3-31 Sri Hargobind Sahib ji is put in education
Many days have passed and Sri Hargobind ji was getting bigger and stronger. Everyone was happy to see him grow. Guru Arjan Dev ji saw his son grow up fast and thought to himself: “it is time that Sri Hargobind ji begins his studies. He should receive an education.” Guru ji was considering on where to send Sri Hargobind ji for his studies. He continued thinking: “I should discuss this with my older brother, Baba Mahadev ji. His mind is calm. I will go to his home and ask him.” Guru ji went to his brother’s home and met him.
Guru ji bowed to his brother with respect and sat down. It was as though Krishan was meeting Baldev (Balram). They met with love and Guru ji began to speak: “you are my elder brother who is like my father. You never think about my merits or demerits. Sri Har Gobind ji is your servant. You have been graceful to him. You have prayed for him which has saved him from many troubles. I have come to tell you that it is time that he should begin his education. I ask you for your advice on who should be teaching him. Where should we send him?” Baba Mahadev ji heard his brother’s words. Baba ji was an Aatamgyaan even though he did not speak much. He said to his brother: “don’t think of anyone else, you should go to the person who gave you your son. The Jatt, the wise one, Baba Bhudda ji is complete and powerful. His words are never without meaning. He is complete in powers. He is omnipotent. He is a warrior who has destroyed the vices. Don’t send your son to anyone else but him. Baba Bhudda ji will teach your son as you want him to. He has all types of educations.” Guru ji heard Baba Mahadev ji’s words and obeyed.
Guru Arjan Dev ji called 5 Sikhs and said to them: “where the wise Baba Bhudda ji lives, go to him and bow to his feet with your hands folded. Say my name and ask him that I have asked him to come to me. Bring him back with great respect. Go to him right now.” The Sikhs bowed to Guru ji and headed towards Baba Bhudda ji’s Beer. They all met Baba Bhudda ji and bowed to his feet with respect. They gave Baba ji the message. Baba Bhudda ji was happy to be called upon by Guru ji. A great joy arose in his heart. Baba Bhudda ji got up and traveled to Amritsar with the Sikhs. He came to meet Guru Arjan Dev ji, whose Bani makes your sins run away. Baba Bhudda ji met Guru Arjan Dev ji and bowed to his feet. Guru ji saw Baba ji and got up. He respected him a lot. Guru ji gave a lot of respect to Baba ji and had him sit next to him. He asked how he was: “are you well? Your mind is connected to Akaal Purakh. You are generous who has the Aatam Gyaan. You have Brahmgyaan in your heart.” Baba Bhudda ji spoke: “Satguru ji, you came to earth taking on a human form. People were going to Hell and you came to protect them and save them from Hell. You are hidden from the unwise. The wise people know exactly why you have come to Earth.” Guru ji asked for 5 Munns of Prashaad. The Prashaad was placed in front of Baba Bhudda ji. Guru ji then said the great words: “Baba ji, please command us to distribute this Prashaad to the Sangat. Please take Sri Hargobind ji as your student. Please teach him Gurmukhi and other educations. He has come by your words and so you must bless him further. Please teach him the 35 letters of Gurmukhi and have him recite the correct pronunciations.” Baba Bhudda ji responded: “I am a Jaat who keeps grass. I don’t know anything. I don’t know how to teach. I’ve never taken an education so will I teach?” Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji said: “you are the keeper of all the powers. What skill or thing is there in this world which you do not know? Whatever you don’t know, that does not exist in this world. Whatever is in this universe, you are aware of it all. You know all of the skills and arts. Please don’t show me yourself like this. You are omnipotent. Today is a great day, complete my request by saying the name of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Give Sri Hargobind ji the education.” When Guru ji praised Baba Bhudda ji, Baba ji obeyed his request. There was nothing that Baba Bhudda ji did not know. Baba ji was happy and had the Karah Prashaad distributed. He bowed to Guru Arjan Dev ji and had him do the Ardaas for Sri Hargobind ji to begin his education. Baba Bhudda ji brought slates and wrote the 35 letters. He gave it to Sri Hargobind ji. Baba Bhudda ji wrote Ik Oankaar and the other letters. He wrote it to the last letter. Sri Hargobind ji read all 35 letters the first day.
It was the second day and Sri Hargobind ji memorized the 35 letters. On the second day he learned the Mohaarni- the vowels with the Mukta letters. Sri Hargobind ji memorized the Mohaarni as well. On the third day, he began to write words. Sri Hargobind ji begin to pronounce the letters perfectly. Sri Hargobind ji was the cause of all the education. He was learning Gurmukhi as a drama. He was Akaal Purakh in a child’s form. Baba Bhudda ji then had Sri Hargobind ji read from the Pothi. Everyone was amazed to see how fast the child learned. The ones that did not know his glory were amazed: “it didn’t take long for him to learn. He reads like he already knows.” Guru Arjan Dev ji was happy that his son was able to read Sri Japji Sahib. He saw that he was ready to read Gurbani. He was able to read everything right away. Guru ji asked for more Prashaad and placed it in front of Baba Bhudda ji. He had Sri Hargobind ji bow to Baba Bhudda ji: “he has given you education. Education lives in his heart.” Sri Hargobind ji bowed to Baba Bhudda ji. Karah Prashaad and Langar was distributed in celebration of reading Gurbani. Guru Arjan Dev ji gave great donations to the poor and needy. There was a great celebration. The Dhundhabs, Shehnais and Napheeryas played. The big Nagaras sounded. Sri Hargobind ji was loved by all. The fortunate ones would meet him. Baba Bhudda ji was happy and filled with love. He hugged Sri Hargobind ji and looked at him. He kissed his forehead and blessed him: “you will be a great warrior who will have a quiver full of arrows in the kumerkassa. You will have a great sword by your waist and a strong bow in your hand. You will kill many sinners. There will be no one stronger than you. You will wage war on the battle field and be victorious. Your arms will be powerful. Your body will be big and strong.” Just as Vishvamittar was happy with Ram Chander and gave him Vidya; he gave him mantras and blessed him; he gave him education with love; that is how Baba Bhudda ji gave education to Sri Hargobind ji. He gave him the blessing which gave him the skills. Baba Bhudda ji was really happy. There was a great celebration.
Baba Bhudda ji gave the Vidya of reading Gurbani which Sri Hargobind ji learned quickly. Baba ji then blessed Sri Hargobind ji with warrior skills. He said: “you will learn how to fight by yourself. Archery and sword fighting you will understand. You will know how to kill many enemies. You will be a great rider of horses. You will ride it and make the horse jump. You will know how to fire a gun while riding.” Baba Bhudda ji gave all the Vidya to Sri Hargobind ji. As days passed, Sri Hargobind ji grew bigger. Mata Ganga ji was happy to see him grow up. She would ask him to recite Gurbani while having him sit in her lap. Mata ji was really happy to hear him. She would bow to Guru Nanak Dev ji in gratitude. The days passed and Sri Hargobind ji grew. (Baba Bhudda ji had learned the Vidya of the Warriors, Shastervidya, from Guru Nanak Dev ji after returning from Sach Khand. Baba Bhudda ji had that Vidya which he taught to Sri Hargobind ji but as he was so powerful, he was able to transfer most of it with his words).
3-32 Paira Mokha brings the Praan Sangli
There was a Sikh named Paira Mokha who lived with Guru Arjan Dev ji. He served Guru ji day and night. Sikhi was illuminating inside his heart. One day, a Pandit from Kanshi came, who came to stay with Guru ji. The Pandit was a scholar and wanted to do Katha in the court of Guru Arjan Dev ji. He wanted to receive payment after finishing his Katha. He wanted the gift of Gyaan, contentment and the truth. He wanted to do Katha but he was shy to place his request in front of Guru ji. Guru ji was omniscient and knew what the Pandit wanted. Guru ji kept the Pandit with him. After a few months of living with Guru ji, to fulfill his wish, Guru ji asked: “I wish to hear the Katha of the Vedas and the Upanishads from you.” The Pandit was very happy and began to do the Katha in Guru ji’s court. The Vedas and Upanishads talk about the form of the Brahm. He talked about the Aatma, Brahm and consciousness. He did Katha everyday as per Guru ji’s command.
One day, Bhai Salo ji came to see Guru ji. He came and bowed to Guru ji, grabbing his feet. Guru ji respected him very much and said: “Salo is very beloved to me. You are the faithful Bhagat of the Guru.” When the Pandit, that was doing Katha, heard that Bhai Salo was considered a faithful Bhagat, he thought to himself: “why am I not considered a faithful Bhagat? I do Katha according to the Vedas in Guru ji’s court. Why am I not considered a faithful Sikh? How can I ask Guru ji this question?” Guru ji knew what the Pandit was thinking. Guru ji wanted to clear his doubt in due time. The Pothis that Pandit ji had, all of the Katha was done. Guru ji said to the Pandit: “Pandit ji, go forward from here. You have done the previous Katha beautifully.” Pandit ji responded: “the Pothis that I have, I have done all the Kathas I could. I don’t have the next Pothis. They are at my home in Kanshi. If it is your command, I will have those Pothis delivered from my home.” Satguru ji said: “yes, don’t delay a good deed. Have them all brought here. The Katha of Upanishads should happen.” The Pandit said: “I will send my son to get them. The Pandit calculated an auspicious time according to Jyotish, for his son to go and get the Pothis from his home. On the auspicious day, the Pandit did the pooja of Ganesh ji according to his traditions. He had Guru ji provide money for the travels and sent his son off to Kanshi. The son looked left and right to see for any signs. He listened for any bad omens as he travelled. He soon heard a bad omen and cancelled his journey. He came back to Satguru ji. Guru ji called the Pandit and his son. He said to them: “Pandit ji, you wanted to be called a faithful Bhagat. This shows that you are not a faithful Bhagat yet. Your son heard a donkey bray and saw it as a bad sign, while you had done the Pooja of many Devatas. You did not have faith on your Bhagti towards any of them. I will show you the proof of my Sikhs faithfulness.” Guru ji called Bhai Paira Mokha ji. Guru ji said to him: “there is an island called Sangladeep; there is a Pothi of Guru Nanak Dev ji there, called Praan Sangli. Go there to the king of Sangladeep and get the Pothi. It is a far from here. Sri Satguru Nanak Dev ji visited that place and gave them the wisdom of Gurmat. The King Shivnaab and the citizens of the country all became Sikhs. Satguru Nanak Dev ji blessed the island and gave them the wisdom of Satnam. Whatever he did there; the wisdom that he gave to the good king; you will know what happened there when you get there; it is all written in the Praan Sangli. Guru Nanak Dev ji gave the King his Pothi and had told him that his Sikh will come to get this Pothi from him. It is now time to bring that Pothi from that place.” Guru ji told Bhai Paira on how to get there and what to do there. Guru ji wrote a Hukamnama regarding the Pothi for the King of Sangladeep. Guru ji said: “the Pothi is there of Guru Nanak Dev ji.” Guru ji told Bhai Paira the directions. Guru ji told Bhai Paira not to open the Pothi to see what’s written inside. He wanted him to bring the Pothi straight to him.”
A Sikh came and brought 5 Paisas. Guru ji saw the money and picked them up. He gave that money to Bhai Paira for the cost of the travels. Bhai Paira sent off. He bowed to Guru ji and left right away without looking for any omens or calculating auspicious timings. After he left, Guru ji said to the Pandit: “did you see my Sikh? He has to travel a long way. He did not consider day or timing. I only gave him 5 Paisas which is practically nothing. He has faith in his mind. He knows that the Guru is sending him and that the Guru will take of everything. He had faith on his Ardaas. These kinds of Sikhs are considered faithful Bhagats. They do not have faith on anything else but the Guru. You have faith in many Devatas which broke by the bray of a donkey.”
Bhai Gurdas ji observed the whole situation. Guru ji told Bhai Gurdas ji to write about it. He obeyed and wrote 2 Kabits in regards to this. He wrote about the faithful Sikhs.
Bhai Gurdas ji Vaar. Kabit..
A Vaishnav Pandit who called himself a faithful Bhagat, read the Bhagwat Geeta and called himself faithful to the Geeta.
When he would go to the Teerath, he would worship the Devatas and calculate an auspicious time to go.
When he started his journey, he heard a donkey bray. Seeing this as a bad omen, the Pandit returned home.
It was as though the wife called herself Patibrat but was filled with doubt.
The Patibrat who does not have faith on the one, she will never reach the highest position.447.
Meeting the Sikh Sangat has such a radiance that removes doubts like a true Patibrat woman.
The Sikh does not ask for auspicious days from Jyotish experts. They do not ask about planet and constellation positions.
They do not look for good times or do Seva of Devis or Devatas.
The Sikh stays connected to the Guru’s word, the Nirankaar.
The Sikh saint is the child; the Guru is the parent who takes care of the Sikh. The Sikh receives Mukti by contemplating on the Braham.448.
When Satguru ji had Bhai Gurdas ji write the Kabits, the Pandit understood everything. He said: “you are correct.” The Pandit became calm and eventually become a faithful Bhagat. Doubt did not enter his mind again. He bowed his head and did his Katha.
Bhai Paira Mokha was travelling to Sri Lanka. He reached the place of Raja Shivnaab. The grandson of Raja Shivnaab was Raja Mya Medini. He was a man of Dharma who did Bhagti. The Panth was flourishing from his home. The Raja served his citizens well. He had a lot of faith on Guru Nanak Dev ji. He was a faithful Sikh who was the grandson of Raja Shivnaab. When his servants found out that Bhai Paira was here, they told the King. Bhai Paira said: “I came from the Guru with a Hukamnama. Tell the King that I have a Hukamnama for him.” The servants told Mya Medini. The King found out and got up himself. He had been waiting for someone to come from Punjab. He met Bhai Paira with respect and took him inside. He prepared a nice seat for him. All of the King’s people came to bow to Bhai Paira. Bhai Paira Mokha gave the Hukamnama to Raja Mya Medini. The Raja took the Hukamnama and put it to his hand with great joy. He told his people: “do a great celebration. Guru ji’s command has come. He has blessed us by sending us his Sikh. Tell everyone to come and meet the Sikh. Sound the Dhundhabs and the Vaajays. The Shehnais should sound. Hang garlands of flowers everywhere. Hang them on the doors and windows. Tell everyone to come and bring their gifts.” Karah Prashaad was made and fragrant essences were sprayed everywhere. Flowers were showered with fragrances everywhere. Thousands of men and women came to meet Bhai Paira Mokha. An open court was in session. The Raja brought in Bhai Paira Mokha. The Raja introduced the Sikh and wanted the Hukamnama to be read out loud. Conches were blown and incenses were lit. Sandalwood essences were sprayed. The Raja said out loud: “come and see Bhai Paira ji. He is a Sikh sent by Guru Arjan Dev ji. Give him the Pothi of Praan Sangli.” They were all happy to hear the Hukamnama. Everyone brought many gifts for Bhai Paira Mokha. They felt like they had met Guru ji by listening to the Hukamnama. When Bhai Paira observed their traditions, he was amazed to see how far away Sikhi flourished from Punjab. He thought to himself: “Guru Nanak Dev ji is great! He saved the whole universe.”
Bhai Paira Mokha spent many days there and spent time reciting Bani and preaching Sikhi. He then told the Raja that he wanted to leave. The Raja brought gifts along with the Praan Sangli Pothi. He also sent a letter of gratitude for Guru Arjan Dev ji. He wrote: “my head bows to your feet. All of the Kings that sat on this throne, they were all seen as a Guru, after Guru Nanak Dev ji came. The Raja has always been a preacher of Sikhi. A Sikh of Guru Nanak Dev ji.” Bhai Paira ji left for Punjab. On the way he thought to himself: “the glory of Guru ji is great. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s glory is wide spread.” He met Sikhs in almost every city he travelled through. They would respect him everywhere he went. After travelling a long route, he came to the shores of the Ganga. There was a Sadhoo there who saw Bhai Paira carrying a Pothi on his head. He was amazed to see that the Pothi was hovering above his head. He did not see any support under the Pothi. Only the Sadhoo saw this, no one else. He saw the miracle and wondered. He followed Bhai Paira. He stayed with Bhai Paira at night time. He said to him: “who are you and where are you from? What Pothi is this? I am a Sadhoo. I wish to see this Pothi.” Bhai Paira said to him: “this Pothi is from Sangladeep. I am going to Amritsar, back to Guru Arjan Dev ji. Come with me to see this Pothi. I am commanded not to open the Pothi. I request you to come with me to Amritsar.” The Sadhoo heard this and thought to himself: “I need to see this Pothi. It’s powerful. I will go to Amritsar.” They both slept during the night.
In the morning they bathed in the Ganga and began their travels. The both of them had conversations of Akaal Purakh as they travelled. As they travelled, Bhai Paira ji had a bit of ego come into him. Because he travelled a long way, he was a little proud of himself. When he came to his home in Amritsar, he opened up the Pothi and began to read it overnight. The art of Yoga was in that Pothi. There was a deep knowledge in that Pothi. He read about many techniques of Yoga which are not found anywhere else. Whoever would practice it, they would become powerful. The Maya of Parmeshwar looted Bhai Paira. He wanted to steal some of the pages of the Pothi. The ones that he liked, he hid them in his home.
In the morning, Bhai Paira ji bowed to Guru ji and presented the Pothi and the letter of Raja Mya Medini. Guru ji knew what Bhai Paira had done. When Guru ji opened the Pothi and understood all of the powers. He read the whole Pothi and then realised that Sikhs would read this and go towards the powers of Yoga. People who would be corrupt would read this and run after Riddhis and Siddhis. They would try to possess ghosts and powers. They will be without Gyaan and become fake Gurus. This Pothi should not be kept. Guru ji spoke to Bhai Paira with anger: “you’ve taken some pages out. Bring them back and add them in again.” Bhai Paira quickly brought the pages back and asked for forgiveness. Guru ji took the Pothi and drowned it into the river. People were amazed to see this. The Sadhoo that came with Bhai Paira was amazed to see what Guru ji did. He folded his hands and said to Guru ji: “Maharaj, please listen to my request: I travelled a long way to see the Pothi. I wanted to copy it. I wanted to know what was in there. You drowned it into the river.” The Sadhoo lost his patience. He put his head on to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji looked at the Sadhoo and had love for him. Guru ji said to the Sadhoo: “if you wish to read the Pothi, jump into the river and get it.” The Sadhoo dove into the river and took out the Pothi. Guru ji was happy with the Sadhoo and gave it to him. For a while, he served Guru ji. He had faith in Guru ji. Bhai Paira ji asked for forgiveness. Guru ji forgave him. He told Guru ji of all the things that happened along his travels. Another Sikh noted the Katha of Bhai Paira’s travels down. That Katha was included into the Saroop of Bhai Bano. It was a map to Sangladeep. Bhai Bano added it into the copy of Guru Granth Sahib ji that he had scribed known as the “Khaari Bir.” The whole Panth knew about this. Bhai Paira stayed with Guru Hargobind Sahib ji for a long time. He stayed in his command and was blessed.
3-33 Bhai Gurdas ji and Baba Bhudda ji go to Baba Mohan ji to get the Pothis
The Katha of the Satguru will continue. I can write as much as wisdom has been given to me. This Katha should be listened to with love. This Katha is about Guru Granth Sahib ji. The Bani of the 5 Gurus, 15 Bhagats, Bhatts and other Saints will be compiled together to bind Guru Granth Sahib ji. Oh listeners, listen to this Katha with love. Sri Satguru Arjan Dev ji was in Amritsar. His words were filled with Gyaan. He was the gem of Gyaan. His praises were like the ocean, filled with gems and pearls. There are life forms in the ocean. Within the Guru, there are Gursikhs. Truth, contentment, calmness, purity, beauty, compassion, forgiveness, joy, tenderness, simplicity, without jealousy, patience, dharma, Gyaan, were the virtues of Guru ji and his Sikhs. Guru ji was deeper than the ocean. He was wise and able to see the Aatma separate from the body. Love and Prema Bhagti were his waves. Just as swans enjoy the ocean, the saints enjoy themselves. The jumms run away. He gave bliss to many people. He recited and scribed a lot of Gurbani. He wanted to compile all the Bani together in one place. The Sikhs would read and listen to it and be filled with joy. He didn’t want Bani to be mixed with other stuff.
One day, Guru ji was sitting in his Divaan. He had compassion in his eyes and gave the Sangat the wisdom of Satnam. One Sikh stood up and made a request: “Guru ji, Prithi Chand and his Sikhs are bad. They make up their own Bani. Meharvaan likes to write poetry and put Guru Nanak Dev ji’s name to confuse people in it. People think it’s Bani. The wise Sikhs identify it as false but the new Sikhs don’t know the difference. How will the unwise know which is the real Bani? The Bani will get mixed in this way. Everyone will do their own thing then. Please make the effort to make the Gurbani separate from the fake Bani.” Another Sikh got up and said: “without the Guru, the Bani is raw. Guru Amardas ji had said this in his Bani. How would one know which Bani is raw and which is real? There are Sikhs like Bhai Gurdas ji who write Bani. Is his Bani raw? He has written the praises of the Satguru that teaches us Gurmat. He has written the praises of Akaal Purakh and Akaal Purakh’s Avatars. He also wrote Kathas of wars and great conflicts by warriors. Should the Sikhs read and listen to that or not?” The gracious and compassionate Guru ji spoke to dispel doubt: “Gurbani is the supreme, which should be recited everyday. Recite it, sing it and understand the meanings. The meanings will give you Gyaan. Rise up at Amritvela and recite the Gurbani. A Sikh should memorize Bani. There is greatness and rewards in this. Love will arise inside you. The Bani of the Poets is at the medium level, which help you understand Bani. You will get the Gyaan of Prabhoo and the Avatars from that Bani. The poetry of the poets which has the same ideology of Gurbani, has the praises of the Gurus in it; recite and listen to that too. It will give you joy as well. There are many Banis with stories which are outside the ideology of Gurmat. They have good and bad stuff in them. Don’t read the opposite ideologies. That will make your mind restless. Keep Gurbani as the highest which will give you Mukti. Bhai Gurdas ji’s Bani praises the Gurus. Reciting Bhai Gurdas ji’s Bani will give you Sikhi. Understand it as well.” Guru ji said this and thought about the good of the world. He thought about the 10 incarnations of the Guru: “what will happen after the 10th incarnation? Who will the Sikhs bow to? There needs to be a place where the Jot will reside. The Guru Granth Sahib ji should be written.” In this way Guru ji spoke in the Divaan: “Goindwal sits on the shores of Beas, the place of the Satguru. Baba Mohan ji, my Mammaji, lives there who has a really high status. He is the eldest son of Guru Amardas ji. He lives above this world and is unaware of his senses most of the time. He has the Bani of 4 Gurus. His son Baba Sansram ji was the scribe. He has all of the Bani. Somebody needs to get those Pothis from Baba Mohan ji. How shall we get those Pothis? We will make one binding for all the Gurbani.”
Bhai Gurdas ji was sitting in the court as well. He heard Guru ji’s words and folded his hands. He said to Guru ji: “if it be your command, I will go to Baba Mohan ji and get the Pothis. I will meet Bhai Mohan ji and Bhai Mohri ji to get the Pothis.” Bhai Gurdas ji was Baba Mohan ji and Baba Mohri ji’s cousin. Guru Arjan Dev ji heard Bhai Gurdas ji and noticed that he spoke in pride. Just a little bit though. Guru ji heard the “I” in his words and thought that he should let him go. Guru ji thought to himself: “he won’t get the Bani but his pride will be broken. Bani can only be understood when that last strand of ego is gone.” Guru ji gave him permission to go.
Bhai Gurdas ji set off for Goindwal in the South direction. Bhai ji reached Goindwal and first bathed at the Baoli Sahib. He recited Japji Sahib and remembered his uncle, Guru Amardas ji. He then went to Chabarra Sahib. Baba Mohan ji was sitting in a Samadhi, in the lotus pose. His conscious was in Guru Nanak Dev ji. Baba Mohan ji had the windows and doors locked. Bhai Gurdas ji yelled out: “Bhai ji, your younger brother, Gurdas, is here from Amritsar. Guru Arjan Dev ji has sent me here for an important task. Please give me your Darshan.” He knocked and yelled for a long time. He continued: “oh gem of the family of Guru Amardas ji, you are a high Brahmgyaani. You are the son of the Guru. I bow to you. I worship you. Meeting you, will wash all my sins away. You have seen the Aatma like a gooseberry in the hand. You have the deepest Gyaan. You are in the Jog, the unbreakable Samadhi. Please accept my plea. Guru Arjan Dev ji has sent me. Guru Arjan Dev ji, the treasure of virtue, whose praises are wide spread.” Bhai Gurdas ji knocked all day, all evening, and all night. It was now morning. Baba Mohan ji did not speak nor did he open his eyes. His Samadhi was deep. He did not care for the world. In the morning Baba Mohri ji came and said to Bhai Gurdas ji: “he is a Mast. He won’t hear you. He is in his Samadhi. He can stay like this for months. He does what he pleases. He has no needs. He lives in Hari and Hari lives in him.” Bhai Gurdas ji made many efforts, knocking. He tried but he failed. His pride was broken. He was hurt and depressed. He thought to himself: “how will I face Guru ji.” Bhai Gurdas ji came back to Amritsar and met Guru Arjan Dev ji. He bowed to him and said: “I made a great effort, standing at the door, knocking. Bhai Mohan did not open the door. I shouted all night but Baba Mohan did not open the door. I said your name and called out to him; he still didn’t open the door. Baba Mohri ji told me that Baba Mohan ji was not aware of the world.” Baba Bhudda ji heard the whole thing. He thought to himself: “this is an important task. This is an obstacle. Who else can go? Bhai Gurdas ji was from that finally. If he didn’t succeed, than who can? Only Guru ji will be able to do this task.” Baba Bhudda ji folded his hands and said: “Guru ji, shall I go and get the Pothis?” Guru ji smiled and said: “this is good. You should go and try.” Baba Bhudda ji heard the command and started off to Goindwal.
Baba Bhudda ji was in his high 90s. He walked to Goindwal and bathed at Baoli Sahib. He was filled with joy. He then went to Chabarra Sahib, to see Baba Mohan ji. The door was closed. Baba Bhudda ji knocked and yelled: “oh son of Guru Amardas ji, I have come to see you. I am your servant, Bhudda. Guru Arjan Dev ji sent me. Please listen to my request and be gracious to me.” There was no response from Baba Mohan ji. Baba Bhudda ji tried hard but he was not successful. He knocked with both his hands and tried to open the door, but it did not budge. Baba Bhudda ji thought to himself: “what shall I do now?” Baba Bhudda ji used his strength and pulled the door out. Some of the bricks came apart as well. He put the door to the side and went inside. He saw Baba Mohan ji sitting in the Padamasana. He was in a deep Samadhi and had no awareness of his own body. His breath was raised to his Dasam Duaar. His body was like wood. His limbs were still. He was not breathing. The radiance of his face showed that he was connected to the Aatma. His hair was open and spread around. He was wearing a cloth around his waist and his back was bare. Baba Bhudda ji was amazed to see him. He tried to wake him up by shaking his body. The Samadhi was deep. The breath did not come down. Other people heard the noise of the door breaking and went to tell Baba Mohri ji. Baba Mohri ji came right away to see Baba Bhudda ji. Baba Mohri ji saw Baba Bhudda ji massaging Baba Mohan ji’s feet to wake him up. Baba Mohri ji bowed to Baba Bhudda ji and said: “don’t wake him up. He stays like this for months at a time. When he wakes up, he may disrespect you as he does not care about high or low. He may curse you if he gets angry. Don’t touch his body or try to get him to open his eyes. He stays in his own self and does not talk to anyone. He sits in this room for many months. He only comes out sometimes. When he comes out, he eats roti with two hands, like children. He goes deep into his Samadhi. Only he knows how deep he is.” Baba Bhudda ji bowed to Baba Mohan ji. He then bowed to Baba Mohri ji, who is praised as the son of the Guru who obeyed. Baba Bhudda ji figured out that he was not going to be successful. He went back to Amritsar. He bowed to Guru ji and told him that he could not get the Pothis. He told him how he broke the door and tried to massage his body to wake him: “his Samadhi did not open. Who else would give us the Pothis? He is the eldest. Only he can give them. I broke the door to go in. I massaged his temples and feet. His Dyaan did not open. I came back without the Pothis.”
3-34 Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji goes to get the Pothis
Guru ji listened to Baba Bhudda ji, of how he tried to open Baba Mohan ji’s Samadhi but he was unsuccessful. “How can this Samadhi open as he does not listen to anyone? The door was locked from the inside. He is a Mast. Nobody comes close to him out of fear from his curse. If he get’s angry, he says something which becomes true. For this reason, people leave him alone.” Guru ji thought to himself: “Baba Mohan ji was not happy with my father as he did not get the Gurta Ghaddi. Guru Amardas ji was quite old but Baba Mohan ji did not listen to him when he was told to bow to Guru Ramdas ji. (Guru Amardas ji did make the prophecy that he would have to bow to Guru Arjan Dev ji one day) He has done the amazing task of keeping and protecting the Bani of the Gurus. Baba Sansram ji wrote it all and also collected Guru Ramdas ji’s Bani. The collection of Bani cannot be found anywhere else. This is the most important task. Whatever Akal Purakh is doing, is good. The respect for Gurbani is being shown. I must go and sing his praises. Mammaji will give me the Pothis. The task will not be completed without me going. Nobody else has the Pothis. Baba Sansram ji wrote the Pothis from the source. I must praise the saint, Baba Mohan ji. When I go to him, his anger will calm down. Love will arise in him for me. That is how seniors and great people are. They like simple people who do not have corruption in their minds. If he trusts me, he will give me the Pothi treasure. I need to go.” Guru Arjan Dev ji, the master thought about this. “This needs to be done quickly. This will be good for the whole world. Guru Granth Sahib ji must be compiled. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Panth should spread. Millions of people will get food. Whoever reads and listens to Gurbani, Prema Bhagti will come to them. They will receive Mukti. King and pauper, high and low, whoever reads Gurbani, they will be saved.” Guru ji spoke in his court: “make preparations for me to go to Goindwal Sahib in the morning.” Everybody found out that Guru ji was going in the morning.
The next day, the Sangat and Guru ji bathed in the Sarovar. Guru ji did an Ardaas to all the Gurus to be blessed. He wanted to get the Pothis from Goindwal. He sat in his palanquin. Many Sikhs went along with Guru ji, whose name would wash away sins. It looked like the moon along with stars was travelling. They all reached Goindwal, where the Beas flows. They all first went to Baoli Sahib and bathed there. They recited Japji Sahib. Guru ji focused on Guru Amardas ji as he recited Gurbani. Just then, Guru Amardas ji appeared in front of Guru Arjan Dev ji. Guru Arjan Dev ji was over-joyed and bowed to him. He was filled with love and joy. His eyes filled with tears and his hair on his body stood up. His throat swelled up and he said his plea. Guru Amardas ji placed his hand on Guru Arjan Dev ji’s head. He said to him: “you will be successful. Many people will benefit from this task. Go and praise “Mohan.” He will give you the Pothis. This is the greatest task of compiling the Gurbani together. If Mohan speaks with anger, stay calm. Tolerate his harsh words. Your aim is to get the Pothis. He will speak harsh words and then he will regret it as he is a Sadhoo. He will listen to what you say.” After saying this, Guru Amardas ji disappeared back into his form. Guru Arjan Dev ji was really happy with this. Guru ji and the Sikhs set up camp. Guru ji took an instrument called a “tamboora,” and went towards the Chabarra Sahib with the Sangat. Guru ji sat on the floor without any mats. The son of the Guru, Mohan, was sitting in the Chabarra Sahib. Guru ji sat on the street in front of the Chabarra. Guru ji sat on the floor, cross-legged. The Sikhs ran to get mats or a seat for Guru ji. The Sikhs brought rugs and mats but Guru ji told everyone that he didn’t want to sit on a rug. He said: “we are beggars today.” Guru ji tuned his tamboora and began to do the Alaap of Gauri Raag. He did the Alaap of the tones of Gauri. He began to sing a Shabad. He did the Aaro and Aavro of Gauri Raag.
Gauri Mahalla 5..
Mohan, your temple is high and unsurpassed.. Mohan your gates are so beautiful, they are the places for saints to worship..
In these unsurpassable temples, oh compassionate Thakur, the saints do your Keertan.. Wherever saints and Sadhoos get together, they think of you..
Oh compassionate master, your compassion and merci, give these to me, be merciful to the meek.. Guru Nanak Dev ji says, I thirst for the blessed vision of your Darshan; receiving your Darshan, I am at peace..1..

Baba Mohan ji heard the sweet words. He understood everything. There was a window in the Chabarra where Guru Amardas ji would visit people. Baba Mohan ji got up and opened the window. He looked outside and saw Guru Arjan Dev ji sitting on the ground, doing Keertan. He said to him: “first of all, your father took our right from us. The Gurta Ghaddi was in the family of the Bhallas, the Sodhis did the Seva and took the Gurta Ghaddi. You were three brothers. You are the youngest and took the Gurta Ghaddi from your elder brothers. Your father went to Sach Khand and your family fought each other. You kicked out your brother, Prithi Chand. You became the Guru and now you come to me, without any shame. You are here to take all the Pothis of the Gurus’ Gurbani. You made some efforts by sending people but it was all to waste. Now you are here. You are sitting on the floor, being humble. You are faking it. Do you still have no shame? You are stubborn and without shame. People don’t know you. You loot the whole world. You show yourself as a humble Bhagat.” Baba Mohan ji was actually speaking out of love. Just as elders make fun of their young by twisting their accomplishments, that is what Baba Mohan ji was doing. He was in fact praising Akaal Purakh, calling Akaal Purakh the great looter: who tempts the whole world while being omnipotent. Guru Arjan Dev ji knew what his uncle was doing and began to smile. Guru ji took his tamboora and sang another Shabad which praised Baba Mohan Ji’s words:
Sri Mukhvaak..
Mohan, your words are beautiful, your ways are different from the world. Mohan, you only have faith in the One, everything else is false for you..
You have faith in the one Master, the permanent, you see his play everywhere..
You conquered the world with the word of the Guru, the Aad Purakh, the Master of the world..
You yourself move and you are the still one, you support the universe..
Says Guru Nanak Dev ji, save my honor, all of your servants seek the protection of your sanctuary..2..

Baba Mohan ji heard his praises and was happy. He had generosity in his heart. He thought to himself: “the one who sits in front of me is the form of the 4 Gurus. He is the same as the other Gurus. He has no anger or desires. I see no vices in him. Whoever becomes his enemy, will regret it. Whoever serves him with love, will be happy. He heard my harsh words and was patient. He was stable like the ocean. His heart is calm like mine. I can’t compare to him. I still get angry. He is singing Gurbani. My father, Guru Amardas ji, told me to bow to Guru Ramdas ji. I made an error as I didn’t obey him. I will not make the same mistake twice. I will correct my mistake to be in peace. I was talked about in the world, now I will give the Pothis to Guru Arjan Dev ji. I will be on good terms with the Guru now.” Baba Mohan ji took the Pothis and discarded his intellect that was without love. He came out of the Chabarra Sahib and went to go see Guru Arjan Dev ji on the street. He saw the Jot of the 4 Gurus in front of him. They all resided in Guru Arjan Dev ji. Baba Mohan ji said to Guru ji: “Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, you are great.” Satguru ji saw Baba Mohan ji come towards him and then sang a third Shabad:
Sri Mukhvaak..
Mohan, the Satsangat thinks of you, they were meditating on you. Mohan, the ones who chant your name, the Jumms do not come close to them..
The Jumms don’t come close to the ones who meditate on you with a still mind.. The ones who think of you with their mind, word and actions, they receive all of the rewards.. The people who were filled with filth, they met you and became Gyanis.. Says Guru Nanak Dev ji, your kingdom is forever, oh complete and supreme Prabhoo..3..

Guru ji sang with love. Baba Mohan ji stood there listening. Guru ji sang with perfect harmony and beat. Guru ji’s throat swelled up with love. His eyes were filled with tears. Baba Mohan ji looked towards his nephew and noticed: what a great soul he was. He was really happy to see his nephew. He placed the Pothis in front of Guru Arjan Dev ji. He then placed his head on the feet of Guru Arjan Dev ji. He did not want to pick up his head again. He wanted to be forgiven for his harshness. He wanted to be forgiven for everything, past and present. He wanted to be forgiven for not bowing to Guru Ramdas ji; for not listening to his father. Guru Arjan Dev ji noticed that his Mammaji was now pure as pure gold. All of his ego was now gone. Guru ji said: “don’t do this. You are my elder. You are my mother’s older brother. You are my Mammaji, the giver of peace. My father was the great Guru who washed his Sikhs’ pain. Guru Amardas ji, my grandfather, the great Guru, you are his eldest son. You are the biggest Jogi, Gyani and the greatest Prema Bhagat. You have great devotion. It is right for me to bow to you. Your mind is without desire and vices. The fact that you are my Mammaji, this is enough for me to bow to you. For this reason, don’t bow to me. Please accept my obeisance to you. I bow to your feet.” The son of the Guru, Mohan, heard this and spoke with humility: “Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, you are my sister’s son. I bow to your feet. I made a mistake, a long time ago. Forgive me and relieve my guilt. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. Please burn the forest of my pain by the fire of your grace.” When Baba Mohan ji said this with humility, Guru Arjan Dev ji asked his Mammaji some questions for the Sangat to hear.
3-35 Baba Mohan ji gives the Gurbani Pothis
“Sri Mammaji, you are the ultimate forgiver. What vice do you have? You have always been full of complete virtues. You are a complete Brahmgyaani.” Baba Mohan ji heard Guru Arjan Dev ji and responded: “you already know the history that had happened, but I will still tell you what happened. After telling you, I will ask for forgiveness for my stubbornness. My father was a complete Brahmgyaani. He was the giver of peace and joy. Sri Guru Ramdas ji was the fortunate one who did my father’s Seva, with love and devotion. Guru Ramdas ji was very humble and did not consider himself as high. He was humble and without any ego. He saw his Guru as the supreme and considered himself full of vices. Guru Amardas ji saw his servant as complete. He saw all of the virtues of the Guru in Guru Ramdas ji. He saw humility, Bhagti, contentment, compassion, purity, truth, dharma, generosity, sacrifice, patience, effort, ambition, and vairagya in Guru Ramdas ji. I did not have those virtues. If Guru Amardas ji said it was “night,” Guru Ramdas ji would say “night.” If Guru Amardas ji said “day,” Guru Ramdas ji would say “day.” He obeyed everything Guru ji said and made Seva his life. He let go of the world’s ways and joys. I did not recognize the Guru in my father. I saw him as my father. I didn’t understand that it was Parmeshwar. If I did see him as the Guru, I still saw him as my father. I took credit for being the son of the great Guru. I did not do his Seva. I was proud that my father was the Guru. Sri Guru Ramdas ji saw him as Akaal Purakh and did his Seva. Our father was happy with him. When it came time to transfer the Gurta Ghaddi, our father saw Guru Ramdas ji as the rightful heir. Father called me first and told me to bow to Guru Ramdas ji to receive all the joys: “I see Guru Ramdas ji as the Guru. He can tolerate the impossible. The Jot of Akaal Purakh resides in him. He is the greatest of all humankind. Whoever bows to his feet, they will receive all of the joys.” I was full of pride and did not bow to Guru Ramdas ji. Pithaji told me repeatedly to bow, but I did not listen to him. I saw myself as the son of the Guru. I did not go close Guru Ramdas ji. I saw the Gurta Ghaddi as my right. I saw him as the Sodhi who lived with us. I saw him as lower than me. My brother Baba Mohri ji, he obeyed Pithaji when he asked him to bow to Guru Ramdas ji’s feet. He bowed to Guru Ramdas ji and obeyed Pithaji. Pithaji was happy with him and said: “Mohri, you are the mohri (leader). You will have Riddhis, Siddhis and Niddhis. You will have Brahmgyaanis in your family. You will be all-powerful. You will be in bliss. You will have a great status. You kept the reputation of the Bhallas. Your generations will grow and prosper. You will be in bliss and prosperous till you are alive. After your breaths finish, you will come to me in Sach Khand.” Pithaji blessed him with many boons. Brother Mohri was in joy with Pithaji’s words. Guru Ramdas ji got the Tilak and Pithaji went to Sach Khand. After, Guru Ramdas ji sat on the Gurta Ghaddi. He preached Sikhi with love and greatness. Sikhi spread far and wide. He was the greatest among all humankind. Sikhs came to worship him from every direction. His radiance was the greatest. He blessed millions. The sinners were punished. I was worried seeing his radiance. I was left with nothing and he was Akaal Purakh’s form. I humbled myself and went to the place where Pithaji would sit and do Bhagti. I went to the Chabarra and did an Ardaas to Pithaji by folding my hands: “Pithaji, I did not follow your path. I am in pain, day and night. I burn with jealousy. My chest burns a slow burn. I did not see you as omnipotent. Please place your hand on my head and bless me. You can make a rye into a mountain and a mountain into a rye. You can do this in instant. You are the Guru that resides in the whole universe. You rid the pain of your servants. You are the Ishwar, full of virtues, you are desireless, you are above consciousness. You give the Name to sinners and bless them. You are worshiped in this world and protect your servants in other dimensions. Whether the Sikh be a householder or a Sanyasi, you do not let them be in doubt. You are the Jogi of Jogis and the Bhogi of Bhogis. You are loved by your servants. I bow to your lotus feet. Forgive me. You are generous and the ocean of compassion. You are omniscient, you know what is in our hearts and grant us our wishes. You are the root of bliss and the destroyer of vices. You kill the lion of attachment. You kill the ego-snake like the hawk. You extinguish the fire of greed like a cloud. The ones who serve you, you are happy with them. You made Guru Ramdas ji your form. You put your Jot in Guru Ramdas ji. The Jot of the Supreme Bedis, Guru Nanak Dev ji, that same Jot lived here. Oh Prabhoo, for the sake of your Name, forgive my mistakes and see me as your servant. I bow to the calm, consciousness, Prabhoo. I bow to the Gyaan form. I bow to the friend of servants. I bow to your supreme words. Please listen to my plea and bless me. I made a mistake of not obeying you. Please forget my mistake. Children make mistakes but parents correct them. Show me the right path. Victory be to you! Jai! The whole world sings your praises. I bow to the form of the Guru. There is no other form equal to you. No other Avtar is equal to the Guru Avatar. You are filled with bliss.” When I made this request to Guru Amardas ji, Guru ji was happy and I heard him speaking in the room. I heard him in the Chabarra. Guru Amardas ji said: “I am happy to hear your plea. I am happy with you. You are forgiven because you are humble now. Listen to my words: the Pothis of Gurbani that you have, keep them safe with you. The son of Guru Ramdas ji, the Gyani, he will compile the Gurbani in one binding. He will collect all the Bani. Only you will have the Bani of the Satguru. He will come to you. Don’t give the Pothis to anyone else. Only give the Pothis to Guru Arjan Dev ji. When he comes, give him the Pothis with love. You didn’t bow to Guru Ramdas ji but you will need to bow to his son, Guru Arjan Dev ji. Let go of your ego and bow to him. He will protect you in the other dimension. Don’t think of anything else. Don’t have doubts. Do Bhagti here. Stay in the Chabarra and do Bhagti. Guru Arjan Dev ji will be the same form as me.” I heard these words of my father. I stayed in the Chabarra, waiting for you. Today was that day. I spoke harsh words to test your patience. I saw the virtues of the Guru inside you. Give me the sanctuary of your feet. I’ve kept the Pothis for you. I give them to you now. I wish to ask for forgiveness for my mistakes. My chest has been burning for this long. Please extinguish this fire inside of me.” Guru Arjan Dev ji heard his uncle and said: “I am the beggar asking for Gurbani. I place pleas in front of you. I can’t command you. I am humble to your asks. I am younger and smaller in every way. You are great. You love us children. I can’t refuse your asks, though. I am your child, do as you please.” Baba Mohan ji heard this and was happy. He bowed to Guru Arjan Dev ji’s feet again. He saw the humility in Guru Arjan Dev ji and was impressed. Baba Mohan ji folded his hands with humility. He said: “forgive my mistakes.” Guru Arjan Dev ji was happy with his Mammaji and sang the fourth Shabad to destroy his pains:
Sri Mukhvaak:
Mohan, you are successful and prosperous along with your family.. Mohan, your son, friends, brothers and your family, whoever meet you will be blessed..
You have blessed the universe, the pride was destroyed for whoever met you.. Whoever calls you great, Jumms will not come close to them.. You have limitless virtues, which cannot be stated, my Satguru, you are supreme..
Says Guru Nanak Dev ji, I seek only your support, by which the whole world is saved..4..2..

“First Bhai Gurdas ji came and then Baba Bhudda ji came, you destroyed their egos. I have taken all of those Pothis by sitting on the ground and doing Keertan. By this Gurbani, the whole world will do Simran of Satnam. They will be blessed and be in bliss. Sri Mohan ji, you are great that you kept the Gurbani in one place. You have been gracious to thousands. Sikhs will read this Gurbani and be blessed in this world. Saints come to this world to be gracious to the world. You have done a great task.” Baba Mohan ji said: “I am in your command. I am your servant and wish to come with you to Amritsar. I wish to live in your feet and serve you.” Love was overflowing in his heart like the high tidal waves on the night of full moon. His eyes were shedding tears, his throat swelled, his hair on his body stood up. Guru ji said to his uncle: “Mammaji, you are old and a complete Brahmgyaani. The Chabarra is Guru Amardas ji’s place. You connect in Samadhi here with the supreme Akaal Purakh. Keep reciting the Mantra of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Stay blessed and your family will be blessed. Please be gracious to me from here. You can see the whole world; receive my news from here.” Baba Mohan ji obeyed Guru ji’s command. Baba Mohan ji did Parkarma of Guru Arjan Dev ji and bowed to his feet again. He went to the Chabarra and sat down in a Samadhi as he had been doing before. He recited Bani in his heart and recited the Mantra of Guru Nanak Dev ji. In this way, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji received the Gurbani Pothis. He thought of Guru Amardas ji and bowed to him with joy.
