4-11 The Bharaat Reaches

After eating at night, everyone slept.  Sri Satguru Arjan Dev ji slept near Sri Hargobind ji.  At Amritvela, everyone got up and did Simran of Kartar.  The Raagis played the Rababs and Mridangs.  They did Keertan of Asa Vaar.  They sang in many Raags which gave joy to the Sikhs.  Some Sikhs bathed and got ready.  Everyone was eager to do Simran and praise Akaal Purakh.  “Great is the Satguru,” were the words on everyone’s lips.  Listening to the Satnam made everyone calm.  It made their minds still.  They spent the Amritvela reciting Bani.  When the sun came up, the instruments started to play.  Everyone got ready to move the Bharaat foreword.  Everyone got on top of their carts, camels, chariots and horses.  The instruments could be heard from afar.  Since it was the month of Maagh, it was cold.  As the sun came up, the weather got warmer.  The carts and chariots started to move.  The bells in the animals’ necks began to ring.  The dust would fly when the Bharaat travelled.  The camels had a lot of heavy luggage on their backs as well as in the carts attached to them.  On the way, the beggars would come to get donations.  They received a lot of money and gifts.  Everyone got the same amount.  Once they received money, they would receive so much that they never needed to beg again.  The money would be prosperous for them.  The villagers on the way would come to see Guru ji and sing his praises.  Whoever came to beg did not leave empty-handed.  It was raining money for them.  Guru Arjan Dev ji blessed everyone.  The Bharaat eventually reached Khadoor Sahib.  Baba Dhatu ji approached Guru Arjan Dev ji and said: “please set up camp here.  I will do the Seva of the Bharaat today from my home.  This is my Ardaas.  Goindwal Sahib is still far from here.  Everyone is too tired to go that far tonight.  Please camp here tonight.  These happy times don’t come around often. Please give me the opportunity to serve the Sangat and the Bharaat.”  When Guru Arjan Dev ji heard this, he did not want to refuse his request.  He saw the love in his heart and accepted the request.  Guru ji told the whole Bharaat to set up camp and visit Khadoor Sahib.  As soon as the Sangat heard this, they all got off their horses and chariots.  They set up camp and rested.  Guru Arjan Dev ji took Sri Hargobind ji to the resting place of Guru Angad Dev ji Maharaj as well as the place where he held Divaans.  Guru ji took 500 Rajitpuns along with plates of ladoos and sweets and presented them to the court of Guru Angad Dev ji.  Guru ji and Sri Hargobind ji bowed to the court of Guru Angad Dev ji.  Guru ji had the Mevra do the Ardaas with great humility, as they stood up with their hands folded.  Guru ji offered flowers and did parkarma of the Darbaar.  Incense was lit and essences were sprayed.  It was around 5 pm and Guru ji held Divaan inside the Darbaar of Guru Angad Dev ji.  So Dar Chownki was carried out in the Darbaar as well as the Aarti.  After the Ardaas of the Divaan, Guru Arjan Dev ji came to the place where his bed was set up.  Langar was prepared, under Baba Dhatu ji’s organization, for the whole Sangat.  He served the Sangat with his own hands.  The night was spent in peace.

The next day, everyone got up at Amritvela and attended Divaan after bathing and getting ready.  When the sun came up, the Bharaat started on its way again.  9 km away was Goindwal Sahib.  The Sangat got off and took a bath at the Baoli Sahib.  They all bowed to the place of Guru Amardas ji Maharaj.  Guru Arjan Dev ji bathed at Baoli Sahib with Sri Hargobind ji and then went to go see his Mammaji, Baba Mohan ji.  Baba Mohan ji was at the Chabarra Sahib.  Guru ji bowed to Baba Mohan ji with his hands folded.  Sri Hargobind ji bowed to Baba Mohan ji as well.  When Baba Mohan ji saw Sri Hargobind ji’s body, he was extremely happy and surprised.  He was happy to see how blessed the Sodhis were.  The child was radiant like the moon and an avatar of greatness that came into the family.  He took Sri Hargobind ji in his lap.  Love was filled in his heart seeing him.  Was there such a person who could not be filled with love seeing Sri Hargobind ji?  He was such an impressive looking child, destined for greatness.  Baba Mohan ji asked about the Granth Sahib ji.  Guru Arjan Dev ji said: “this was your great blessing.  The people of Kaliyuga are not wise.  They will connect with Guru Granth Sahib ji and reach Brahmgyaan.  You have done a great blessing.”  Baba Mohan ji said: “my father said to me: “I don’t have a writer.”  He saw my son Sansram ji.  I said to Pithaji: “please teach him how to write.”  Pitha ji taught him and then he started to write the Bani.  He wrote the Bani of all the Gurus.  Pithaji spoke and checked all the Pothis and had Sansram ji write it.  He had prepared the Pothi of all the Bani that had been uttered.  So, it was my Pithaji’s blessing that the Bani was collected.  This was his graciousness.  When Pithaji went to Sach Khand, Sansram ji kept the Pothis.  When you came to me to get the Pothis, I called Sansram ji to get the Pothis.  They were yours to begin with and so I had them given back to you.”  Gur Arjan Dev ji said: “come with us for the wedding.  It is your servants who are going for the marriage.  You are our elder and we are under your protection.  Please make all the troubles and pains go away.”  Baba Mohan ji said: “my whole family is already going with you.  I am always with you.  I don’t like crowds.  I like to stay in solitude.”  When Guru ji heard this, he bowed to his Mammaji and got up.

In this way, the Bharaat passed the Beas as the instruments played.  Guru ji and Sri Hargobind ji crossed the river and reached Sultanpur Sahib (the place where Guru Nanak Dev ji weighed 13 Tera).  Whoever comes to beg here gets everything they want.  The whole Bharaat camped in this place.  The horses were tied up wherever a suitable place was found.  Guru Arjan Dev ji took Sri Hargobind ji and went to the shore of Vaee River, Ber Sahib, where Guru Nanak Dev ji did Tapasya.  Where Guru Nanak Dev ji did the Daattan (cleaned his teeth) the Daattan had become a Ber tree.  They bowed to that place and then went to Hutt Sahib where Guru Nanak Dev ji worked at the Modi Khanna.  The Sangat went with Guru ji and then Guru Arjan Dev ji spoke about the history of Guru Nanak Dev ji: “from this place, Sant Ghatt Sahib, Guru ji appeared after 3 days, after disappearing into the Vaee River.  Guru ji then distributed the whole stock of the shop.  Guru ji then went on his Udaasis from this place.  He preached Sikhi in many places.  The darkness of Kaliyuga was ferocious.  Guru Nanak Dev ji lit Gyaan Divas everywhere.”  In this way, Guru ji visited all the places and enlightened the Sangat of the history of the place.  Guru ji came to the place of Gurduara Sera Sahib (in modern times, known as) and rested.  He ate and rested in that place.  Everyone rested the night and woke up at Amritvela.  They all bathed and got ready.  The Bharaat was ready.  They all said: “the Bharaat will reach the destination today so wear your best clothes.”  The instruments sounded and it was a joyous time.

They reached Dalla village and then got off their carts and horses.  They sent news to Baba Narayan Das ji that the Bharaat had arrived.  When Baba Narayan Das ji heard this, he prepared the sweets and food on carts to take to the Bharaat.  He got on his chariot and went to receive the Bharaat.  He met Guru Arjan Dev ji.  The Nagaras sounded as he came to meet.  The Nishans unfurled.  The Nishans shined because of the Zarri.  The two sides met each other.  It was like clouds coming together, thundering.  The chariots rode on ahead to meet each other.  It was like two rivers of happiness meeting and coming together.  Baba Narayan Das ji presented the sweets and bowed to Guru Arjan Dev ji.  He said: “we are small and you are high.  We are you servants.  You gave us a lot of respect.  You completed our wishes by coming to our village.”  Guru ji had all the sweets and food distributed to the Sangat.  Guru ji wanted the official Milni to happen and so he called his brother, Baba Mahadev ji.  He gave Baba Mahadev ji all of the money.  Bhai Gurdas ji and Baba Bhudda ji along with Baba Krishan Chand ji and other Sikhs distributed the money.  It was raining money for the poor.  The Bharaat went inside the village.  The people of the village met the Sangat.  The instruments sounded.  The dust flew as the Bharaat came in.  The money was showered.  People watched the Bharaat from their balconies and rooftops.  They said: “what a beautiful Bharaat!  It is so big!”

The Bharaat settled and camped, seeing a nice place.  The tents that Guru ji had called for were set up.  They were very royal-looking tents.  A canopy was set with silk ropes.  Colourful borders could be seen.  Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji and Sri Hargobind ji sat on a seat.  It was like Inder sitting, wearing beautiful clothes.

4-12 The Bharaat

To do the Milni with Guru Arjan Dev ji, Baba Narayan Das ji came with all the gifts.  Horses with Zarri saddles were given to Guru ji.  They had silk tassels on the saddle linings.  The horses were very clever.  They wouldn’t let their hooves touch the ground.  Shawls were brought made of fine cloths.  Golden coins were placed on top of the clothes.  The whole family and villagers were with Baba Narayan Das ji.  His whole clan was with him.  He stood in front of Guru Arjan Dev ji.  He wanted to bow to Guru ji instead of hugging him.  The Purohit spoke up: “go and hug Guru ji with your arms out.  You are “Samdhis” now, which means you are equals.  Even if it is king or a pauper, Samdhis are equal.  This is the worldly and Vedic tradition.  This is what happens in the wedding.  Don’t be shy. Go and meet your Samdhi.”  Baba Narayan Das ji said: “Pandit ji, how can this be?  We can’t be equals.  He is the master of the universe.  He is my Guru.  He is omniscient and omnipotent of all 3 worlds.  I am the servant of his servant’s servants.  If I try to be his equal, it will be a joke.”  Baba Narayan Das ji put the gifts in front of Guru ji.  He put his head on Guru ji’s feet and laid on the ground.  Guru ji saw Baba Narayan Das ji’s love and picked up him.  He hugged him and blessed Baba Narayan ji.  Guru ji observed the traditions and gave respect to his Samdhi.  The Sikhs watching this amazing spectacle saw this and began to shed tears.  They all said: “great is Narayan Das!  He respected Guru ji in the correct way.  He is blessed to be hugged by Guru ji.  No one is more fortunate than him.”  After the Milni, Baba Narayan Das ji went to his home with his relatives.  Guru ji went to the Junjvaas (place of stay for the Bharaat) that was set up for the whole Bharaat.

The time of the Laavan was upon them.  The auspicious time of the “Dhenu Dhool” came.  The Brahmins had asked for everyone to come to the place of the wedding.  Baba Narayan Das ji sent a messenger for Guru ji to come for the wedding: “we have prepared for the wedding ceremony.  Please bring Sri Hargobind ji for the Laavan.”  When the news came into the Junjvaas, the instruments began to play.  The dhundhabs and Shehnais played.  The Nagaras played along with the Napheeryas.  Flutes played and Dhols were sounded.  Everyone got up to go.  The groom, Sri Hargobind ji, looked great.  The son of the Guru was really handsome.  Baba Mahadev ji, Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Umar Shah ji, Bhai Salo ji and other Sikhs were taken along to go to the place of Laavan.  Guru Arjan Dev ji lead the way.  The instruments played as they walked.  The Naqeebs and Bhatts sang the praises of the Guru.  Sri Hargobind ji had a canopy over his head.  A Chaur was waived over Guru Arjan Dev ji’s head.  The women of the village wanted to see the groom.  Women got on top of their roofs and balconies when they heard the instruments.  They anxiously hurried to the rooftops.  They all left their household chores as they came.  Some women accidentally put their waist jewellery in their necks and rubbed surma on to their cheeks instead of into their eyes in a hurry.  They tied their necklaces around their waist.  They wanted to see the handsome groom.  They stared at the groom.  Fireworks were done and instruments played.  The fireworks looked like stars falling.  There was a lot of light.  Some fireworks made pictures of horses and animals in the sky.  People could see the horses of fire running around.  Some fireworks were like blankets.  People would be happy seeing this.  They would see Devatas and Demons made by the fireworks.  Everyone enjoyed this spectacle of fire.  The Sangat sang Shabads.  The torches were lit and made the night look like day.  The streets of Dhalla were bright.  The torches were bright like the sun, but without the extreme illumination.  The torches were there, but the illumination was actually coming from the radiance of Guru Arjan Dev ji and Sri Hargobind ji.  Everyone was amazed to see the great celebration.  They had never seen such an illumination before.  Sri Hargobind ji looked like the moon amongst the stars.  Women looked upon from their balconies.  They would fold their hands and bow to Parmeshwar, as he walked forward.  The Bharaat moved slowly towards Baba Narayan Das ji’s home.  Baba Narayan Das ji was the grandson of Bhai Paro ji Brahmgyaani.  Sri Hargobind ji was mounted on a horse.  When the reached the home, Baba Narayan Das ji came to receive them.  He took everyone inside and to the place of the wedding ceremony.  Many people were standing as Guru Arjan Dev ji walked in with the groom.  Anyone sitting then stood up as well.  Baba Narayan Das ji had Guru ji and the Bharaat sit down in special seats.  They sat around the Bedi of the Laavan.  The Pandits did the pooja of the Navgrehs and Ganesh.  The fire of the Bedi was burning.  Samaghri was placed into the fire and the Pooja carried on.  The bride had entered and was seated next to the groom.  All of the traditions were carried out.  The Laavan were done as Baba Narayan Das ji gave his daughter’s hand, Mata Damodri ji, to Sri Hargobind ji’s.  The Devatas and Devis came in human form to see the wedding.  They were very beautiful.  The Devis in human form sang songs of joy.  Satguru ji was happy to see them.  They were taking in the blessing from Guru ji and showing him their skills.  Seeing Guru ji gave them bliss.  The women of the family Baba Narayan Das ji did not know who those women were but they received them with great respect.  There was a great crowd in the house.  The wives of the Devatas did Seva in the house and earned great rewards.  Guru Arjan Dev ji was very happy and gave money to everyone.  The Pandits were happy and sang the praises of Guru ji.

The Gotrachaar (family lineages) was announced.  The Purohit speaking about the family was given money.  The wedding ceremony was done.  Everyone got up.  The Bharaat went back to the Junjvaas.  Sri Satguru ji went.  Fireworks were lit.  It was night time and a lot of torches were lit.  The Bharaat came back playing instruments.  Baba Narayan Das ji invited everyone to a feast.  The whole Bharaat came to eat food.  Fireworks were lit.  The night looked like day.  Everyone came inside the home and were seated in lines.  The family and relatives of Baba Narayan Das ji were standing with hands folded.  A beautiful stool was set for Guru Arjan Dev ji.  He sat down.  His hands were washed and then the plates full of sweets and food were placed.  Ladoos, ghee and other foods were placed.  Amritees, dry fruit sweets and different delicacies were placed.  The whole Bharaat then received and ate the delicious food.

The women came and began to speak jokes and sing songs of joy.  They would make jokes about the Bharaat, making them all laugh as they ate.  The beautiful women sang songs of joy and entertained the Bharaat.  Everyone was enjoying themselves.  Both sides of the wedding parties enjoyed themselves.  Bliss was raining in the wedding. Everyone ate and then got up.  Guru Arjan Dev ji washed his hands and placed money into the plates for the people who were going to wash the dishes.  Everyone then went back to the Junjvaas and went to sleep.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the wedding.

4-13 The Bharaat Part 2

The night was spent in peace.  At Amritvela, Asa Vaar was sung in various Raags by the Rababis.  Guru ji woke up at 2 am and bathed.  He sat down in his room to go into his Samadhi.  He connected with his real form and focused his mind into the Samadhi.  When the sun came up, everyone else got up and bathed.  The instruments sounded and Sri Hargobind ji got ready after bathing.  He wore beautiful clothes and headed towards the Divaan where Satguru ji and the Sikhs were in attendance.  The Masands and other senior Sikhs were present with Guru ji.  The rich Sikhs had arrived as well.  Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Salo ji, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Kalyaan ji and other Sikhs were sitting near Guru Arjan Dev ji.  Baba Mahadev ji, Guru ji’s elder brother, was there.  Guru ji would discuss all the tasks with his brother.  Dallay Graam was a village full of Sikhs.  There were 72 Brahmgyaanis in this village during Guru Amardas ji’s time.  The Sikhs gathered and brought Guru ji their Dasvands and gifts.  Many Sikhs, who were Sikhs from birth, came to see Guru ji.  Some of the Sikhs were elderly and had served Guru Angad Dev ji and Guru Amardas ji.  They came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet, placing their gifts in front.  They had great faith and devotion towards Guru ji.  They were wise Sikhs who had received wisdom from the elder Gurus.  Guru ji had the Sikhs from Guru Angad Dev ji’s and Guru Amardas ji’s time sit close to him.  Guru Arjan Dev ji asked those Sikhs: “you have been Sikhs for a long time.  Who of you were beloved to the elder Gurus?”  The Sikhs folded their hands and said: “oh master of the world, please bless us.  We will tell you as per your command.  In this village, there are many Sikhs who were blessed.  Bhai Lalo ji and Bhai Dheera ji were very close to Guru Amardas ji.  You have blessed Bhai Behlo ji with the hidden powers.  Bhai Lalo ji had those powers during Guru Amardas ji.  There have been many great Sikhs in our village.  It is hard to name them all.  Bhai Paro ji was beloved to Guru Amardas ji.  Guru ji was really happy with him.  Bhai Paro ji obeyed the will of Satguru ji.  His Brahmgyaan was deep and his mind was always focused.  Guru Amardas ji was going to give Bhai Paro ji the Gurta Ghaddi.  Bhai Paro ji folded his hands and requested Guru ji to give him the Sikhi of the Guru’s feet instead.  He said: “I am your servant and I can only do Seva.  You are the Guru.”  Guru Amardas ji heard this and said: “Bhai Paro, if this is what you wish, then let go of your body and come into my form.  Become one with me.”  Bhai Paro ji obeyed and came back to Dallay Graam.  He let go of his body and entered the form of Guru Amardas ji.  Bhai Paro ji sent his horse to Guru Amardas ji before he left his body.  Nobody else could ride that horse besides the Guru.  Guru Amardas ji gave that horse to Guru Ramdas ji.  Guru Amardas ji rode that horse during his time.  When Guru Ramdas ji went to Amritsar for the first, he rode that horse.  Bhai Narayan Das ji, your new relative, is from Bhai Paro ji’s family.  Bhai Narayan Das ji’s daughter is your daughter-in-law now.  We have a request for you: it would be great if you accept our request.  Please establish a place of remembrance here, marking your visit.  People can visit the place and bow there.”  Guru Arjan Dev ji heard this and was happy to see the Sikhs’ faith.  He knew the Sikhs wanted other Sikhs to be successful.  Guru ji said: “I will complete your request in the evening.”  The thousands of Sikhs heard Guru ji speak.  The Sikhs bowed and went to their homes.

Many beggars from other villages came, hearing about the wedding of Guru ji’s son.  Whoever came to Guru ji and asked for things, Guru ji fulfilled their wishes.  The Taadis, Bhatts, Kalavats, Marashees and Brahmins received money.  They left saying: “may the Guru’s son live for 20 Yugas.”  Many beggars were given money.  They all praised Guru ji, wherever they went.

It was noon and Baba Narayan Das ji called everyone for Langar.  The groom walked ahead with Guru ji and the Bharaat followed.  They went to the home of Baba Narayan Das ji, where celebrations were taking place.  The view could not be written.  The reader and listener would have to picture the celebration in their minds.  Guru ji was very handsome, dressed as the groom.  A canopy was carried over his head.  Guru Arjan Dev ji had chaurs being waived over his head.  They looked like swans flying over his head.  The Bharaatis were wearing expensive clothes and jewellery.  Everyone sat in lines inside Baba Narayan Das ji’s home.  Guru ji and Sri Hargobind ji sat on sandalwood stools.  Their hands were washed and plates of food were brought out.  The delicious food was distributed to the whole Bharaat.  The pakvaans were made with 7 types.  They had dry fruits and mevas in them.  Yoghurt with spices was distributed.  Lentil dumplings were in the yoghurt.  Everyone praised the Langar.  The soft white rice was distributed to all.  Two types of rice came: salty and sweet.  The sweet rice had coconut, raisons and almonds in them.  The skilled chefs had prepared the food with great care.  The women of the village were sitting nearby, watching the Bharaat eat.  They were wearing beautiful clothes and jewellery.  They were singing songs of joy.  They were singing the folk songs with their cuckoo-like voices.  Their surma-filled eyes were dancing to the beats of their songs.  The women said the Sitnees (teasing) and made jokes about the men in the Bharaat.  Everyone laughed and enjoyed themselves sitting there.  Even though the women would say the Sitnees and call the Bharaatis names, it was funny for all to hear.  It was a happy time for all.  Everyone was smiling as they finished eating.  They were all so happy and didn’t want to get up to leave.  They said: “we have never seen such a celebration before.”  They all forgot where they were sitting and what the time was.  Everyone drank water and washed their hands.  The Bharaatis put money into their plates for the servants who were going to wash their dishes.  The Sangat got up with Satguru ji and went to the east side of the village.

Guru ji stood on the east side of the village and observed a nice place.  He said: “the people of Dallay village wish for me to leave a symbol.  I want to fulfill the Sikhs’ wishes in this place.  The Sikhs can come here and bow.  Whoever comes and bows here, their wishes will be fulfilled.  I am going to do the ground-breaking of this place and make a Baoli.  The Sikhs can complete the Seva after I am gone from this village.”  A shovel was called for along with sweets.  Guru ji did an Ardaas and did the ground-breaking ceremony with the shovel.  Guru ji said to Bhai Salo ji: “stay here for some time and complete the Baoli in this village.  When it is ready, the Sangat can bathe here and do Simran of Satnam.  Their wishes will be fulfilled then.”  Guru ji then headed to the Junjvaas.  The beggars were given donations.

Guru ji came back to the Junjvaas along with the Sangat.  Everyone said: “Dhan, Dhan!  Your glory is great!”  Guru ji completed the rest of the traditions of the marriage ceremony.  He participated in the giving and taking of the gifts.

4-14 The Bharaat’s Return

When the Bharaat finished eating, the women of the village took Sri Hargobind ji with them.  The women looked at Sri Hargobind ji’s handsomeness and said to each other: “look how long and strong his arms are?  They are past his knees.  His eyes are so beautiful.  He is the son of Guru Arjan Dev ji.”  The women bowed their heads to Sri Hargobind ji.  They also laughed and joked with him.  They continued talking to each other: “he is so handsome, just as Damodri is pretty.  This is a beautiful couple, my friends.  May this couple live a long life.  May they live a happy married life.  Baba Narayan Das ji is so fortunate, whose son-in-law is the form of Narayan.  His son-in-law has the signs of a great king.”  Sri Hargobind ji’s mother-in-law came and kissed his head.  She touched his head and looked at his face.  She said: “may the evil eye never come upon you.”  The sisters, cousins and friends of Mata Damodri ji came and sat around Sri Hargobind ji.  They were mesmerized by his form.  They conversed and joked with Sri Hargobind ji.  Sri Hargobind ji spoke to everyone and laughed with them.  He met with everyone and joked with them.  When it was time to go, he went back to the Junjvaas.  Everyone else came as well.

In the Junjvaas, Guru Arjan Dev ji was sitting with a lot of Sikhs.  Sri Hargobind ji came and bowed to his father.  He sat near his father and looked radiant.  For three days the Bharaat stayed.  Baba Narayan Das ji requested Guru Arjan Dev ji to come to his home for the gift giving traditions.  Guru Arjan Dev ji got up and walked slowly to Baba Narayan Das ji’s home.  The gifts were placed out.  Jewellery and clothes were displayed.  Horses with beautiful saddles were there as gifts.  Pots and dishes were there for giving.  The Bhatts sang the praises of Guru ji’s glory.  Baba Narayan Das ji folded his hands and said: “Guru ji, you don’t count the assets of your servants.  I am very small.  I can’t serve you well.  I am only giving my daughter as your son’s servant.  You are the master of the poor and weak.  You came to my home and gave me honor.  Please be my protector in both worlds.  You save billions.  I have held on to your robe and came to your sanctuary, seeing you as the omnipotent one.  You are benevolent.  I am not your equal.  A dust particle cannot compare to the Sumer Mountain.  You have honored me with the glory of being your family member.  I am blessed.”  Guru ji heard the words of Baba Narayan Das ji and said: “well done, well done!  You have given so much and still are saying you haven’t given anything.  You have served me well.  Your humility is great!”  Mata Damodri ji was brought out and seated next to Sri Hargobind ji.  Mata ji’s hand was placed on Sri Hargobind ji’s to complete the traditions.  A Dholi was brought out, in which Mata Damodri ji was going to travel to her new home in.

Mata Damodri ji was seated in the Dholi.  The sisters, cousins and friends of Mata Damodri ji all began to cry.  Her mother hugged her daughter tightly and cried.  Baba Narayan Das ji came and told them to stop crying.  He told them that they can meet her when she comes back.  As the Dholi left, a shower of Paisas were down on top of the Dholi.  Mata Damodri ji was shedding tears, leaving her father’s and mother’s home.  So much money was showered over the dholi that beggars were no longer poor.  Baba Narayan Das ji followed the Dholi to the outer limits of the village.  Guru Arjan Dev ji realised that they had come quite far.  Guru ji stood and said to Baba Narayan Das ji: “you have come quite far.  Go back to your home now.”  Baba Narayan Das ji folded his hands and said: “I apologize for my mistake Guru ji.  You are the master of the universe and I called you to my home.  I should have come to you instead.  I did not serve you or respect you well.  You travelled far to come to my house.  People from every direction come to you and bring you expensive gifts.  You fulfill all of their requests.  Kings and beggars come to you with humility.  They renounce their egos and bow to your feet.  I am unwise and did not see your greatness.  I had to fulfill the worldly tradition of calling you to my home.  Otherwise I would have come to your home.  I made this mistake.”  Guru ji heard this and gave him hope.  He said: “you made no mistake.  I wanted to come to your home.  You are not wrong.  Have devotion and faith in your heart.  Do the Simran of Satnam.  Go back to your home now.  We are going to go to our home now.  Don’t feel bad about completing worldly traditions.”  Baba Narayan Das ji heard Guru ji’s words and folded his hands.  He put his head on top of Guru ji’s feet.  His brothers bowed to Guru ji’s feet as well.  Sri Hargobind ji came and bowed to his father-in-law’s feet.  Everyone bid farewell to each other and returned to their homes.

The people of Dallay said: “we have never seen a bigger wedding than this.  We have seen many weddings but we have never been so joyful.  There was so much happiness in this wedding.”  Guru ji’s radiance spread throughout many villages there.  The wedding was a great celebration.  Sri Hargobind ji, the Bharaat and the Dholi travelled.  They passed Sultanpur, playing many musical instruments on the way.  As the sun came down, they all passed the Beas and came to Goindwal Sahib.  The ferrymen were given a lot of money as they carried everyone across the Beas on their ferries.  They were all happy to receive the money.  The whole Bharaat stayed in Goindwal that night.  Their chariots were decorated well.  Mata Damodri ji’s Dholi was rested near Chabarra Sahib.  The other chariots stayed outside the village.  Baba Mohri ji served the Bharaat and organized the Langar and items of need for everyone.  Guru Arjan Dev ji bowed to Guru Amardas ji’s place.  He then took Sri Hargobind ji to Baba Mohan ji.  Sri Hargobind ji bowed to Baba Mohan ji.  Baba Mohan ji took him into his lap and gave him love.  He asked Guru ji how the wedding was and Guru ji told him the whole series of events.  They then went to the place where Guru Amardas ji used to stand and do Simran, holding the peg on the wall.  Everyone then ate and slept the night.

Guru Arjan Dev ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed at Baoli Sahib.  He then came to Guru Amardas ji’s place and thought of his grandfather to go into Samadhi.  After the Bharaat got ready, Guru Arjan Dev ji came to meet Baba Mohan ji.  He said to him: “please come with me and see the Teerath that has been made in Amritsar.  The Bani that was collected into Guru Granth Sahib ji, please come and see them.  They are illuminating inside the Harmandhir Sahib.  Sri Harmandhir Sahib ji is beautiful.  It is a happy time now.  Please come with us.”  Mammaji Baba Mohan ji heard this and accepted his request.  The elder Mammaji was seated in a palanquin and taken to Amritsar Sahib.  Baba Mohri ji, Baba Sansram ji, Baba Anand ji and others travelled to Amritsar.  Nishans were carried in front as they travelled.

The Bharaat soon reached Khadoor Sahib.  Baba Dhatu ji said to Guru Arjan Dev ji: “please camp here tonight.  Have food here and we can leave in the morning.”  Guru ji replied: “I am grateful for your request but we cannot stop here tonight.  It will take an extra day to go back home if we rest here tonight.  You served the Bharaat well on our way to the wedding.  Your Seva has been received.  We’ve only travelled 9 km from Goindwal.  We need to travel more.”  Baba Dhatu ji said: “if you don’t wish to stay the night, then please have the afternoon Langar here before you go on ahead.”  Guru ji agreed.  The whole Bharaat had Langar.  Guru Arjan Dev ji bowed at the place of Guru Angad Dev ji and did an Ardaas there.  Guru ji made Baba Dhatu ji continue on to Amritsar, which made everyone happy.  He wanted to give everyone leave with gifts from Amritsar.

As they travelled, they reached the place of Taran Taaran.  This place was purchased for 157,000 Rajitpuns from the two villages of the area.  A Sarovar was partially dug here.  Guru Arjan Dev ji and the Bharaat stayed here the night.  Langar was distributed.  The animals were given feed and the chariots were parked.  Guru Arjan Dev ji slept the night.

Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed in the Sarovar of Taran Taaran.  He gave donations to whoever came to ask.  As Guru ji travelled.  Donations were given to the poor on the way.  The Dhundhabs and Shehnais were played as they travelled.  The chariots travelled.  The horses danced on the way.  The bells in the animals’ necks could be heard.  They Bharaat travelled far with the groom and bride at the front.  The Bharaat laughed and celebrated as they travelled back.  They soon reached Amritsar Sahib and the Dhundhabs started to sound at once.  Baba Mahadev ji, Baba Mohri ji, Baba Dhatu ji, Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Salo ji and others came into Amritsar.  The people of Amritsar rejoiced at the sight of the Dholi coming in.  Their joy could not be contained.  Dhols, Dhundhabs, Napheeryas, Pattas and other instruments could be heard.  Daphs and flutes were playing as the Bharaat was welcomed back.  The Turris and Shutris played.  Mata Ganga ji heard all the instruments and her heart rejoiced.  She was extremely happy and she made preparations to welcome her daughter-in-law.  The women of the house were all happy and sang songs of joy.  Their bodies could not contain their happiness.  The wives of Baba Dhatu ji, Baba Mohri ji and others were all together.  They congratulated Mata ji.  Mata ji received the well wishes a hundred times.  Everyone was looking forward to seeing the new bride.  The women had money in their hands, ready to circumvent around the head of the new bride.  Guru Arjan Dev ji and the Bharaat came into the city.  The new couple went to the door of the home.  Mata Ganga ji did all the traditions of seeing the newlywed couple.  She took the couple along with the women of the household and went to Harmandhir Sahib to bow there first, before entering the house.  She carried many plates of ladoos and sweets.  Mata ji and the others walked to Harmandhir Sahib.  She didn’t let anyone go on top of horses or chariots.  Everyone walked and sang Gurbani as they went to Harmandhir Sahib.  The instruments played as they all walked.  Sri Hargobind ji was with his new wife as they walked.  The beggars were given donations on the way there.  There was a great crowd at the Sarovar.  Everyone bowed towards Guru ji and Sri Hargobind ji.  Mata ji told Mata Damodri ji to bow at the Deodi of Harmandhir Sahib.  They crossed the bridge and entered Harmandhir Sahib.  The bowed at the door.  Mata ji presented a lot of money and did an Ardaas at Harmandhir Sahib.  Everyone stood there with their hands folded to thank Guru Ramdas ji.  Prashaad was distributed and everyone did 4 Parkarmas of Harmandhir Sahib.  They all thought of Guru Ramdas ji as they bowed.  Mata Ganga ji and everyone else came back to the home.  The instruments played on as they walked back home.  Mata Damodri ji and Sri Hargobind ji were radiant; like Chitra and Chander, walking after doing the Pooja of Guru Brihaspati.  It was like Devki (Krishan’s mother) was walking with Krishan and Satyabhama (Krishan’s wife) after worshiping their ancestors.  They walked slowly to their home from Harmandhir Sahib.   Beautiful rugs and tarps were laid out.  Mata ji brought Mata Damodri ji into the home.  Mata Ganga ji’s joy could not be said into words.  Everyone was respectfully seated.  The traditions of the family were performed.

4-15 The Family Takes Leave

Mata Ganga ji showered money over her son and daughter-in-law and gave it to the poor.  The other women of the house did the same.  The women saw the new bride for the first time.  Everyone was very happy to see her and presented money and jewellery to her.  Mata Damodri ji was very beautiful.  All of the women were happy to see her.  All of the women looked towards Mata Damodri ji and praised her beauty: “oh my friend!  Mata Ganga ji is so fortunate.  Her husband is Guru Arjan Dev ji and her father-in-law was Guru Ramdas ji.  Her son is Sri Hargobind ji who is handsome like the moon without the marks.  There is no woman that wouldn’t find Sri Hargobind ji handsome.  His bride is beautiful.  They are like Ram Chander ji and Seeta.  May this couple live a long-married life.  They are made for each other.”  Mata ji made preparations for a great feast with Basmati and sweet rice.  Many types of delicacies and gourmet foods were made.  Sweets were made with dry fruits and nuts.  Salty rice was made.  Sweet rice was made with almonds, coconut, pistachios, raisons and other fruits.  Pooris, kachoris and yoghurt with Bhallay, coriander and other spices were made.  The men and women were all seated to eat the food.  Everyone was respectfully seated before eating.  People ate more food, even after being full.  The food was very tasty.  The horses and bulls were given feed made of grass and corn.  The Sevadaars, Masands and Sikhs; all did Seva of the guests.  The elders of the Guru’s house were seated and provided with what they needed.  Everyone was delighted with the Seva.  They were all fed well and given nice places to sleep.  Everyone slept the night.  Guru Arjan Dev ji received news of everyone’s condition in Amritsar.  He made sure everyone rested after eating.  Guru Arjan Dev ji ate after everyone else.  Guru ji was the last one to sleep after making sure the Guests all went to sleep.  Mata Ganga ji was extremely happy.  She prepared the sleeping area for the women.  She had the maids serve all of the elder women.  She sent milk for the Maamis from Goindwal and the women of Khadoor Sahib.  She sat next to her new daughter-in-law and fed her food with her own hands.  She had her sleep next to her.  Mata Damodri ji was 7 years old then.  She treated her like her own daughter.  Mata ji was happy to see her daughter-in-law.  Sri Hargobind ji slept close to his father.  Baba Mahadev ji went to his own home.  Baba Mahadev ji sent food for everyone.  Baba Mohan ji, Baba Mohri ji, Baba Dattu ji and other Sikhs all ate and slept.  The Masands made sure the Sikhs were all well.  Everyone slept the night.

Raag Vadhans Mahalla 5.. Chant..

I am a sacrifice unto those who have listened to the Keertan of Prabhoo Ram..

They are happy and peaceful, who have recited Har Har from their mouths, oh Ram..

The are happy and peaceful, they are full of virtues, they came for the benefits of others..

This world ocean is scary.  Prabhoo’s feet have taken many across from it..

The ones who have been blessed, oh my master, their accounts of Karma were not analysed..

Nanak says, I am a sacrifice unto those who listened to the glories of Prabhoo with their ears..1..

(SGGS 577)

Prabhoo’s glories are great; is what Saints say.  One should be humble, discarding one’s ego.  One should do the Simran of Satnam, which gives peace and joy.  Let go of your desires and anger.  Be attached to the Bhagti of Sri Bhagwant.  Be detached to the world and serve the saints with faith and devotion.  This will make life a success and become the ship by which one can cross.  Baba Mohan ji and Baba Dhatu ji listened and were happy.  They stayed quiet.  They then said: “the Sodhi family has lit up the world.  They have blessed everyone in the two worlds.  You are great on the Gurta Ghaddi.  You have given everyone many types of bliss.  You have brought glory to the elder Gurus and spread the praises everywhere.  You collected all of the Gurbani so the Sikhs can listen to it and recite it.  The Gurbani will be praised everywhere on earth.  It will be read in every home in every village.  Harmandhir Sahib is the Guru’s Teerath.  Its glory will grow by the day.  People from every direction will come and bathe here.  They will become pure by bathing in the Sarovar.”  Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji then said: “it is by your blessings that this Teerath was made and all the Bani was collected.  Gurbani has become the support of the Sikhs.  Many new Sikhs will be born.  Their Sikhi will never finish.  They will listen to the Guru’s word.  Whoever will listen to Gurbani and recite it with faith and devotion, they will be released from the cycle of birth and death.  Gurbani has great reverence.  It will take away the pains of millions.”  Everyone was happy listening to Guru ji.  They all praised him.  They all sat till about 9 am and then came back after bowing their heads.  Everyone did the Parkarma of Harmandhir Sahib and bowed again to leave the Deodi.  Baba Mohan ji and others, all came back to Guru ji’s home.  Everyone sat down where they found a seat.

Delicious food was cooked for all.  Plates were brought out with food.  Baba Kishan Chand ji ate food.  Baba Mahadev ji came and met everyone.  All of the seniors were sitting with Guru ji.  They had many discussions: “look what Prithi Chand did.  He is in opposition for no reason.  Sri Guru Ramdas ji gave the Gurta Ghaddi to Guru Arjan Dev ji in front of everyone.  Prithi Chand didn’t understand this.  One can try but they cannot get the Gurta Ghaddi.  He has earned a lot of bad deeds.  If he hasn’t reconciled by now, it is going to be impossible to meet with the Guru’s house afterwards.  His children will be broken form the Guru’s house.  He didn’t make wise decisions.  He should have come to the wedding.  It was a big event.”  Guru Arjan Dev ji said: “I respected my elder brother but he is full of corruption and jealousy.  He tried to kill Sri Hargobind ji many times.  He tried to take the Gurta Ghaddi many times.  Guru Nanak Dev ji saved Sri Hargobind ji.  I still invited my brother to the wedding but he didn’t accept.  His mind is corrupt.  He has gone to the Turks to have me killed.  He was not successful.  He is quietly sitting now.  I sent a letter and carts full of sweets.  He read my letter and said that he was going to have me killed.  I have let him go now as he doesn’t want to come to anyone’s funeral either.”  Everyone heard this and were upset at what Prithi Chand had done.  They all knew that he was corrupt, full of anger and argued a lot.  The whole family and seniors had other discussions.  They all praised Guru Arjan Dev ji.

The food then came.  Everyone ate.  Baba Mahadev ji organized the food for this day for the whole family and relatives.  The love grew in the family as time went on.  Baba Mohan ji, Baba Mohri ji, Baba Dattu ji and others all sat together and enjoyed each other’s company.  They would talk about the elder Guru’s times.  They would spend the whole day together and not know where the time would go.  5 days had passed like a few hours.  Everyone needed to go back to their homes.  Everyone said: “we don’t wish to go back home but we must.  We are tied down by love but please give us leave.  We wish to stay in Amritsar forever.  You have put the net of Maya on to the universe so we must go home.”  Guru ji gave them all clothes and jewellery as parting gifts.  Baba Mohan ji and Baba Mohri ji along with Baba Sansram ji and Baba Anand ji were given gifts and leave.  Everyone’s hearts were full of bliss.  Baba Dhatu ji and his wife were given gifts.  They gave their love to Sri Hargobind ji and left.  The women hugged each other, over and over again.  Everyone went to their homes and praised Guru ji as they left: “he is sweet, calm, loving and great.  He is wise and full of virtues.”  The family from Khadoor Sahib and Goindwal Sahib went to their homes.  Baba Kishan Chand ji and Mata Dhanvanti ji stayed 8 more days and left after that.  They were happy to see their grandson’s wedding.  They spent a lot of money on the wedding.  They went to their village.  They had a lot of love in their hearts.  Mata Dhanvanti ji met Mata Ganga ji and went home.  The other Sikhs all went to their homes as well.  Guru ji gave them gifts as they left.  In this way, the wedding of Sri Hargobind ji was done.  When Sikhs will read about this, their troubles will be washed away.
