4-51 Camping at 2 Kos (6 km)
Satguru ji got up from his court and went to Mata ji’s home. He bowed to her and sat down close to her. He told her of the preparations to go to Delhi: “the decision has been made. I will leave in the morning to go to the Badshah. Baba Bhudda ji and Bhai Gurdas ji will take care of all the responsibilities of the Darbar. They will come to you and get all the tasks done. They are the wisest of all, in every way. The Seva of Harmandhir Sahib and Keertan will carry on. The Sangat will continue to come after I go. The duty of the Langar is the greatest of all. The offerings of money and gifts will be taken care of by the treasurer and the Masands. They will give the Siropas to the visiting Sikhs. Everything will carry on as usual.” Mata Ganga ji thought about her son leaving her. She got filled with love and began to miss him already. She said: “I haven’t been away from you since the time you were born. Not one day has gone by where you were not with me.” She began to shed tears and took deep breaths. She continued: “listen son, what can I say to you? You are on the Gurta Ghaddi and are omnipotent. You are the wisest. You know past, present and future. What can this unwise “Jeev” say to you? I still want to say to you that you should be on high alert. Don’t get caught in the enemy’s trap. They are big sinners and corrupt. They have no compassion, especially towards you. Some of them may be Hindus but their actions are that of Chandaals. Your father was omnipotent. Creating and destroying was in his hands. He was forgiving and calm. He didn’t punish any sinner. These sinners didn’t care about him and caused his martyrdom. He didn’t show any of his powers. He let go of his body when his time came. In the same way, you are going to see the Emperor as well. You are young and eager. I am a sacrifice unto you, many times. I am in pain without seeing you. You are my only support. Seeing you, I am in bliss. What will I do while you are gone? Only I will know. Till I don’t see you, I will be impatient. It seems as though some sin of mine has come forward where you are leaving me. I will wait for you all the time. That time will be an auspicious time when you come back. Come back quickly. Look in my direction and don’t forget me. Send me updates everyday. Be aware of everything and be on high alert. This separation between us is because of my Karma. Nobody can stop this.” Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji heard his mother and gave her hope: “don’t feel bad about this. Don’t worry. Guru ji will be with me. When I see that my work is done, I will come back. I will come back quickly. I will send you news everyday. Be happy. All the pain will be forgotten.” In this way, Guru ji spoke to his mother.
The news spread in the city and nearby villages of Guru ji going to Delhi. Many Sikhs prepared to go with Guru ji. The warriors packed their clothes, saddled their horses and gathered their weapons. The tents, clothes, food and beds were all loaded. Everything was accounted for and packed for the travel. The whole day was spent in getting ready. At night, everyone ate and slept.
At Amritvela, everyone bathed and got ready. Guru ji wore expensive clothes and fastened 2 swords, tied his Kumerkassa and strapped his small Shasters. The Nagara was sounded. The Nagara sounded like thunder. The warriors pulled the reins on their horses and got ready to ride. They came to Guru ji with their horses. Guru ji took a lot of Karah Prashaad and dry fruit; and went to Sri Harmandhir Sahib. He bowed inside and did an Ardaas for success while standing up. Observing the place of his father and grandfather; he did the Parkarma of the Harmandhir. He bowed after distributing the Prashaad. The Sangat took the Prashaad. Guru ji went to Mata Ganga ji and bowed to her. Mata ji stopped her tears and kept looking at her son’s face. She did an Ardaas: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and all 5 Gurus, please be with my son all the time. Destroy his obstacles. May only friends seek his company and the enemies be destroyed.” She kissed Guru ji’s forehead and hugged him. She couldn’t say anything as her throat swelled up due to her emotions. Her wisdom was entangled in her motherly love. Guru ji understood what his mother was going through and continuously gave her hope: “Mata ji, you are wise and highly intelligent. You are the one that gives hope to all. What can I say to you? Why are you filling your heart with pain? I will be back soon with joy. I will be with you then.” Mata ji, the fortunate one, spoke, looking at her handsome son: “son, the elders did a great effort and I got you with the blessings of Baba Bhudda ji. The enemy tried really hard to harm you. The Satguru protected you in every way. I have kept you under my watch this whole time. I couldn’t get enough of looking at you. I only have one son. I will be calm when I see you again.” Guru ji said: “Mata ji, when I get the chance, I will return. I will think of you and come back. Send me off with joy. Give me to Satguru ji. He will take care of me.” Guru ji bowed to his mother and came out of the house. His eyes were like lotus petals. His horse was decorated with gold and precious gems. It was a strong steed. Guru ji thought of Guru Nanak Dev ji and mounted his horse. The Nagaras sounded as soon as he mounted. The other warriors mounted their horses as well. The Nagaras and conches travelled ahead along with the Nishans. The wind gave great omens. People were happy to see the sight of Guru ji and his warriors going to Delhi. Guru ji’s right eye and bicep twitched. His right arm was the symbol of might. These were the signs of victory. The day was clear and nice. A woman carrying a pot of milk walked by. This was a good omen as well. A herd of deer travelled left. The birds sang beautiful songs. Nature was happy as the sinner who tortured Guru Arjan Dev ji was about to be killed. The earth was in pain since the time the great saint was given pain. The earth cannot tolerate any saint’s pain. It was time for revenge. The Nagara sounded and the Nishans waived. The warriors were behind Guru ji. Bhai Vizier Khan and Bhai Kinch Beg were behind Guru ji. The warriors, who were practitioners of Shaster Vidya, made their horses dance as they rode.
After 2 Kos (6 km), the camp was set. Guru ji got off his horse and sat in a muslin tent. It was covered with Pashmina and Zarri. The poles were made of silver. Golden domes adorned the tent top. The sides and canopy were tied with silk ropes. A big beautiful bed was laid out with an expensive sheet. The fasteners were made of silk and Zarri. A beautiful soft pillow was placed on it. Guru Bhagwan ji sat on the bed. Saying his name, Jumms would leave, out of fear. Carpets and rugs were laid out. The Sangat sat there with bliss. Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Gurdas ji and the Masands came to this point to see off Guru ji. Bhai Jetha ji, Bhai Langha ji and Bhai Pirana ji were with Guru ji. Many other Sikhs came as well. The Sangat of Amritsar came to see Guru ji. All of the men and women came with food and money. They met Guru ji and bowed. The warriors came and did a Divaan. The Rababis sang Gurbani with the great Raags. The Chaurs were being waived over Guru ji’s head. The Mevra did Ardaas for the Sangat. The Sooraj Mukhis were raised with Sikhs holding them. Chobdhaars held golden maces. A great crowd gathered. They all came to see Guru ji. Many men and women gathered. It was a Mela at the first camp. The Sangat praised Guru ji. Many went back home at night. Some stayed the night and decided to go back the next morning when Guru ji was going to leave: “we will earn Karma for staying the night,” they said.
In the morning, Guru ji met everyone. He casted his divine vision on all and blessed them. He made all their pains go away. Guru ji spoke to them with joy and gave them respect. He had discussions with the people of Amritsar. He gave them hope and told them that he was always going to be with them. Everyone ate. There were guards everywhere who kept watch and noticed friend from foe. The warriors were on alert and did Simran of Guru Bhagwan ji.
4-52 Guru ji Arrives in Delhi
Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji woke up and bathed. He wore his clothes and weapons. He was ready and the Nagara was sounded. The warriors were ready. Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Gurdas ji and the other Masands came to bow to Guru ji and sat down near him. Guru ji spoke: “Baba Bhudda Sahib ji and Bhai Gurdas ji, you are very wise. You are to stay in Amritsar and take care of the Seva of Harmandhir Sahib ji. Do the Pooja of Guru ji. Just as the Sangat came before, keep all the traditions as the same. Just as the Langar was, continue that and other tasks of the Guru’s home. Some warriors will stay with you. The Sevadaars will follow you. Keep Mata ji happy. Give her only good news about me. Take her advice and commands on everything. Be on alert for everything.” Guru ji gave Baba Bhudda ji all of the authority. Guru ji mounted his horse and wanted to head to Delhi. He looked at the Sangat of Amritsar and blessed them. He gave everyone their instructions. He headed towards Delhi with Bhai Vizier Khan and Kinch Beg. The Nagara sounded. The Bhatts and Naqeebs sang Guru ji’s praises. The path that the master of the world took, the people would hear and come to bow to Guru ji. Some of the Sangat would walk with Guru ji. They would bring food and gifts on the way. They would do Pooja of Guru ji as he travelled through the villages. He would bless everyone he met on the way. He would camp at night. Wherever he would stay, the Sangat of the nearby villages would come to meet him. There would be a great crowd. The wishes of the Sangat would be fulfilled.
Guru ji would wake up in the morning and continue his travels. His warriors were with him and hunted on the way. Hawks and other hunting animals were with him. Guru ji would hunt the animals and bless their souls with Mukti. Those animals had good karma and were deserving of Mukti in this way, according to some past life they had. Guru ji would do many tasks on the way. He would meet many people on the way and bless them. Guru ji was around the area of Ambala and had a Baoli made there at the request of the local Sangat. He broke the ground on the way to Delhi and stayed there on his way back to Amritsar. He blessed the water so people would be cured by bathing there. Guru ji then went to Shahabad, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat and Sonipat. He visited many other places that are yet to be discovered. Vizier Khan’s soldiers travelled with Guru ji. There were many people with Guru ji. Vizier Khan would do Guru ji’s Seva on the way. He would make his soldiers do Guru ji’s Seva as well. He would discuss politics and Sikhi with Guru ji. He would keep Guru ji happy. The soldiers began to do Simran as well. They all went hunting together. They would do as Guru ji would want. Bhai Vizier Khan would respect Guru ji and sit close to him with love. Wherever the Sangat would come to do Pooja of Guru ji, the Sangat would be blessed; along with the place. The soldiers of Vizier Khan were Muslim. They were very impressed with Guru ji. They had devotion towards him as they did his Seva along the way. They no longer saw religion. They only saw the light of Allah in Guru ji. In this way, Guru ji travelled for many days, performing tasks along the way.
Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Gurdas ji and the Masands came back and met Mata Ganga ji. Mata ji was getting anxious, thinking about her son. She would stay quiet in solitude. She was waiting for her son. She would think about her husband and get worried. She would think about what the Emperor’s people did to Guru Arjan Dev ji. She would think: “the Emperor doesn’t know about the greatness of the Guru. The Khatri Chandoo is a big officer who is full of cheat and corruption. He is still causing problems and that’s why my son is going to Delhi.” She thought about this and was upset. Baba Bhudda ji folded his hands and said: “Mata ji, why are you upset? You son is the strong Prabhoo. He is omnipotent. He is not a normal son. He is Akaal Purakh. The task that he is gone for, he will complete it. He can create the universe or destroy it. He is all-powerful. Don’t think about what happened to the elder Guru ji. It was Guru Arjan Dev ji’s body’s time to go, that’s why he went. He gave his head and made Chandoo guilty on purpose. He then went to Sach Khand. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji will take his father’s revenge. He will meet the Emperor and kill the enemy. Don’t worry Mataji. You will meet your victorious son again. You will be happy again. You are still to see your grandsons. You will be in bliss. My words are true Mata ji.” In this way, Baba Bhudda ji gave hope to Mataji. Mata ji felt at ease after listening to Baba Bhudda ji. She would do Simran of Guru Nanak Dev ji all the time. She would distribute Karah Prashaad all the time. She recited a lot of Bani and got busy in the tasks of the Guru’s home. The Keertan, Langar and traditions were running smooth. Thousands came and did Pooja in the Harmandhir Sahib. Keertan was always done. The Sangat came to do their Ardaas. Their wishes were fulfilled. The traditions were carried on with Mataji’s supervision. Everyone came to her for approvals.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji had reached Panipat. He soon reached Delhi, thereafter. Guru ji asked Bhai Vizier Khan: “what is your advice to where we should camp? A lot of Sangat will come. I want everyone to stay in ease. The horses need to feed and drink water. We all need water. The warriors need to live free. The Sangat should be able to see me.” Vizier Khan said: “you live in the hearts of your Bhagats. Where the Satsang is; where Prabhoo’s glories are being sung, that is the best place to stay.” He was pointing towards the place of “Majnu ka Tilla.” Bhai Vizier Khan continued: “where the saints are doing Simran of the indestructible one, that is where you live. You live in the Harmandhir of Amritsar. You live where “Satogun” is. You live in the hearts of the lovers. The ones who accept the will of Kartar, you live in them. The ones that have discarded their ego and vices; you live in them. You live in the hearts that are pure and calm. The hearts that have the light of the Satguru, you live there. Your bed is the Seva the Sikhs do of the Sangat. The attention that is focused in Satnam Simran, that is the fragrance of your home. Prema Bhagti is the pleasant air, where you live. You should live where bliss is. There is a place called “Majnu ka Tilla.” That is a beautiful place for you to stay. It is close to the Yamuna. I have heard from the elders: Guru Nanak Dev ji sat there when he came to Delhi. He met Sant Majnu there. You should go there too. There is a lot of open space there. The Yamuna is there as a source of water. For Divaans, Keertan, and practice of Shastervidya, that place is best. First have a look and then stay there if you like. Otherwise we will find another place.” In this way, they all went to the place of Majnu.
Guru ji saw the place near Yamuna. The water was blue and pure. Seeing that place would fill one with bliss. The land was higher than the river. Guru ji loved the place. He dismounted his horse. The warriors dismounted their horses as well and sent up their tents. The horses were tied. The tents were tied with silk ropes. The posts were set. There was great craftmanship on the tents. The other Sikhs and warriors set up their tents as well. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji, Bhai Langha ji and other Sikhs were there. The horses were tied with two long ropes. Guru ji had his tent set up where he could keep an eye on the horses. Guru ji called Bhai Vizier Khan ji and said: “you should go to your home and meet your family. If you get a chance to meet the Badshah today, then meet him today. If you meet him tomorrow, that’s fine too. Inform him of my arrival.” Guru ji gave Bhai Vizier Khan ji a very expensive Siropa. Another Siropa was given to Bhai Kinch Beg ji. They tied the Siropas to their heads and bowed to Guru ji. They both stood up, folded their hands and said: “we are the servants of the Guru’s home. Everything we have, has been given to us by your grace.” They both took leave and praised Guru ji’s calm form on their way home. Guru ji washed his feet and wore soft clothes. Bhai Vizier Khan and Bhai Kinch Beg went to meet the Badshah first. They met the Badshah and informed him of Guru ji’s arrival into Delhi.
4-53 Giving Wisdom to the Saint of Majnu da Tilla
Bhai Vizier Khan and Kinch Beg got the chance to meet the Badshah. They bowed to him with respect. As they came close to the Emperor, Jahangir looked towards them and said: “Vizier Khan, welcome! How is the son of Guru Arjan Dev ji, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji? The one who sits on the Gurta Ghaddi, has he come? Tell me.” Vizier Khan folded his hands and spoke with cleverness in the court: “he is young but very wise. His body is huge, unlike any size I’ve seen before. He is the tallest and widest person in the world right now. He is very charming and handsome. He is the temple of powers. When we met him, we were amazed to see him. He has a towering personality. We told him everything you told us to say. He accepted our request. He mounted his horse and came with his Sikhs. He has camped at the place of Majnu.” The Emperor heard this and was very happy. He called Vizier Khan “Dhan.” He said: “many people spoke bad of the Guru and said that he was a rebel. It seems the Guru is not like what they say. Both of you are wise that you brought Guru ji. The other people told me that you will not be able to bring him. I was in doubt but you two proved to be wise. You brought the Guru to Delhi, that is great! He will save me from sin. I will do his Seva and make him happy. I wish to meet him tomorrow. His throne is the highest in the world.” The Emperor got up from his court and left.
Vizier Khan came back to Guru ji and told him what happened in the court. Bhai Vizier Khan said: “he wishes to meet you tomorrow.” It was evening. The Sangat of Delhi found out that Guru ji had arrived and so they came to meet him. Men and women; everyone was excited with Guru ji’s arrival. Everyone came with joy. The Masands of Delhi came with the Sangat. The Sangat came and bowed to Guru ji, bringing many gifts for him. The Rababis sang Shabads in Raags. The Divaan was in progress. Everyone listened to the Keertan. Thousands of people came for the Divaan at the shores of the Yamuna. Guru ji was tall and wide. He was handsome beyond anyone’s imagination. He was royal. He had weapons and a Kalgi on his Dastaar. The warriors had rifles, swords and spears. It was a splendid sight of confidence and power for everyone to see. They were amazed to see his radiance and royal appearance. It was the way of the kings. The other Gurus did not do this. They sat on Manjhis not Takhats. The lessons of Santokh and saintliness was important to come before the warriorism. The Dumaalaas and horses were making the Sikhs happy. They were being blessed by Guru ji’s Amrit-filled sight. The Mevra did the Ardaas of the people. Guru ji fulfilled everyone’s wishes. People couldn’t stop looking at him. Some sat and listened to the Keertan. Some stayed standing. They brought money and food for the Langar. They were all worshiping Guru ji like all the Devatas worshiping Vishnu. It was like the Devatas doing Pooja of their Guru, Brihaspati.
The elder Sikhs began to speak to Guru ji about Guru Arjan Dev ji: “he was calm and benevolent. He blessed thousands of Sikhs. The corrupt sinner made many schemes and filled Jahangir’s ears with poison. In the end, Chandoo took a grave sin on his head. The fool could not understand the greatness of the Guru.” The Sikhs began to shed tears as they spoke about Guru Arjan Dev ji and thought about his form. The great and powerful Satguru heard the Sikhs and spoke to them with patience: “see the Satguru as immortal. The Satguru does not die or go anywhere. He is always with his Sikhs. He is with you in both worlds. He saves you from many troubles. What he did was by his own will. Guru ji is free and does what he wishes. He is not under anyone’s power. Wherever you remember him, he will be with you. He completes the tasks of his Sikhs and gives them joy. Don’t worry about him in any way. Nobody can kill him. Do his Simran. He will be with you in the end.” In this way, Guru ji spoke to the Sikhs. It was evening and so the So Dar Chownki started. The Sikhs listened to the Chownki and went home at night. They talked about Guru ji’s charming form as they went home: “he is radiant and will grow. He will kill the enemy.”
The warriors ate and fed their horses at night. They all went to sleep after and did Simran of the Guru. There was a saint that lived at Majnu da Tilla. He wanted Guru ji to come and meet him there. He did Simran of Guru ji all the time and wanted to ask him questions. When Guru ji was alone at night, the Saint came to meet Guru ji. He was happy to see Guru ji. Guru ji gave him respect and had him sit close to him. The Saint bowed to Guru ji. He folded his hands and said to Guru ji: “please dispel my doubts. Is this world true or false? I have been thinking for a long time and haven’t been able to come to a decision. If I say this is true, then where are the people who have died? If this world is false, why do I see it? Some say it is true some say it is false. These two things are contradictory. Just as darkness and light cannot be together, true and false can’t be together. I can’t make this distinction.” Guru ji answered the saint: “when you go to sleep and watch your dreams, you see a world. You can see it but it isn’t true. That is how this world is. Till you are dreaming, that is only when you think it is true. In dreams, you can be scared and run; or you can be happy too. If one sees the dream as false, then why would one be happy or scared? You think it is true at that time. Nocturnal emissions are a prime example of proving perception versus reality. When one wakes, where does the dreamworld go? You can’t see it anymore. Everything is in Maya. For this reason, Maya can’t be classified as true or false. It is “unarvachni,” indescribable. Without the compassion of the Guru, one cannot understand this. It can’t be said if this world is true or false. This world is the work of Maya. Maya is “Agyaan,” the lack of Gyaan. The concept or perception of “not-knowing.” To not know the Aatma is Agyaan. The Aatma is the truth, which is not known to the Jeev. Within the Aatma, many perceptions are falsely made. I will give you an example of what the world is made of: in the darkness, a rope lying on the ground can not be distinguished from a snake. It is perceived as a snake due to the lack of clarity of one’s perception. The person runs away in fear. If it is not true, why does one run away? If it was true, the snake would not be destroyed (in the mind). That’s why it is unarvachni. The one who does not see the Brahm everywhere, that person is an Agyaani. If the snake is real, it can be killed with a weapon. The fake snake can only be destroyed with knowledge. This world cannot be distinguished by action, it can be deconstructed and its reality can be perceived only by the knowledge of the Guru. The Agyaan lives in the Brahm and has been there since forever. When the Agyaan was there, that was the reason for the creation of the universe. The Satguru is met with great Karma. The Satguru gives wisdom with compassion just like a person who explains to the Agyaani that: the rope is a rope and not a snake. This reality is actually Brahm; but instead we see the world. We think this world has statuses and milestones to achieve. The Guru makes us understand with confidence that this world is just a rope. The Guru lights a diva to dispel the darkness so we can see the rope. The one who sees the snake, they tremble in fear from the rope, thinking it’s a snake. The Guru gives wisdom and that is called “Brahmgyaan.” The world is seen as an illusion; just as the snake was an illusion. The Brahm is the rope which is only seen after Brahmgyaan. The Brahmgyaani sees the Brahm and is in bliss. The world does not exist; just as the son of a barren woman does not exist. The world looks real only because of the senses. It is the pleasure that binds the Jeev to the world. The energy of the Aatma is what gives all of the Indriyas their existence. That is what allows the senses to see the different colours of the world. The only reason why you can see the world is because it is there. Without an object’s existence, you wouldn’t perceive it as anything. It is us that develop the misconception of what it actually is. Till the object is not clearly seen, misconceptions exist. The truth is seen when the Gyaan comes. Misconceptions are destroyed. For this reason, Sant ji, see the one that is the support of the world, by which you see the world. When you see the Brahm, the delusion will be gone. You will see the uniqueness and beauty of everything. Everything is the One: Brahm. You will know that your Aatma is the Brahm; the Sat, Chetan and Anand. If you wish to analyse and describe Maya, you will not find its end or understand what it is. Nobody found the end of Maya. Millions of Yugas can pass but the end cannot be seen. It will seem further from your grasp. Maya has unlimited power. The wise people got tired and lost. They couldn’t find its end. The best thing to do is to connect with the One Aatma. That is the Saint, Bhagat and Gyani that is the “Tatt veta,” the one that knows the Brahm. They are “Dhan,” they are great, who took advantage of their lives. They know that the One is the ever-existing one. The rest is deemed to be destroyed. The other people who do not understand or try to understand the Brahm, they will continue being born and die; experiencing joy and sorrow; loss and profit. They will continue to look for the false.” When the Saint heard the words of the Satguru, he understood that the Satguru was the Avatar of Akaal Purakh. He was blessed by the vision of the Guru. He understood the greatness of the Guru. He said: “you are Dhan, you are great. Your words are great.” He bowed to Guru ji and said: “my doubts have been dispelled. My mind is cleared. I have received the Brahmgyaan. My mind is at peace.” The saint went back to his home and thought about what Guru ji said. He did Simran. This discussion went up to Midnight. Guru ji was alone with the saint, speaking to him. Satguru Hargobind ji then went to sleep on his bed. The Sikhs kept guard in all directions.
4-54 Meeting Jahangir
Guru ji woke up at 2:30 am and bathed. He sat down in Samadhi and connected with his real form, the Aatma. The Rababis had began singing the Asa Vaar in Raags and Raagnis. Many Sikhs came to listen to the Keertan. The ones who had Asa Di Vaar memorized, they sang along. Everyone present in Guru ji’s camp did Simran of Satnam. Amrit was showering everywhere. As the sun came up, Satguru ji’s Bani was recited till then. They listened to and recited Gurbani with love. When it was morning, the warriors got ready and came to Guru ji’s court. Where Guru ji’s tent was, the warriors stood outside it. Guru Hargobind ji was more beautiful and purer than the moon. His eyes were still closed. They opened to the light of the sun. He got dressed with fine and expensive clothes. His Chola had many pleats in them. He tied a colourful Dastaar on his head. His Dastaar had a royal radiance. The Jigha on his Dastaar had many gems and precious stones on them. He had a Kalgi on the top with pearl strands hanging from it. On his arms, he tied armlets with 9 precious stones on them. His necklace had diamonds had other gems in them. Rugs and tarps were laid out where his court was to take place. Guru ji came out of his tent and went to the court. The Sikhs got up when Guru ji came. They all did Darshan of Guru ji, who was the treasure of virtues. His seat had gold-work on it with muslin sheets. Guru ji sat on it and held Divaan. Chobdhaars stood with silver maces. The warriors stood around with many weapons. The Masands and Sikhs came and bowed to Guru ji. The Mevra did Ardaas of all the Sikhs. The people of Delhi came to meet Guru ji, bringing Karah Prashaad. The ones that had their Ardaas fulfilled, they brought gifts and money for Guru ji as per their promises. The lines to meet Guru ji were really long. There were a lot of people who came to meet Guru ji with love. The Sikhs said: “others travel many miles to visit Guru ji. We are fortunate that Guru ji has come to our city. Only the unfortunate ones did not come to see him.” They spoke to each other in this way. The people bathed and wore expensive clothes to see him. They brought Karah Prashaad along with them. Sikhs from other nearby villages came as well. All of the Sikhs had their Ardaas read out. The Karah Prashaad was distributed to everyone. Many men and women came. It was a great celebration as they came to see Guru ji. They were in bliss after seeing him. Crowds gathered. There was no place open. People from every direction came. They sat wherever they found a place.
Bhai Vizier Khan ji came to see Guru ji. He bowed his head to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji had him sit close to him with respect. He saw Guru ji’s appearance and was really happy. He folded his hands and made a request: “Guru ji, the Emperor is remembering you. He wishes to see you. He heard of your glories and wants to see you. He talks about you constantly. He was asking about you with joy. Please be gracious and give him your Darshan. Give peace to the friends and destroy the enemies.” Guru ji heard this and spoke to Vizier Khan: “the Sangat has all come now. They came with faith and devotion. They are in joy now. Their wishes are being completed. They will receive Karah Prashaad and take it to their families. Their families’ lives and their own are being successful. They love me a lot. How can I leave them and go to see the Emperor? When their wishes are completed and they go home, then I will come to see the Badshah. I will meet him with joy.” Bhai Vizier Khan heard this and said: “I am your Sikh servant as well. Please give me Prashaad so I can be in joy. I want my life to be a success as well. Please give me some for the Badshah as well. I will send it to him in his palace.” Guru ji had two trays full of Karah Prashaad brought out for Bhai Vizier Khan, which were delicious. Guru ji said to him: “keep one for your home and give the second tray to the Badshah.” Bhai Vizier Khan bowed and left with the trays of Prashaad.
Bhai Vizier Khan took one tray of Prashaad and had it sent to his home. The other tray he took himself to the Badshah’s home. He wanted to take it while it was still hot. He was free to pass all the gates. He went through all the doors and reached Jahangir’s home. Jahangir had just taken a bath in his hammam and came out. As soon he came out of his hammam, he felt hungry. It was winter and so he wished to eat something warm. At the same time, Bhai Vizier Khan had arrived with the Karah Prashaad. He saw Vizier Khan and said: “welcome! What have you brought? You didn’t bring Guru ji with you?” Bhai Vizier Khan folded his hands and said: “Guru ji has blessed you with Karah Prashaad. He is getting ready to come to you. Firstly, you should eat this Prashaad.” The Emperor was hungry so he signaled to bring it to him. He took some Prashaad and put it in his mouth. It was a different taste. He never had anything like it before. It was delicious. He was filled with joy. He said: “Guru Nanak Dev ji is Dhan.” The Prashaad was made with the purest ingredients. It had the power of the Guru in it. Jahangir was really hungry as well. That is why he felt so great after eating it. He took another portion and ate it. He ate it with great joy. The Badshah jokingly said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji seems to have thought about the seniors. I heard he had a long life as well that he made Prashaad fit for seniors to eat. You can eat this without chewing with your teeth. The taste is uniform in it. I have never eaten anything so delicious in my life before. I have eaten a lot of luxurious foods but nothing is tastier than this.” Bhai Vizier Khan said: “the Gurbani makes it delicious. It takes away all of the pain. I had the Jalodhar illness in my stomach. My pain went away by listening to Gurbani. I have come to know about the power of Gurbani since then. Guru ji is a very strong and tall person. Once you see him, you can’t stop looking at him. He is handsome, calm and full of joy. His beard is just coming in. His eyes are big and full of blessings. When he blesses someone, they become great. When he speaks, it seems as though flowers are showering from his mouth. If you follow him, he will bless you.” As Vizier Khan spoke, the Badshah ate all of the Prashaad. The Badshah then got up to go to his court. After hearing of Guru ji’s glories, the Badshah said to Vizier Khan: “mount your horse and go to Guru ji. Bring Guru ji to me. I want to meet him. I want to visit the giver of joy.” Vizier Khan was happy to hear this and quickly went to his horse. He mounted it and headed back to Guru ji’s camp at Majnu Da Tilla.
Bhai Vizier Khan rode his horse to Majnu Da Tilla and met Guru ji. He bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji said: “oh great! I was ready to go with you. Now that you are here, we can go.” Guru ji mounted his horse. Bhai Jetha ji and 4 other Sikhs went with Guru ji. Satguru ji, the master of the universe, along with 5 Sikhs went to Jahangir’s palace. Guru ji’s horse was really strong and wanted to race ahead. Guru ji would slow it down and make it jump less. The horse was angry, seeing the wind pass it. It wanted to race with the wind and go faster. It kept rolling its feet in anger. Guru ji kept the horse in his control. When the horse’s shoes touched the ground, it made a loud noise. Whoever saw Guru ji on the way, bowed to him. They would lose their ego by gaining patience. Guru ji’s form was the giver of joy. His charm was attractive to all. They had never seen such charm and radiance before. They had never seen such a strong body before. One could not take their eyes off of Guru ji. Some people knew it was Guru ji but some didn’t know who he was. They asked others: “which county’s Emperor is he? Wherever he lives, the people are probably very fortunate.” The Sikhs would say: “he is the king of kings.” Guru ji arrived at Jahangir’s palace. Guru ji was the form of patience.
The Badshah had a sandalwood seat set up, equal to his own. He had fine cloths laid on the seat. As Guru ji came off his horse, the Badshah sent 2 Umraavs to receive Guru ji. They bowed to Guru ji and took him to the court. The Umraavs took Guru ji to the Badshah, who was sitting in his court. Guru ji sat on the seat that was set for him. The Emperor got up and went to bow to Guru ji with respect. He saw Guru ji’s form and was impressed. It was like the Warrior spirit had taken on a human form. Guru ji’s radiance was illuminating. His heart was deep. Seeing the weapons and royal regalia, the Emperor noticed this and thought to himself: “this Ghaddi was of saints. The Gurus before him were Saint Fakirs. Looking at the new Guru, it can be seen that he has started a new ideology. He is different from the past Gurus. His clothes and appearance are different from the other Gurus. I wonder if he’s the same from the inside. If he has taken on this appearance to rule kingdoms, just as Hindus and Turks want control of the kingdom, then he has ruined the traditions of the elder Gurus. He won’t be praised like the other Gurus then. If he still has the ideology of a saint though, then it doesn’t matter. The glory will remain the same. I will ask him questions to figure out his ideology.” In this way the Emperor thought and said to Guru ji: “Listen Peer ji, there are two ideologies: Hindu and Turk. Ram, Khuddah, Kirpal, Kareem, Allah, Akaal, Anant and Raheem are the names of Khuddah. Their traditions are different too. They all call themselves better than the other. Who is better out of the two? Who will be free of the bonds of the world?” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “I see the creator of both as One. All are made of the 5 Prime elements. They all have the same bodies with the same Indriyas, the senses. Whoever does the Simran of the Parmeshwar creator, that person is the greater of the two. Bhagat Kabeer ji has explained this and destroyed the doubt:
Prabhati Sri Kabeer ji..
Firstly, Allah created the Noor, the conscious power Maya, from Maya came nature which created the people..
From the One light everything was created; then who is good and bad?.1..
Oh people, don’t be in doubt and forget this..
The creation is in the Creator and the Creator is in the creation; the Creator exists in every bit of the creation.. Rahao..
The clay is the same but fashioned in various ways..
There is no fault in the clay nor is their any fault in the potter..2..
The One is the true amidst all; His will is the main cause of all effects..
Whoever realises the One, realized His will, that person knows the One and is His slave..3..
Allah cannot be characterized, the Guru has blessed me with the sweet Gurrh of Gyaan..
Says Kabeer, my doubts have been removed and now I see the One everywhere..4..3..
(SGGS 1349)
The outside form is made in the same way. The One Brahm lives inside. Whoever wants to be blessed, they should let go of their ego and do Simran of Bhagavan. Human life is a precious gem of a gift. It is rare and hard to get. Vices, pleasures, bonds, and ego spoil the life. It is like throwing away this expensive life for cheap. If one does Simran of Satnam, that person will take advantage of their life and go to their real home. The one who loses their doubts, they don’t see Hindu or Turk. They see the complete One in all. Just as space exists everywhere, that is how Parmeshwar is. The consciousness is everywhere. Their energy source is the same. The power Akaal Purakh keeps lifeforms alive. The power exists equally in all. The ones who are attached to their bodies and keep their egos alive, they keep insisting that they are better. They are not happy here, nor are they happy in the world hereafter. They are away from Parmeshwar. The ones who are not proud of their bodies, they don’t insist on being the greatest. They see their real form, the Aatma. They are in bliss then. They become beloved to the master. Nobody knows how to escape from this. They keep insisting on being better than the other. They get caught in bonds. This bond must be broken to be One with the Parmeshwar. Listen Badshah, know this correctly, let go of your ego. That is when your pain will be gone. You will have to do this as well. When the pride of your body is gone, one does not wish to call themselves greater.” The Badshah heard this and thought to himself: “he is still the same from the inside. Only his outer appearance is different. He is like the other Gurus. He has the same ideology in his heart.” He said to Guru ji: “you are Dhan Peer ji. I have faith that you indeed are the same form of Guru Nanak Dev ji; whose praises and glories are spread everywhere like the moon. Hindus and Muslims praise him.” The Badshah placed 1,000 Rajitpuns at Guru ji’s feet with devotion. Bhai Jetha ji picked up and kept the money. Everyone was happy with this meeting.
4-55 Hunting with Jahangir/ Killing the Lion
The Badshah said to Guru ji: “Peer ji, please spread your joy and regard every place as your own. It is my wish that you give me your Darshan during the day.” Guru ji left from the court with his Sikhs as the court was dismissed for the day. Satguru ji came to his camp. People were bowing to him from every direction. Guru ji laid down on his bed and rested for about 2 hours. After his rest, Guru ji got up and mounted his horse to go see the dark-watered Yamuna. Guru ji rode near the shores of the Yamuna slowly and observed the flow of her waters. There was a place of solitude in the far-off distance where Guru ji got off his horse and cleaned his face, hands and feet. The Sikhs that were with Guru ji, folded their hands and asked him: “Guru ji, how were the discussions with the Emperor? This was the first time you met him. What did you talk about? Was it a pleasant talk? Did the sinner slanderer stay quiet?” Guru ji, spoke to his beloved Sikhs: “the Badshah does not have any ill intentions. He spoke respectfully and sweetly. He asked about the conflicts between Hindus and Turks. He asked me questions and I answered them. He was satisfied with my answers.” When the Sikhs heard that the Badshah was on good terms with Sikhs, they folded their hands and said: “the sinner Chandoo has done a grave sin and kept it hidden. The Badshah doesn’t know about it. Reveal his treachery and take revenge on him! He should be punished!” Satguru ji heard this and said what the Sikhs wanted to hear: “till I don’t take my father’s revenge, I will not sleep in peace. I don’t have any interest in eating delicious foods. We will catch Chandoo in a while and give him a horrible death. We won’t spare him. I will fulfill my oath. The sinner of the Guru’s home will not survive.” In this way Guru ji spoke to the Sikhs and thought about killing Chandoo. He mounted his horse and came back to his camp.
Guru ji ate and slept the night. Whenever the Emperor would remember Guru ji, he would call Guru ji to his home. They would go hunting sometimes. They would go to far off lakes and set up camp. They would both take their own hunting parties. The Emperor knew that Guru ji loved to go hunting. One day, on a hunt, they took the hawks and other supporting animals like dogs and cheetahs to a dangerous jungle. The Mirshikars lead the hunt. The supporting animals were in cages on carts. The cheetahs were only released once deep in the jungle. When the cheetahs were released in the jungle, the deer got scared and began to run. The hawks preyed upon the rabbits. The Emperor began to shoot and killed many animals. Some were killed with arrows and swords. Guru ji killed many animals with great skill. He did not let any animal go that came in front of him. The Badshah was impressed at how skilled Guru ji was. The Emperor realized that he himself was never as good as Guru ji in any time of his life. He noticed how great of a warrior and marksman Guru ji was. The Badshah was happy to see this. Jahangir had heard about a strong lion that roamed that part of the jungle, where they were. The Badshah commanded his party to go hunt the lion. The whole hunting party headed that way. The Emperor mounted an elephant to hunt the lion. They began to scrub the jungle. They made noise with the Nagaras and bullets. The lion woke up and came to the hunting party. He roared loud when he saw the hunters. The soldiers and hunters got scared as the lion’s roar shook the jungle. Nobody came close to him. The horses released their urine and feces in fear of the lion. The elephant did not want to go towards the lion. The Badshah’s elephant was forces to go further but it was scared. Jahangir yelled out to Guru ji, as he noticed that he was calm: “you should hunt this lion. Before he attacks anyone else, attack him.” Satguru ji dismounted his horse and took his sword. Guru ji took the shield of his back and held it in his hand. He headed towards the lion on foot. Guru ji said: “don’t shoot at the lion.” Everyone stopped shooting and started watching the duel about to take place. The lion was under a hut of branches. Guru ji headed towards the gathering of branches. It was like the warrior spirit had awaken from its sleep. Guru ji’s face was red. His shield was heavy. It weighed 25 Seers (about 31 kg) which he found light. Guru ji came close to the lion and yelled at the lion: “come out! Why have you lost your will to fight?” Guru ji looked at the lion into its eyes. The lion came out with a roar. He came out moving its tail. He shook his mane when he saw Guru ji. The lion was 14 feet from paw to tail. His teeth were very big. He jumped towards Guru ji. The onlookers were all surprised and thought to themselves: “Guru Hargobind Sahib ji will not survive this.” The Mirshikars said: “we have never seen such a lion before. Guru ji has gone right into its mouth.” Everyone backed off. They didn’t think of going close. The lion jumped and Guru ji continued looking into his eyes. Guru ji took his shield and jammed it into the lion’s paws and face. Guru ji pushed the lion back. In a split second, Guru ji swung his sword and sliced the lion clean through the belly. The lion was in two pieces. The top half was still on Guru ji’s shield which he threw to one side. The lion was killed with one strike. The officers came running towards Guru ji. The Badshah came towards Guru ji. The elephant was forced to go there. The Emperor saw the lion and was amazed at how strong the lion was. He was surprised and said: Dhan Guru Hargobind Sahib.” The Emperor looked at the lion and then at Guru ji. The soul of the lion came up. There was fog and a lot of light. The sky became red. The Emperor looked up and saw the soul of the lion. He said to Guru ji: “what is this? Who was this? Why is there such an illumination? This is the first time I’m seeing a soul come out.” Guru ji said: “his name was Kasim Beg. Ask him yourself who he was. He will tell you who he was in his last birth.” Jahangir yelled out: “Kasim Beg!” The soul stopped and said: “in my last birth I was a human. Now I was a lion and lived in the jungle. Your father, Akbar, I was his clan brother. One day your father wished to go and see Guru Amardas ji. I was with your father and got mad at him. I thought to myself: “why is he going to worship a Hindu?” I couldn’t say anything to the Emperor. I kept slandering the Guru. I wasn’t happy to see him. I didn’t bow to him. I talked bad about the Guru to my friends as I was a fundamentalistic person. I couldn’t take the Guru’s greatness. We had to stay at Goindwal. One night, I had a stomach ache as I had eaten under-cooked meat. I couldn’t digest it. As I was dying, I was thinking of the Guru and that I had eaten under-cooked meat. I died that night. Because I was thinking about the raw meat, I was born as a lion. Because I was thinking of the Guru, I was rewarded with being killed by the Guru. Guru Amardas ji came himself to kill me. He saved me from the world. Jahangir, you are fortunate to meet Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. Great Jogis and Tappis wish to see the Parmeshwar and don’t get to. You are meeting him as much as you wish to.” The soul of Kasim Beg went to Heaven. Jahangir was amazed to see this. The soul could not be seen anymore. Whoever heard this, they understood the glory of Guru ji. Jahangir knew that Guru ji was omnipotent, omniscient and the one who sat on Guru Nanak Dev ji’s throne: “he is strong and brave. He is full of powers. He gives joy to thousands of hearts. He killed a lion by hitting its face with a shield. He is big. His weapons are big too. Nobody is as great as him.”
They all came back to Delhi. The Emperor praised Guru ji. He respected everything he said. The Emperor bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji went back to Majnu Da Tilla and the Emperor went back to his palace. The Umraavs who saw the hunt, they were impressed with Guru ji: “he is strong and brave. Look how strong the lion was. He killed him.” Guru ji showed the Emperor his strength. Everyone came home and went to sleep.
