12-41 Getting Ready to go to Punjab, Blessing Jagta Seth
Listening to the mother of his father, Guru Gobind Singh ji wanted to kill the Mughals, like a lion kills a deer. When Mataji praised the Sikhs and Masands of the East; calling them faithful and loving; and mentioning why they should stay in Patna, Guru Sahib had to dispel her belief. Guru Sahib wanted to go to Punjab to do his tasks. Guru Sahib had a plan. He asked to have the palanquin be placed in the middle of the house and asked for firewood. He asked for the firewood to be placed in a pile, and have the palanquin to be placed on top. He asked for fire from the Langar and lighted the firewood. As the fire burned, people were shocked to see what the Guru was doing. Guru Sahib asked the mothers to come outside. The Sikhs said: “it is strange that Guru Sahib asked for a palanquin and did not ride in it at all. Instead, he is burning such an expensive palanquin. It just came yesterday and today he is burning it.” A Sikh went to Mata Nanaki ji and said: “Mata ji, the Guru is burning the palanquin that came from Bengal.” Mata ji responded: “well, what can we do? The Guru is an Avatar and a great being. I can’t stop his command. He’s not afraid of anyone and we have to let him do what he wants. Whatever he says from his mouth, will come true.” The fire was burning wildly and turned the palanquin into ash. Guru Sahib asked the jewelers to find the metals from the ash. When the jewellers collected the metals and washed it all, they placed it in front of Guru Sahib.
Guru Sahib told them to put it in front of Mata Nanaki ji and said: “look Mata ji, you were praising Bulaaki Das. Look what he has done. He cheated the Guru and had less then 10% of the gold we asked for. He used copper instead. He took the money from the Sangat. We paid for that. We paid for the gold and labour and he didn’t use it. He keeps the money of the Sangat to himself and said that he made a palanquin made of gold. These are the type of Sikhs you are proud of? These are the types of the Sikhs in the East. Their minds are weak and their outwardly faces are fake. If this is the way their elders (the Masands) are, then what can we expect from the common people?” Mataji saw this and stayed quiet in front of him. They had nothing to say. They couldn’t say anything. Mataji knew that her grandson was the light of Guru Nanak Dev ji and knew what was inside everyone’s heart. If someone debates with him, they are sure to lose and be proven wrong. Mata Gujri ji looked towards her mother-in-law and then towards her son and said: “your father came to this area and took us to many holy sites. He then left here and went further East. We’ve been living here ever since. The Sikhs from this area have been serving us and the Langar has been running. Your father is now in Punjab and we have to wait for his command. We can’t go till he says so. We are here by his command since then and we have now been living with the people of Patna. The people have developed a deep bond with us. You have your friends here as well. Everyone brings great gifts. You were born here and then you’ve played here and you know everyone here. You are now getting stronger and growing up. Other than that, we can’t force you. We will do what you want and follow your command.”
Guru Sahib listened to his mother’s words and said: “Mata ji, the Sikhi is great in Punjab. The reason for that is because all of the Gurus were from Punjab. They established holy sites: Guru Nanak Dev ji established Kartarpur, Guru Angad Dev ji – Khadoor Sahib; Guru Amardas ji – Goindwal Sahib; Guru Ram Das ji – Amritsar Sahib; Guru Arjan Dev ji – Kartarpur Sahib Jalandhar; Guru Hargobind Sahib ji – Kiratpur Sahib; Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji – Anandpur Sahib. Grandfather, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji formed a great army there. The army was so strong that they defeated the army of the Emperor of Delhi. These people were the most loyal and faithful. Some were paid soldiers and some were just doing seva; but they all loved the Guru, dearly. The people of Bihar can’t do what the Punjabis can. They are only Sikhs for convenience. If the Guru will need them, they will let go of their Sikhi and lose their faith. They are not faithful. There are many reasons to go to Punjab.”
The word got out in Patna that Guru Sahib was getting ready to go to Punjab. All of the Sikhs of Patna came and brought very expensive gifts and bowed. All the Masands from the East came and brought a lot of money. They all tried to convince Guru Sahib to stay. They said: “there is so much comfort here. There are many Sikhs here who come to see you everyday. There is absolutely no shortage of any kind here. All of us are under your command. Everyone is obedient to all your commands. We will do as you say. We will do as you wish us to do. This is our plea, our request.” Guru Sahib responded: “I am going to Punjab because I have very important tasks. Some tasks are obvious but some are not and they will unfold in time.”
It was apparent that Guru Sahib was determined to go. The citizens of Patna bowed and went to their homes as they knew there was nothing they could say, or do, to convince Guru Sahib.
There was a person named Jagat Seth who lived in Patna. He was a great Sikh of the Guru and was quite rich. When he found out that Guru Sahib had decided to go to Punjab, he brought a lot of sweets and delicacies for Guru Sahib. He brought trays and trays full of gourmet food to the house of the Guru. He folded his hands and bowed to the Guru and both mothers. He spoke to Guru Sahib with his hands folded: “oh Lord Guru, whatever wealth Jagat has, is all yours. You are the master of money. Everyone in the world lives off of your blessing. I am your servant and blessed by you. I have many houses and great businesses because of you. If you have decided to leave, wherever you go and wherever you stay, I have a place in all those cities and towns. I will provide all the food and money you require along the way for your travels. You can stay as long as you like within those cities and towns. I will provide all the food, clothing, animals and buggies you require. You can send a Sikh to my warehouses in those cities and I will send what is needed. I will send a message to all my managers to stay in your service. Whatever seva I can do, I will do it.” Listening to Jagat Seth, Guru Sahib was extremely happy. He spoke to him: “the love that you have shown me, you will be rewarded greatly. Your wealth will be stable and you will become wealthier. There will be no shortages. I don’t know if I will need anything from your warehouses, as there will be many Sikhs along the way, but you will receive the rewards as though you have given everything. I have been served with your words. Your seva has been accepted. You will receive the reward right now, whether you do anything or not, your expression has been rewarded.” Jagat Seth heard Guru Sahib’s words and was extremely happy. He couldn’t express his joy. The Guru was happy with him. He still sent messages to all his managers to all the warehouses along the way to serve the Guru as required: “if you see the Guru’s vaheer travelling through your regions, travel ahead to meet him 2 km and bring food for the Sikhs and the Guru’s family and feed for the animals. Do his seva and make him happy.” Jagat Seth bid his farewell to the mothers and bowed to their feet. He bowed to Guru Sahib and received his blessings. Jagat Seth was rewarded for his bhakti, devotion, and seva. He was blessed with salvation and prosperity. He went back to his shop and everyone congratulated him. It had become well known that he had received great blessings.
12-42 Taking Leave from Patna
Guru Sahib made arrangements to leave. Eventually, everyone else was ready to leave as well. Just then, the messenger Sikh from Anandpur also arrived. The Sikh had the message from the elder Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, asking everyone to make their way to Anandpur. The Sikh bowed to both mothers and told them what had happened in Punjab. Guru Sahib was playing and noticed that someone from Punjab had arrived. He came to see the Sikh. The Sikh bowed to Guru Gobind Singh ji and said: “Guru Sahib wants you to come to Punjab.” Hearing this, both mothers and Guru Sahib rejoiced. He gave the letter to Guru Sahib and Guru Sahib had the letter read out: “I am happy with the Sangat and the Masands and share my blessings with all. Tell everyone to remember the Guru at all times. The Guru will be with you at all times. All of your wishes will be fulfilled.” The Sangat of Patna was very happy to be remembered by the Guru. The letter continued: “give everyone hope and fulfill their wishes. Bless everyone. Make sure the Sangat is happy and bring everyone in the household to Punjab along with you. As you come to Punjab, come slowly and visit the Sangat along the way. There is no need to hurry, there is a lot of Sangat who is waiting to see you and is doing Simran. It is around 1200 km to Anandpur. Travel about 20-30 km a day. Stop by in Kaanshi, Ayodhya, Lucknow and other places where there are Sikhs. Bless them along the way. Stay 1-2 days there, and preach the word of Sikhi, performing Kirtan and Katha along the way. Come to Anandpur, and then settle here in Bliss. This is your home and take care of the city.” When this message was read out loud, Guru Gobind Singh ji was very happy. “It’s good that Pithaji’s command has come. He knew my heart’s wishes. The Lord Guru, father has sent this message for us.” Guru Sahib asked the Sikh from Punjab: “where did you leave my Lord Father? Where is he now and how much Sangat is with him now? How is Anandpur and the people there? How far is the Sutlej River from Anandpur? How far are the mountainous regions?” The Sikh responded: “The Sangat comes everyday. The Sutlej is very close to Anandpur. It is very deep and blue. It is a very ancient river. The mountains are very close with very high peaks. The temple of Chandika is on top of those mountains. The place is lush with much greenery. Tall green trees are where Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji blesses the Sangat. Wherever his holy feet are placed, the Sangat follows him. Many Sikhs and Masands reside in Anandpur. Thousands of people come to bow their heads everyday. They come with their prayers, which the Guru fulfills. The glory of Anandpur is spreading far and wide. Many people of the Sangat bring a lot of money, coming with faith to see the Guru.” Guru Gobind Singh ji was very happy and blessed the Sikh who brought the message with salvation and prosperity.
Mataji began to pack all the household items and ready the animals and buggies. The big-horned bulls were ready to pull the chariots. Their horns had golden bells on them. There were clothes with golden thread put on top of the items to cover them. The chariots had gems embedded into them. There were pearl strands with tassels hanging from the chariots. The Sangat came to bow to Guru Sahib and made a plea: “Guru ji, you are going to Punjab, please give us a symbol to remember you by. Anything that was close to you. We will worship the symbol and remember you everyday. We will pray to it, and ask for your help. The Patna Sangat is requesting this from you.” Guru Sahib accepted their plea upon seeing their love. Guru Sahib gave them his cradle: “this is my cradle from when I was born and was put in it while sleeping. Keep your faith in the cradle and you will receive what you ask for,” said Guru Sahib. The Masands took the cradle and placed it where Guru Sahib’s birth had occurred. The cradle is still placed at Takhat Sri Harimandhir Sahib, Patna, Bhangoora Sahib. Other Shasters are also kept with the cradle in today’s age. His shoes, written hukamnamas, swords and chakrams are kept there as well. This is the same house that once belonged to Salas Rai Johari during Guru Nanak Dev ji’s time. Kavi Santokh Singh ji saw this cradle. He saw the faith the Sangat had towards the items of the Guru. People pray to the cradle and their sins are washed away.
Guru Sahib addressed the Sangat: “Where Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji first went to after leaving Patna, Haandi Sahib, 9 km away, we will first stop there and sent up camp.” All the Shasters that Guru Sahib had collected were placed in a trunk. The Sikhs picked up the trunk on top of their heads and placed it on top of the chariots and sent it off first. They left Patna on top of horses and chariots.
They first camped at Haandi Sahib. The friends of Guru Sahib, the small soldiers, the children of the businessmen, Hindus, Muslims all came to say bye to their friend. They folded their hands and bowed to Guru Sahib. The older and mature kids said: “our Gobind is leaving us just like the Govind of Vrindavan did. Krishan ji grew up and left the people of Vrindavan, crying. Gobind is doing as Govind did. He went to Mathura and left his friends, longing for his company. He gave us so much love and now he is leaving us. Looks like Krishan and Govind are from the same school. He takes everyone’s mind and then leaves them, cheating them. Krishan was an avatar and so is Gobind.” The people of Patna now knew what Vrindavan went through when Krishan left. The kids of Patna were not happy. The people of Patna were sad. The kids told their parents: “we want to go with our beloved friend. We will stay with our friend our whole life. We will come back and meet our family and relatives when he comes back.” Their parents would explain to them and convince them to let go of their wish to go along. They said: “he is not coming back. He is going very far and will live in Punjab. If we had better karma, he would not have left us. It seems we had bad karma after all.” The kids continued their stubbornness and cried. The parents had to hold them back. The old lady neighbour, whose cotton stalks the kids would take and tease, saw the vaheer leaving. She was crying along with the other people. She bowed to the Guru’s feet and said: “you tied me with your love and now you are leaving me? Who am I going to call now?” She was in a deep sadness seeing Guru Sahib leave. Guru Sahib, seeing her love, said to her: “you are blessed Mata. Your sins and karma are all washed away. You will not come into this cycle of birth and death again. “Here, I am going to give you all the money you need for the rest of your life. Live your life in bliss. When you are finished with your time on earth, you will come to me and live in Sach Khand for eternity.” She was overjoyed hearing the blessings.
Guru Sahib gave away his personal belongings to the people of Patna. Old and young, all came to see Guru Sahib, deep in sorrow. Just as Ram Chander ji was leaving for his exile from Ajodhya, the citizens followed for a very long way. It is difficult to mention how many were in deep sorrow and crying.
The place of “Vaddi Sangat” in the current days, is where Guru Sahib was headed towards. Thousands of people went with Guru Sahib. Mata Nanaki ji was on her chariot and Mata Gujri ji was in her palanquin. Guru Sahib was in between them on his own palanquin. Many were on their horses and some were on their buggies drawn by bulls. Many people came along with Guru Sahib this far to see him off. They wanted to stay the night for at least one day. Each step they travelled was equivalent to the baths at many holy sites. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be travelling with the Guru, the Guru who fulfills everyone’s needs and wants. Thousands were following. Many asked for blessings. Guru Sahib blessed everyone. Everyone got off their horses and chariots once they had reached Vaddi Sangat.
12-43 Reaching Kanshi
By evening, many people had gathered at Vaddi Sangat. Rich, poor, men, women, old and young, all had reached. Everyone met Guru Sahib with faith and love. The people of Patna served Guru Sahib well. They brought a lot of grains, nuts, dry fruit and vegetables for the travels as well. They brought lentils, rice and ghee along with flour. Everywhere Guru Sahib went, Langar was held in the highest regards and was distributed openly. Guru Sahib ji had both mothers with him and the people of Patna wanted to serve them well, as they didn’t know when they would see Guru Sahib in Patna again. The rich businessmen came, bringing a lot of grains and food. The Langar was constantly running. Guru Sahib loved the people of Patna and they loved him. The people of Patna sang the glories of Guru Sahib bringing gifts and clothes. They brought gifts for Guru Sahib, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib and the mothers. Karah Prashaad was made and distributed openly along with sweets. Sevadaars (people doing seva) were distributing the food with great speed. There were thousands of people. Some came to listen to Kirtan some came to serve the Guru but everyone was here to give Guru Sahib a great send off. The businessmen brought a lot of money. Guru Sahib blessed them for generations to come. Patna remained a hub and storage for the wealth of the Khalsa for a very long time. From 1708 to 1748, Mata Sundri ji was in charge of the Khalsa Panth and had all the banking storage of the Panth in Patna. All the money was deposited and withdrawn from Patna Banks. Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji also considered Patna a hub for Sikhi. Many Sikhs came to ask Guru Sahib: “so you are really leaving us? We used to come see you everyday. You fulfilled all our dreams and wishes. Who are we going to go to now? If the Master is close by, we would come to you in our time of need. Where will we go now? Who will we open our hearts to now?” Guru Sahib consoled them and said: “this is my birthplace. Go to the place of where I was born and do your Ardaas there. Whatever you ask for from that place, you shall receive. I have left my cradle there. When you sit there in meditation and pray with your hands folded, with faith and love, you shall receive what you ask for. The Guru is everywhere and is beyond space and time. Some do ardaas from their mouths, some do ardaas quietly in their hearts, the Guru hears and knows everything. I will fulfill my Sikh’s ardaas.” The Sangat and Masands of Patna heard Guru Sahib’s word and were awed at how young the Guru is and how mature and intelligent he is. He is increasing the faith of the Sikhs and he is complete in every aspect. He is the apex of Brahamgyaan in such a young age. His words do not reflect his age. They said: “of course he is so great, he is the son of the Guru.” They folded their hands and bowed. They were sad that Guru Sahib was leaving though. Many types of gourmet foods were made and distributed to the Sangat. A great platter with many delicacies was brought for Guru Sahib as well. Sweet, sour, and salty types of foods were made. They were filled with nuts, dry fruit and fine garnishing. Many types of rice were prepared, sweet, coconut, salty, with aromatic herbs. Sweet, and salty types of foods were made by the finest cooks. Preserved fruits known as murubas; different types of achaars (pickles), mango, radish, and chilli were brought for Guru Sahib and the Sangat. So great was the food that the Sangat was in bliss. The Sangat that came with Guru Sahib, everyone got the same food, regardless of their status or class. Guru Sahib made sure that nobody had to make food at home that day. It was a great celebration. Everyone who came wanted to make sure their life was blessed. The Divan went till 11 pm. Everyone wanted to make sure they got the most out of their visit. Everyone eventually rested at night time. The Sangat was praising Guru Sahib in their hearts.
In the last watch of the night, the Sangat awoke to sing Asa Di Vaar. The Rababis, the Keertanis of the House of the Guru, did Asa Di Vaar with love and devotion. Guru Sahib bathed and got ready, wearing beautiful clothes. He then sat in meditation and focused on the true name, Satnam, along with the Sangat. People began to gather in great numbers before sunrise. They brought more gifts and placed them in front of Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib made them all sit close by. They all saw Guru Sahib up close and enjoyed being in the moment of Guru Sahib’s presence. Guru Sahib consoled everyone as he noticed they were depressed: “don’t worry, come see me in Anandpur Sahib any time you want. Patna is my birth place and I’ve witnessed its greatness. Visit my birthplace everyday with love and faith and you will truly receive what you ask for. Your love will be fulfilled. Come to Anandpur and visit me.” There was a crowd all around Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib got into his palanquin and ordered everyone to mobilize.
The vaheer then started off towards the west direction. People were still coming and came running to bow to Guru Sahib. People were coming in the thousands still. Some kept walking till the next 30 km. Guru Sahib would tell them to return their home but they would decide to go to the next stop with Guru Sahib. They would cry and not want to leave. Some were just standing and couldn’t speak because their throats swelled up with emotion. Whoever could go as far as they could, they went and were given Siropas by Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib gave them much respect for their love. They all sang Guru Sahib’s glory and eventually they went home. The words of the Guru helped them through this emotional departure and separation. Every house in Patna was discussing the departure of Guru Sahib from Patna.
Guru Sahib ji was travelling in his palanquin. Many people mounted their buggies and chariots including Mata Nanaki ji. Mata Gujri ji was in her palanquin. They were headed in the west direction and travelled for 6 hours till the sun set everyday. They then set up camp in the evening. They set up Langar and fed the animals. The Sikhs in the area came to see the Guru and brought many gifts. In this manner Guru Sahib travelled. They took the same route that Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji took. They would travel during the day for 2 watches (6 hours) and rest at night in a village or at a house of a Sikh. The Sikhs of the region would serve the Guru with great love. They would consider themselves blessed and do as much seva of food for the Sangat as they could. They would come and bow to Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib travelled for a few days and reached the Shiv puri, also know as Kanshi, Banaras or Varanasi. This place was the place of education. Many types of teachings were taught here. Guru Sahib said to the mothers: “Mataji, I would like to stay in this city for a while.” (Guru Sahib stayed here to see the set up of this ancient university as he was to establish a university in Anandpur. He had poets and scholars of all types, staying with him as he grew up in Anandpur, to translate the Vedas, Shaasters and other primary and secondary scriptures of all religions. He made education accessible for all walks of people of various class and status. Scriptures, study of science, instructions of battle strategy, manuals on wild birds; were all written and compiled during this golden time.) He continued: “This great city is known as the centre of education throughout the world and is unmatched to any other university. Many scholars are here; mathematicians, language scholars, musicians, etc. The streets of this city are drenched in knowledge.” Mata Nanaki ji heard her grandson and was extremely happy. She said to him: “son, your father came here twice in his life as well. When we were heading towards Patna, your mother was pregnant, with you inside of her, when we came here last. Guru Sahib came here and was visited by many Sikhs, Shastris, Pandits and musicians. They came to speak to him with various questions. They were impressed and inspired by your father’s teachings and words. He did Kirtan here for a long time and everyone was happy. The people of Kanshi loved your father so much that they wouldn’t let us leave for many days. The Sikhs here are very faithful and devoted. They will come see you for your blessings. You may stay here as long as you want.” Guru Sahib heard her grandmother’s words and was really happy. He ordered the Sikhs to go to Kanshi and advise the Sikhs there that he was coming. The Sikhs of Kanshi cleaned the streets and came ahead to meet Guru Sahib. They had garlands of flowers ready for Guru Sahib’s arrival. They joined the vaheer and headed towards Kanshi. The people of Kanshi all came to see Guru Sahib and greeted him. The Hindus and Muslims all came to see Guru Sahib. They all came ahead to meet Guru Sahib as well. They had great devotion and brought baskets of dry fruits and ripe fruits. Some of the Sangat was doing Kirtan, singing Shabads of love, at Kanshi. There were people standing, watching from afar across the shore of the Ganga, bowing their heads upon catching a glimpse of the child Guru. The two groups, the Sikhs within Kanshi and the vaheer, met and crossed the Ganga atop boats. The people of Kanshi helped set up camp for Guru Sahib. They all folded their hands and bowed to Guru Sahib.
12-44 Stay in Kanshi
The Sangat of Kanshi came to see Guru Sahib with love and devotion, bringing many dry fruits and nuts. Their hearts were filled with bliss, seeing Guru Sahib. The Sikhs set up the resting place for Guru Sahib, finding a nice place. They set up a bed and laid out expensive sheets and blankets on top of it. The son of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji was seated atop the bed and all the Sikhs bowed to the child Guru. News spread in and around Kanshi of Guru Sahib’s arrival. The people of Kanshi talked amongst themselves: “Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji had been here in Kanshi before. This is his beautiful child. Visiting the child Guru, a person’s wishes are all fulfilled and the nine treasures are obtained. Whoever doesn’t come to see the Guru, that person must have bad karma.” People: men and women, came in the thousands, bringing many gifts. They saw the small size of Guru Sahib and the great power he possessed. They talked amongst themselves: “this is definitely a very powerful avatar. His walk and talk is of great warriors. He will definitely bring a great revolution. Whoever chants his name, he will reach salvation, without a doubt.” People were constantly coming and going. They would see his face and be immediately enchanted by it. The event went on till evening. Food was constantly being brought and the Langar was distributed openly. People brought rice, flour, ghee and sugar for the Langar. Whatever the cost was, required for the Langer, there was an abundance that was brought as people knew that the Langar would be distributed openly. Lentils were made. Rice pudding was made with nuts and rich garnishing. A plate was set for Guru Sahib. Both mothers ate Langar along with the Sikhs. After everyone ate, they went to sleep.
In the last watch of the night, Guru ji bathed and got ready. The Sangat came to visit Guru Sahib. The Scholars and Brahmins of Kanshi all came to see Guru Sahib. They came and bowed to Guru Sahib and sat close to Guru Sahib. They spoke to Guru Sahib: “your father has visited us in the past. He made us his “purohits” (priest, they would keep the family tree for the clan/family) of this area and gave us a lot of donations. We have been waiting for someone from his family to come and give us donations. There is no other equal to the Guru and we feel fully satisfied by the Guru’s donations. After receiving the Guru’s donations, we have no need to ask anyone else for money. We feel blessed that you have visited us, without us leaving Kanshi. Plus, you provide donations for us.” Guru Sahib listened to their cleaver words and smiled. He said: “tell me, what would you like? What ever you want, you can have. The house of Guru Nanak does not hold back when giving. This is the city of Shivji and you are very intelligent scholars. You have protected the knowledge of the Vedas and Shastras for many generations and also teach others. You are deserving of all donations and subsistence.” Hearing Guru Sahib’s words, the highly knowledgeable Pandits said: “we would like you to give us everything you have. Since you have come here today, by the will of Akaal Purakh, we ask for your extreme generosity in donations.” Guru Sahib nodded in agreement. He then took all the money he had, all the chariots, jewelry and gifts, and gave it all to the Pandits of Kanshi. The Pandits were in awe. They said: “you are as great as your family. You are a great donor and a powerful Avatar. You are very intelligent and we see the signs of a great warrior in you.” Guru Sahib stood at the shores of the Ganga, and bathed in the river. Guru Sahib gave everything he had to the Pandits. The Pandits were extremely happy. They received the clothes off the Guru’s back as well. The Pandits and the poor people of Kanshi praised the Guru as they received many thousand Rupees of stuff. In the city of Shivji, the people were singing the Guru’s praises. When the Guru gave them everything, the Sangat and Masands heard about this and considered that they should start to gather all the things that Guru Sahib would need for his journeys. They brought clothes and had tailors sew them for Guru Sahib and his vaheer. They bought chariots and buggies; bulls and cows. As the days passed, the news spread far and wide.
The Sangat of Jonpur came, bringing money and gifts for Guru Sahib. The beloved Gurbaksh Masand came along with the Sangat of Jonpur. They came singing Kirtan as they came to Kanshi. They did Kirtan in Ragas and visited Guru Sahib. They folded their hands and bowed to his feet. Guru Sahib fulfilled everyone’s wishes. The Sangat of Jonpur stayed for three days with Guru Sahib and received Siropas from Guru Sahib as they left. They saw the Guru for the first time and said: “the Guru is a child but very powerful and with unlimited virtues. He is the gem of the Sodhis.” A lot of money was accumulated again. Guru Sahib prepared and/or bought more chariots and cattle for the Vaheer. Once all of the stuff was ready, Guru Sahib got ready to leave. He gave the Sangat of Kanshi Siropas. The people of Banaras said: “Guru Sahib, please make us your Sikhs. We seek your sanctuary.” Guru Sahib saw the love of the Sangat and gave them the gift of the Charanpahul. The ones who received the Charanpahul were in bliss and realised how powerful the child Guru was. They were really inspired by Guru Sahib and said: “oh Lord, please come inside the city of Banaras and see the markets.” Guru Sahib ji agreed and sat into the new palanquin that was prepared and toured the city of Kanshi. Thousands of people were with Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib saw the markets and then reached the Panch Ganga Ghatt. This was the place where Kabir Sahib ji laid down one morning to receive the Gurmantra from his Guru, Ramanand ji. This was the path that Bhagat Ramanand ji would take to go for his bath every morning. As Ramanand ji went for his morning bath, he bumped into Bhagat Kabir ji, laying on the floor and gave him the holy sermon: “wake up ye of Ram, recite the name of Ram.” When the Pandits asked why Kabir ji was reciting Ram, as Kabir ji was from a low caste and the Pandits looked down upon that, Kabir ji told them how he received the Gurmantra from Ramanand ji. Ramanand ji was very happy seeing Kabir ji immersed into the thought of Akaal Purakh.
Guru Gobind Singh ji reached the Ghatt and toured the region on boat. Guru Sahib gave a lot of money to the boat driver. The boat drivers were very happy with the money. Every street that Guru Sahib walked through; the women showered him with flowers. The women were beautiful themselves and looked like lightening atop the beautiful houses. They bowed to him from far. There was such a crowd that people couldn’t come near Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib’s palanquin moved slowly through the whole city. Any one who saw him was in great joy. Men and women got on top of their balconies and showered flowers from the top. The people of Banaras were very spiritual and religious. They recognized the light of Guru Nanak Dev ji and respected his 10th incarnation. The people said: “he is the Guru but he has the personality of a great King. When he will be an adult, his radiance will be unmatched.” Everyone had their hands folded when they would see Guru Sahib move by. Guru Sahib visited the places of Guru Nanak Dev ji; Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and where Bhai Gurdas ji visited, known as Chetan Mutt. (Chetan Mutt is where Guru Gobind Singh ji will send five Sikhs to receive education of the Vedas and Shastras who will start the Nirmala Panth). People who saw Guru Sahib were in bliss. Whoever didn’t get to see the Guru, they regretted it deeply. The buildings were four to five stories high with flags flapping on the balconies. The houses looked like they wanted to fly in the sky. The walls had paintings of birds, gardens and flowers on them. There were many temples of Shivji there. The businessmen in Banaras were very rich but were great donors as well. When Guru Sahib travelled by, the merchants would rise and bring gifts and bow to the palanquin. Guru Sahib would bless everyone he saw. Everyone felt like they got a personal glance from Guru Sahib. It was a great celebration for the whole city. Every home was singing the glories of the Guru. Guru Sahib’s camp was then set inside the city of Banaras. Guru Sahib had dinner in the evening and went to sleep. In the morning he got up, bathed and got ready. After sun rise, he got the vaheer ready and mobilized to leave. The chariots and palanquins were all set to leave.
12-45 Ayodhya and Lakhnaur
All night long, the Sikhs did Kirtan in various ways. They sang in Raag and Taal with Rababs and Mridangs. Guru Sahib was very pleased with the Kirtan and enjoyed the Raags and Taals. When it was morning, Guru Sahib bathed and the Sikhs washed his feet and drank the Amrit. They received the name (Gurmantra) from Guru Sahib. They took the Charanpahul and sprinkled it everywhere in their homes. Their whole family was blessed by the Amrit and receiving of the Gurmantra. They thus entered the Sikhi order by this tradition.
Guru Sahib’s chariots were ready in the mean time. The Sikhs were very happy. Guru Sahib gave everyone their sermon and left Kanshi. He headed towards the east and the people followed Guru Sahib for many miles. Guru Sahib then bid them farewell and told them to return to their homes and carry on their household duties. Both mothers were in their chariot and palanquin. The Vaheer was also travelling along. The chariots and buggies were all new, as the old ones were all donated to the Pandits. In this manner, Guru Sahib continued his travels during the day. Wherever Guru Sahib would go, the Sikhs in the area would find out and come to see him. When they would meet him, they received the fruit of the nine treasures. They would be in bliss by the time they reached their homes again. They would say: “it was all of a sudden that Guru Sahib came to our house. Otherwise, we would have to go to Punjab to see him and it is our good fortunes that Guru Sahib came to us. It was as though getting luscious fruit in a dry and hot desert. This is how we feel about Guru Sahib coming to our homes.” They offered many gifts: flour, grains, milk, yoghurt and ghee. They served the Guru in various ways. People would receive rewards for their seva and their wishes were fulfilled. They would come ahead to receive Guru Sahib when he would come, and then follow him to the next village when he left.
Guru Sahib then arrived into the city of Raja Ram Chander: Ayodhya. Ram Chander ji spent most of his life here. Ayodhya was considered as one of the purest cities. The people here were very religious and honest. Guru Sahib came into the city, and the Sikhs came to meet him, when they found out. They came ahead many miles to meet him. They bowed their heads and offered money. Whoever did not know about Guru Sahib, they would ask: “who is this radiant child? He is so beautiful and very powerful. He looks like an Avatar of a Devata or Akaal Purakh. Everyone is bowing to him without their will.” The Sikhs that knew, would bow to Guru Sahib and tell the others: “this is the son of the Satguru Tegh Bahadhur ji and from the family of Guru Ramdas ji. He is the gem of his family. Sri Guru Hargobind ji was the son of Guru Arjan Dev ji. Guru Hargobind ji destroyed many armies of the Mughals. His son is Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, whose feet are worshiped in the whole world with respect. Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji had come to the west. He is the son of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji and Sri Gujri ji. He is now heading to Punjab.” People would hear his glories and enter into a state of bliss. Some folded their hands and bowed, some brought great gifts for Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib would glance at everyone within the markets and bless them. In an open field, the camp of the vaheer was set up. The Lord Guru then rested on a beautiful bed. The Sikhs of Ayodhya came to serve the Guru, bringing rice, flour and ghee along with feed from the animals. They placed their offerings at the feet of the Guru and bowed. Guru Sahib asked how everyone was, to which they all responded: “very good. In bliss, we are in.” They sat beside Guru Sahib and in a matter of a few minutes, a lot of people had gathered to meet Guru Sahib. They all came bringing money offerings and bowed.
As Guru Sahib was sitting, a large troop of monkeys came. Guru Sahib saw them and smiled. Guru Sahib told the Langri (cooks of the Guru’s Langar) to bring roasted black chana. Guru Sahib threw the chanas close by to see the barrel of monkeys play around. The monkeys came running towards the food. Some began to fight amongst themselves. Guru Sahib then asked for gurrh (sugar solids from sugar cane) he then threw the gurrh to see more of the monkey fight. The monkeys got even more excited and began screaming and biting. They used their nails and teeth to fight. They would steal the gurrh from each other. Some began to bleed. Guru Sahib laughed and was very much entertained watching them fight. The monkeys faces and bottoms were naturally red. They were angry at each other and in full battle mode. Guru Sahib said to Mamma Kirpal Chand ji: “look Mammaji, look how they fight.” As a child, Guru Gobind Singh ji was filled with the warrior spirit. His task on Earth was to fill the warrior spirit in all. For about a half an hour, this battle of the monkeys continued. Guru Sahib then came back to his bed and sat down. He spoke to the Sikhs and preached the name of Akaal Purakh. He asked everyone to stay for Langar. The Langri brought Langar for Guru Sahib and distributed to the Sangat. Night had fallen and everyone went to sleep. The guards were on duty, watching the whole camp.
In the morning, Guru Sahib bathed and then got ready to leave. The Vaheer passed through many villages along the way. The Vaheer then reached along the shore of the Ganga where the city of Haridwar is located. Guru Sahib reached Haridwar. There is a place called Muyapuri. Muyapuri is mentioned in the Shastras: visiting it will grant salvation. Guru Sahib met the Sikhs there and the Sikhs offered money and served Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib visited many people and then rested the night. In the morning, Guru Sahib bathed in the Ganga. The Ganga is considered to be a very holy river which washes away many sins. The Ganga is very pure and clean in this location, coming from its origins in the mountains. Once Guru Sahib bathed, the Brahmins came to ask for donations. The Brahmins all bowed to Guru Sahib. As soon as Guru Sahib sat down, he gave everyone a lot of money. Guru Sahib stayed here for some days and then set off again.
As they travelled about 4 km, they reached the shores of “Soorajsutta” (the daughter of the Sun = Jamuna River). Guru Sahib then bathed in the Jamuna and then crossed the river on boat. The water of the Jamuna is dark. When Guru Sahib reached the other shore, many Sikhs came to meet him. Guru Sahib mounted his horse and travelled along the Vaheer. Guru Sahib then received the message of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji. This message was sent by his father from Delhi. The messenger spoke word for word: “it has taken you a long time to come. I had come ahead and waited for you, for a while. I will now be sacrificing my body atop the head of the Mughal Emperor. All will see me giving my head. Do not come to Anandpur now. There is a village called Lakhnaur. There, a Masand named Jetha lives there. Go and live at his house. He will serve you very well. (Bhai Mehar Chand, another brother of Mata Gujri ji was also known to live in Lakhnaur, who had settled there after the Battle of Kartarpur during Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s time). Stay in Lakhnaur and then I will send another message, when it will be an appropriate time to go to Anandpur. Then, you may live in Anandpur with comfort. Wait for my command and do not travel anymore. The situation in Anandpur is not good right now.” Mata Nanaki ji heard the message and become surprised and worried. She wondered what had happened all of a sudden. She began to shed tears and felt that the time of sorrow is returning again. She was looking forward to seeing her son. She asked the Sikh: “what happened? How is the Guru? In which condition is he in? Tell me everything.” Both of the mothers and Guru Gobind Singh ji sat around the messenger. The messenger told them the whole story of the coming of the Pandits from Kashmir; the Ahdeeyas looking for Guru Sahib; spending the Chaumasa in Saifabad; the soldiers looking for Guru Sahib; Guru Sahib going to Agra himself; surrendering himself to the police and the forces of the Emperor; the Emperor sending a huge force of 12,000 to bring Guru Sahib to Delhi. “Guru Sahib is now in Delhi, where I met him. He is in no pain and is calm and serene. He told me to give you this message to not to go to Anandpur and to go to Lakhnaur instead. He did not have time to write the message and so he gave it to me verbally. The guard of the fort is a good person and lets some of the Sikhs meet Guru Sahib at night time,” said the messenger.
Both mothers were very worried: “oh Lord Guru, what play are you playing? We were very happy, thinking we will all live together in Anandpur.” Mata Nanaki ji stopped there and decided not to go further. Her mind was in deep trouble. The senior mother had to hear this bad news. The messenger Sikh spoke to Mataji: “Mataji, you are now in charge, and all the Sikhs are looking towards you for your guidance. You must not lose hope. The Guru is playing the whole play himself. No one can do anything to him without his own wishes. Please listen to his command and go to Lakhnaur, quickly. Please reach the place where Guru Sahib wishes you to go. There is a beautiful haveli there. The Sahibzada is young and Guru Sahib wants you to make sure he is raised well. He is the Guru and should be considered the heir to the throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Do not be in sorrow and do not worry. Guru Sahib has mentioned this many times.” The Sikh took everyone to Lakhnaur.
They came to the house of Bhai Jetha. Most of the chariots and items were sent to Anandpur and only items of immediate needs were kept with them and taken along to Lakhnaur. Mamma Kirpal Chand ji went to Anandpur Sahib at Guru Gobind Singh ji’s direction. Both mothers and Guru Sahib stayed at Lakhnaur to stay in a less busy area. Bhai Jetha served the Guru’s family well. The people of Lakhnaur were not aware of Guru Sahib and did not know who was.
Guru Sahib would play with the kids around the area. His body was getting stronger day by day as he will be destroying the tyrants when he grows up.
The history now turns back to Delhi, the history of the great sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji will now continue in the next chapters. As the force of 12,000 soldiers brought Guru Sahib to Delhi, many people came to visit Guru Sahib.
