’t be forgiven. He is being dragged through the streets of Delhi. Guru ji has done a great thing.” The people talked about all this in Delhi. They said: “it was impossible to catch Chandoo who was close to the Emperor and who commanded many Navaabs. Umraavs were his friends. He was extremely rich and commanded the whole country. He could kill anyone he wanted to and forgive anyone he wanted to. He bribed many to do what he wanted to. Nobody complained about him. There was no other, greater than Guru ji, who could have even looked towards Chandoo. We wonder why the Emperor gave Chandoo to Guru ji. He was a senior Divaan whom the Emperor listened to.” People in their homes were saying these things. Guru ji was being praised. Guru ji arrived at Majnu ka Tilla with great glory. Everyone came to bow to his feet. Guru ji came inside his place and sat on his seat. Guru ji was the form of Sri Bhagavan Parmeshwar.
The very next day, Guru ji sent a messenger towards Baba Bhudda ji: “I have reached the city. You should come here with the whole army.” Baba Bhudda ji and the Sikhs with him heard the message and got happy. They wanted to see Guru ji. They saddled their horses and pulled the reins. They played the Nagara to notify their departure. The army headed towards Guru ji. They reached Guru ji and bowed to his feet. They were very happy to see Guru ji. Guru ji had Baba Bhudda ji and the other Sikhs seated with great respect. Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji brought Chandoo into the court. Guru ji was seated on a bed and looked towards Chandoo. The Sikhs kept beating Chandoo’s head with shoes continuously. There was dirt on his face and head. His face and head were swollen from the slaps. His Pugri was used to tie his arms. Bhai Jetha ji held Chandoo so he couldn’t run away. Everyone shouted out Jaikaras: “Guru ji has caught the big sinner!” Guru ji shouted out: “this is the barking dog that attacked the elder Guru ji. Take him and tie him to a stake, planted behind the horses. Tie him with the hunting dogs. Keep him like a dog. Tie him up there. Feed him like dogs. Tie him tight to the stake with a leash to his neck. Everyone is commanded to slap his head with their shoes with 5 strikes. He is a big sinner and murderer.” The army all got up and slapped Chandoo’s head with their shoes. Chandoo eventually fainted from the pain. He couldn’t say anything. The soldiers then kicked him and said: “kill him!” When he fainted, Guru ji was informed. Guru ji said: “don’t kill him yet. We need to keep him alive still. We need to drag him through other villages. He will be killed were Pithaji left his body. Keep him with the dogs and feed him dog food. He needs to be alive till Lahore.” Bhai Jetha ji heard this and opened Chandoo’s arms. A few soldiers stood guard with weapons. They were told: “don’t let him go. When he opens his eyes, tie him up again.”
It was night time and so everyone ate with Guru ji. Some went to their homes and some stayed with Guru ji. Guru ji went to sleep with great peace. He then woke up at 2:30 am and took a bath with joy. He then sat in Samadhi, connecting to his real form, the Aatma. The Rababis sang Asa Vaar in various Raags. Bhai Babak ji and other Rababis showered Amrit onto the Sangat with their Keertan. The Saloks, Chants and Pauris were sung. Raag Bhairon, Asa and others were sung. Many Sikhs gathered to attend the Asa Vaar Divaan. The soldiers and other Sikhs were all present. When the sun came up, Guru ji opened his eyes and let go of his Samadhi. Guru ji called for his clothes and wore them. He fastened his weapons and came to the Divaan court. Baba Bhudda ji and other Sikhs came to bow to Guru ji. Soldiers with swords and shields came to see Guru ji. Everyone was happy. Bhai Haridas ji from Gwalior had arrived at this time with the 52 Rajas. They all came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They all sat down near Guru ji. They were in bliss. At a distance, Chandoo was tied up near the dogs. He was in pain. He was in Hell. Baba Bhudda ji said to Guru ji: “Mata Ganga ji is anxious. She is thinking about you. She has only one son whom she loves a lot. You have been separated from her for the first time. Think about your mother’s state now. Write a message for her and tell her how you are. She should be happy after reading it.” Guru ji heard this and said: “this is a good thing Baba ji. Write a letter to Mata ji and tell her that the sinner has been caught. Take Karah Prashaad to Harmandhir Sahib. My oath has been fulfilled. The foolish enemy has been caught.” Baba Bhudda ji wrote a letter to Mata ji and had it sent right away.
When the messenger reached Amritsar, Mata ji read the letter. She was really happy. She kept on thinking of Guru Nanak Dev ji and would fold her hands. She bowed to all the Gurus: “you are the protector of my son. Please protect him in the future. You took him out of the Qila and you helped him catch the sinner. You did all this. My son’s oath was very difficult. Guru Nanak Dev ji, you have fulfilled his oath.” Mata ji celebrated and took Karah Prashaad to Harmandhir Sahib. Her mind was very calm now. She had money and Prashaad offered at Harmandhir Sahib. She bowed many times. The women of Amritsar congratulated her. The beggars came to ask for money. Mata ji gave everyone money and said: “since my son has been in the Qila, I was worried. Now, that trouble is gone. I am in bliss now. My son’s praises have been sung in the world. The enemy of the Guru’s home has been caught. My son avenged his father’s murder.” There was a great celebration in Amritsar. The Sikh Sangat of Amritsar all heard. Goindwal, Khadoor Sahib and Kartarpur all heard the news that Guru ji caught the sinner. The Bedis, Trehans and the Bhallas all heard the news and were very happy. They all praised Guru ji: “the Guru fulfilled his oath and avenged his father’s death. He is punishing the sinner now.”
5-5 The History of Majnu
Listen to the Katha of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. Make your minds still and listen. The Sangat of Delhi got together in one place. Panchamrit was prepared in great quantities as many Sikhs had come. Some Sikhs came to see Chandoo. Many Sikhs came from their homes to see. Satguru ji was sitting in his court, giving his Darshan to thousands. Many Sikhs brought Prashaad from their homes and offered it to Guru ji. The Mevras did the Ardaas and distributed the Karah Prashaad. The senior Sikhs said to Guru ji: “today your oath is fulfilled. The sinner had been doing bad things since your engagement was called off. We would look at Chandoo and regret writing that letter that told your father about what Chandoo had said. Chandoo used bad language towards the Guru’s home and we wrote that letter to Guru ji. Guru ji accepted our request and called off the engagement. Chandoo felt insulted and since then he disrespected Guru ji. He is a sinner. He is now suffering for his actions. We are worry-free today because Chandoo has been captured by you, Guru ji.” Sri Guru ji spoke: “this is Sri Guru ji’s doing. This sinner’s head is stained. He is receiving the punishment for it. Go and take the revenge. Slap his head 5 times with your shoes before you return to your home.” The Sikhs got up and went to Chandoo. Chandoo was tied to a stake. The Sikhs slapped his head with their shoes. Thousands came to hit Chandoo. After getting slapped in the head, he fainted again. The Sikhs then kicked him. Guru ji would stop the people when he would faint. Guru ji would say: “don’t kill him yet. Leave him alone.” The Sangat came till the afternoon. After the Divaan was done, Guru ji and the Sangat ate Langar. Guru ji laid down to rest.
Jahangir came to see Guru ji along with his viziers and Umraavs. They were wearing expensive clothes and jewellery. Jahangir tied up Chandoo’s wife and son and brought them to Guru ji. He presented them to Guru ji, feeling happy. He bowed to Guru ji and sat next to him. He said: “the sinner Chandoo has done bad things. You arrested him yesterday but I have arrested his wife and son. I present them to you. This is his son. You should punish them as you wish. I don’t want any guilt on my head. The sinners should suffer their own doings.” Guru ji had a lot of compassion. He smiled and said: “show them Chandoo’s state but let these innocent people go. The one who did bad should only suffer. Let his wife and son go.” Chandoo’s wife and son were taken to Chandoo. Chandoo was unconscious. He was with the dogs. He only had a Dhoti on. His body was covered in mud. Chandoo’s wife and son saw him and started to cry. The Sikhs told them to run away. They ran away to their home. Guru ji had them released. The name of Chandoo’s son was Karam Chand.
Guru ji then called the 52 Rajas and asked them: “tell me where you are from?” The Rajas told Guru ji where they were from and which kingdom they had. They asked Jahangir for forgiveness. Guru ji gave the Rajas a Siropa and a good horse, each. Guru ji put a Raj Tilak on the Rajas’ foreheads and presented them to Jahangir. Guru ji said to the Rajas: “if you rebel again, you will be punished. You are to live under Jahangir’s rule. He has forgiven you once.” Jahangir returned their kingdoms on the command of Guru ji. Jahangir gave the Rajas his Umraavs and said: “go and establish their kingdoms. They will be under my rule. They are under the favor of Guru ji otherwise they were going to die in jail.” The Rajas bowed to Guru ji and Jahangir. They went back to their kingdoms and sang the praises of Guru ji. They had faith and devotion in Guru ji. Guru ji’s praises spread throughout the land. The Rajas went back to their states and established their rule again. They sat on their thrones and remembered Guru ji’s command to do the Simran of Satnam. The second command was to rule by the law of the Badshah.
Jahangir sat near Guru ji and talked to him for a while. He made Guru ji happy and felt calm. He was thankful that he was not guilty. He did what Guru ji said. He folded his hands and said: “you are benevolent. I have understood your glory. The greatest Peer in Islam, Sai Mian Mir, has praised you. You saved me from a great trouble. Whenever I remembered you, you came to help me. I consider you my protector. You took my fears away. I am under your command. I will do as you say but please protect me.” Guru ji said: “listen Badshah, the ones who have faith on the Guru, the Guru always protects them. The Guru protects their reputation. The Guru is aware of who comes to the Guru’s sanctuary. They are protected in both worlds. Babar met Guru Nanak Dev ji. The other Badshahs had faith on the Guru. You and I are always on good terms. The Guru protects the Sikhs.” The Badshah bowed to Guru ji and went to his home. Guru ji went to his room and had the drink of “Sukha.”
Guru ji mounted his horse and went for a ride. He rode along the shores of the Yamuna. The flow of the Yamuna was dark and slow. There was greenery everywhere. Guru ji travelled far and got off his horse to experience the peace of the Yamuna. The Sikhs got off their horses as well. Bhai Nanda ji, Bhai Sanghera ji, Bhai Jetha ji, Bhai Ameeya Hayer ji, Bhai Nijjar Randhawa ji, Bhai Kirpala Jhalooko ji, Bhai Langaah ji, and Bhai Pirana ji were all with Guru ji. They all bathed in the Yamuna with Guru ji. They stood by the river and observed the flow of the Yamuna. It was a dark colour with small waves. Bhai Pirana ji said: “Guru ji, who is Majnu? Where we are staying, why is it called Majnu ka Tilla?” Guru ji said: “the history of Majnu is very old. There was princess named Laila who was very beautiful. Majnu had somehow seen Laila and fell in love with her. He lost his senses and got stuck in her love. Laila lived in Lahore. Majnu saw her and she saw him. They both loved each other. Laila had moved to Delhi. Majnu gave a message to a traveller who was going to Delhi. As he gave his message he walked with the messenger. He didn’t realise that he had walked to Delhi with the messenger. He came to Delhi and saw Laila. Laila told Majnu: “stay in this place, I will come meet you here.” After Laila left, Manju stood there waiting for Laila. Laila did not return. He waited for days; which turned to months; which turned to years. He had no sense of his body. His body dried up and became like wood. Laila did not think of Majnu for many years. Majnu did not die due to the power of love. His mind became still. There was a dry wooden stake which Majnu leaned on. A carpenter came to cut the stake. He didn’t know that there was a man there. The carpenter struck his axe and hit Majnu. Majnu opened his eyes and said: “Laila! Have you returned?” The carpenter got scared. He noticed that it was Majnu. He went to the Shah and had Laila sent to Majnu. When Laila met Majnu, Manju was engrossed in love. His love was not with this Laila anymore; he had fallen in love with the ultimate bliss, the Parmeshwar. This happened because he had made his mind still and won it. His love for Laila was no more. He was in love with Akaal Purakh. He was a complete saint. That was the history of Majnu. This is the place where he stood and that’s why it’s known as Majnu ka Tilla.” The Sikhs heard this and understood everything. They all mounted their horses and came back to the camp. They all ate and then rested the night.
