12-56 Living in Lakhnaur, Bheekhan Shah comes for a Visit

While Guru Gobind Singh ji and the mothers were living in Lakhnaur, there were no other servants with them.  Only Jetha Masand was serving them.  Bhai Jetha was serving them as he would serve the Guru.  A Brahman would come everyday to cook food.  He would prepare 2 meals a day.  Guru Sahib would play with the children of the merchants all day long, just outside of the village.  He would hold two sticks to play Khido Khundi (game similar to hockey, played with a stick and ball).  He would hit the Khido (ball) far with the Khundi (stick) and the kids would run after it.  They would climb trees and jump, practicing jumping from heights.  The kid that would lose would be blind folded.  Sometimes they would play tag and Guru Sahib would run real fast.  He would never get caught.  Sometimes they would make two teams and play competitive games.  They would play games that were prevalent with winning or losing like kabaddi.  Some kids would run fast.  Some kids would get into arguments and go home.  Some kids would escape the grapples of the opponents.  One kid would tease another.  People from the village would come to see them and say: “this child seems like the son of a Kshatriya.  He has been here for the past few days.”  The kids would enjoy playing with Guru ji.  Guru ji would be immersed in playing all day long and the mothers would call him home.  Mata Gujri would call him and feed him.

Mataji would say: “you should stay home.  You are out all the time.”  Guru ji wouldn’t listen though, and go out to play anyways.  He would call the other kids to play as well.  The kids would call Guru ji as well.  The kids loved Guru ji and would play many games.

Bheekhan Shah, who visited Guru Sahib when he was 3 months old in Patna, lived in the nearby village.  The holy site of Prithoodak, now know as Pahooaa, where the Sarasvati River shore is, was where the Peer lived.  Bheekhan Shah lived in the village Siyana which was about 9 km away from Pahooaa.  He would alternate from Siyana to Kudaam when he felt like it.  He was immersed in his meditation of Khuddah all day long.  Bheekhan Shah was given a village named Tuska by the Mughals.  Bheekhan Shah wanted Guru ji to bless his village so that when the Khalsa Raj would come, his village would remain with his heirs.  He saw the future and so wanted to make sure the Khalsa would not attack that village.  He knew that Guru Gobind Singh ji would be the Master wielder of the Degh and Tegh.  He figured it would be a good time to visit Guru Sahib, now that he was close by.  He took another Peer along and went to visit Guru Sahib.

He soon reached the place where Guru Sahib was playing with the kids.  Guru Sahib had a stick in his hands.  This is where Gurduara Mardo Sahib is now located, where Bheekhan Shah met Guru ji.  There were a lot of kids around Guru Sahib and Bheekhan Shah was hesitant to see Guru ji.  Guru Sahib hit the Khido hard and all the kids went to fetch it.  Bheekhan Shah got his chance.  He came towards Guru ji and grabbed his feet.  He bowed to his feet and stood up with his hands folded.  Bheekhan Shah began to praise Guru ji and spoke: “I am very fortunate that I have been able to see you today.  You are the blesser of the poor.”  In the meantime, the rest of the kids came back and Bheekhan Shah stopped talking.  He realised that this won’t work.  He thought quickly and picked up Guru Sahib.  He told the other kids to stay there as he will return soon.  He took Guru Sahib a few metres away till he was alone with him and set him down.  He wiped the Guru’s feet with his clothes and began to speak: “the Emperor of Delhi is a tyrant.  Your father went on his own will and is now sitting in the Emperor’s jail.  Nobody can understand his doing, as he is all-powerful and does as he pleases.  The world cannot understand the work of the Guru.”  Guru ji recognized the Peer as a powerful one who had love and devotion for the Guru.  Guru ji knew why he was here and began to address the issue: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji had blessed Babar with this great gift and now, his descendent has fallen prey to his own ego.  He is stubborn and is determined to invoke the Shariya on everyone.  He has killed Hindus and Muslims and wants to change the traditions of the land.  My father is gone to give his head so the kingdom will lose its grip on the land.  My father will pull his roots from this land.  I will create a new way, one that will be filled with the motivation and knowledge to run a kingdom.  The followers of this path will be kings amongst human.  They will rule the land and keep weapons.  For this reason, the Satguru is gone to Delhi, recognizing the limited days of his body.”  Bheekhan Shah heard the Guru’s words and folded his hands.  He made a request to Guru ji: “I place a humble request at your feet Guru ji: when the rule of law comes into the hands of your new religion, please leave my land intact and under my care.  This ardaas has resided in my heart for a long time, please accept my plea.”  Guru ji heard his plea and spoke: “your Langar will be continuous for a very long time.  Your land will not be annexed by the Singhs.  Whoever tries to harm your land, that person will not survive.  The Singhs will come to your place with friendship and you will meet each other with love.  Your wish is granted.”  Bheekhan Shah was extremely happy to be blessed this gift.  He got exactly what he had asked for.  He talked for a while and kept cleaning the dirt from Guru ji’s clothes in a loving manner.  He picked up Guru ji and brought him back to where the other kids were playing.  He kept massaging Guru ji’s feet as these were the feet that save many.  Bheekhan Shah bowed at Guru ji’s feet and returned to his village.  He kept the memory of Guru ji’s feet in his heart and was extremely happy to receive what he had asked for.

Along with Bheekhan Shah, there was another Peer who accompanied him on his travel.  His name was Meer Deen.  We was not a full Bhrahmgyaani but was powerful as well.  He saw the whole event.  He was a little doubtful and thought that Bheekhan Shah had sinned by bowing to a Hindu child.  This was not what Muslims do.  Muslims only bow to Allah.  As he walked back to their village, he asked Bheekhan Shah: “Peer ji, I consider you a very powerful Peer.  You have a great status amongst all Muslims.  They recognize you as a very spiritual person.  Why have you bowed to a Hindu child today?  They do not know who Allah is?  You saw him and bowed to him.  You are a Muslim and you are older than him.  You are a Syed (an honorific title for descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad).”  Bheekhan Shah responded: “Meer Deen, don’t consider that child a “child.”  He is the heir to Guru Nanak’s throne.  Whoever is the heir to that throne, is Khuddah.  When all the Peers come to the court of Khuddah, they all stand in the court.  This child then shows himself to everyone.  He listens to all the prayers of the Peers.  All the Peers present their pleas to him.  Nobody can meet or see Khuddah but this is the child that we see.  We do not know if this is Allah or not, but he is the one that listens to our prayers.  This body that he has incarnated, this is just to show the world.  In the court of Khuddah, he visits all the Peers.  I have witnessed this myself.  He listens to both Hindus and Muslims.  He protects everyone.  He also granted my wish that I asked for today.  When he grows up, he will wage war on the Mughals and will finish them.  Delhi and Lahore will lose their power.  The current kings that see themselves as mountains, they will be reduced to dust.  I asked him to protect my land when his followers rule the land.  He blessed me and promised me that I will be stable.”  Bheekhan Shah thus told Meer deen the whole story.

Kavi Santokh Singh ji says that his village was close by in Kaithal which is about 30 km away for Bheva.  Bheekhan Shah’s area was protected.  All around his area were areas occupied by the Sikh Sardars.  Kurukshetra, Ambala (Misl Nishana, Daya Kaur), Kaithal (Maharaja Udhay Singh), Patiala (Maharaja Karam Singh).  Tuska was protected and was free to follow their religion.  Bheekhan Shah’s student served Langar there.  None of the Sikhs attacked him.  Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji’s words are unstoppable.  The Sangat should meditate on Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji, who will protect everyone in both worlds.

12-57 The Fresh Water Well in Lakhnaur, Mammaji Comes

Kavi Santokh Singh ji states more history from Lakhnaur.  Guru Gobind Singh ji was getting bigger and stronger, the Guru, the Master of the Universe.  There was a village named Nunari, where a Masand named Ghogha lived.  When Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji went on his travels to the holy sites, Ghogha became a Sikh while meeting Guru ji.  He accompanied Guru ji for a while.  Although he was a Sikh, the karma of his previous births brought greed in his mind.  Mata Gujri ji had a lady-maid that stayed with her and served her.  Ghogha pursued a love interest with the lady-maid and ran away with her.  He then later regretted his actions when Guru Ji came to Lakhnaur.  Ghogha wanted to ask Guru Gobind Singh for forgiveness.  Guru Gobind Singh ji was playing with his friends, Ghogha came from Nunari and folded his hands and asked for forgiveness: “I am a Masand of the Guru’s house.  You have come to Lakhnaur.  I don’t think this is a good place to stay, as it is not fit for your status.  The house you are staying in is small, with small roofs and small balconies.  Lakhnaur is not fit for you.  Please come to my house in my village.  I have a bigger house and it is close to a river.”  Guru ji heard his words and said: “Ghogha ji, we will see what type of love you have.  I can’t go without any mode to travel.  My horse is about to arrive, we can go once it arrives.”  Ghogha would come to Guru ji many times and make the same request.  Each time, Guru Sahib would say the same thing about his horses not arriving yet.  Ghogha would not come in front of Mata Gujri ji so he doesn’t get recognized.  He wanted to take Guru ji to wash his sins.

Guru ji told his mother: “Mata ji, there is a Masand that approaches me and asks me to come to his home.  He says his house is bigger with a big yard.  His house is painted with big balconies.”  Mata Gujri ji did not know who the Masand was.  She said: “it is not right to go at this point.”  Many days passed like this.

The water of Lakhnaur was not fresh.  Guru ji drank that water many times and would complain to his mother each time: “the water here is salty and does not taste good.  There is no fresh water here.”  Mata Gujri ji would worry about this: “I hope we don’t have to go somewhere else because of this.”  She asked Jetha Masand: “is there a fresh water well any where around here?  The Sahibzada does not like the water here.  None of us like it, actually.”  Jetha folded his hands and requested Mataji: “Mataji, if you would kindly bless us with your holy words, our wells would become fresh.  None of the wells in this region are fresh.  Many people complain about this.”  Mata Gujri ji was worried that this was a concern of this area.  The people of the village drink the salty water as there was nothing else they could do.  She said to Jetha: “go and call the elders of this village.”  In a little while, all the leaders and elders gathered at Jetha’s house.  They came to see Mataji for her blessing.  Mataji came outside to see everyone and began to walk around the area.  She had a stick in her hand and was making plans in her head and talking to herself, waving the stick around.   She came across a small piece of land and pointed to it with her stick and said: “here.  Here is where a fresh water well should be dug.  The water from this well will be enjoyed by all men and women.  Start digging for the well here.”  The elders heard Mataji and folded their hands: “Mataji, we have faith in your words.  We are sure the water will be fresh.  This will be great for the villagers.  Mataji, we know the water will be fresh but we are poor.  When we harvest our crops, we are able to sell them and then pay for the well.  Otherwise, we have no money to dig the well.  There are few homes in this area and we are not able to save such an amount to afford such labour.  What can we do Mataji?”  Mataji heard the elders’ dilemma and felt sorry for them.  She was filled with love and charity and so she spoke: “there used to be a well here, a long, long time ago.  During previous yugas, there was a well, but because of wars and other disasters, the well got filled with dirt and soil.  You will only need to use your hands.  I tagged the area.  Just use whatever tools you have.  The well will come out.  Do it as quickly as possible and live in peace.  Give my son, Guru Gobind Singh ji, the first drink of water from this well.  Prepare the Karah Prashaad and pray to Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Guru Nanak Dev ji will be your guide.  All of the obstacles will go away.  Saying the name of Guru Nanak Dev ji will grant you many blessings.”  Everyone heard Mataji’s words and said: “Mata ji is great.  She said it will happen without money.”  Some were with faith and began to prepare right away.  They prepared Panchamrit Karah Prashaad and did Ardaas to Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Everyone then began to dig.  They pulled a lot of dirt out.  As they reached a depth of about 6 or 7 feet, they saw the structure of an old well.  Everyone was happy and their motivation grew.  Soon enough, the whole village got involved and worked even harder than before.  After the third day, the well was ready, and the water began to spring out.  The water was given to Guru Gobind Singh ji first.  Guru ji drank the water and it was fresh.  The rest of the villagers drank the water and rejoiced.  They understood the power of the Guru and called it “Guru Da Khoo” or “Mata da Khoo.”  The well is still there and people still drink out of it.  Giani Sher Singh ji of Ambala has had water from that well.  There is definitely Mataji’s blessings in that water.  As one drinks that water, Mataji’s energy can be felt.

Guru ji was waiting for Mama Kirpal Chand ji: “when will Mammaji come from Anandpur and bring the horses and weapons?  I can then go hunting and travel the villages around here.  I can ride my horse and scope the area and make the horse jump around.”  Guru ji would ask the mothers repeatedly: “when will Mammaji come?”  Guru ji would count the days.  He was waiting for the horses, hawks and weapons.  “Your Mammaji is on his way.  He is preparing Shasters for you and nice clothes.  He will bring the best breed of horses and hawks for you.  He is going to bring you royal clothes.  He will be here in a few days.”

The day finally came when Mamma Kirpal Change ji arrived. Mammaji reached Lakhnaur and brought the best of the best.  Mammaji got off his horse and bowed to his nephew at his feet.  He recognized the greatness and power of the Guru inside Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Mamma Kirpal Chand ji then bowed to the mother of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and his own sister.  Guru Gobind Singh ji hugged his uncle tightly as it had been a while since he had last seen him.  He asked about Anandpur: “Pithaji has commanded all of us to go to Anandpur.  We will leave in a few days.  We have called you for this reason and were waiting for you.  I wish to go to Anandpur quickly as I have a pull towards the earth there.”  Mamma ji said to Guru ji: “the elder and great Guru works by his own wishes.  He has left Anandpur and is in the jail of the Mughal Emperor.  Nauranga is a sinner and a fool.  He is a tyrant.  He hates the Saints of Akaal Purakh and oppresses them.  Satguru ji did not reveal his plan to any of us.  He left Anandpur with five Sikhs all of a sudden and left for Agra.  If the Mughal King was planning a bad strategy, then the Sikhs of Jungle Desh (Malva) would have helped Guru ji.  We don’t know why he went to Agra.  The Mughal army would not have come to Jungle Desh as water is scarce there.  They wouldn’t have come there for this reason.  He could have lived amongst his Sikhs with peace.  We don’t know what he is up to and why he has gone to the enemy.  He is in his custody now.”  Guru Gobind Singh ji heard his uncle’s words and said: “Mammaji, my father is Parameshver Akaal Purakh.  No body can advise him on anything.  Whatever he does, will be good.  We should not worry about him.  You and I should not think about anything.  We should accept his will and his command.  Whatever Akaal Purakh has planned, we should accept it, and live our life.  Whatever is to happen, will happen and has been determined by Pithaji himself.  He is complete and all-powerful and is above time.  He knows past, present and future.  The best thing to do is to accept and follow his command.  We should accept his will with peace.  I only wish to see what his wish is.  We should ask for his blessings.  Smart people should not question the doings of the all-powerful.  Smart people do not doubt.  Understand this and do not worry.  Whatever the Guru has said, keep that in your heart.”  Guru ji was advising both the mothers and Mamma Kirpal Chand ji.  Mataji and Mammaji heard Guru ji’s word and re-kindled their faith.

Every one ate and fell asleep.  In the morning, everyone got up, bathed.  Guru ji mounted his horse.

12-58 Riding the Horse, Ghogha Masand

The saddle was made of gold with cushioning made of golden thread.  It was placed on the horse and the reins were fastened.  The horse had beautiful saaz (ornaments) on it and was dressed well.  The son of the Guru remembered the dispellers of obstacle: the Nine Gurus, and mounted his horse.  (The Nihang Singhs have a tradition to do an Ardaas to the Gurus before mounting a horse) He grabbed the reins and actioned the horse to move forward.  Kirpal Chand ji brought a hawk along for hunting.  Guru Sahib took the hawk with him, resting on his hand.  The mirshikar (leader of the hunting party) lead the way for the hunt.  Guru Sahib, in line with his grandfather’s tradition of hunting, with full royal regalia, proceeded for the hunt.  Guru ji looked very powerful with his whole hunting party.  He looked just like his grandfather.  The onlookers were amazed at the Gurus inspirational ambiance.  Their hearts blossomed seeing the Guru in this form.  The horse had a different trot and gallop today.  The ambiance, the energy was different today.  The horse was inspired and motivated.  The Guru was filled with the warrior spirit.  His face was radiant and his eyes had the spark of many suns today.  Guru ji headed north and was looking for a hunt.  Along the way, Mammaji Kirpal Chand ji and Guru ji were having conversations about hunting and animals.  Guru ji’s horse would gallop in a smooth and rapid manner.  The armed Sikhs were with Guru Sahib and followed his lead.  Three hours had passed and Guru ji returned from the hunt.  Both mothers were looking to see and waiting for Guru ji to return.  They were happy to see Guru ji on the horse.  Guru ji got off his horse and bowed to Mata Nanaki ji and went inside the house.  Mamma ji was with him as well.  Many days had passed like this.  He would go hunting on some days and on other days, he would play with his friends.

One day, Ghogha Masand returned, and wanted to take Guru ji to his home to serve him.  He wanted to be forgiven for committing an immoral act of running away with one of Mataji’s lady-maids.  He saw Guru ji one day in his hunting party going for a hunt ride.  He bowed to Guru ji and said: “Guru ji, my house is very nice for you to live.  Please see my home first and see if it will be good for the mothers.  I have made this request to you many times.  Please come to my village and come to my home.”  Guru ji heard his request.  Mammaji was with Guru Sahib and spoke to Guru ji: “Maharaj, we should go to his home one day and fulfill his wish.”  Guru ji responded and said: “ok we will go tomorrow.”

The next day Guru ji got ready and saddled his horse.  Mammaji and some armed Sikhs were with Guru ji.  They party left towards Nunari village and had Ghogha lead the way.  Guru ji, mounted his horse. Soon enough, Guru ji was standing at the entrance of the village.  The villagers came to bow to Guru Sahib.  One person in the village, who was not on good terms with Ghogha, came forward and spoke to Guru ji: “Guru ji, this Ghogha has committed a blasphemous act.”  Guru ji heard the whole story and was not pleased.  He didn’t dismount his horse and turned his horse around to face backwards towards his home.  He cursed Ghogha: “his family will be destroyed,” said Guru ji.

From that point, Guru ji headed towards Ambala, which was within the vicinity that he was staying in.  Ambala was an ancient city that had a lot of mango trees.  Guru ji came to the southern area of Ambala.  There was a garden there named “Baadhshahi Bhaag.”  Babar would stay in this garden during his time.  Guru ji saw the many types of fruit trees there.  The garden was fenced with a stone wall.  Guru ji had his hawk in his hand.  Guru ji fed his hawk.  The Qaazi of the area, Ameer Deen also came into the garden and saw Guru ji feeding his hawk.  He asked Guru ji to have his own hawk fight with Guru ji’s hawk.  Guru ji responded by saying: “what’s the use of seeing two equals fight?  Why don’t you have your small birds fight my hawk?”  Ameer Deen responded: “that won’t be fair.  Your hawk will kill my small birds.”  Guru ji replied: “ok, then your hawk can fight my small birds.”  The Qaazi quickly agreed, seeing an opportunity to win a new hawk for himself.  Guru ji went to a Jamoi tree (Gurduara Baadhshahi Bhaag) and signaled to two small birds atop the tree to attack the Qazi’s hawk.  The sparrows attacked and fought the hawk for 2 km and reached the spot where Sri Gobinpura Sahib is today, and killed the Qaazi’s hawk.  Guru ji then returned to Lakhnaur.  The gem of the Sodhis rested the night.

One day, as Guru ji went on a hunt.  He was hunting deer and reached a village named Bhusthula.  There, he stood for a while.  A Rangar Jaat from Lookhi village came to hunt.  Along with the Rangar, was a person who was from the Naaee caste (Barber/hygienist/ masseuse).  The Naaee saw Guru ji and recognized him.  He bowed to Guru Sahib.  The Rangar asked the Naaee: “who is this radiant child?  He looks like a powerful King.  He is definitely an Avatar.”  The Naaee responded: “this is our Guru ji, whom we worship.  The whole world bows at his feet.”  The Rangar then went to Guru Sahib and bowed as well.  He took 5 arrows from his quiver and offered them to Guru ji while he bowed.  Guru ji saw his devotion and said: “live in peace.”  The Rangar was really happy to receive the blessing.  He folded his hands and said: “Maharaj, the arrows are made of Damascus steel and are made with great craftsmanship.”  Guru took the arrows and appreciated them greatly.  The Rangar put his head on Guru ji’s feet and returned home.  Guru ji then returned home and rested.  Like this, Guru Sahib spent his time in Lakhnaur.

Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji’s message had finally come that told them to go to Anandpur Sahib.  Guru Gobind Singh ji said: “we need to accept Pithaji’s command and get ready.  Mataji, please give us the permission.  I do not wish to live here any more.  Let’s leave from here.  When one listens to the Guru, one not need to worry.  The Guru is complete and all-powerful.  If he didn’t want to go to the Mughals, the Mughals wouldn’t have been able to arrest him.  He could have stayed in Malva, there are many Sikhs there.  There are many ways to live in peace without the Mughals reaching him. It was is own wish to go.  I heard about the Pandits of Kashmir that came to him.  Guru ji gave them hope and told them to go to the Emperor to try to convert the Guru.  The Pandits spoke to the Emperor and that is why he came looking for Guru ji.  He wants to convert the whole country to Islam.  He sent Ahdeeyas, but Guru ji didn’t go with them.  Guru ji stayed with Saifdeen in Saifabad.  No one found him there.  Guru ji then went himself to Agra and told them that he had arrived.  He gave his diamond ring and an expensive shawl to a shepherd.  The shepherd’s doings then in turn brought the police to come and arrest Guru ji.  The police brought a whole force to the garden where Guru ji was resting.  They took Guru ji to the Laal Qila by his own wishes.  The Sikhs that were released from custody, told me the whole story.  Guru ji only knows, what he is doing.  No one can stop him from what he is doing.  We should go to Anandpur quickly.”  Both mothers were sad to hear this and began to shed tears.  They said: “oh Karta Purakh, what is this play that you are playing?  You left without seeing us.  You placed us all in trouble.  We have no power to do anything.  We are here in this small village and can’t do anything.”  Mata Nanaki ji turned to Guru Gobind Singh ji and continued: “you are not old and mature enough yet but we cannot say anything to you.  We are ordered to listen to your wishes.  We don’t want to go to Anandpur.  We are worried all the time.”  Guru ji responded: “Mataji, with the blessings of Guru ji, I am not afraid.  I am not able to hide.  For how long can we stay here?  I can’t stay away from Anandpur.  What is the use staying here in this small village?  I do not wish to stay here.  Pithaji has ordered us to go to Anandpur.  He should listen to him.  Mammaji has brought all the chariots and horses required to travel.  I don’t like it here.”  Guru ji spoke to Mataji and gave out the command himself.  He told all the servants and Sikhs to get ready the next day.  The whole village found out that Guru ji was going to leave.  He asked the villagers to take anything they needed from them.  They came and took what they required.  The horses were fed and massaged.

12-59 Lakhnaur to Kiratpur

Guru ji consoled both mothers as they were depressed.  Mamma Kirpal ji was standing near the mothers.  “My father is the most powerful and can do whatever he pleases.  He can destroy the Mughal Emperor and all his men with one word.  Guru ji’s abilities cannot be quantified, the servants of his servants have power to destroy this tyrannical kingdom.  One servant can destroy them all like fire.  Have you heard about Bhai Matidas and what he said?  The Sikhs that were with Guru ji in the jail told me all about it.  Guru ji had to stop Matidas by taking his powers away.  The Mughals then killed Matidas.  Guru ji has stated that his body’s final days are near and he wants to use his body to place the blame of his death upon the Mughal’s head.  You already know how powerful the Guru is, then why are you worrying?  In the morning, we shall send one Sikh to Delhi, and we will head for Anandpur.  The Sikh will bring back the wishes and commands of the Guru for us,” said Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Mata Nanaki then spoke: “that is a good idea.  Let’s send a Sikh to Delhi and see what Guru ji’s wishes are.”  Everyone rested the night and woke up in the last watch of the night.  They all bathed and got ready.

Guru ji made preparations for the travels.  One Sikh was sent to Delhi with the following instructions: “send Guru ji our salutations with both hands folded and ask him to write a letter for all of us.  Mata ji is feeling really sad.  Ask about his plans.  Tell Guru ji all these things.”  The Sikh took his instructions and headed towards Delhi.

Mamma Kirpal Chand ji and Guru ji planned for an appropriate time to leave.  Guru ji took a sharp-edged Kharag (type of sword) and a smaller sword to fasten onto his body.  He did an Ardaas to the Nine Gurus and asked them for their blessings and donned his weapons.  He tied a silk kumerkassa (cummerbund) around his waist.  Guru ji called for a strong horse with a solid saddle.  Guru ji circumvented the horse and bowed to it before mounting it (this tradition is still prevalent within the Nihang Dals as a sign of respect towards the horse).  He grabbed the reins and called Mamma Kirpal ji close to him.  The other Sikhs all mounted their horses or chariots and began to move.  Some people were left with the mothers to load their belongings and were given the instructions to not be late.  With an eagerness to see Anandpur, Guru ji and everyone else were on their way.  Guru ji would hunt along the way and enjoy the scenery.  In some places, Guru ji would make the horse run fast and jump over things.  He was having fun with the horse and making it do many tricks.  He would experiment with different gallops.  He would converse with Mammaji along the way.  He would release his hawk to exercise his wings.  Jetha Masand and other Sikhs that accompanied the Vaheer for some distance asked for leave.  The mothers acknowledged their seva, that they had done so lovingly, and blessed them: “live in peace and be blessed with progeny and abundance of milk (a traditional Indian blessing known as “dhudh puth”).”  They all then returned to their homes back to Lakhnaur as the mothers continued on in their chariots.  As they left, the Sikhs began to cry.  The mothers consoled them as they left.

The luggage and other baggage followed behind as they travelled and continued for most of the day.  They set up camp in the evening and prepared Langar.  Langar was served and everyone went to sleep.  They continued the next morning.  They also did many enjoyable activities as they travelled.  Wherever there were Sikhs living, they would come visit Guru ji when they would find out about their passing through the towns.  They would bring gifts, food and feed as they come.  They were in awe of the child Guru when they would see him.  His radiance was greater than the king of kings.  Guru ji was handsome, smart, clever and complete.  People couldn’t take their eyes off of him.  They just couldn’t get up to leave.  When they would go back to their homes, they couldn’t stop talking about him.  They would say: “the son of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji is destined to be the heir to the throne of the All-powerful Guru.  He is just like his grandfather, who fought wars to kill sinners.  The Emperor of Delhi feared him.  This child will definitely bring about a revolution, just like Guru Hargobind ji.  We see the power already in him at such a young age.”

Guru ji and the Vaheer passed through Ropar Naggar and continued on, stopping along the way.  The news reached Kiratpur about Guru ji’s arrival.  Everyone in the region was happy to hear of Guru ji coming there.  Baba Sooraj Mal’s two grandsons were really excited and went on ahead to greet Guru ji before entering the city.  Rich or poor, everyone came to greet the Vaheer.  When they all saw the son of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji, they all bowed to him.  Both parties asked each other how they were.  A beautiful house was ready for Guru ji’s stay.  Beds were set up for Guru ji’s resting.  Guru ji climbed upon the bed and spoke to Baba Sooraj Mal ji’s grandsons: “what are your names?  We are the same age.  We should all play together.  You should come and stay with me.”  The Mevra (Ardaasia Sikh) introduced the two children: “Sri Sooraj Mal ji was your Thayaji (elder paternal uncle) who is, unfortunately, no longer amongst us on this earth.  These are his two grandsons.  The elder is Gulab Rai and the one sitting next to you is Shyam Das.  Both are now under your protection.  Everyone is the progeny of the same Guru.”  The children all talked and rejoiced.

Both the mothers arrived next.  The wife of Baba Sooraj Mal ji went to greet the mothers.  The sisters-in-law embraced each other as they met.  Mata Gujri ji bowed to the wife of Sooraj Mal ji.  She brought both of the mothers inside the house and bowed to her mother-in-law.

They had all met after a long time and their love for each other grew.  Gourmet delicacies were prepared and served to all.  They were all happy to see everyone but were sad to hear about Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji being in the jail of Mughals.  They understood the necessity of the situation but were still worried.  Night had crept upon their happy meeting and so it was time to rest.  They all rested and woke up in the morning and got ready upon bathing.  Everyone wanted to leave, but Baba Sooraj Mal ji’s family didn’t let them leave: “we are not letting you go today.  Stay here for a while and explore the region of your elders.  Sri Har Rai ji had a great garden planted.  A lot of care is put in to that garden and park.  Let’s go see the gardens.  There are many fruit trees there.  Grandfather’s place is here too, we will visit that place and pay our respects.  Sri Gurditta ji was your Thaya as well, his place is upon a mountain which we will see as well.  The Sangat of Kiratpur also wishes to see you.”  The son of Sri Tegh Bahadhur was thus convinced to stay in Kiratpur.

12-60 Visiting the Gardens of Kiratpur, Leaving for Anandpur

Panchamrit Karah Prashaad was distributed as Guru ji came to Kiratpur.  Everyone went to go see the gardens in Kiratpur.  Thaiji, Mata Khem Kaur ji, the wife of Baba Sooraj Mal ji came along with everyone and Guru ji to see the gardens of Guru Har Rai ji.  The gardens were beautiful, with guava and peach trees.  The mango trees were very high and lush.  Jujube, falsa and banana trees were seen with irrigation lines.  Jasmine and magnolia flowers were in great quantities spreading their scents far.  Roses were blooming along with marigold, tulips, Rangoon creeper and cockscomb.  Khirni, Java Plum and blackberry, exceeded everyone’s expectation in beauty.  Lemon, grape vines, oranges, were ripe and full of flavour, seen no where else.  Fig, jackfruit, grewia, monkey jack plants were standing proudly.  They were all arranged in lines with benches and walkways between the plants.  There were irrigation lines running through the park.  Guru Gobind Singh ji was enjoying the plants and strolling through the gardens with the Sikhs.  The gardeners brought garlands of flower for Guru Sahib.  Guru ji gave the gardeners a lot of money.  The plants were so lush that there was shade everywhere.  Guru ji was impressed.

Guru ji then went to Gurduara Pataalpuri Sahib, which was the place attributed to his grandfather, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, where his cremation took place.  Panchamrit was distributed there.  The Langris brought the Prashaad atop their heads.  Guru ji visited and paid his respects at the sites of his grandfather and his cousin, Guru Har Rai Sahib ji.  Karah Prashaad was distributed to the Sangat there.  Everyone enjoyed the Prashaad to their hearts delight.  Guru ji visited the site of Baba Gurditta ji on top of the mountain.  He saw the place of his uncle, Thaya ji, and paid his respects after sitting there for a while and reciting Gurbani.  It was now afternoon, and Guru ji came back to Mata Khem Kaur ji, Thai ji, and had Langar.  Guru ji visited all the sites of Kiratpur, visiting it for the first time.  Guru ji conversed with his nephews, Gulab Rai and Shyam Das ji the whole time.  Guru ji spent the whole day visiting the whole place.  The Sangat was happy to see Guru ji.  Guru ji rested the night and woke up the next day.

Guru ji gave out the order to get ready to go to Anandpur.  The horse was saddled by the sevadaars.  The Vaheer mounted their horses and left towards Anandpur along with Mammaji and the Sikhs.  The mothers mounted their chariots and followed along.  The people of Anandpur were happy, waiting for Guru ji and assembled in a designated spot to receive Guru ji, ahead of the way.  They brought money and gifts for Guru ji and were eagerly awaiting the Guru.  They had garlands and fruit, food, and Karah Prashaad.  Sometimes, they would get up, walk around and then sit back down again, awaiting Guru ji.  When Guru ji left Kiratpur, he first reached the Sutlej and saw the clean water of the river.  He was happy to see the clear water.  The Sutlej was a “sindhgaamani” (one that emptied into the ocean).  The people of Anandpur started to walk ahead to meet Guru ji.  When they saw Guru ji, they rejoiced and bowed to his feet.  They offered their gifts and Guru ji asked everyone how their families were.  They all responded: “we are all well by your grace, Guru ji.”  Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras, were all happy to see Guru ji and brought Guru ji into the city.  Guru ji would converse with the Sikhs he just met.  The Sangat would respond to his questions with their hands folded.  The mountains were very high, touching the sky on the right ride of Guru ji.  On the left was the Sutlej, roaring away.  Guru ji eventually reached the scenically beautiful Anandpur, located amongst valleys and rolling hills and mountains.  The Naina Devi Mandir can be seen along the way.  Mamma Kirpal ji pointed to the Naina Devi Mandir and said: “this is Naina Devi, the Devi that protects everyone.  (The Shakti is attributed to the power of Akaal Purakh that is worshiped in every culture) The highest mountain is where the mandir was.”  Guru ji heard Mammaji’s words, paid his respects and bowed to the power of Akaal Purakh.  The land of Anandpur was attractive and, oh, so beautiful.  Greenery everywhere.  Trees standing tall, Guru ji saw everything and was happy.  The house that was made for Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and his family, Guru Gobind Singh ji tied his horse in front of that house.  The mothers got off their chariots and went inside the house.  The servants unloaded all the household items and unpacked the stuff.  Rice, salt, flour, sugar and ghee was brought.  Langar and Karah Prashaad was prepared.  Everyone had Langar and were satiated with the food distributed.  As they ate, they all praised the Guru.  Guru ji was settling in Anandpur and the news spread far.  Everyone began to come for visits, bringing money and gifts.  The crowd grew on a daily basis.  The Masands from different places came, bringing their Sangats.  They brought money and gifts.  Guru ji settled in Anandpur with peace.

The history now turns back to Delhi, where Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji was, in the jail of the Mughals.  Bhai Matidas ji had proceeded to the realm of the Satguru.  The Sikhs were scared.  When it was morning, the guards did not know how the three Sikhs with Guru Sahib, had escaped the jail overnight.  They counted and noticed three were gone.  All the doors were locked.  “We are surprised how did the three Sikhs leave?  We can see the empty chains though, but no people,” said the guards.  They tried to follow the tracks but were unsuccessful.  “Oh Khuddah, what have you done,” said the guards.  The jailor came and became scared.  He came to Satguru ji and said: “where have your Sikhs gone?  Tell us where they are or else the Emperor will be mad.”  Guru ji smiled and responded: “Khuddah took them.  Khuddah did not want them to be in pain, so he protected them from the jail.  They had nothing to do with me, right now.  The Emperor wants me.  I’m here still.  Not going anywhere.  Do what you want with me.  Don’t be afraid of my Sikhs and servants leaving.”

The jailor went to the Emperor and told him everything: “three Sikhs of the Guru have escaped during the night.  The doors were locked and all the guards were present and on duty.”  Aurangzeb heard the jailor and was really angry.  He yelled out: “your guards must have been bribed.  The Sikhs or Guru must have paid them and they got greedy and let them go.  I will get all of you and your guards executed if I find out that you are all involved.”  The jailor was scared.  He folded his hands and said: “we are poor and meek people.  Please forgive us.  If we are guilty, you may hang all of us along with our families.  The Guru is powerful and can leave the jail as he pleases.”  The Emperor was shocked.  He then spoke: “bring a really tight cage and have the Guru of the Hindus locked in it.  Make sure he is chained and locked.  Torture him and keep a strict guard.  I don’t want him escaping like the Sikhs.  If the Guru leaves, our dreams of spreading Islam will shatter.  Send an Umarov along with the guard.”

The Umarov went to Guru Sahib and said: “why are you being so difficult?  Why are you being so stubborn?  Listen to the Emperor, he is stubborn as well.  If you accept Islam, he will give you a great status.  Otherwise, he will keep you in a very tight cage.  He has given this order today.”  Guru ji heard the Umarov and responded: “everyone loves their religion and have the right to practice it the way they please.  I will never change my religion.  Let the Emperor do what he wants to.  I will accept everything.  The rule of the Mughals is about to come to an end.  This is your end time and that is why you are making these foolish decisions.  Your roots will by pulled and thrown into the ocean.  Your rule will be finished.”  The Umarov was very angry after hearing Guru ji’s words and called for an iron cage.  Guru ji’s hands and feet were chained and placed inside the cage.  Guru ji’s face was still calm and serene as it was before.

of the Emperor’s court were all shocked to hear that one person was in two places at the same time.  The Emperor sent two guards at the same time to see if the Guru was indeed at two places at the same time.  Both the guards reported seeing the Guru in their respectively assigned checking spots.  Some people were declaring the Guru as a person with supernatural abilities, others were developing faith for the Guru.  Nauranga became very angry and said: “why is the Guru doing this?  I hope the Guru doesn’t leave the jail?  What will we do if he leaves?  It was so hard capturing him.  Now I am determined to convert the Guru and bring him into the Shariya law.  When the Guru reads the Kalma and converts, the rest of the Hindus will convert as well, without any effort.  If the Guru converts, the Hindus will follow.  We need to hurry up and convert the Guru.”  The jailor was scolded again: “Make sure the Guru does not leave the jail again.  He left today to go eat at a Sikh’s house, make sure this does not happen again.  Keep a guard day and night with a sword and spear.  Keep threatening and scaring the Guru.  If the Guru agrees to converting, tell me right away.  Don’t trust the Guru as he may leave anytime.  If he escapes, you will be jailed.  If you are successful, you will be rewarded.”  The jailor went back to the cells and kept a strict guard.  He thought: “if Guru Sahib leaves, I will be in trouble.”  Guru Sahib was still in his cell and was in high spirits.
