2-25 Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji has his Pugh Ceremony
It was 1638 (Vikram), monsoon season (rains), Bhadron (August/September), the third day of the light phase of the moon when Guru Ramdas ji, the ocean of virtue, left his body. On the fourth day, everyone gathered at the site of the cremation of Satguru ji’s body. Guru Arjan Dev ji looked at the ashes and had tears in his eyes. Guru Arjan Dev ji said: “Sri Guru Pitha ji was my support. I don’t see him anymore. He is no where in this world in physical form. I feel alone without you. My brother is my enemy and is not my support.” Guru ji was talking like a normal person to show the people he is like them, in order to connect to them. In fact, Guru Arjan Dev ji was above all emotions. Baba Mohri ji consoled Guru Arjan Dev ji, as part of the worldly drama, fulfilling his humanly role and said: “the Satguru is complete and exists everywhere. Whoever does Simran of the Satguru with faith and devotion, the Satguru comes there and protects them. You are acting right now. You are Guru Ramdas ji yourself. You are putting on a show for everyone. I can see the Satguru in you, right now. You have all the powers of the Satguru and you will protect your Sikhs.” In this way Baba Mohri ji spoke to Guru Arjan Dev ji. The Sikhs got together and collected the ashes. They did the traditions in the best way. The praises of Guru Ramdas ji were being sung in the whole village.
One person went to Amritsar and met Prithi Chand. He told him everything about Goindwal: “Guru Ramdas ji was in Goindwal for only one day when he left his body and went to Vaikunt (Sach Khand). Your younger brother did the cremation tradition of your father.” Prithi Chand heard this and became anxious right away. He mounted his horse and headed towards Goindwal. He got his wife Karmo ready along with his servants. They all headed towards Goindwal.
When Prithi Chand reached Goindwal, he saw a huge crowd there. Everyone met Prithi Chand. Baba Mahadev ji was with him as well. They got off their horses outside of the village. Their eyes were filled with tears. Prithi Chand was crying, but he was filled with deceit. The tears were not of love. He was filled with anger. He began to shout out loud: “he took the Tilak of the Gurta Ghaddi for two days and then gave Pithaji poison to kill him. He was greedy to be worshiped. He had deceit in his heart and killed Pithaji. Doing this, you cannot be the Guru. This is a grave sin what he did. He will have to suffer for this sin. Only the deserving person gets the Gurta Ghaddi. This is the tradition from the beginning. Pitha ji was strong and free of illnesses. His mind and body were fine. He was happy. He came here for one day. What happened to him all of a sudden? There was no other reason for him to die other than poison. This Baba Bhudda and these other Sikhs are on my brother’s side. They weren’t afraid to do this sinful act.” Baba Mohri ji then spoke up: “why are you angry for no reason? Meet everyone nicely. Speak sweetly with everyone. I know you are a troublemaker. I have raised you. If you want to fight, do it in private, not in front of everyone.” In this way, Baba Mohri ji stopped him from yelling. Prithi Chand’s eyes were filled with tears of deception. Baba Mahadev ji then spoke up as well: “you should speak appropriate words right now. It is not good for you to speak like this, brother. Sangat that has come from far, they will hear your words and talk amongst themselves. Think before you speak.” Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji was being blamed for murder but he was unaffected by all this. He was in Aatam Gyaan and his mind was calm and serene. Many people tried to get Prithi Chand to understand and scolded him for what he was saying. Prithi Chand’s mind was worried that the Dastaar of the Gurta Ghaddi was going to slip through his hands. He decided to stay in Goindwal and forcefully take the Gurta Ghaddi. He was in pain and stayed in Goindwal for 12 days.
On the 13th day, the tradition of the Bhog was completed as told by the Gurus. Baba Mohri ji met everyone regarding the Pugh ceremony. He said to the senior Sikhs, including Baba Bhudda ji: “as Sri Guru Ramdas ji instructed, we should do what he said, when it comes to tying the Pugh.” Baba Bhudda ji spoke as well: “Guru ji’s instructions, as your father has directed you, you are Guru Amardas ji’s son, do what is right. Do what you think is right.” Baba Mohri ji then spoke: “it is right what you are saying. We should do what Guru Ramdas ji said. Prithi Chand is egotistical though. Because he has a lot of money, he fights with everyone. He will treat everyone bad. He speaks harsh words and is very bad. He will yell and fight with all of us. He will blame us for everything. Let’s hold a court and see how he behaves first. Let’s see what he says and we can then test him. We will tie the Pugh after that. He is jealous and is not sweet-natured. He can’t see anyone else’s glory or hear their praises.” A court was held near Baoli Sahib in which everyone came. Guru Arjan Dev ji and Prithi Chand came as well. Baba Mahadev ji came and sat down too. Baba Bhudda ji and other senior Sikhs came and sat down. Everyone was called to attend. Baba Mohri ji spoke in the court: “the words of the Satguru are the supreme. His words are a line on the rock. We should follow the wishes of the Guru. You Sikhs should decide what you feel is right and give the Pugh to the rightful person. All you Sikhs need to tell us on whose head the Pugh should be tied on.” Prithi Chand could not stay quiet any longer after hearing all this and said with great anger and ego: “why do you wise people not think about this? Why can’t you see the rightful heir? My father was just mad at me and said that he was going to give the Gurta Ghaddi to my younger brother out of anger. He didn’t mean it. How can the elder become the younger? If you mess up the traditions, your time will come with your children as well. The family traditions will be spoiled. Everyone will do as they please then.” Baba Bhudda ji and Baba Mohri ji then spoke: “the words that Sri Guru ji said, you heard them as well. We can’t go against the wishes of the Satguru. We can’t go against his words.” Both elder Sikhs got up, took the Pugh and gave it to Guru Arjan Dev ji. He was sweet-natured like his father. He was able to destroy joy and sorrow. Guru Arjan Dev ji thought to himself: “what’s in a Pugh? What Pithaji wanted to do, that has already happened. The light of the Guru has already come into me. His blessing is steady inside me. It cannot be taken away nor can it be stolen. The colour that Akaal Purakh has coloured me in, cannot be removed, even after a billion attempts. What’s the point of causing a fight? Let’s diffuse this situation.” Guru Arjan Dev ji got up with the Pugh in his hand. He folded his hands and approached Prithi Chand. He placed the Pugh in Prithi Chand’s lap and said: “you are my older brother and I depend on you. Forgive me and let go of your anger. Love me, seeing me as yours. It was Pithaji’s wish that’s why the Sikhs gave me the Pugh. I want you to have the Pugh and tie it on your head. Let go of your anger and don’t consider me as your enemy. See me as your younger brother and raise me.” Prithi Chand gladly took the Pugh and tied it on his head, immediately. Everyone watched this event. Usually, Baba Bhudda ji would tie the Pugh but Prithi Chand didn’t wait for him. Prithi Chand thought to himself: “I am the Guru now! I got what was rightfully mines!” Everyone was quiet as they saw this. They were well aware of what was happening. They understood that Guru Arjan Dev ji was the True Guru and this act was just to make Prithi Chand not cause any problems. The light was in Guru Arjan Dev ji. Everyone went to their homes after and praised Guru Arjan Dev ji: “look how calm he is. He has no ego whatsoever. He has not a lace of joy or sorrow. He is great and deep. He has all the virtues. His father tested him well, before giving him the Gurta Ghaddi.” The next day, the Sangat came and brought gifts. The Sangat decided that the True Guru is Guru Arjan Dev ji. They saw how Prithi Chand pouted and took the Pugh, but was not the real Guru. The light of the Guru was in Guru Arjan Dev ji. The gifts were placed at the feet of Guru Arjan Dev ji. Everyone bowed to him with great respect. Their wishes were fulfilled by Guru Arjan Dev ji. The Sangat was very much convinced after their wishes were fulfilled. They all said: “this is Guru Ramdas ji himself.” Seeing the thousands of Rupees and gifts gathering with Guru Arjan Dev ji, Prithi Chand grew jealous. He could not take this. He tried a lot of things but no Sikhs came close to him to bow or give him gifts.
Many Sikhs came the next day as well and bowed to Guru Arjan Dev ji. Sangat from far away lands came to see Guru Arjan Dev ji. Prithi Chand watched for many days and saw this as a great disrespect towards him. He thought to himself: “this is all Mohri’s fault and the others with him. Baba Bhudda is to be blamed as well.” He was burning with jealousy inside. He couldn’t do anything about it. He said: “not one person came to me. The Sikh Sangat has been led astray. They are making the Sikhs worship Sri Arjan. I shouldn’t stay here any longer. I will go back to Amritsar and have the Sikhs worship me.” Prithi Chand was in pain and left for Amritsar.
The Emperor was now Jahangir. A person named Sulhi was one of his Umraavs. Sulhi came to the Majha region with a great army. Prithi Chand was in Amritsar but the Sangat still didn’t come to see him. He found out about Sulhi coming to his area. Prithi Chand went to go meet Sulhi Khan with a lot of people. He brought a lot of expensive gifts for him, in the hope of befriending him and causing harm to his younger brother. He met him in royal regalia and said to Sulhi: “I sit on the throne of Sri Nanak ji. You are the master of the country.” He showed himself as the Guru and wanted to use Sulhi Khan’s help when he needed it. Sulhi heard him and respected him greatly. He said: “Sri Nanak was a great Peer of the whole world. I will present my prayers and wishes to you. I will serve you and worship you to fulfill my wishes.” Sulhi gave Prithi Chand a horse with a silver saddle. He also gave him a lot of money and both of them hugged each other. Prithi Chand spoke to Sulhi in sweet words and gave him a very expensive Siropa. They befriended each other and gave each other gifts. The other Turks that came with Sulhi, they were given money by Prithi Chand as well. They were given Siropas too. Giving them money, Prithi Chand made them his own. The Turks were happy to receive money from him. They praised him: “Prithi Chand is a good Peer.” They stayed together for three days and then Sulhi spoke with respect: “let me know if there is something I can do for you. If you were to ask for me, I will always be in your command. You are my friend and I will see your task as my own. I will get Jahangir to give you respect.” Prithi Chand said to him: “you will be blessed by the Guru Peer. I trust you. I can do everything and don’t have any problem of pain; but my younger brother, Arjan Dev, has taken my rights away from me. The Sangat now goes to him to give him money. I am in conflict with him and want this to go away. I will need your help in this. Other than this, there is no other problem that I have.” Sulhi said to him: “don’t worry about anything. I will do as you wish. Whatever you need, I will complete it with all my power.” Having this conversation, Sulhi mounted his horse and left. Prithi Chand spend a lot of money to make these Turks his friends and thought to himself: “there is no one equal to me.” He was full of ego.
2-26 Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji comes to Amritsar
After receiving the Gurta Ghaddi, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji’s powers increased to an infinite level. He was the form of Hari. Nine Niddhis, Riddhis and 18 Siddhis were standing in front of him at all times, with their hands folded, waiting for his command. There was nothing he couldn’t do in the three dimensions. No one could stop him. No Devata, demon or power could stop him to do what he pleased. They were all singing his praises. Inder and the other Devatas (the powers of the world) were in Guru ji’s command and sung his praises. They all bowed to him. He was the supreme. He was the Satguru. The Avatar of Akaal Purakh. If he wished to, he could send someone to Naraka (Hell). If he wished to, he could take someone from Naraka and send them to Swarga (Heaven). He could make a king into a beggar, and a beggar into a king. His one word could kill a person or make a dead person alive again. In anger or joy, whatever he would say, would become reality in an instance. He could destroy or bless right away. His completeness and limitless power could not be hidden but he would keep it to himself. As hard as he would try to hide it, it would still shine through. The Sikhs would see and test Guru ji’s power and understand that he was, in fact, the same as Guru Nanak Dev ji and the previous Gurus. He knew what was in every heart. He was omniscient. Guru ji’s Sikhs were also full with unlimited power. Those Sikhs understood the power of Guru ji. Baba Bhudda ji and other Brahmgyaani Sikhs would bow and serve him. Other Sikhs came as well to serve him. They would come to him and do Ardaas for their wishes.
As Sikhs heard of Guru Ramdas ji’s departure, they came to meet Guru Arjan Dev ji, bringing him gifts. Seeing him, their wishes would be fulfilled. They would sing Guru ji’s praises as they were filled with faith and devotion after seeing him. Guru ji’s praises spread throughout the world: “Guru Arjan Dev ji was given the Gurta Ghaddi, this became well-known. The light of Guru Nanak Dev ji was in Guru Arjan Dev ji now. Prithi Chand lives in Amritsar and claims to be the Guru, repeatedly. Nobody worships him or brings him money and gifts. Nobody comes to bow their heads to him. He is not happy. He tries really hard to convince the Sangat but nobody listens to him. Guru Arjan Dev ji has been living in Goindwal for many months now. Sri Guru Ramdas ji sent Bhai Gurdas ji to Agra to be with the Sangat there. As soon as he heard that Guru Ramdas ji has left for Sach Khand, he started to make his way towards Punjab.”
Guru Arjan Dev ji gave a lot of donations to the poor and made them happy. They were fully satiated with what they received. The poor would call Guru ji the “Kalapbrish” (the wishing tree of Heaven). They called him the Avatar of “Chintamani” (a gem which fulfills all wishes). The villages near Goindwal Sahib, the beggars from there, all came to see Guru Arjan Dev ji. Their wishes were fulfilled by Guru ji. Everyone would leave singing Guru ji’s praises. Guru Arjan Dev ji gave donations with both of his hands. People praised him for his donations. Guru Arjan Dev ji thought to himself: “my Pithaji established the city of Amritsar. I wish to live there. Goindwal is the place of my Nannaji’s (maternal grandfather) family. They should live here in peace. They should stay here to grow and prosper. It is not right to stay here as thousands of Sikhs come here to meet me. The family is under pressure to take care of everything. It is not right to put them under these obligations.” In this way, Guru ji decided to go to Amritsar. The master of the universe, Guru Arjan Dev ji, spoke to Baba Mohan ji and Baba Mohri ji. He bowed to them and said: “my Pithaji commanded me to do the Seva of the Amritsar Sarovar and told him it is to be considered the same as his body. I am to serve it with faith and devotion.” Both the Mammajis agreed and gave Guru ji permission to go. Guru Arjan Dev ji made preparations with everyone. He met the whole family, including his elders and cousins. He got on top of his chariot and headed towards Amritsar Sahib. He rested one night along the way and reached Sri Amritsar Sahib.
When Guru ji reached Amritsar, he first bowed to the place where his father, Guru Ramdas ji, used to sit. The ocean of wisdom then went inside his home, that was constructed by Guru Ramdas ji. He began to reside in Sri Amritsar Sahib. He remembered the command of the Satguru and began the Seva of the Sarovar. The Sangat would come from far, bringing gifts for Guru ji and presenting their Ardaas.
The Sangat from Agra headed to Punjab with Bhai Gurdas ji. They wanted to meet Guru Arjan Dev ji. They travelled singing Shabad Gurbani with love. The Sangat would meet others along the way and did Keertan. They would rest the night. They would do Keertan in the evening, sitting down, as well as Amritvela. The did Keertan and Simran along the way. They wished to meet Guru Arjan Dev ji with faith and love. The love in their hearts grew by the day. Their leader was Bhai Gurdas ji, the Masand of Agra. As they reached the Beas River, the water was deep and the flow was very strong. There was no boat nearby by which they could cross. Bhai Gurdas ji stood by the shore, thinking what to do. He thought to himself: “we will need to rest here. In the morning, there may be boats that will take us across. The Sangat is tired and there is no preparation of Langar.” As Bhai Gurdas ji was thinking, there was a Sikh reciting Gurbani:
Dhanasri Mahala 5..
The word of the Guru resides in my heart and is with me all the time..
The water cannot drown it; the thief cannot steal it; the fire cannot burn it..1..Rahao..
(SGGS 679)
Bhai Gurdas ji heard the Gurbani and decided that Guru ji gave him the solution: “Guru ji has told us to cross the river by the support of the Shabad. We will not drown.” He turned towards the Sangat and said: “we were foolish and couldn’t figure this problem out. The Shabad of the Guru can take us across any ocean. Can the Shabad not help us cross this small river? Have faith in the Guru’s word and let’s all cross this river without delay.” Bhai Gurdas ji said “Satnam” out loud and entered the river first. The water level of the river lowered to knee-level. Everyone looked towards Bhai Gurdas ji and were amazed. The flow of the river that would have swept away an elephant, was calm and lower now. The Sangat also uttered out loud: “Satnam,” and followed Bhai Gurdas ji. The water didn’t go over anyone’s waist as they all crossed the river. The Guru’s Shabad was made as the boat, by which the whole Sangat crossed. The Sangat’s faith and devotion grew for the Shabad of the Guru. They knew that the Gurbani would help them cross the world ocean.
The Sangat soon reached Goindwal Sahib. They saw some of the kids playing in the street, who were the descendants of Guru Amardas ji. They were playing children’s games. As they were playing, some of the kids said: “this will happen if the Satguru wills it.” Bhai Gurdas ji heard this and thought to himself: “these kids have faith in the Guru’s will. Their faith is so strong in the Satguru. These children are the form of the Guru. There faith is beautiful and so are their words.” He folded his hands and bowed to the children. He said: “great are these children, who have the faith for the Guru in their hearts.” The Sangat rested the night in Goindwal. They all did Simran of Satguru. In the morning, everyone woke up and bathed in the Baoli Sahib. The Sangat met Guru Amardas ji’s family and bowed to them. Bhai Gurdas ji sat with his cousin, Baba Mohri ji, and heard about Prithi Chand’s doings. He heard the whole story and felt bad.
The Sangat and Bhai Gurdas ji soon set off towards Sri Amritsar Sahib. They rested one night along the way. Bhai Gurdas ji thought to himself: “if Guru Arjan Dev ji is the true Guru, then I want Guru ji to do something for me: when I bowed to the kids playing on the street for having faith in the Guru, I want Guru ji to recall this to me, without me asking. I will then have faith, that this is the fifth incarnation of Guru Nanak Dev ji, who is the true Guru.” He had this wish in his heart as they camped near Amritsar. They rested the night and woke up in the morning. The Sangat got ready and collected their gifts for Guru ji. They reached the place where Guru Arjan Dev ji was illuminating. They all bowed to his feet and presented their gifts. They were in bliss, visiting Guru ji. Love was over-flowing in their hearts. They were blooming like the lotus flower, seeing the sun; like the chakor looking towards the moon. They couldn’t take their eyes off of Guru ji. It was so much bliss. Guru ji saw the love in the hearts of the Sangat and blessed them all. Guru ji had everyone seated in the Sangat. They all had their wishes fulfilled. Guru ji casually spoke up: “Bhai Gurdas ji, tell me the truth: where the children were playing together, you saw them and bowed to them, what knowledge did you take from them?” Bhai Gurdas ji was over-joyed to hear this. He praised Guru ji in many ways: “the light that was in the four Gurus, is now inside you. I know this. You are the master of all the hearts. What shall I say? You know what happened with the children. Those kids speak about the Guru’s will with each other. I heard them and thought to myself that these kids are great, who have faith in the Guru. They believe in the Guru, being the master of the universe. I understood that these kids were Saints, the form of the Guru. I bowed to their feet.” Guru Arjan Dev ji was happy to hear this. He said: “Bhai Gurdas ji, you are a great Sikh. The wisdom of the Guru is achieved by the blessing of the Guru. You do Simran of the Guru with love. Your faith was on the Guru’s Shabad and you crossed the Beas with the whole Sangat, without any boat or ferry. The Sikhs that see the Guru as the only doer in the universe, they never need to face any obstacle. You saw me everywhere. You had faith and devotion for me. Stay with me from now on. You are now fortunate. You are dear to me. Take the responsibility of reading and writing, the great Seva of the Guru’s house. There will be others from the Sangat that can take your responsibilities of being the Masand of Agra. I want you to stay with me from now on. I will send someone else with the Sangat of Agra.” Bhai Gurdas ji bowed and said: “your wish will be a command for me. Please give me permission to go back to Goindwal and meet my family. I will come back to you after that.” The gracious Guru said: “go to Goindwal and then come back to me.” Bhai Gurdas ji went to Goindwal and stayed there for a while.
2-27 Bhai Gurdas ji goes to Goindwal and comes back to Amritsar
One day, Bhai Gurdas, from the family of Bhallas, having love for the Guru, left Goindwal Sahib and came to Amritsar. He was the nephew of Guru Amardas ji. He was really happy to see Guru ji again: “Guru Ramdas ji has 3 sons. The middle is Mahadev ji. Sri Arjan is the youngest. I wonder how the brothers are with each other. I know there was jealousy and rivalry before, I wonder if its less now. Since Guru Arjan Dev ji has become the Guru, I haven’t discussed anything about this with him. Let’s see how the tasks of the Guru Ghar is going now. Guru ji has newly sat on the throne and the older brother is in conflict. Before, the whole family was together; now the brothers are all separated because of anger.” Bhai Gurdas ji was thinking in this way and wanted things to be better.
Bhai Gurdas ji soon reached the city of Guru Ramdas ji and went to go meet Guru Arjan Dev ji first. He bowed to Guru Arjan Dev ji, recognizing him as the True Guru. Guru ji and Bhai Gurdas ji asked each other how they were. They both expressed well updates to each other. Bhai Gurdas ji told Guru ji about Goindwal: “the family of Guru Amardas ji is well. Baba Mohan ji, Baba Mohri ji, Baba Sansram ji (son of Baba Mohan ji, the scribe of the Mohan Pothi and the Pothi of Guru Ramdas ji), Baba Anand ji, Baba Arjanimal ji, Baba Arthmal ji (sons of Baba Mohri ji), Baba Sunder ji along with the women in the family are all well. They all wish for your well-being, Guru ji.” They sat and conversed in this way for a while. Food was brought to where they were sitting and talking. Food for the Sangat came as well. There were rotis made of channas that came. Everyone took 2 rotis. There was no dhaal (lentils) or vegetables. Bhai Gurdas ji ate the rotis with salt and water. It was difficult for him to eat them. Bhai Gurdas ji then said, laughingly: “if you think about worldly relations, I am at a higher level than you, being your Mamma (maternal uncle). You should call me Mamma. I can joke with you and ask you things. Let me tell you another thing, since you’ve sat on the Gurta Ghaddi, you have become the form of Parmeshwar for me. I see you just as I saw my Thayaji, your Nannaji. You are the Guru of the world. In this form, I am also your Sikh. You are worthy of worship. I came to you after a long time. This is the second time I’m seeing you since you became the Guru. You are the Guru and my nephew. I am your Sikh and your Mamma. You know all this. My question to you is: considering all those relations with me, why did you not make good food for me?” Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji heard this and smiled to Bhai Gurdas ji’s joking words. Guru ji said: “you reap what you sow. Humans eat what is in their destiny. Everyone ate the same food; nothing was hidden from you. If you want more respect, my mother, your sister, is sitting inside. You can ask her. She is the one that cooks the food and presents it to everyone. She makes the food for the Sangat. We eat what she gives us. She is my mother but she is your sister. You can meet her and ask her why she didn’t make gourmet food for you.” Bhai Gurdas ji heard Guru ji’s words and continued eating the dry roti. Guru ji ate the same dry rotis. Bhai Gurdas ji ate his food and washed his hands and mouth. He got up and went to meet Bibi Bhaani ji.
Bhai Gurdas went inside and bowed to his sister, as she was sitting next to the stoves. She said: “come brother, come sit down. How is Bhaji Mohan and Mohri ji? How are their families? You came after a long time here. You didn’t ask for us this whole time. Sri Arjan ji’s father went to Sach Khand. I am not able bare this pain. We have been living here ever since he left. I used to see the family everyday. There was a lot of happiness in Goindwal. They only send a letter once in a while. Whatever Ishwar wrote, only that will happen.” Bhai Gurdas ji heard her and said: “everyone is well in Goindwal. I was in Agra and I spent a long time there. That was the reason I didn’t get to see you for so long. I don’t know what happened in my absence. I wanted to see how everything was in Amritsar. Coming here I met everyone but I was shocked to see how all of you are doing. You are my sister, born in the house of Bhallas and married to Sri Guru Ramdas ji. For these reasons you became the Mata of the world. You are respectful for me for all these reasons. You are the most fortunate woman in the world. I came to you as your relative. You fed me dry rotis made of channas. Your house is great. You have the Gurta Ghaddi in your house. The Guru of the world is in your home. Why is good and proper food not made here? How did this all happen? Why is there so much shortage? If you have to worry about food, gathering money is an issue. What is the reason for this? Why is there poverty here? Sangat from around the world comes here. Your Sangat is huge. They come from all four directions. Where is the income going? If you are not using it, where is the money going to? I understand that you may be saving it and eating simple yourself, but when some visitor comes, you should give them rich food. Do you treat everyone else like me? Do they all get dry rotis too? You are Guru Amardas ji’s daughter? Bibi Bhaani ji spoke: “listen brother, the roti that you ate now, sometimes we are not even able to eat that. Goindwal had a lot of food coming in. So much food used to come as much was needed for one day. Jewellery, clothes were very simple for us. You’ve seen how simple we all lived. We wore simple clothes but the food there was very rich. By Pithaji’s blessings, there was never a shortage of food. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The leftovers were given to the animals. After feeding the animals, the rest was thrown into the river. Then, Sri Arjan ji’s father become the Guru. He was worshiped from every direction as well. The whole family was together then. Everything was running nice and smooth. After he went, these three brothers became enemies. They see Sri Arjan ji as small. Prithi Chand wants to become the Guru and causes a problem for Sri Arjan Dev, everyday. My younger son kept the Gurta Ghaddi in the Sodhi family. My other two sons are not obedient. They don’t listen to me. They want to be Gurus like their father, Guru Ramdas ji. But they see him as a worldly father. Prithi Chand is greedy for money only. If Sri Arjan had not listened to his father, the Gurta Ghaddi would have been gone from our house. This only belongs to the servant. You can’t snatch it. Only Guru Arjan Dev ji loved his father and kept the honor of the Sodhis. He completed my wish. He made my father’s words true. For this reason, I say that my younger son is great. By doing Seva of his father, he did not let the Gurta Ghaddi leave the family. He kept it in the home. Now he sits in peace and does Simran. He doesn’t make any effort to collect money. He doesn’t speak or listen to anything. My other two sons travel around. They meet the Sangat outside and take their money. When they need to feed the Sangat, they send them to us. They send their men and surround our Sangat. They take their money. They make the effort to take the money from the Sangat by saying: “I am the eldest son of the Guru; therefore, I am the Guru.” When the Sangat hears this, they give them the money. It never reaches the True Guru. The Sangat doesn’t know the truth. They don’t let them come here. They scare and threaten them, taking their money. Sri Arjan Dev sits at home and does the Simran of Hari all the time. Once in a while a Sikh or two will come to meet him. The other two brothers don’t give us any money. They cheat and lie to take the money from others. They don’t consider their younger brother. They look down upon him. Otherwise they would share the money with him. For this reason, we are always in need of food and clothes. You are dear to me. I would make good food for you but I can’t. You came after a long time. I know how to serve people but I have nothing to feed you. The expenses of the Guru’s house are a lot but we have no income. You are my dear brother, that’s why I have told you the whole story. I’ve told you everything.”
2-28 Bhai Gurdas ji encourages the Sangat
After listening to his sister/cousin Bibi Bhaani ji’s words, Bhai Gurdas ji began to strategize: “this is wrong what is happening. Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji is very calm. He is the form of peace. He doesn’t say anything to anyone and stays in his bliss. Prithi Chand takes all the money by deception and fraud. He takes the Guru’s Sangat by saying that he is the true Guru, being the eldest son of Guru Ramdas ji. This is not good. When a Sikh really needs the Guru to complete their task, their wishes will not be fulfilled. They will be in trouble in this world. When they will ask for sons and money, they will not receive anything. Prithi Chand will not be able to do anything for them. The Sikhs will lose faith and will not worship the Guru’s house anymore. There will be a loss for Sikhi. People will lose faith. This game of theirs needs to stop. If Guru ji stays hidden, how will anyone know who the true Guru is?” In this way Bhai Gurdas ji thought to himself. He stayed in Guru ka Chak with Guru Arjan Dev ji. He saw the bad intentions of both Guru ji’s brothers. The brothers were jealous of Guru Arjan Dev ji’s greatness. They took the money from the Sangat.
One day, Bhai Gurdas ji said to Guru Arjan Dev ji: “you have received the status of Guru, but your brothers are the ones being worshiped. They are getting people to worship them. This can’t go on. You are not saying anything. The light of the Guru is inside you and you are being ignored. You need to reveal yourself, just as the Gurus before you. It is not right to hide the Gurta Ghaddi like this. Sikhi needs to be grown in the world. You have powers. You need to used them to collect the money. There is Sangat everywhere. I have another issue, all three of your brothers are living in the same area but the money of the Sangat is not coming to you. It is going to them. You have no money. There is poverty in your home. Sri Guru Ramdas ji, Bhagwant ji, commanded you to do the Kar of Sri Amritsar Sahib by making the steps around it, permanent. If you stay like this, how will the Sarovar be completed? It takes a lot of money to make a Sarovar. It will cost thousands. How will it be done? You need to make an effort and show yourself to the world. There is no other brother better than “effort” itself.” Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji heard him and said: “my brothers have desire in their hearts. They run after money. They run and stop the Sangat to take the money from them. They are not content with what they have. They lie and cheat. They have greed and jealousy in their heart. I didn’t take the Gurta Ghaddi for money. Desire is destructive to the mind. If I become like my brothers, what would be the difference? We need to destroy our vices. Money and greed are the root of the vices. I need to destroy the vices in the hearts of the Sikhs. If I become like my brothers, everything would be reversed. The task of the Sarovar will be handled by Guru Nanak Dev ji. He is preparing for it, day and night. If you wish to do a good thing, then start the Seva of the Sarovar to save the Sikhs. Do the Seva with determination. Guru Bhagavan will be by your side and assist you throughout.” Bhai Gurdas ji heard Guru ji’s words and thought to himself: “what he has said is true. He can’t do as his brothers are doing because he has to clean the minds of the Sikhs from their vices. The Guru can’t act like people with desires. The Guru has to think of the Sikhs. I would need to make an effort and do something for the whole world. I need to preach the traditions of the Guru and show the Sangat who the real Guru is.” Bhai Gurdas ji thought about this as he lived with Guru Arjan Dev ji.
Some days passed and Bhai Gurdas ji continued to observe Prithi Chand and Mahadev. The two brothers were taking the money of the Sangat. One day, he heard from some of the Sikhs that a lot of Sangat was coming, at a distance, to meet Guru Arjan Dev ji. They were coming from a far away place. Bhai Gurdas ji thought to himself: “if we stay seated, nobody will end up coming here.” Bhai Gurdas ji took 2 or 3 Sikhs and slipped away without telling anyone. He went away from the city of Guru Ramdas ji about 15 km away. He made a platform there and laid out a white cloth. He made that place into a worshiping place. He sat crossed-legged down beside the platform. He made a Chaur out of peacock feathers and set up other symbols of the Guru. The Sangat had to cross this area to go see Guru ji. They saw the platform and began to inquire, as it seemed like a special and historical place: “what is this place?” Bhai Gurdas ji told the Sangat to sit down near the platform. He respectfully had them seated near the platform: “rest here.” In a little while, the entire Sangat that was travelling gathered and sat down there. Bhai Gurdas ji then spoke in a loving voice: “those of you who have brought gifts for the Guru, and wish to meet the Guru with faith and devotion, place the gifts here and then go the see Guru Arjan Dev ji. I will tell you the reason why you are to do this, then you can do as you wish. Guru Ramdas ji had three sons but the Gurta Ghaddi was given to the youngest. He is completely calm and serene. He sits in his bliss and does not say anything to anyone. His two older brothers lie and cheat to take the gifts and money from the Sangat. If the Sikhs refuse to give them money, then the two brothers swear and curse them. They are greedy people who snatch the money from the Sangat. They don’t let the gifts and money reach Guru Arjan Dev ji. They take the money with force. For this reason, I am collecting the gifts here, so the true Guru actually gets it.” The Sangat heard Bhai Gurdas ji’s words and believed him. They said: “yes this is good.” The Sangat placed their money at that place and then they headed towards Guru Arjan Dev ji’s place. Bhai Gurdas ji gave the Sangat hope and walked with the Sangat towards Guru Arjan Dev ji’s home.
Bhai Gurdas ji came quicker to Guru ji and bowed. Bhai Gurdas ji placed the money, which was 500 Rupees, and said: “please accept this from the Sangat.” Prithi Chand found out about the Sangat coming and sent his servants to bring them to him: “the Sikhs do not know the truth. Bring them here. Tell them to come to the eldest son of Guru Ramdas ji.” Mahadev sent his servants as well: “gather them and bring them to my home.” The servants surrounded the Sangat and did not let them go on ahead. The servants wanted to take them to their leaders. The Sangat already knew the truth, as they heard it from Bhai Gurdas ji. They said to the servants: “whatever money and gifts we brought for Guru ji, Bhai Gurdas ji already took it all from us. All we have left now is the wish to see Guru ji. We will now go and meet him, as per Guru ji’s will.” The servants heard this and scolded them: “why did you give him the money of the Guru? The Gurta Ghaddi is with Guru Ramdas ji’s elder son, whom everyone worships. Your money and gifts will not be accepted as you have given in to the younger brother instead of the older one. What is done, is done now. Don’t do this again. Come to Baba Prithi Chand first and don’t listen to anyone else.” In this way they praised their own leader and scolded the Sikhs. As they saw that the Sangat had no money, they let them go.
The Sangat then came to Guru Arjan Dev ji. They met him and were in total bliss. Their wishes were all fulfilled and they knew the greatness of the Satguru. They saw the still form of Guru Arjan Dev ji, that was calm and still. The light could be seen radiating from his face. His face was radiant with humility. He was the provider and giver of all. His words were sweet and beautiful like Amrit. He had not an ounce of desire or jealousy. His words would give the Sangat Mukti. The Sangat was fully convinced that this was the true Guru. They said: “this is the true Guru. The other brothers are greedy for money. Satguru Ramdas ji, the gracious one, has placed him on his throne as the next Guru. The other two are cheating the other Sikhs. They take them to their own homes for the money. They have no virtue or power to bless anyone. They only care about taking money from the Sikhs. Guru Arjan Dev ji is not like his brothers. He is the form of the Sri Satguru, the deliverer.” The Sikhs were given great respect by Guru Arjan Dev ji. Guru ji met everyone. From the money, grains and other foods were brought to make Langar for everyone. The traditions of the Guru’s house were all fulfilled and the Sikhs received Siropas as well. They then went back to their homes and sang the praises of Guru ji. Wherever the Sikhs met each other, they would say: “the Guru is Guru Arjan Dev ji.” They would tell others of the glory of Guru Arjan Dev ji. The praises of the glory of Guru Arjan Dev ji spread throughout the other regions and lands. It spread like the existence of the moon. The Sangat came to Guru Arjan Dev ji and did their Ardaas, with their hands folded.
2-29 Prithi Chand, Mahadev and Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji meet
As Bhai Gurdas ji made the effort to bring the Sangat and their gifts, food and money came which brought happiness to the home. Langar began to be made continuously now and Sikhs began to live with Guru Arjan Dev ji, with love. Bhai Gurdas ji began to live with Guru ji as well. When they would find out about Sangat heading towards Guru ji, Bhai Gurdas ji would go out ahead and direct them to the true Guru. He would make sure that they were convinced that Guru Arjan Dev ji was the true Guru. He would collect the money and gifts before hand, so they wouldn’t get stalked by Prithi Chand’s or Mahadev’s men. He would strategize and use many types of efforts in bringing the money back to Guru ji. Bhai Gurdas ji said to them that: “you would be in bliss if you would go to Guru Arjan Dev ji.” They all came to Guru Arjan Dev ji. The money began to collect and was used for the Langar and the Seva of the Sangat. The court began to be held in its glory.
Prithi Chand and Mahadev no longer had anybody visiting them. They no longer had money collecting. They cursed Bhai Gurdas ji: “this disturber of the Guru should die. He is Guru Arjan’s Mamma as well as ours. If he calls himself a Sikh, then he should serve the Guru like a servant. The three of us are the sons of the Satguru. I am the eldest. If he doesn’t see me as the eldest, then he should treat all three of us as equals. He is the pain-giver of the Guru. He is taking the money from our hands and giving it to the youngest brother.” When Bhai Gurdas ji would pass Prithi Chand, Prithi Chand would speak out loud and say: “look at this fool! Where did he come from and take ownership of things?” Bhai Gurdas ji heard him and approached Prithi Chand. He folded his hands and said: “if I am doing something wrong, then, may I suffer from your curses. If I am doing something for my own greed, may I be in pain. Whatever I am doing, if I am doing the right thing, it doesn’t matter what you say, nothing will happen to me. Your curses will have no effect on me if I am doing the right thing. Whoever receives what is rightfully his, and if another person comes to stop him, then that person is a sinner. If I am making an effort for the true Guru to get what his rightfully his, this makes the Satguru happy. Your words are useless. I have done nothing wrong.” After this, the two brothers stopped saying bad things to Bhai Gurdas ji. Bhai Gurdas ji made sure that all the Sangat from every direction was coming to Guru Arjan Dev ji. He made sure the money came to the Guru. The two brothers were in pain, as they did not have any money. They said to each other: “without income, we will be poor. We will need to make an effort. The Sangat knows about everything now. They don’t give us the money. They come to worship the feet of Guru Arjan Dev ji. They are not convinced to believe anyone else as the Guru.” Their efforts were useless. Without money, they regretted their actions. They thought of one more effort: “we won’t be able to do anything here. We should go to other lands without informing anyone. We can preach there and gather Sangat. We will take their money for worshipping. We will meet them once a year to collect the money. That Sangat will be far. Whatever we tell them, they will believe. They will see us as the sons of the Guru and worship us.” They thought of this and made preparations to go. They didn’t tell anyone of their plans. They mounted their horses and left. They only had greed in their minds.
Bhai Gurdas ji found out about Prithi Chand and Mahadev leaving. He found out about their intentions of collecting money from the Sangat from far away. Bhai Gurdas ji had Hukamnamas issued and sent to the Sangats living in far away lands. Bhai Gurdas ji sent the Hukamnamas and then travelled himself to the lands to tell them personally: “nobody is to give their money to these two brothers. They have not been commissioned by the Guru for any Seva. Whoever calls themselves a Sikh of the Guru, they should send their Dasvand to Guru Arjan Dev ji.” As the brothers began to collect some money, the letters of Bhai Gurdas ji had reached. The Sangat found out about Guru Ramdas ji kicking out Prithi Chand. The Sangat came to know and then they stopped giving them money. From that point, they didn’t get any more money from any other city. They felt bad about not receiving the money anymore. Bhai Gurdas ji followed them and then collected the money to take back to Guru Arjan Dev ji. Bhai Gurdas ji gathered the Sangat as well, and took them to visit the master of the universe, Guru Arjan Dev ji.
Prithi Chand and Mahadev came back to Amritsar. They caused a big fight in the Guru’s home. They said: “when we go to collect money for our living, this “cursed by the Guru” of a person doesn’t let us collect the money. He should have died in Agra. He shouldn’t be here. If he would have been there, we would have collected money and made a living. How should we make a living? Everyone gives you the money. We are the sons of the same father that you are, think about our living. This is not good. We will go to the Badshah and ask for justice.” Guru Arjan Dev ji had a lot of people visiting him. Bhai Gurdas ji and others spoke: “give them something, Guru ji.” The both sides tried to come to an agreement to stop the problem that Prithi Chand started. As some of the shops had their taxes coming in, the taxes from the shops of Paseea Chownk were decided to be given to Mahadev and Prithi Chand. They were given the right to the taxes of those shops. Guru Arjan Dev ji set up income for his brothers well. In this way, they began to make good money for their living. The money from the Sangat stayed with Guru Arjan Dev ji. In this way, the Guru Ghar was running well and the three brothers were on better terms with each other. They all lived in the city of Guru Ramdas ji. Prithi Chand still was jealous but didn’t show it anymore. Guru Arjan Dev ji was very calm. He had no enmity or jealousy in his mind. Prithi Chand still did bad things but Guru ji didn’t pay any attention to him. Satguru ji met everyone with love. He didn’t have any rivalry with his brothers.
Time passed in this way and Prithi Chand had a son born to him who was named “Meharvaan.” There was a celebration that brought happiness to all. After a few months, Meharvaan was brought to Guru Arjan ji. Guru ji took him in his lap and loved him dearly. He would play with him and was treat him like a son. Guru ji was calm-natured and had well wishes for all. Guru ji loved the child a lot. If he would miss a day to come to him, Guru ji would send someone to bring him. After a year, Meharvaan grew. He would come to Guru ji and play. Guru ji would have him sit in his lap and give him gold jewellery. He would give him expensive clothes with gold borders. He saw him as his own son. Prithi Chand would see this and say to his wife: “it is not long till all the things that Sri Arjan owns; we will have it all. We will become the owners of everything. He has no son of his own. The Gurta Ghaddi will come to our son. He loves our son and gives him gold and clothes. When Guru Arjan Dev ji’s body is no more, our son will be the Guru. We will be worshiped. The Gurta Ghaddi will come to us and our family will grow and prosper.” Prithi Chand would have bad intentions and be happy with his son. He did not know the ways of the Prabhoo Parmeshwar. A person thinks of something but Akaal Purakh has something else planned.
2-30 Bhai Kalyana goes to the Raja of Mandi
Guru Arjan Dev ji would always think about his father, Guru Ramdas ji’s words: “make the Sri Amritsar Sarovar. Collect money to build it.” One day, Guru Arjan Dev ji was sitting in his court and spoke to everyone: “every Sikh should be gracious. They should serve everyone else. There is no other better deed than this. If a Sikh does favors for others, they are always in bliss. There are many types of good deeds that good people do: the best is to dig a well, which gives peace to many. There is one thing better than that, which is to make a Sarovar. People, animals and birds benefit from it as they don’t have to pull the water from the well. The Teerath is the best deed which has a Sarovar with steps around it. People can come and bathe in the Sarovar, give donations, do Langar; that is the best deed. One gets the best rewards for this. The best Teerath is where the Guru has set his feet. The Guru of all Gurus is Guru Nanak Dev ji. His words are like a lion, which kills the deer of ignorance. My father had sat on that throne. Listen to the words of my father: “this Teerath is a very ancient place. Many saints and Avatars have done Tapasya here. Guru Nanak Dev ji has set foot here. Guru Angad Dev ji and Guru Amardas ji have both passed through here. There will be a time when Akaal Purakh will live here all the time. All the Devatas will live here and bow to the court of Hari Akaal Purakh. Satsangat will occur here. This place is very special and there will be no place equal to it.” This is where I wish to make the Teerath, the King of all Teeraths. Money is required to do its Seva. Rajas have that kind of money to make a Sarovar. Listen, Sikhs of the Guru: there is a Hindu King in the mountains. There is no other king with us. Is there a Sikh amongst you, who has full faith in the Guru, that can go the Rajas in the Pahari areas and collect money? The Guru will assist him. Everyone will bow to that Sikh. The Sikh has to have faith.” The Sikhs folded their hands and said: “Guru ji, the Paharis are unfamiliar with Sikhi. How will they give money for the Guru’s tasks if they don’t know about the Guru’s glory? They haven’t seen the power of the Guru. Why would they give money? How would they bow and worship the Guru, till they don’t know? Those people are idol and stone worshippers. They listen to the Pandits and only give money to them.” Guru ji then spoke to the Sikhs: “whoever makes an effort to do the Seva for the Sarovar, Guru Ramdas ji will help them. That person will be given greatness in both worlds. Wherever such a task arises, Guru ji will help.” Guru ji spoke to the court. In the court was a person named Kalyana. He folded his hands and spoke: “Prabhoo ji, if it is your command, I am your servant and I am ready to go. Please assist me in every way. You are going to do the task. I am a mere excuse. I will do the work by your faith and come back.”
Saying this, Bhai Kalyana was ready to go preach Sikhi to the Pahari Rajas. He got Guru ji’s permission. He bowed to Guru ji and headed north, towards the mountains. He thought of Guru ji and entered the area of Mandi first, near the Beas River. He saw the city and camped. He rested the night and thought about many things. He wondered how he would do everything: “how will the Raja believe in the Guru? How will he give money? The Sarovar can only be made beautiful if we have money. This is a great task for humanity. I came here but the Guru will have to make this successful.” He stayed there for 2 days but could not meet the Raja. The day of Janmashtami (Birthday of Sri Krishan ji) came, and the whole city was keeping a fast. Nobody ate food. It was the command of the Raja to fast on this day: “it is the fast of the Thakur. Everyone come and see the Salagrama. Take the Amrit of the feet of the Salagrama to break your fast. Do Simran of Krishan Krishan.” The people of the city did not eat. They stayed awake all night to do Keertan. There was a great celebration during the time of the Birthday.
It was morning and the people lined up at the Mandir. They all took the Amrit and broke their fast. Bhai Kalyana didn’t follow the traditions. He didn’t fast nor did he go to the Mandir. He didn’t take the Charanamrit. He bathed at Amritvela and recited the Bani of the Guru. He ate once a day and so he ate his food. He had faith in the Guru and did the Simran of Guru ji. The people around him saw him and asked him: “did you not keep a fast? You didn’t go to the Mandir to take the Charanamrit.” Bhai Kalyana replied to them with love: “my Thakur is awake and exists everywhere. Whoever talks to him, that person is in bliss. You worship stones, which are not alive. It does not eat nor does it talk. It does not know happiness or sorrow. You keep a fast once a year but your vices are never harnessed. Your desires never take a fast. The Sikhs of my Guru eat less and sleep less. They keep desire and anger in check. They do Simran of Akaal Purakh all the time.” The people heard him and laughed at him. They doubted his words: “this fool does not know anything. He slanders the Salagrama and calls it a stone. He thinks he is the Bhagavan and equal to the Salagrama. He does not know its glory.” The people spread the news about him. Some trouble-makers snitched on him and told the Raja: “a foreign person is here. He is Hindu but does not follow the traditions. He doubts the Salagrama and says “it’s a stone.” He does not keep a fast. He recites “Guru Guru” all day. He did not follow your command. He spoke to everyone without fear. He thinks he has Mukti on his palm.” The Raja heard this and was angry. He said: “bring him to me. What type of backwards wisdom does he have? Who is his Guru? He does not believe in the Thakur.” One person called Bhai Kalyana and took him to the Raja.
Bhai Kalyana walked fearlessly towards the Raja’s court and sat down. The court was in session. The Raja looked towards Bhai Kalyana with anger and said: “oh man, where are you from? Which Guru gave you this wisdom? Which Dharam do you believe in?” Bhai Kalyana replied by telling him everything: “Sri Nanak is the Guru of the world. His throne is occupied by Guru Arjan Dev ji, the complete. We are his Sikhs. He gives us what we ask for. He gives wisdom to both worlds. We read his Bani and take wisdom from it. We do not believe in stones or worship them. Stones do not see, hear or eat anything. They do not speak either. How can they be happy and grant you gifts? They can’t do anything for themselves. What can they do for you? We believe in the force that gives life to the world. The one that makes everything alive; the one that gives everyone, everything. You think that the stone is Akaal Purakh. Just as the king of the world coming to a fool’s home; the fool respects him by placing grass for him and calls him a “Miya” (sir). Think about what you are doing. You made Akaal Purakh into a small stone. A lifeless stone. Akaal Purakh is Ram, that resides in all life and exists in every dimension. Akaal Purakh is in lifeless matter and is in every state of time and dimension. There is no one greater than Akal Purakh. There is none equal to Akaal Purakh. You see Akaal Purakh in a small stone. Why would Akaal Purakh be happy with you? Our Guru is the awakened one, and is with us all the time. Worship the Guru who gives you wisdom of Akaal Purakh.”
