4-61 Jahangir Scared by Lions at Night
Baba Bhudda ji was commanded by Mata Ganga ji to bring Guru Hargobind Sahib ji back from Gwalior. She said: “even if you have to fight a battle, do so. Take the 1,800 mounted warriors you have.” Baba Bhudda ji sent out Hukamnamas to all the villages: “bring your weapons and come to Gwalior. We will fight if we need to.” The Sikhs from Punjab picked up whatever weapons they had in their homes and answered Baba Bhudda ji’s call to arms. They tied their kumerkassas and came. 32,000 people gathered in his army during that Hukamnama. When Guru Hargobind Sahib ji saw the army, he said: “this is the Bhudda Dal. This Panth shall forever carry your name.” This blessing can be seen today as the Shiromani Panth Akaal Bhudda Dal.
Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was very happy to see Baba Bhudda ji. Guru ji said to Baba Bhudda ji: “how is the Sikh Sangat in Amritsar? Mata ji is waiting for her son to come back. My mother must be remembering me. Is Mata ji well? She must be waiting for me? How have you come Baba ji? You are elderly and travelled a long way on a horse. You must be tired. (Baba Bhudda ji was 108 at this time. You have been in the presence of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. You have a great status and you are now old. You should relax and take joy in the Guru’s home. You shouldn’t be travelling so much at your age. You should give Darshan to the Sangat. Doing your Darshan makes one’s sins wash away. Your words are Amrit. Whoever listens to you is filled with joy.” Baba Bhudda ji heard Guru ji’s word and became filled with bliss. He said to Guru ji: “Amritsar is just as you left it. The Keertan and Langar is continuous. The Sangat comes from every direction. They bathe in the Amrit Sarovar with bliss. They then go to Harmandhir Sahib and listen to Keertan. They bring their Dasvands. The only thing is, is that they are missing you. They are waiting for you. They do your Simran. We got news that the Emperor met you with love. We also heard that you killed a lion during the hunt. Your praises spread throughout Hindustan that you are the strongest warrior. The Badshah came to you and respected the Guru’s home. We heard that the Badshah wanted you to go to Gwalior and do Simran for his well-being. When Mata ji heard about you going to Gwalior, she became very worried. She began to think about the Elder Guru ji and became deeply concerned. She is in doubt because of this. Her heart is in pain. She sent her maid to call me. When I met her, she told me her concerns. She couldn’t eat or sleep. She’s concerned about you being in Gwalior. She told me: “go and bring Guru ji back. Fix everything. Fight if you have to. Do what it takes to bring my son back.” When I heard her, I said to her: “don’t worry. Satguru ji is omnipotent. He can do as he pleases. Don’t worry. His glory will grow when he comes back from Gwalior. He will do a great task when he comes back from Gwalior.” She wasn’t calm due to your love. She was shedding tears constantly. She said: “I only have one son who is separated from me for the first time.” You have been away for a long time. Being in Gwalior makes her concerned. She said to me: “you are wise. You should go to Gwalior and solve this problem.” I couldn’t disobey her. I travelled this whole way. (Baba Bhudda ji travelled around 800 km) It is not good to stay here for long. We have decided to take you back now. We will fight if we need to. What is your command now? I will send a message to Mata ji so she is happy. I will send someone to Amritsar right away. She is waiting for her son.” Guru ji heard this and smiled. He said: “tell Mataji that she should be patient. Tell her that I am well and so are the Sikhs with me. I will return in a few days to Amritsar. She shouldn’t worry. If I meet the Badshah now, I will come back to Amritsar.” Baba Bhudda ji wrote a letter and sent it to Mata ji. In this way, Baba Bhudda ji met Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. Guru ji had made the jail into Sach Khand. The prisoners listened to Keertan and Katha all day long. They got Langar and had discussions with Guru ji.
Now, listen to the Katha of Jahangir. Chandoo had cooked up a new scheme. The Badshah was tricked so that he would not think of Guru ji or call him. Chandoo wanted to send the Badshah somewhere else. Chandoo would always say to the Emperor: “let’s go to Delhi and live in peace. We will celebrate the festival of Navroz there in joy.” He would make up new things and get the Umraavs on his side. Chandoo wanted to take him away from Gwalior. Chandoo would say to his allies: “get the Badshah on his elephant some how. Let’s go home now.” Everyone in the court would say: “let’s go home to Delhi with joy.” Everyone decided to go to Delhi. Jahangir mounted his elephant and headed to Delhi. They travelled and arrived in Delhi.
Jahangir met his Begums with joy. Chandoo was happy that the Badshah was away from Gwalior and wouldn’t think about Guru ji. Jahangir forgot about Guru ji as he left Gwalior. Nobody talked about it either. Chandoo thought to himself: “the Guru is now a prisoner. He will die there.” Chandoo had prayers done to the Peers. We went to their graves and distributed sweets that his enemy was in a jail. He thought to himself: “my worries are gone. I had Guru Arjan Dev ji killed and now his son is in jail. I will have him killed there. I will sleep in peace now. I will bow to all the Peers. They helped me with their powers.” This fool thought in this way.
In this way, many days passed and the Emperor did not think of calling Guru ji. In this time, the Sikhs were getting ready to use their powers to scare Jahangir. Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Pirana ji used their powers at night. Bhai Pirana ji and Bhai Jetha ji transformed into real big lions with their powers. Jahangir was sleeping in his big palace known as the Rang Mahal. It was made with mirrors on the inside. There was a really big bed in his room. There was a lot of security there. Men and women stayed away to guard the place. They changed their shifts at different times. Jahangir was sleeping in peace. Bhai Pirana ji and Bhai Jetha ji came inside the palace with their powers. Nobody could see them. They were morphed into big lions with big teeth. Their manes were really big. Their claws were sharp. Their eyes were red. Their mouths were ferocious. They came close to Jahangir and placed their forelimbs on top of his chest. Jahangir woke up with a startle and saw the two lions on his chest. He saw the ferocious teeth and began to scream out loud. He thought to himself: “the Saad Sati has finally come! To save me from this, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji is doing Simran for me in the Gwalior Qila.” He got really scared and said: “Sri Hargobind ji! Come and save me! Save me from these lions!” When he thought of Guru ji, Sri Guru ji got up from his sleep and came to make the lions go away. Both of the lions backed off. They roared and scared the Badshah. The Badshah yelled again: “Guru ji save me! Make these two lions go away.” Guru ji took two handkerchiefs and put them into the lions’ mouths. The lions backed off. The lions became humans and said to Jahangir: “Guru ji saved you today but you have not considered his greatness. Don’t forget him.” The Sikhs disappeared. The Badshah was so scared he couldn’t go to sleep. He kept thinking all night.
In the morning, Jahangir called all his Nazoomis. The Nazoomis did their Salaams. Jahangir told them what happened: “I am really scared. I couldn’t sleep all night long. Two lions came and pressed my chest with their forelimbs. You told me about the Saad Sati. It came in the form of two lions. This is the reason I sent Guru ji to Gwalior so he could do Simran for me. When I said Guru ji’s name, he came and saved me from the two lions.” The Nazoomis heard him and spoke from the Jeev perspective: “when a person is in deep sleep, the Indriyas emerge into the chest along with the Bhuddi and mind. A person is not aware of their body. When the conscience comes out of that, it goes in to the dream state. There is a very small nerve in the neck, in which a whole universe is created where you see dreams. It makes mountains, lakes, sun, moon and skies. That is where the conscience resides during the dream state. The nerve is called the “Hitha Nari.” Fear, Joy, sorrow, friend and for are all there. After that, a person wakes up and the dream world is gone. The Aatma lives in the right eye. The Bhuddi lives in the left eye. The 3 states have their respective places where the Jeev lives. You were observing a dream, oh King. You created the lion and got scared of it. When you awoke, it was all gone. Don’t worry about this. You will be fine now.” The Badshah heard this and said: “I was awake when I saw the lions. I awoke then. They were scaring me. The Guru came and sent the lions off. They disappeared as I watched. The Guru stopped them otherwise they were going to kill me.” The Nazoomis said: “the wise people would advise that it may be a ghost. Sleep today and we will put an iron cage around you. The ghosts or magic spells will not affect you then. Keep a chainmail sheet on the walls. The guards will keep watch. We will call the people who understand black magic and get them to put a boundary around your room. Leave Guru Hargobind Sahib ji in Gwalior and don’t mention about bringing him here. He is doing Simran of Allah everyday so the Saad Sati doesn’t come near you. The Saad Sati is getting weaker. It is thanks to Allah you are safe. I was right to look in my book of the instructions I gave you. I was right that there is no other solution other than what I instructed.” Chandoo came to the court and agreed with the Nazoomi. The other officers also agreed. Jahangir listened to all of them and couldn’t see through their lies.
Bhai Vizier Khan ji heard this and was upset. He thought to himself: “this fool is giving bad advice to the Emperor.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji couldn’t say anything. He was quiet, seeing the Emperor agreeing with Chandoo.
4-62 Bhai Jetha ji is given Teachings of Tolerance
The day was over and evening had come. The Badshah did what the Nazoomis told him to do. He set up more guards and metal chains everywhere. The witch doctors and spiritual healers came to do their spells. An iron cage was set up around the Badshah’s bed. Many guards stayed awake and guarded his room. There was a strict watch. The Badshah felt sleepy and fell asleep. At midnight, Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Pirana ji came again, transformed as lions. The Badshah woke up and saw the lions coming towards him. They had big mouths with big teeth. The Emperor got scared and folded his hands. He said: “Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, save me! Only you can save me from these lions. I am your servant. Save me!” Guru ji heard Jahangir’s Ardaas and came to help him. He took two handkerchiefs and pushed the lions back. As the lions would come forward, Guru ji would tell them to go back. This carried on for about an hour and a half. The lions then turned into humans and said: “look! If Guru ji didn’t save you, we would have eaten you. The Satguru that saves you, why do you forget him? You call Guru ji at night when you are scared. In the day, you want to keep him far from you. We would have eaten you if Guru ji didn’t come. You were lucky today. We will eat you tomorrow.” The Sikhs disappeared. The Badshah could not sleep the rest of the night. He said to himself: “this is weird. I don’t understand what’s going on. Where do they come from? They praise the Guru and then become humans. Where do they disappear to? Why do they become lions? Are they humans or are they lions? Why do they scare me?” He thought like this till morning. He got up in worry.
The Badshah called Chandoo and all his wise people to his court. The Nazoomis came. The witch-doctors came. The healers came. The Umraavs were present. They all came running and did their Salaams, 7 times. The Badshah said: “what guards did you set up? Only the Guru saved me, otherwise the lions would have eaten me. The lions were on my bed. Your spells didn’t work. You set up an iron cage with chainmail on the walls, the lions still came. The guards and healers were awake. The lions couldn’t be stopped. They opened their mouths and looked like they were going to eat me. I prayed to Guru ji to save me. He came and saved me. He pushed the lions back with his strength. Your spells did not work. What is this magic? Why can’t you tell me what is happening to me? I spent the night in fear. Do something so this stops. I pay you so much money for my help. I was going to be eaten alive.” The Nazoomis and witch-doctors heard this and said: “you seem to have a physical illness. This is not a job for us. It can’t be ghosts then. We need a doctor to see what illness you have. Call out in Delhi if someone can see you who knows what this is. The good doctors who know this skill will come to your aid. First show your servants and workers. This is important. You need to get better.” The Emperor had to listen to them. He sent messages to all the doctors in Delhi.
The different doctors came to check the Badshah. He would tell them: “two lions come to eat me and I call Guru ji who saves me.” The doctors checked him and couldn’t find any illness. They were surprised to hear about lions coming. They couldn’t figure it out. They would give some hope to Jahangir and prescribe some medicine.
Bhai Jetha ji heard the call and went to Jahangir dressed as a doctor. He wore an expensive top and shoes. He came inside the palace and noticed everyone was worried. The Nazoomis, Umraavs, magicians were all worried. The Badshah was scared. His doubt was increasing. He was worried he would die. Bhai Jetha ji was seen by the court officers and welcomed with joy. Bhai Jetha ji came close to the Emperor. The Emperor put his arm forward for the doctor to check. Bhai Jetha ji said: “I don’t check nerves. Don’t tell me anything. I will tell you everything. What kind of a doctor checks nerves? Your face is telling me what your problem is. My teacher is complete. He is skilled and always tells the truth. I have figured out your illness. I will tell you privately. I won’t speak amongst all these people. If the Mantra is revealed, it will become fruitless.” Jahangir heard this and went to another room with Bhai Jetha ji. Bhai Jetha ji sat besides Jahangir in a closed room. He said to him: “I want you to swear upon Khuddah that if whatever I say is true, you will accept it. The truth is that you are not sick. You are being scared at night. Your heart is not calm now. Your mind is flickering like a flame in the wind.” The Emperor said: “yes! You are speaking the truth. You have found the truth to my pain.” Bhai Jetha ji continued: “listen, two lions come to you at night. They came to eat you with anger but Guru ji comes and pushes them back. He saves you otherwise they would eat you. The lions tell you to understand the greatness of the Guru and don’t forget him. They give you the solution but why don’t you understand? I will tell you how to get rid of your problems.” When Bhai Jetha ji said this, Jahangir was fully convinced and said: “you are correct! How can the lions be stopped? Tell me! I will be convinced that your teacher is complete. How can the lions be stopped? I don’t know what the lions are trying to tell me. I already know that Guru ji is great.” Bhai Jetha ji noticed that the Badshah trusted him now. He said to Jahangir: “you sent Guru Hargobind Sahib ji to the fort and didn’t see how he was. You sent him for 40 days and it has been longer than that. Many days have passed over 40 days. You are not calling Guru ji to you. You lied to Guru ji. This is the reason for your fear and problems. The lions are telling you this. If you don’t call the Guru right now by sending a person, the lions will do something bad to you. They won’t be stopped by anyone. Your witch-doctors won’t be able to stop them. The lions have Akaal Purakh’s Shakti. You will regret this if you don’t call Guru ji right now. Fold your hands and bow towards Gwalior. Ask Guru ji for forgiveness and for him to show you his greatness. Send a messenger right now and call Guru ji. Do his Darshan and bow to his feet. I asked you to come to a private place because you have a lot of bad advisors around you. Don’t listen to anyone else. If you do this right now, the lions won’t come. If you don’t do this, then I don’t take any responsibilities.” The Emperor heard this and wrote a Parvana right away. When he understood the reality, he wished to see Guru Sahib right away. He bowed to Bhai Jetha ji, as he was impressed with his skill. He called his servants and said: “bring money, gold and a nice necklace.” Bhai Jetha ji said: “I don’t sell my skill. I don’t need money. When you are well, I will take what I need. I will be happy when Guru ji comes and you are cured.” Bhai Jetha ji left the palace.
Jahangir called his senior Umarov and said: “go to Gwalior right away. Go to Satguru ji and take these gifts I am about to give you. Bow to his feet and ask him to come to Delhi. Ask him to give me his Darshan and forgiveness.” The Umarov along with senior officers went to Gwalior. Jahangir bowed towards Guru ji (in the direction of Gwalior) and said: “please forgive me. I am in your sanctuary now.” The Badshah thought to himself: “I will be peaceful tonight. I hope I don’t see the lions. I lied to Guru ji. I have suffered the nights. I hope nothing bothers me now. I will stay under Guru ji’s command. If I see the lions tonight, I will do something else then.”
When Bhai Jetha ji went back to Satguru ji, Satguru ji knew what he had done. Baba Bhudda ji was sitting with Guru ji along with other Sikhs and servants. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “Bhai Jetha, get up and go to the shores of the Yamuna. Take his Ganga Sagar and fill it with the water from the Yamuna.” Bhai Jetha ji went right away and brought back the water. He placed the Ganga Sagar in front of Guru ji. Guru ji then said: “go back and put the water into the Yamuna again.” Everyone, including Bhai Jetha ji, was surprised to hear this. Bhai Jetha ji put the water back into the Yamuna. Bhai Jetha ji came back and stood in front of Guru ji with his hands folded. Guru ji spoke to give Bhai Jetha ji the teachings of tolerance: “when you filled the Ganga Sagar with water, did the water level of the river go down? When you went back to put the water in the Yamuna, did the water level rise? What did you see?” Bhai Jetha ji was standing with his hands folded. He said: “the river is constantly flowing. Taking one pot of water does not affect the water level, nor does putting one pot of water back into it affect it.” The son of Guru Arjan Dev ji then spoke: “understand this within yourself: the power of the Guru’s home is the flow of the water. The flow is unaffected. You have achieved the equivalent power of one pot full of Seva. You couldn’t handle that. From where you achieved this power, did you not think that there was already power there? Think about all this. Whose permission did you take to go to the Badshah and showed him your powers? You deserve to be punished. You didn’t stay within the will of the Guru.” Bhai Jetha ji folded his hands and said: “I have obeyed the Guru’s words with love. Your Sangat does not see any difference between you and Baba Bhudda ji. I had his permission and saw the pain of the Sangat. Everyone was in pain without you. They are all seeking your Darshan. I did this for everyone else so the Sikhs are not worried anymore. I didn’t show powers for my own gains. Whatever you wish to do, please go ahead and do that.” Baba Bhudda ji spoke up after hearing this: “he had Mata Ganga ji’s permission. She had told me continuously to get you out of here by any means. She sent me here for that purpose. Thinking about the elder Guru ji’s ways, the mind is scared thinking of the worst. I have been sent on this far journey for that purpose. If this effort was not made, my trip would have been fruitless. The Sikh Sangat is in Mata ji’s protection. She saw the wishes of the Sangat and sent me here. She told me to do what it takes. You can do as you please now.” Listening to his mother’s message from Baba Bhudda ji, the master of the world then spoke: “if this effort has been done by Baba Bhudda ji’s and Mata ji’s advice, then what else can I say. What you did was wrong though. Tolerating the intolerable is the best thing to do. The saints all praise this.”
4-63 Vizier Khan comes to take Guru ji
The Senapati, general, of the Sikh Dal sent a messenger to Guru ji inside the Qila. The Dal was camped outside, where today stands the Chauni Nihang Singha Bhudda Dal Baba Bhudda Sahib ji, on the G.T. Road about 5 km away from the Gwalior Qila. The messenger came to Guru ji and bowed to him. He did a request to Guru ji: “all of the horses are outside. There is very less green grass in Agra for the horses to eat. They are only eating grains. We can’t find green grass anywhere. The officers of the Emperor give very less grass. The grass they do give is dirty and low quality. Your horses are getting weaker. Guru ji heard this and said: “Baba Bhudda ji, you are wise and you have the solution for everything. You should go and take care of the Dal. Till I don’t come out of the Qila, stay with the Dal and take care of them. Prepare food and feed for the Dal. Spend as much money as you need. Take the Dal and the horses and leave Agra as there is no grass here. We need to take care of our horses. Go to the Baanger Desh (Haryana area). Set up camp there. When I call for you, come and bring the Dal with you. The Sangat will do the Seva of the Dal. There will be green grass there for the horses.” Baba Bhudda ji obeyed Guru ji’s words and got ready. He bowed to Guru ji and went to Agra where the Dal was.
Baba Bhudda ji stayed in the Dal that night. The soldiers bowed to Baba ji and served him. Baba ji noticed that the horses were weaker. He said: “in the morning we will leave this area.” They left in the morning and headed towards Rohtak. They reached Delhi and noticed that there was a lot of green grass there. They found out where the open fields were and headed there. They reached Rohtak and set up camp. They were happy to see the green grass there. Baba ji took care of all the horses and got them what they needed. He also provided for the soldiers of their needs as well. Until Guru ji didn’t meet the Emperor, Baba Bhudda ji stayed in that area. Kavi Santokh Singh ji has seen that place but the place was destroyed by the time of Bhai Vir Singh ji. Kavi Santokh Singh ji said: “I can see the signs of that place where Baba Bhudda ji stayed. People called it the “Chauni of Baba Bhudda ji.” Sometimes a Sikh would come to do Seva of the Gurduara and sometimes they would leave. They area is dominantly Turk and so they treat the Sikhs badly there. The Sikhs would leave after a while.”
The Umarov of the Badshah came to see Guru ji. He met Guru ji and bowed to his feet. He made a request to Guru ji: “Guru ji, I bow a second time on behalf of my King. He bows to you many times and says: “Guru ji, you protected me from the Saad Sati, otherwise the lions would have eaten me. Please come back to Delhi and give me your Darshan. You are the complete temple of virtue.” Guru ji replied: “tell the Emperor, I am fine here. I am doing Simran of the Creator here in solitude. I am in bliss. Since the time I came here, the Raja prisoners are peaceful because of me. I am happy and so the prisoners are happy too. They are getting food and peace now. Why would anyone leave such a great place where one is happy and so are others? Satsang happens here as well as Langar.” The Umarov went back to the Emperor.
The Umarov said to the Emperor: “Guru ji says that he is happy in the Qila. Because he is there, the prisoners are happy as well. He says: “how can I leave this place? The prisoners are happy. I can’t make them sad now. I can’t leave.” The Badshah was surprised. He thought to himself: “why doesn’t Guru ji want to come back? Since I have wanted him to come back, I haven’t been scared at night anymore. Either he thinks I have lied to him or there is some other reason. The Guru that saved my life is not accepting my plea.” Jahangir kept thinking many things. He thought to himself: “if I leave Guru ji there, the lions will come back. If Guru ji is not happy, the lions will kill me.” After thinking long and hard, he thought of a plan: “Vizier Khan is the Guru’s Sikh. Guru ji listens to Vizier Khan. I should send him as he knows Guru ji’s personality. He always praises Guru ji to me. He is the one that brought Guru ji from Amritsar. The other people lied about Guru ji.” Jahangir called Bhai Vizier Khan ji to him.
Jahangir told Vizier Khan ji the whole story of the lions coming to scare him: “I have called Guru ji because the lions wanted me to. Guru ji doesn’t want to come now. You should go and bring him here. Talk to him with love.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji said with his hands folded: “your officers are haters of the Guru and set up a fake illness. Guru ji is the saint of saints, the Guru of Gurus and the Peer of Peers. He is patient and tolerant. He does not have any attachments to his body. He sees it as a piece of grass. He tolerates the fraudulent ways of your officers. He doesn’t care about anything. If he wanted to, he can kill all these people with one word. Nobody can stand in front of him. You have many officers who want you to become enemies of the Guru. If you understand this properly, you will see who is the guilty and who is the innocent. You imprison the innocent and give status to the guilty. The elder Gurus were happy with your elders. Babar Chavghutta (Chagatai) was blessed by Guru Nanak Dev ji with the kingdom of Hindustan. He gave him 7 generations of rule for just 7 fistfuls of cannabis. Humayun lost his kingdom to Sher Shah Suri and then went to Guru Angad Dev ji in Khadoor. He was leaving the country and visited Guru ji on his way. Guru ji was teaching children when Humayun came. Guru Angad Dev ji was on the throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji and living in Khadoor. Your grandfather stood there for a long time and got tired. Guru ji was busy with the children. The house of virtues didn’t look towards the Emperor; to test his faith. Guru Angad Dev ji didn’t say anything. The Emperor got angry and thought to himself: “the Guru does not look at me. I am the Emperor of Hindustan. He didn’t give me respect or make me sit besides him. He didn’t look at me. He is egotistical.” Humayun was filled with ego. He got angry and wanted to kill Guru ji. He placed his hand on the hilt of his sword, while thinking: “I will cut him in two pieces and leave to my homeland.” As he tried to pull his sword, his sword was stuck and his hand got attached to the hilt. He realised his mistakes and wanted Guru ji to forgive him. Guru Angad Dev ji looked up and said to Humayun: “you wanted to take the sword and kill me in anger? You should have showed this anger on the battlefield towards Sher Shah Suri. He fought a hard battle and kicked you out of the country. I would have considered you a Man then, if you fought bravely then. If you wouldn’t have placed your hand on the hilt of your sword, you would have gotten your kingdom back right now. Since you have made a mistake but still came to the Guru’s house, you are forgiven. Go back to your homeland and collect an army. Come back after 12 years. You will get your kingdom back from Sher Shah’s son, Salim (Islam) Shah Suri. (Sher Shah Suri constructed the Sher Shah Suri Marg known as the G.T. Road). There greatest reason for this is that Guru Nanak Dev ji’s blessings will be fulfilled.” The embarrassed Emperor heard Guru Angad Dev ji and bowed. His hand was released from the hilt. He left with his men. He went to his homeland and collected an army. He came back after 12 years and got his kingdom back. His son was Akbar. He went to Guru Amardas ji, barefoot. He got blessings to win Chittorgarh. He went to Goindwal on his way to Lahore and signed the Jagirs of many villages to Guru Amardas ji’s daughter. He made Guru ji happy. He had love and devotion towards Guru ji. You are Akbar’s son. Do as your fathers and forefathers did. Make Guru ji happy and take his blessings. He is complete. He will fulfill your wishes.” Jahangir was happy and said: “Vizier Khan you are great!” He gave him an expensive Siropa. He called for 5,000 Rajitpuns and said: “you have given me great advice today. I will be blessed because of this. Don’t delay. Go and get Guru ji. Go to him and request him to come.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji mounted his horse and went to Gwalior.
The 52 kings that were imprisoned in the Gwalior Qila heard that Guru ji was being called to Delhi. They got worried and became depressed. They didn’t want to be separated from Guru ji. They were happy listening to Keertan and eating Langar. They all came to Guru ji and bowed to his feet. They all stood up and folded their hands. They placed their heads on Guru ji’s feet and cried. They said: “Sri Guru ji, there is no one greater than you. Who will save us from this Hell of a Jail? There is no one else who can protect us. Sri Kartar, the generous one; we see you as that Parmeshwar. Please protect us seeing us as your servants. Give us the blessing of fearlessness. Make us without sorrow. You protect the poor and weak. You are the “Gareeb Nivaaj.” We are in your sanctuary; just like the elephant that remembered you. Prabhoo ji came barefoot to protect the elephant. Sri Guru ji, you are omnipotent. You can do anything. To kill or create is in your hands. You can do as you please. Only you can free us from this jail. We have no other hope from anyone else. We are sentenced to stay here for the rest of our lives and die here. We hope that you will free us from here.” The Rajas spoke with humility. Guru ji was generous and gave them hope: “I will keep you all with me. I will take all of you from here or else I will stay here with you. You will be free from bonds. Do the Simran of Satnam.” The Rajas were happy to hear this. They said: “your words are permanent. You will complete this.” They were so happy that they felt like they were already free. They had the hope of being free.
4-64 Peer Mian Meer meets Jahangir
When Bhai Vizier Khan ji left Delhi, an elderly Peer named Sai Mian Meer ji came to Delhi. The Badshah went to go see him. He was very old and weak. His attention was always focused inwards towards his Aatma. His eyebrows were very long and white. His eyes were always closed. The eyebrows were always over his eyes. He would only talk if someone talked to him, otherwise he would stay quiet. His focus was instilled in Jog. Because of Jog, his life was extended. He would read Gurbani and the Quran. He kept his body for the good of the world. He did not care for the worldly pleasures. He was engrossed in the bliss of Parmatma. He was in Anand. The Emperors before Jahangir respected Sai Mian Meer ji. He would travel on a palanquin. The Emperor travelled barefoot in front of him. He had faith in him.
Jahangir came to meet the Peer. He bowed to the Peer and sat down. The people that were there, were told to go away. The two were alone in the room. The Badshah didn’t keep anyone else with him. Jahangir said: “Peer ji, tell me the signs of a saint. Please tell me what the saints are like. How are they one with Khuddah and how do they not feel joy or sorrow? I hear they are never in pain.” Sai Mian Meer ji said: “what you have asked cannot be described. I will tell you the jewellery of the saints: they are away from all pleasures and vices. They control their desires. They have no wishes. They are always in one state. They are connected to the One. Their mind is cool and without desire. This is called “Sahijabriti.” If something happens, they accept it. They are alive but Mukat. They have Moksha. They can kill all their wants. They don’t let any desires arise. They live like dead people. They let go of all of the pleasures and only seek the bliss of the Aatma. They are connected to the consciousness of the Sat, Chit and Anand. They see the pleasures of the world like grass. Their minds and Indriyas are in their control. They are in bliss with what they have. They don’t make an effort to gain things of special tastes. They accept what they have. Their minds are still. They don’t think. They have all the powers of Akaal Purakh. They can do as they wish. They have no wish to use the powers. They are extremely powerful. They can blow away the whole universe with one blow. They can cut the sun and moon to pieces. They can break the stars and bring them into their hands. They never break the rules of Nature though. They have destroyed their wishes. If a wish arises in their mind, this state goes away. They control their wishes for this reason. They are like the guards of their minds. They don’t want any wish to arise in their mind. They don’t let wishes arise. Their state is like that of a dead person. They are engrossed in the bliss of the Brahm. I will show you an example of a Saint. Guru Ramdas ji’s son Guru Arjan Dev ji was the destroyer of pain, but he was imprisoned in Lahore and tortured by sinners; the sinner said: “I will take a Lakh Rajitpuns and let you sleep or give you water,” Guru ji did not sleep or drink water. He didn’t eat either. He stayed where he was. His Sikhs were in pain. Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Pirana ji said: “command us; so we can destroy Lahore and Delhi. These Turks are nothing in front of you. We can destroy them.” Guru ji said: “where did you get this power from?” The Sikhs said: “we did your Seva and got this power.” Guru ji said: “so don’t you think the person’s whose Seva you did has any powers?” The Sikhs said: “you are the ocean of power. You have no beginning and no end. You are the Prabhoo.” Guru ji said: “then stay quiet and watch what I do. Akaal Purakh is doing as he pleases.” Guru ji was then tortured. He tolerated all of the pain. I wanted to meet Guru Arjan Dev ji and so I went to him. I bowed to him and said: “oh Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, you are Dhan! There is nobody else like you in the world. You have so much courage that nobody else can tolerate what you did.”
Jahangir got anxious and scared hearing all this. He folded his hands and said to the Peer: “nobody advised me as to how much of a calm and peaceful saint Guru Arjan Dev ji was. Nobody told me his greatness. It’s been a long time since this event, but you have told me today.” The Peer said: “you are a man of the world, engrossed deeply into the world. You won’t understand the greatness of the Guru. I myself don’t even know the full greatness of the Guru so how would I tell you?” The Emperor said: “he is a Hindu though. How can he be great? Speaking of his greatness is against Islam. Why do you speak of his greatness?” Sai Mian Meer ji said: “oh Emperor, listen to the reason of his greatness: when all of us Peers visit the court of Allah, it is the Guru who listens to all of our words. The Peers that come from inside the court, they all meet him. All of the Peers visit him. We don’t see anyone greater than him. Everyone visiting the court knows that there is no difference between Khuddah and him. Whoever sits on the throne of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, becomes Guru Nanak Dev ji. If you don’t believe what I am saying, then asks the other Peers.” Jahangir understood this and said: “Peer ji, why didn’t you tell me this before? I would have released him with respect and bowed to him for his blessings.” Peer ji said: “what can we say in front of Guru ji? He didn’t let us speak of us greatness. When his goal was fulfilled, we found out what happened after, as he had taken our consciousness away. Guru Arjan Dev ji commanded all the saints, Peers, Devatas and powers not to interfere in his play. He commanded Brahma, Shivji and Vishnu not to come. He said: “I have set this play in motion. No Devata should come to show their powers.” The 9 Naths, 84 Siddhas, Peers, Fakirs, Satis and Sanyasis were scared of Guru ji and backed off. They didn’t dare use their powers. Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji was the supreme omnipotent being. His right hand had all the Kanis (powers). His left hand had even more. If he were to release even one of those powers, the Emperor, subject, sky, sun, moon and earth would have been destroyed. They would have ceased to exist. No powerful person could face him. He didn’t do this though. He was powerful but showed himself as powerless. This was the greatness of his heart. He didn’t let any wish arise in his mind. He had Sahij. His heart was calm. He was engrossed in the bliss of the Aatma. He was in the state of Mukti while being alive. He was always in the one state of mind. He did not forget. He would have felt pain if there was pain inside of him but he was the treasure of joy, peace and compassion. He let go of his body near the Ravi which was cremated with sandalwood. A lot of Sangat gathered there and showered his body with flowers. Fragrances of Rose, sandalwood and Ambeer were sprayed. All of Lahore was there. Keertan happened at that place.” The Badshah was surprised to hear this. He could not speak further as he had realised what a big mistake he had made. He bowed to Sai Mian Meer ji and left.
The Badshah thought to himself: “Chandoo has committed a crime and sin. The Sadhoos blame me for it. Chandoo used to tell me that the Guru kept thieves with him. He lied to me. Chandoo has done the sin and will drag me to Hell as well. The Guru’s son is with me. I will ask him for forgiveness. I will arrest Chandoo and make Guru ji happy. I will fold my hands and ask to be forgiven. That is the only way I will be without fault, if Guru Hargobind Sahib ji will be happy.” In this way the Badshah thought and went quiet. He waited for Guru Hargobind Sahib ji to come to him. Bhai Vizier Khan ji had gone to get Guru ji.
4-65 Vizier Khan comes back
Bhai Vizier Khan ji was really happy, going to Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. He reached Gwalior and went inside the fort. He bowed to Guru ji with humility upon seeing him. It was like a thirsty person getting water, the state of Bhai Vizier Khan ji. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji saw Bhai Vizier Khan ji and said: “welcome Vizier Khan, the beloved of the Guru. Are you and your family well? Tell me, how is the Badshah?” Hearing the sweet words of Guru ji, Vizier Khan lowered his eyes out of shame. He folded his hands and said: “everything is well by your blessings. My family is well. The children are happy. I am embarrassed that I have been not useful for you. I couldn’t do any Seva for you. You are the master of all the hearts. You are omniscient. You know what is good and bad right away. You know good people from the bad. Everything happens with your will. Servants like us follow the Dharam of praying to you with our hands folded. Chandoo is a sinner. He needs to be punished. He keeps saying bad things about you to the Badshah. He is an enemy of the Guru’s home. He is making up many schemes. You should stop forgiving him. Till he is alive, he is being forgiven. Please think of killing him. When you do this, you won’t stop and nobody will be able to stop you. The Emperor has sent me to you for a specific reason. He has sent me with these words: “you have given me the gift of a second life. Please come and give me your Darshan. I want to see the Gyaan filled form. I wait for you day and night. When will the day come that I see you. I sent you an Umarov whom you rejected. I got worried after that.” The Badshah called me and said: “go and bring Guru ji.” Please come to the Badshah and give him your Holy Darshan. It is time to fulfill your tasks now.” Guru ji heard him and said: “there is one problem for me to leave here now. When I came to this jail, the prisoners of this jail became peaceful. They got enough to eat and drink. They have the hope of being released from here now. When they heard that the Badshah has called for me, they came to my sanctuary and said to me: “there is no one who can help us now. We are in your protection. You can kill us now or keep us alive.” Vizier Khan, it is my promise that I don’t reject anyone who comes to my sanctuary. Whoever comes to me in pain and says once: “Guru Hargobind, I am yours,” forget about jails like this, I don’t let the Jumms come near them. Whoever doesn’t protect the servants when they are alive, what point is there in protecting them when they are dead? I fulfil their wishes and save them from trouble. These Rajas are sentenced to prison for life. They have no hope of leaving here alive. If the Badshah agrees to releasing the Rajas, then he can call me to Delhi. Otherwise, I will stay here and take care of these Rajas. The enemy of the Guru’s home, they won’t be alive for long. They will die a horrible death and go to Hell. Their death is near. They will leave their families and homes now. Go and tell the Badshah what I have told you. Tell him about the prisoners. I will come out of here with the prisoners. I will stay here otherwise.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji heard this and thought to himself: “this is a difficult task.” He didn’t say anything but kept thinking to himself: “I wonder if the Badshah will agree to this.” He started thinking of different scenarios but then realised that this is not difficult for Guru ji. “He can do the impossible. He can destroy permanent things too. It is not right to say anything to Guru ji. I should obey and give the message to Jahangir. I will give the message as is. This is my Dharma.” In this way he thought and said to Guru ji: “you are compassionate, Guru ji. These Rajas were in pain and came to your sanctuary. You are fulfilling your promise in protecting the seekers of sanctuary. There is no doubt that you protect them.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji bowed and left for Delhi.
Reaching Delhi in a few days, Bhai Vizier Khan bowed to Jahangir with respect. The Badshah said: “tell me how Guru ji is. Did he see my love? Did he decide to come? I am waiting for him all the time. I look towards the road, hoping to see him soon. He will take my troubles away.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji said: “listen Badshah, Guru ji prays for your wellness. He has spoken blessed words for you. They thing is, there is a problem for him to come now. Only you can solve this problem though. Otherwise I would have done it myself and brought Guru ji. The Rajas in the Gwalior prison have come to the sanctuary of Guru ji. It is Guru ji’s promise to protect the seekers of sanctuary. Guru ji won’t come out of the Qila. He won’t leave unless the Rajas are released with him. He will stay there and do the Simran of Guru Nanak Dev ji Bhagavan.” The Emperor heard this and said: “I made a great effort in catching those Rajas. Many soldiers of mine died in arresting those Rajas. I spent a lot of money on them. If I let the Rajas go, they will start another rebellion in my country. They will loot my villages if I let them go. They will declare war on me. I used all my strength and imprisoning them. How can I let them go? They are guilty of rebellion. They should be punished. If they come out, they will cause chaos. They will destroy my villages.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji said: “you are radiant and great. No Raja can defeat you. They hear your name and run away. Khuddah has protected your body. That’s all we care about. The world is only till we exist. Country, treasury, army and kingdom; it is only there till we are alive. Think about the wellness of your body. Don’t think about anything else. Human life is rare. The life of a king is even more rare. You have all the joys of life. All of the fraud is done by Chandoo. It’s because of Chandoo that Guru ji is in the Qila. You should now do what Guru Hargobind ji is saying. If you don’t listen to him, the night is near. You know what happens at night if you don’t do as Guru ji wishes. You can do as you please. You should do what is best for you. Don’t listen to anyone else. Your advisors are bad. Think about good and bad yourself. I am your well-wisher. I want your body healthy and well.” The Badshah was surprised. He said: “the Rajas who are in the prison, if I give the order to release them with a fine and don’t do any other fights, I will get a lot of money. If I do release them, I already spent a lot of money in catching them. I sent Guru ji there. The Rajas met him. Guru ji has blessed them and wants to release them. I have to release them; otherwise I’ll be facing trouble at night. I shouldn’t have sent Guru ji there. That was a bad move. This is Chandoo’s fault. He told me to do this. Chandoo has only done wrong. This sinner should be punished. Whatever I do, it is bad. If I release the Rajas, it is bad politics. If I don’t, I may die at night.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji spoke: “think of your well-being. If you are well, everything is good. If you are dead, there is no use to anything. Joy is only till we are alive. The dead can’t be in joy. What is right to do, wise people don’t think about it. You said you spent millions on them. Is it more than your body? Who cares about the money. Do what makes you peaceful. Guru ji will be in the middle of this task. Nothing bad will happen. The Rajas will do as Guru ji says. They won’t rebel. Guru ji will command them not to. Wherever you send the Rajas, they will go. They have been in jail for many years. They will come out with the help of Guru ji.” The Badshah thought about how he was going to release the Rajas.
4-66 The Bandhi Chhorr comes to Delhi
Jahangir thought with all his wisdom. He wanted only some of the Rajas to be released. The rest he wanted to stay. He thought of many plans for Guru ji to come to him. He wanted to meet Guru ji without any fear or doubt. He didn’t want to be afraid at night anymore. After a while, Jahangir spoke: “listen Vizier Khan, I have a plan: go and state a request in front of Guru ji and say to him: “please have compassion and come to see me. Whoever can hold on to the pleats of your Chola, can be released as you come out of the Qila. Those will be considered as blessed by you. You would have given them the gift of life. Please do this favour.” This should be a good compromise. He should be happy as he comes out. Make sure he is happy when he comes to Delhi. Go now but keep this a secret. Only state my offer to Guru ji. Have some of the Rajas released. Bring Guru ji to me. Go quickly. Give him as mush respect as you can. Make sure he his happy.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji did his Salaam to the Emperor. He mounted his horse and headed to Gwalior with some soldiers.
Bhai Vizier Khan ji reached Gwalior and got off from his horse. He washed himself with water and went into the fort. He changed his clothes before seeing Guru ji. He came to Guru ji, where he was sitting and bowed to him. He folded his hands and placed his head on Guru ji’s feet. He then said to Guru ji: “please rise Gareeb Nivaaj and take as many Rajas, who can hold the pleats of your chola, as you come out. This is the order of the Badshah.” The officers were told the command as well: “whoever can hold on to Guru ji’s Chola can be freed from the jail. Their chains are to be broken once they come outside.” Sri Satguru Hargobind Sahib ji understood the Badshah’s cleverness and called for his new chola. The omniscient Guru had already had a Chola made with 50 pleats. The servant quickly got his chola. Guru ji had tied a red Cheera Dastaar with golden thread-work on each end. It was a beautiful Dastaar. His face was radiant. He was illuminating. He wore a Jamma Chola that had 50 pleats on the sides and 2 on the front. It was a big and beautiful Chola because Guru ji had a very tall and wide figure. The Chola went below his knees and the pleats hung off his chest. He had a Jigha tied to his Dastaar with expensive gems and stones on it. He had golden earrings in his ears and golden bracelets on his wrists. His eyes were really big. His biceps and triceps were huge. His arms looked like the trunks of elephants. He had armlets with gems around his arms. He wore a pearl necklace with diamonds in them. He wore rings with gems in them. His form was very royal and saintly. He had an expensive “dakool,” scarf, on his shoulder. It had zarri work on it. He wore 2 long and thick Teghas fastened to his Gatra. He was like a powerful lion getting ready. His shield had 5 golden phulls on them. He fastened that to his back. His quiver had gold craftmanship with diamonds and gems on them. He tied that to his shoulder. He held a strong bow and hung it on his shoulder. He put his shoes on and was about to leave.
When the Rajas heard about: “only the ones who can hold Guru ji’s chola can leave,” they were happy and came to Guru ji. They were very humble, pitiful and scary-looking. They had chains around their hands and feet. Guru ji saw them and said: “listen, everyone is to hold on to one of my pleats and walk out with me.” The Rajas quickly and anxiously came to Guru ji to grab his chola. Guru ji calmed them down and eventually arranged for everyone to hold one pleat each. The 50 held the 50 pleats in the back. The remaining 2 Rajas came to the front and folded their hands. They cried and said: “Guru ji, don’t leave us. Save us as well.” The officers hit them and said: “there’s nothing for you to hold now. There are only 50 pleats at the back. There are no more for you to grab.” It was a big crowd. The Rajas were squishing each other. The officers said: “looks like you two are destined to stay here. Don’t go near Guru ji now. Look how everyone is squished. Stay here.” The 2 Rajas shouted: “Guru ji, please save us! We have no other saviour other than you. Only you can save us from here. We are orphans. You are our master. Please take us with you.” Guru ji saw their pain and said out loud: “come here and grab my front 2 pleats which are used to tie my chola.” The Rajas were happy to hear this. They grabbed the front 2 peats.
Guru ji emptied the whole prison and proceeded forward to come out of the Qila. People of the city came to see this amazing spectacle. They watched the Bandhi Chhorr Paatshaah (the breaker of bonds) and the 52 kings come out of the Qila. The Rajas shouted out Jaikaras of Guru ji and said: “you are Dhan Guru ji! You are the most benevolent. Why wouldn’t anyone come to your sanctuary? You give life to the dead. You keep everyone alive. You gave us bliss and took our pains away.” Many people watched as Guru ji and the Rajas walked out of the main door of the Qila of Gwalior. Many people were standing with their hands folded outside the Qila. The people outside of the Qila watched this unprecedented event. Just as people of the 18 Hells were suffering and were released by Raja Janak; just as Rahu eclipses the moon and escapes it with great difficulty; the fairies of heaven were released by Krishan ji from the Daynts; this is how Guru Hargobind Sahib ji is illuminating today. The Rajas were being released by Guru ji. Just as Jarasandh captured many Rajas; Krishan ji had him killed and released the Rajas; just as Raavan captured Inder and other Devatas, Ram Chander ji had them released; just as Paras Nath captured all the kings, Machinder Nath had them released, that is how Guru Hargobind Sahib ji preformed this amazing task. He destroyed the pain of the Rajas.
The Rajas were in a horrible state. They had lice in their body and hair. Their hair had dreadlocks and were long and dirty. They were dry, due to no oil applied to them. Their clothes were old and ripped. They bodies were barely covered. The chains were really heavy. Who else could have destroyed their pain besides Guru Hargobind Sahib ji? Their countries were annexed. Their families were lost. They were living in the Qila where nobody could visit them. They had no hope of being released. The Satguru cuts the bounds of his Sikhs. He freed the Rajas.
Jahangir had won many lands and imprisoned the Rajas. There was no other Raja who could win Jahangir. His radiance was big, due to the blessing of Guru Nanak Dev ji. The Rajas in Gwalior had no hope. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji made them free. The Rajas were all squished as they came out surrounding Guru ji. Satguru ji was out now. This amazing event was watched by the universe. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the Devatas all watched with their hands folded. The Guru was Mukat and so was his Sangat. Thousands of people came to see, wanting the get to the front to see. They stood in long lines to see. They watched with their hands folded. They sang the praises of Guru ji along with the Rajas: “who else would have done this? You are benevolent. You are the Gareeb Nivaaj. You are benevolent.” Guru ji had his weapons and jewellery on his body. He was standing outside of the Qila with the Rajas. The blacksmiths were called by Guru ji. He commanded them to cut the chains of the Rajas. Guru ji made them free just as Guru ji washes the Karmic chains of his Sikhs. He showed everyone what happens to the ones that come to the sanctuary of the Guru. They were without bonds. They were in joy. They do not have bondage anymore. The jailor Bhai Haridas ji watched the greatness of Guru ji, he was really happy. He thought to himself: “I will stay with Guru ji. I will do his Seva and make my birth a success.” Guru ji looked at Bhai Haridas ji and understood his wishes. He gave him bliss and said: “take these Rajas and bring them with you to Delhi. Come separately from me because they will come slow. I have to go to Delhi quickly. The Badshah has been waiting for me for a long time. I have many tasks to do.” Guru ji started off towards Delhi after speaking to Bhai Haridas ji. He mounted his strong horse and travelled along with Bhai Vizier Khan ji.
Guru ji, Bhai Vizier Khan ji, Bhai Jetha ji and the other Sikhs were all happy. They all travelled in a line with the leader of the Sodhis. Guru ji’s weapons were illuminating. He looked like a great and powerful lion. Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “Santokh Singh is a sacrifice unto the great Satguru. It has been Guru ji’s blessing that the 4th Raas has been completed. Guru ji’s beautiful personality has been attempted to be illuminated in this Raas. Whoever reads or listens to it, their sins will be washed away.
Thus ends the 4th Raas.
