12.1 – 12.5

12-1 Manglacharan and Raja Maan Singh

Oh Parbraham, Parmatma, you reside in all life in equilibrium.  All life is dependent upon you.  You are the inspiration for life.  Prabhoo, you are the Master of all, and the greatest.  Please reside in my heart.

You are white and beautiful like the moon, without faults; your face illuminates.  You destroy all conflicts.  Oh Sharda, your body is bright like the moonlight.  You are white like mercury and Naarad.  The Devatas bow to you, seeing you as the Giver of Bliss.  I bow to your feet, over and over again and begin the 12th Raas.

I bow to the lotus feet of Guru Nanak Dev ji who has given wisdom to the entire world by being the Guru of the whole world.  Please remove all the hurdles in my life.

I bow to the lotus feet of Guru Angad Dev ji, who is able to tolerate the intolerable; has extreme patience.  You made many Sikhs immortal.  You destroyed their obstacles.

The one who gives joy and bliss to his servants; who avoided death and pain for the Sikhs, I meditate upon Satguru Amar Das ji in my heart.

Oh Satguru Ramdas ji, you dispelled the fears of your servants with your words.  Please come into my heart and take away my fears as well.

I bow to the lotus feet of Guru Arjan Dev ji, who listens to the pleas of the Sikhs and destroys their pains.  He removes obstacles, and grants Mukti.

I bow to Guru Hargobind ji, who gives bliss to the Sikhs as the sun does to the lotus flowers.  He gives Mukti like the moon gives joy.

Satguru Har Rai ji, you give your servants joy and bliss.  You attack and destroy the enemies with your words.  I bow to thee and ask for you to bless me.

Whose Darshan makes the problems go away; whose feet takes the troubles of life away; whose personality is to give bliss to the Sikhs and make them blossom; I bow to Satguru Har Krishan ji.

I bow to the lotus feet of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji, who sacrificed his body like a strand of grass and dimmed the glory of the Turk Kingdom.

The one who created the Khalsa and made the world pure, relieved the world’s pain; Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji you are great!  By using anger, you destroyed the enemy in battle.

Remembering all of the ten Gurus in my heart, I meditate upon their lotus feet.  Remembering Akaal Purakh, the 12th Raas begins.

For many days, Guru Sahib was residing in Patna city and living peacefully.  After such long travels, this was a great rest, plus the Sikhs of the East were being blessed.

Now the Katha turns to the history of a King.  It is important to know this.  I will say it now, listen to this oh saints.  This King went with Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji to the province of Kamroop (current day Assam, India).  The historical foundation of this king will now be stated as I heard it.

During the time of the Turk king Akbar (about 60 years before Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji) in Delhi, Akbar had won all of the states in the sub-continent.  Any state that would not pledge their allegiance, Akbar would send his army to crush them.  He had a great army with many canons and very strategic advisors like Birbal and General Bairon Khan.  He had pledges of allegiances from several kings of the different lands.  Everyone obeyed Akbar and Akbar was the Emperor of Hindustan.  Akbar was very intelligent in politics.  He would go above and beyond to make friends and exiled his enemies.  The Province of Kamroop was the only state he had not won, but all others were under his kingdom.  The people of Kamroop were devotees of Devi Kamukhya.  Her light was illuminating there.  The people of this state were very well versed with tantric and mantric magic.  The temple of Devi Kamukhya was very powerful.  Akbar could not win this state, as the citizens of this state had great faith in the Devi.  Every time Akbar would attack, the people would go to the shelter of Devi Kamukhya.  She would help them.  The people of Kamroop would place spells on the army of the enemy and would make them run in circles with illusions.  Akbar sent his army many times, but the King of Kamroop and the state were not defeated.  The people remained opposed to Akbar.

There was a King of the Rajputs named Maan Singh.  Maan Singh had won Kabul and other great areas.  He would win the states and sound the Nagaras of victory.  He would surrender the charge to Akbar.  Maan Singh came back to Delhi after winning the Kabul area.  Akbar had become concerned with Maan Singh, thinking that he may rebel against him as Maan Singh had become very strong.  The Rajputs were very brave and were all behind Maan Singh.  Rana Partap Singh of the Rajputs had already rebelled, so Akbar was afraid that Maan Singh may rebel as well.  He was afraid that Maan Singh would join Partap Singh and attack Delhi.  This would put the Turk Empire into problems.  The Kabul Pathaans were very difficult to beat and Maan Singh had done the impossible.  Akbar did not want to give time to Maan Singh to think.  He wanted to send Maan Singh to a place from where he could not return from.  He wanted to send Maan Singh to Kamroop, the state of magicians.  There were many witches and illusionists there.  If Maan Singh did not win, he would be killed.  If Maan Singh won Kamroop, that would also be good for Delhi.  It was a win-win situation for Akbar.  He had deceit in his mind.

Akbar summoned Maan Singh to his court as soon as Maan Singh came back to Delhi from winning Kabul.  When Maan Singh entered Delhi, he saw butchers killing cows.  Killing cows is considered a grave sin for Hindus.  Maan Singh could not tolerate this.  He took his sword and killed all the butchers.  Most of the butchers were killed.  Some ran away.  Maan Singh killed all he saw.  This created a great unrest for all the Muslims in Delhi.  Maan Singh’s doings were notified to Akbar.  Akbar heard what had happened but he did not say anything.  Akbar was very angry when he heard of the killing of the Muslim butchers but he did not show his emotion.  He met Maan Singh with a smile and had him sit next to him in his court when he arrived.  He presented expensive weapons and jewels to Maan Singh.  Akbar called his highest officers into his court and honored Maan Singh for winning the Kabul region.  He gave him a lot of money as a reward.  He had placed betelnut leaves, as well as an unsheathed sword in the middle of the court.  Everyone in the full court saw this.  Everyone was quiet.  Akbar then spoke and said: “here, is this unsheathed sword and a dish full of betelnut leaves.  I want a warrior to stand up and go to the Kamroop state and win it for me.”  Nobody answered his call as everyone was aware of the magicians of Kamroop.  All of the Governors and officers went quiet.  Maan Singh then thought to himself that he had been honored greatly by Akbar and that this unsheathed sword must have been meant for him.  Akbar was looking at others but he was plotting to send Maan Singh to Kamroop.  Maan Singh was a proud Rajput and did not want to be called a coward for not answering the call to win Kamroop.  Maan Singh did believe that he could win, as he had defeated the strongest warriors.  He was, although, aware that Akbar was plotting a treacherous scheme.  Maan Singh saluted Akbar and picked up the sword and the betelnut leaves.  Akbar was really happy and shouted out “Vah Maan Singh!”

Maan Singh then left Delhi with his army and took a regiment given to him by Akbar as well.  He had collected a huge army.  Maan Singh then headed east towards Kamroop.  Many regiments went along with Maan Singh, as though black clouds came out.  The war drums sounded like thunder when the call to move out was given.  The swords flashed like the sun.  As Maan Singh left, his left eye twitched as a bad omen.  He slowly traveled from village to village, setting up many camps along the way.  Maan Singh kept an eye on his own army and took care of them well.  Akbar gave a lot of words of encouragement to Maan Singh along with a lot of money.  Akbar was facing a win-win situation as both outcomes were good for him.  He kept sending money and gifts to Maan Singh.

Maan Singh went east to show his strength.  He won many lands in the east.  He was really strong.  Nobody could face him.  In Guwahati, there is a river called Brahmaputra.  On one side is Rangamati, where Maan Singh set up his camp.  The river is about 12 kms wide and looks like a lake.  To cross that river is very difficult.  On the other side of the river is the temple of Kamukhya Devi.  A great city is there.  Guwahati.  The King of Guwahati had a great army and was considered to be a God by the citizens of Kamroop.  The King was a devotee of Aad Shakti Kamukhya and meditated on her daily.  He did many havans with incense and sandalwood everyday.  When he heard about Maan Singh marching onto his capital city of Guwahati, he did tantric recitations of spells and gave many sacrifices of goats to the Kamukhya Devi.  He used special spells to destroy Maan Singh before he could cross the river.  The spell sent a spirit to kill Maan Singh.  During that time, Maan Singh was sitting in a pure place.  He was also praying to Aad Shakti and reciting the Chandi prayers along with the Braham Kavach.  The spirit energy was not effective and the spell had failed.  Kalika was protecting Maan Singh by extending her hand.  Maan Singh wanted to win this area with his strength.  Maan Singh’s army was camped along the river banks of the Brahmaputra.  The citizens of Kamroop were now scared of Maan Singh’s forces.

The King of Kamroop saw his scared citizens and made a second attempt.  With his tantric magic, he created a boat of illusions.  He used his powers to create an illusion of a beautiful woman aboard that boat.  She looked real.  He made lotus flowers with nice fragrances aboard the vessel.  He used all the spells using Maan Singh’s name to create this boat.  He pushed the boat across with the power of Mantras.  The boat slowly approached the shore to where Maan Singh and his army were camped.  Maan Singh was taking a walk with two of his officers.  Maan Singh saw the boat and wondered why the boat was sailing ever so slowly as the river was flowing with great strength.  There was no driver for the boat and the boat was sailing right towards Maan Singh.  Maan Singh was very surprised seeing the drama.  He saw the beautiful woman on board and fell in love with the illusion and lost his senses.  He could no longer control himself and kept on looking at the fake woman.  He lost his patience.  He kept looking at the woman and got stuck in her thought.  He saw the lotus flowers and was attracted to them.  He reached out to grab the flowers.  The fake woman gave Maan Singh the lotus.  Maan Singh brought the flower closer to his nose to smell it.  As soon as he smelled the lotus, he lost his senses and started to run around for no reason.  He had gone mad.  The whole army saw Maan Singh and got scared.  They wondered if Raja Maan Singh, their leader, had gone mad, they may go mad as well.  All of the generals took their armies and headed back home.  The King of Kamroop heard that his strategy worked and attacked Maan Singh.  The army of Maan Singh was defeated and had to run away.  Maan Singh was totally unaware of what had happened.  The army spent the night far away.  After a few days, Maan Singh kept running around the shore as a mad man and lost his life.

The army of Maan Singh came back home and told Akbar of what had happened.  They told him about the spells and magic.  Akbar, upset about the news of not winning Kamroop, then placed another unsheathed sword in the middle of the court.  Nobody picked up the sword.  The sword stayed there.  Akbar died with the unfulfilled wish in his heart.  Akbar’s son Jahangir became the King after him.  Nobody picked up that sword, afraid of the magic of Kamroop.  After 24 years, Jahangir died.  After Jahangir, his son Shahjahan sat on the throne for about 27 years and still no one picked up the sword.  After Shahjahan’s reign, Aurangzeb took the crown.  He wanted to win Kamroop as well.

12-2 Bishan Singh Marches Upon Kamroop

When Nauranga (Aurangzeb) become the emperor, he won the allegiance of all the states.  He had a great army and made sure that every state was afraid of his law.

The unsheathed sword was still laying in the court that was left by Akbar to win Kamroop.  Nobody had picked it up in over 50 years.  Maan Singh had a grandson named Bishan Singh, who had a great governing position.  He was given a lot of money and land.  He had the same status as his grandfather.  Bishan Singh also had a great army.  Nauranga wanted Bishan Singh to go win Kamroop for him.  Nauranga gave him an army and gave him many gifts and weapons.  He encouraged Bishan Singh by praising him as a great warrior while holding treachery in his mind.  Bishan Singh was pressured into picking up the sword.  He was respected and praised a lot.  Nauranga encouraged him to go.  Bishan Singh did not want to go, being afraid of the magicians of Kamroop, but he had to go.  Bishan Singh thought to himself: “this may be my time, to die.”  He picked up the sword.  He took leave of the emperor and came back to Jodhpur/Jaipur.  He told his Rajput warriors that he had to win Kamroop.  He also told his family.  When his family and relatives heard this, everyone in the house, including his queens, all screamed in grief.  They started crying and began to beat their heads and chests in grief.  All of his friends and ministers were crying as well.  Bishan Singh’s mother was very depressed.  His mother said to him: “oh son, your grandfather was a brave warrior who won many battles.  Akbar sent him to Kamroop.  The magicians of Kamroop killed Maan Singh along the banks of Brahmaputra.  Maan Singh was a devotee of the Devi but he still died.  You, my son, are not as strong as him.  How will you win Kamroop?”  Jodhpur/Jaipur was in sorrow.  Bishan Singh was ready to die.  He had no hope of winning or staying alive.  There was a great depression within Jodhpur/Jaipur.  Maan Singh had lost his will to eat or drink.  He was no longer hungry.  He was deeply depressed.

One of Bishan Singh’s wives knew about the glory of the house of the Guru.  She was a religious person and had heard about Guru Hargobind Sahib ji helping to release the Rajput kings from the Gwalior jail.  The Shiklighars (caste of people that forged weapons) of the Rajput kingdoms made weapons for the 6th Guru as a token of gratitude.  When the queen used to live with her parents, she had heard the stories of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.  She heard that he stayed in Gwalior and assisted 52 kings from the Gwalior jail.  Those kings were doomed to die in the jail, but it was the Guru who helped free them from the jail.  It was known within the houses of Rajputs that the Guru was an Avatar with many powers.  The Guru was the ocean of compassion, giver of peace and was able to over-power the King.  He had freed the kings with respect.  The Queen went to her mother-in-law and told her what she knew about the Guru.  She told her how Bhai Jheta ji would transform into a lion every night and jump onto the emperor’s chest.  Bhai Jheta ji came to the emperor as a doctor to tell him of his illness.  Jahangir agreed to bring back the Guru from Gwalior but only allowed the release of the kings that can hold onto the chola of the Guru.  She told her: “If he is one your side, there is no need to have fear.  The Guru is the Lord of all three worlds.  He relieves the three types of sicknesses of his devotees.  We should find out who the current Guru is.”  She also told her husband the stories: “we should find out who the current Guru is.  We should go to his shelter and convince the current Guru to be on our side.  Kamroop is nothing in front of the Guru.  Even the King of the Devatas and the Asuras fear the Guru.  Noor Shah of Kamroop tried her magic on Guru Nanak Dev ji and it backfired on her and her servants all became cats.  She surrendered herself to Guru Nanak Dev ji and received the Satnam from Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Guru Nanak Dev ji is greater than any saint, king or officer.  Wherever he stands, no enemy can harm you.  The Peers and Meers, Sidhs and Naths; the Guru is above them all.”  As the mother-in-law heard the daughter-in-law’s words, she felt as though she was given a second chance at life.  Her chest felt calm, as though she drank Amrit.  She ordered her son: “go and find out where the Satguru is.  I’ve heard that there is a saint named Baba Ram Rai who is from their family, but he did not become the Guru.  He performed many miracles but his father was upset with him and the Gurta Ghaddi went to his younger brother.  His brother was the Guru for about 2 to 3 years and left this world form Delhi.  The Guru who now sits on the throne, we need to find them.  We need to ask him to help us.”  Everyone in the court heard the mother’s words and were very happy.

Bishan Singh asked his ministers to find out who the current Guru was and where he was living.  Within the court, one officer spoke up: “my King, I have met the current Guru.  I was at Gaya to do my ancestor’s prayers and I met the Guru there.  He then travelled to Patna from there.  I have heard all this from the Sikhs, that the Guru will be living in Patna for a long time.  Thousands have left their homes to serve the Guru’s feet and bow to them.  Guru ji has settled his whole family in Patna.  His glory is spread throughout the area and people from afar come to bring him gifts.  I have heard from the people that he has unlimited powers, unseen before.  His name is Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and he is known to be all-powerful.  His ways and nature are exceptionally beautiful.  Whichever path he travels on, the path becomes pure, showering Sikhi and Amrit.  People stand up in his honor and bow to him along his travels.  Wherever he stands, many miracles follow him.”  Bishan Singh felt like a great burden had lifted from his chest.  Bishan Singh told one of his ambassadors to get ready and leave for Patna at once.  He gave him swords, shields, daggers, silk clothes and jewels to present to the Guru.  “Go to Patna as fast as you can and ask Guru Sahib to stay in Patna and that I will come to Patna as soon as I can.  I will come to visit him very soon,” said Bishan Singh to his ambassador.  The ambassador took the letter and gifts and was on his way from Jaipur to Patna.  He took some people with him.  He had great stamina and was able to travel long distances without getting tired.  The ambassador reached Patna and asked for Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji.

Kavi Santokh Singh ji now brings the history back to Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji.  Listen to how it happened.  Guru Sahib was fulfilling the desires of the Sikhs.  The Guru’s desire was to fulfill the Sikhs’ desires.  Guru Sahib wanted to go to Bangladesh and visit all the Teeraths along the way.  He wanted to bathe there.  He wanted to go to the Brahmaputra River and also visit Jagannath, Bengal, Assam and other sites.  He wanted to see the different lands and wanted to give the message of Sikhi and to visit the places where Guru Nanak Sahib ji had been.  He wanted to encourage the people to recite the Satnam.  He wanted to bless the people.  To re-light the message of Guru Nanak Dev ji, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji wanted to go there.  There were other people in that area waiting for the Guru, wanting to see the Guru in their homes.  Some Sikhs had prepared clothes and some wanted to feed the Guru their special foods.  The Sikhs had a devoted love for the Guru, and would remember the Guru in their hearts.  They waited for Guru ji everyday.  They were determined to meet Guru ji.  They would ask saints on how they should worship the Guru so the Guru may come faster.  They wondered when Guru ji would come to them and give them his wisdom.  Guru ji heard their pleas and wanted to go towards Assam.  He sent a message there that Guru Sahib will be coming soon.

When the Sangat of Patna found out, they became worried.  They brought gifts of money and beautiful clothes for Guru ji.  They brought clothes of golden threads for Mata Gujri ji as well, along with jewellery.  The jewellery had diamonds and pearls.  The people of Patna were rich and always loaded with gold.  The fortunate women of Patna served Mata ji.  They would come to the home of Guru ji and do Seva.  The Sangat said to Guru Sahib: “Guru Sahib, please don’t leave Patna.  If you are not happy with our Seva, please teach us how to do the Seva that pleases you.  All the holy sites reside at your feet where they are worshiped.  Millions of Gangas flow from your feet.  Your feet make Ganga pure and Ganga is happy that you are here.  Where you wish to set your feet, the land and people become fortunate.  All the Sangat of Patna long for your feet and wish that you stay here forever.  Please accept our plea and stay with us.  If you really need to go, please leave Mataji: Mata Nanaki ji and Mata Gujri ji here.  This is your house and please don’t take Mataji with you.  We will make sure that we serve the mothers well.  We will worship the feet of Mataji and be blessed as we did yours.  Our wishes will be fulfilled then.  We have wanted you to come for a long time, but now you are leaving.  We hope that you will come back here soon.  Keeping Mataji here will give us hope that you will return one day.  Please don’t doubt us.  We are all your servants and this is our plea.  We will serve Mataji day and night.”  Guru Sahib saw the love in the hearts of the people of Patna.  He saw that these rich people come to do Seva and have killed their egos.  Guru Sahib looked towards Bhai Kirpal Chand ji and said: “Kirpal Chand ji, please stay here with your sister and Mata Nanaki ji.  I will go to the East and visit the Sikhs.  I will visit the Teeraths.  I won’t take a Dhera.  Only the army and the saint Sadhoos will go with me.  I will travel and fulfill the wishes.”  Guru Sahib’s original plan was to leave the Matas here.  Mata Nanaki ji heard and said to Guru ji with love: “I live to see your face, my son.  This gives me peace.  You are now leaving me and going on ahead.”  Satguru Sahib ji said to Mataji: “please don’t worry Mataji.  Your desire to see your grandson will be fulfilled very soon.  I have to go visit the Sikhs.  They have been praying for me to come for a very long time, with faith and devotion.”  Giving hope to all, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji decided to go to the East.

12-3 The King meets Guru Sahib

Nighttime had fallen and Satguru ji sat down on his bed.  As Guru Sahib was about to lay down, Mata Gujri ji came to make a request: “Sri Prabhoo ji, you had come to visit the Teeraths.  Your Sangat is everywhere.  You came to bless the Sikhs of the East and left our state of Punjab behind.  We came to another land.  You left your relatives and family behind in Punjab, and now you are going on ahead.  Why are you leaving us here and going further ahead, alone?  Your glory is spread throughout the lands afar.  The Sikhs love you.  New Sangat has joined and are still joining on a daily basis.  Wherever you go, people bow to you.  You are respected everywhere.  I am not worried for you, because nobody can do any harm to you.  Please consider the fact that you are going to a very far away land, all alone.  My brother Kirpal Chand was with you and you are not taking him either.  Mata Nanaki ji keeps reminding us of a grandson that is to be born that will establish the Dharma and be a great warrior who will be more glorious that the full moon.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji made this prophecy and we know that his words will come true.  Mata ji is waiting for her grandson.  Mataji’s words are also true.  She has a lot of patience.  She knows the future.  Whatever she says becomes true.  She said that time is very near as well, of when your son is about to be born.  You are leaving us before your son is going to be born.”  Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji thought of his father, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, the greatest warrior and saint, and folded his hands.  He bowed his head and said: “have faith in the prophecy of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.  You are about to give birth and that is why I am not taking you along.  The Sangat is here and they will serve you.  Living here would be very peaceful for you.  I will be going to the Teeraths.  I will go to Bangladesh and back.  The glory of the Sodhi’s is about to be born from your womb.  When he will turn five years of age, we will take him back to Punjab.  We will visit the Teeraths of the Gurus and bathe in the holy Sarovars.”  Guru ji spoke sweet words and gave his wife hope.  Mata Gujri ji went quiet as she heard her husband’s words.  She was obedient.  She was not happy but not worried either.  She set the plate for Guru ji’s dinner, and Guru ji had his dinner.  Guru ji was to save the Hindu Dharma.  Guru Sahib then laid down on his long bed, as Guru Sahib had a great height.  The bed was soft, like bubbles in the ocean.  Guru Sahib was the calmest person anyone had ever seen.  He had small and big pillows on the bed.  The sheets were tied with silk ropes along with zarri tassels.  There was a flower garland on the head board.  Guru ji was the Giver of Mukti.

Guru Sahib woke up before the last watch of the night and got up to bathe.  After bathing he sat down and immersed himself into his Aatma.  He then went towards the Divan.  The Sangat came to visit Guru Sahib.  It was like the stars around the moon as he sat in the Sangat.  The radiant moon.

The messenger from Jaipur/Jodhpur had arrived and bowed to Guru Sahib.  He received permission and sat down.  When it was his time to speak, he got up and said: “Guru ji, I come from Jodhpur with a message from Raja Bishan Singh.  He bows to your feet and sends his request.  He has heard of your glories and would like to be in your divine presence.  You protect the ones who come to your sanctuary and destroy their obstacles.  Raja Bishan Singh is facing a very turbulent time and is requesting your blessings.  Please help us in our time of need.  You are the Deena Bandhu.  Raja Bishan Singh is going to Kamroop to win the land.  We have heard of the undefeatable magicians and humbly request you to come with us and protect us.  This is my King’s message: The Emperor Aurangzeb has given us this mission which we cannot refuse.  We are in a bad situation where death is dancing around us, regardless of the outcome.  Nobody has defeated the people of Kamroop in battle as they know magic.  My grandfather Maan Singh won Kabul.  He was strong and radiant.  Even he went mad and died at Brahmaputra River.  If you, Guru Sahib, would come along with me, I am confident that their magic will not work on me.  I can only win this battle with your help.  Your lotus feet are the ship that can save me in this ocean of war.  The glory of your father is sung in the houses of the Rajputs when he assisted the release of our Kings from Gwalior.  You are generous.  You have helped whenever we have asked for your help.  I would like to come visit you in Patna.  My request is for you to stay in Patna and not leave for anywhere.  I will come see you as fast as I can.  I will go with you under your command.”  Guru Sahib heard the message and was pleased with the humble request.  He asked the messenger for the whole story.

Guru Sahib waited for Bishan Singh.  Bishan Singh arrived with his army and ministers after 11 days.  It was a great army that came along with Bishan Singh as the Emperor’s army and all of the Rajput forces were with him.  The army was huge and looked like a river coming.  They camped along the shores of the river.  Many Nagaras would sound day and night.  Many battle standards with elephants and horses were present.  Camels, with war drums tied to them, were sent as well.  There were thousands of tents set up.  When Bishan Singh came, he realized that Guru Sahib had accepted his request and stayed in Patna, waiting for him.  The messenger came to meet Bishan Singh and said: “you are fortunate my King.  Guru Sahib was about to leave, but stayed and waited for you once he heard your message with love.  He was pleased with your show of love.  I gave him your message and he accepted it.  There will be a Divan in the last watch of the day and you are asked to come to the Guru’s court during that time.  He will fulfill your wish then.”  When Bishan Singh heard this message, he was over-joyed and relieved.  He now had hope that he would be saved.  Bishan Singh set up camp and bathed as he had come from Jodhpur/Jaipur to Patna, which is a very long way.  He wore new clothes and donned his weapons: sword and shield.  He tied his Pugri and Kalgi.  He brought many gifts and took his highest-ranking officers along.  Bishan Singh did not wear shoes.  He walked barefoot towards the court.  Bishan Singh’s servants laid down rolls of carpets for him to walk on, to go to the Guru’s court, when they heard that he was not going to wear any shoes.  As soon as Bishan Singh saw the rolls of carpet, he asked for them to be removed.  He wanted to walk truly barefoot to meet the Guru.  He began to walk towards the court and caught a glimpse of the Guru from far away.  He saw the strong, broad body of Guru Sahib.  He was tall and had a solid body that was made from years of exercise.  He looked like Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, with his handsome look and broad shoulders.  He had massive arms from years of training.  He was quick and agile as he hunted regularly.  Seeing the Guru, Bishan Singh bowed down from far away.  He kept on repeating to himself: “I seek your protection oh Guru!”  He came into the presence of Guru Sahib and bowed his head.  With folded hands, Bishan Singh spoke: “your servant comes to your feet.  I am now in your sanctuary Guru Sahib, please protect me.  Hold my arm.”  Guru Sahib looked at Bishan Singh and smiled.  He gave him hope.  He asked him to take a seat in his court and spoke to him: “Bishan Singh, anyone who comes to the house of the Guru with love, does not leave empty-handed.  This is Guru Nanak Sahib ji’s house, whatever you ask for, you shall receive.  You want to win Kamroop; I will help you win that land.  You will be victorious and you will be praised throughout the land.  There is no task that cannot be completed in the house of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Have faith and let go of your worries.  Do Simran on Guru Nanak Dev ji and distribute the Karah Prashaad.  Guru Nanak Dev ji will bless you.  Guru Sahib eats the Karah Prashaad via the Sangat.  When the Sikh Sangat eats the Karah Prashaad, your wish will be granted.  You will win Kamroop.  Do the Simran of the Satguru and destroy your doubts that are in your heart.”  Bishan Singh folded his hands and spoke: “Guru Sahib, I have full faith in your words.  My mother told me about your glories.  I have heard about your generous nature.  I come to your sanctuary.  Since I heard about you, I’ve been longing to meet you.  This situation is just an excuse to meet you.  To be in your presence is a blessing.  I will be saved by your teachings.  It seems as though destiny has conspired with the universe to conjure these events so that I may meet you and be blessed.  The company of Saints is not something Kings can have easy access to.  I have hope and faith in you, Guru Sahib.”  Bishan Singh’s eyes had great relief in them now.  He bowed to Guru ji.  He then retired to his camp and asked his soldiers to clean their weapons.  He celebrated.  He fired his canons as a salute to Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji.  The Sangat of Patna were discussing amongst themselves of how Guru Sahib will go with Bishan Singh and win Kamroop.  They praised Guru ji: “Guru ji was already ready to go.  The Raja came with fear to Guru ji.  His grandfather died in Kamroop.  The people of Kamroop are magical.  He wants to go with Guru ji so the magic won’t work on him.”

Bishan Singh had Karah Prashaad made and distributed to the Sangat of Patna, openly.  Bishan Singh received Charan Pahul from Guru Sahib and became his Sikh.  He then only listened to Guru Sahib and followed his advice.  Guru Sahib then made preparations, along with Bishan Singh, and everyone headed out towards Kamroop with the great army.

12-4 The Mother of Bulaaki Das in Dhakka

Satguru ji gave the orders and the armies were mobilized.  Bishan Singh was very happy.  There was a great force that went towards Kamroop.  Many Sikhs and Fakirs had also gone along with Guru Sahib in bliss.  Guru Sahib ji bowed to Mata Nanaki ji.  Guru Sahib ji gave hope to Mata Gujri ji and asked her to recite the Satnam, day and night.  Bhai Kirpal Chand ji and others were given the duty to take care of and protect everyone.  The Sangat was asked to serve everyone well.  Guru ji blessed everyone.  Guru Sahib headed towards Assam with Raja Bishan Singh.  The army followed, travelling towards Bengal.  The Nagaras and instruments sounded as they rode out.

There was a village called Mungher near the banks of Ganga on the way.  Satguru ji stopped there.  The Sangat of Mungher came to meet Guru Sahib, bringing many types of gifts.  They all bowed with faith to Guru ji’s feet.  Guru Sahib blessed everyone who came to see him.  The people brought gifts without delay.  Guru ji fulfilled their wishes.  Guru Sahib spent many days there and illuminated the great wisdom of Sikhi.  Guru Sahib gave the sermon of the True Name, Satnam.  He blessed his Sangat with Mukti.

From Mungher, along with the army, horses, Nagaras and elephants, Guru Sahib went on ahead.  The king and the army followed.  There was a lot of noise as they travelled.  Many horses made noise as they travelled in lines.  The elephants walked with flags.   They looked like mountains with wings.  The Howdahs swayed with the tassels tied to them as the elephants moved.  The army was strong with many rich officers and generals.  The army eventually reached a city.  The city was named Raajmahal.  Many horses and elephants entered this city along with the army.  The palanquins were set down.  The soldiers wore weapons and nice clothes.  The canons were set down and the camps were set.  The army set up camp.  Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji’s Dhera was set up as well.  Guru Sahib did not go inside the city.  His camp was on the outer-skirts of the city.  The Sangat of Raajmahal found out and started to collect the Dasvands from the other Sikhs.  They did not come to see Guru Sahib right away.  They were too busy collecting the money.  Guru Sahib in the meantime, went on ahead.  These people were not devoted to the Guru, they didn’t come to see Guru Sahib first.  Guru ji noted that the people were not filled with love for the Guru.  As Guru Sahib went on ahead, without seeing anyone, the Sangat of Raajmahal did not seize the opportunity and regretted it their whole life as they missed Guru Sahib’s meeting.  Guru ji is hungry for love, not money.  The foolish people did not know the greatness of Guru ji.  The Guru was at their doorstep and they did not go to see Guru Sahib.  Without good karma, nothing can be achieved.  This is what happens to the unfortunate.  The people of Raajmahal did not have the destiny nor karma to see Guru Sahib.

Guru Sahib went on ahead to a city called Maalda.  There was a Dharamsala built there, where the Sikhs gathered for Keertan.  Guru Sahib visited the Dharamsala but the Sangat of Maalda did not come either.  No one did seva and no one was rewarded for their Seva.  Guru Sahib saw that the Dharamsala was there, but no Langer or Sangat.  Guru Sahib asked: “this is such a big city with a Dharamsala.  Why isn’t there any sangat or Langar here?  There is no Divan here nor is there anyone reading Bani.  Why is it empty?  I saw nobody coming or going.  There is no caretaker.”  The Sikhs of the area said to Guru Sahib: “Guru Sahib, there is a Mela today in the nearby village of Pandooay which occurs every year.  They are all gone there and will be back in two days.  Everyone is gone.  If you would kindly wait two days, the Sangat would return and be able to come to do your seva.”   After listening to their excuse, Guru Sahib spoke casually: “these people are not deserving of Sikhi.  These people are fond of the worldly Melas.  They won’t be able to meet me.  They do not understand Gurmat.  I will stay here tonight but I have to go tomorrow morning.”  There was a Halwai Sikh from the city of Maalda who was a devout and humble Sikh.  The cook came and grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  The cook said: “Guru Sahib, you have fulfilled my wishes.  You have come to this city to give me your divine visit.  You have fulfilled all of my Ardaas.  I am blessed with your Darshan.  Oh Deen Dayal, I come to your shelter.  I am a sinner.  I have one request: I make very tasty sweets and Pakvaans.  I would like to present these sweets for you.  Please have compassion and accept my food.”  Guru Sahib saw his love and said: “I will wait for you to cook your food.”  The cook was happy and prepared the tastiest dishes and sweets.  He presented them in front of Guru Sahib with a lot of love.  Guru Sahib was very happy to eat his prepared dishes.  Seeing the love, Guru ji accepted all his food.  The Sangat and the servants along with Guru Sahib were also given the food.  Guru Sahib ate the food and cleaned his hands.  Guru Sahib blessed the cook.  The Sikh was happy and blessed in a moment.  Guru ji moved on ahead to the next city.

Guru Sahib headed into the direction of Dhakka next.  As Guru Sahib travelled, thousands of Sikhs would come to meet Guru Sahib along the way.  The Sangat was blessed to see Guru Sahib and their wishes were fulfilled.  Guru ji blessed the Sangat with his Darshan.  Whatever the Sikhs wished for, Guru ji fulfilled them.  Food was brought with love.  Many Sikhs would bring Langar for Guru Sahib and the Sangat with him.  Some would bring clothes or horses.  Some would invite Guru Sahib to their homes and ask him to stay the night.  The Sikhs met Guru ji with love.  Guru Sahib would not stay more than two nights. Bishan Singh’s army would travel alongside Guru Sahib as well.  They would set up camp together.  Sometimes, Guru Sahib would go stay with the army and sometimes with the devout Sikhs. Sometimes Guru ji would stay with the beloved Sikhs.

After a while, Guru Sahib reached Dhakka.  The army followed.  Everyone set up camp there, outside of the city.  Guru Sahib entered the city and met the Masand.  The name of the Masand was Bhai Bulaaki Das ji.  Bhai Bulaaki Das ji’s mother was very old and she had a wish to have the Darshan of Guru Sahib.  She had been waiting for a very long time with love.  She had a very beautiful bed built with silk sheets and tassels.  The mother would worship the bed, day and night.  She would not let anyone else sleep in that room.  She had faith that Guru Sahib would come one day.  She would say: “when Guru Sahib comes to Dhakka, Guru Sahib will sit on this bed and fulfill my wishes.  My wishes will be fulfilled then.”  She had prepared a cloth from a fine cotton and made a chola for Guru Sahib.  She prepared the chola with love.  She would burn incense and light ghee lamps in that room to do Pooja.  She would read Gurbani day and night.  She would fix her focus on Guru Sahib and meditate on him.  She wished for Guru ji’s Darshan.  She said: “my time is almost done.  Please come to see me once.”  Her love grew everyday for Guru ji.  She wanted Guru ji to be compassionate and come to her home.  She wanted Guru ji to sit on the bed, wear the chola and eat her food, made by her.  The Omniscient One heard the mother’s plea.

Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji headed towards Bhai Bulaaki Das ji’s home.  He reached the door and told the servant to tell the mother of Bulaaki Das: “go and tell the owners that Guru Tegh Bahadhur has come.”  As soon as the mother heard Guru Sahib’s name, she came running and grabbed his feet.  She said to Guru Sahib: “I am a sacrifice unto this time!  You fulfilled my wish!  You have blessed me, Guru Sahib, with your visit.  I have been waiting for you for a very long time.”  She brought Guru Sahib inside the house and had him sit on the bed that she had prepared.  With great joy, she took out the chola that she had made and presented it to Guru Sahib.  Guru ji wore the Chola with love.  He was happy to wear it.  She lighted incense and ghee lamps and did the Aarti of Guru Sahib.  She did his Pooja with love.  The old mother was over-joyed.  There was no limit to her happiness.  She was so full of love that her throat swelled up and could not talk.  She wanted to sing the glories of the Guru but could not let the words out.  Her eyes shed tears of bliss.  It was like a pauper receiving the riches of the world.  She kept on staring at the face of the Guru like a Chakor looking at a full moon.  She then stared at Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji saw the love in the mother.  With love, Guru Sahib spoke to the mother: “oh mother, I’ve only come to Dhakka because of your love.  Your love has delighted my heart.  I am in your command.  I wanted to see your love.  Whatever you wished for, I have fulfilled it now.  You wanted to give me a chola, I have worn it.  You wanted me to sit on your bed, here I am sitting on it.  Ask me for anything you want, oh mother.  I will give you what you want.  I have opened the treasury for you.”  The mother heard Guru Sahib and became humble.  She folded her hands and said: “Guru ji, I would like to see you all the time.  Till the last breath in my body, I would like to see you every day.  This is my wish.  Please complete it.  Please visit me everyday.”  Guru Sahib heard her impossible wish and said: “you have asked for something very rare.  I see your love.  But because I promised, I will give you your wish.  When you wake up at Amrit Vela and take a bath, sit in meditation.  I will come visit you in your heart.  I am a slave to love.  I have given this to you.  You will get all the bliss of the mind.”  She was happy to get her wish.  Guru Sahib made sure she was fully satisfied with what she asked for.  The Mata was given Mukti.  She was a sacrifice unto Guru ji.  She was the most fortunate one.  Why wouldn’t she receive Mukti?

12-5 Dhakka, Bhai Natha

Bhai Bulaaki Das ji was the Head Masand of Dhakka.  He gathered all of the Sangat and brought them to Guru Sahib.  As the Sikhs heard of Guru ji’s arrival, they eagerly gathered gifts.  They wanted Guru ji’s Darshan.  They wanted to bow and be blessed.  Bhai Bulaaki Das ji brought the Sangat, singing Gurbani.  Their eyes shed tears as they walked.  They all came slowly with a lot of love.  They bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  They brought many gifts and money for Guru Sahib and presented them.  The Sangat had brought special cloth of Mulmul (Muslin) Dastaar for Guru Sahib.  As they did the Darshan of Guru ji, they were drenched in love.  They bowed and did their Ardaas.  They sat down after getting permission to sit.  The Sangat had great love for Guru Sahib and performed Shabad Kirtan.  They did Keertan for a long time.  Guru Sahib was very happy to sing Kirtan along.  Filled with compassion, Guru Sahib said: “Dhakka is a solid centre for Sikhi.  It is the home of Sikhi.  You have made me very happy with Kirtan.  You sang with love.  I am filled with love as well.”  The whole Sangat got up and folded their hands.  Bhai Bulaaki Das ji was the leader.  Bhai Bulaaki ji Das led the Sangat in doing the Aarti of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji.  Incense was burned, ghee lamps were lit, garlands of flowers were placed around the neck of Guru Sahib.  Rose water and sandalwood essences were sprayed everywhere.  Bhai Bulaaki Das ji brought a large bowl and placed it under Guru Sahib’s feet.  He washed Guru ji’s feet with clean, fresh water and wiped his feet.  He then took the water, washed from the feet of the Guru, and gave it to the Sangat.  This was referred to as Charanamrit.  This was the ritual by which a person became a Sikh of the Guru.  (This was later changed to the “Khanda ki Pahul” by Guru Gobind Singh ji) Guru Sahib saw the love and spoke: “I have seen the deep love within all of you.  Your love has brought me to Dhakka.  Your Seva is great.  I would like you to make a beautiful Dharamsala here so that Gurbani can be sung, day and night.  There needs to be a saint, who would stay at the Dharamsala: who will serve the Sangat with Langar and sing Gurbani.  All of you would be able to get together there and connect with Kirtan in Sangat.  You will be blessed then.  At this place, you will be able to celebrate the Sikh Jor Melas.  As you sing Kirtan, your troubles and pains will be gone.  Do the Simran of Guru.”  The Sangat heard this and agreed to Guru Sahib’s command.  The Sangat folded their hands and spoke with humility to Guru Sahib: “Guru Sahib, in Mathurapur, there is a Dharamsala made during the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.  There was a Saint named Almast ji, who started the Dharmsala.  He would do Katha of Gurbani.  He had a student, who had his own student.  He is known as Bhai Natha ji.  He lives in Dhakka.  Guru Har Rai Sahib ji sent Bhai Natha ji to Dhakka to preach Sikhi.  Bhai Natha ji has been here from many years now.  He would get beautiful cholay and Dastaars made here and sent to Guru Har Rai Sahib ji.  (Guru Har Rai Sahib ji wore a chola with 100 pleats) All of the cholas went from here.  Bhai Natha ji is still residing at that Dharamsala and does the Seva.  We would send many expensive cloths for the Chananis (canopies) and other items from here.  He’s only here for that Seva.  He is a very good person, but we have one complaint.  Bhai Natha ji is a short-tempered person and fights with everyone.  He speaks rudely to Bhai Bulaaki Das ji as well.  He does not hate anyone but his speech is very harsh.  He does not get along with anyone for this reason.  He lives in his own world and is only focused on Kirtan and Seva.  He does not know the way of the world.  Everyone is afraid of talking to him for this reason.”  Bhai Bulaaki Das ji confirmed the Sangat’s complaints, as he was also a victim of Bhai Natha ji’s foul words: “he is a nice person but he fights with the Sangat.  He does not keep love with anyone.  He always speaks harshly.  People tolerate him as a saint.  The other Masands, he doesn’t care of anyone.”  Bhai Natha ji had a great Nitnem, but he spoke very harsh.  Guru Sahib heard the complaints and laughed.  He then spoke: “Natha is a person that lives in my presence.  He is with me all the time but nobody else can see him.  You all see him in Dhakka, but he actually lives with me, all the time.”  A servant was sent to get Bhai Natha ji.

Bhai Natha ji arrived and was asked to be seated in the Sangat.  Guru Ji spoke to Bhai Natha ji: “Natha Bhai, everyone is complaining about you.  They say that you swear and speak foul words to them.  You fight with the Sangat as well and don’t ask for any advice from any of the members of the Sikh community.  They say you don’t think before you speak.”  Bhai Natha ji heard Guru Sahib’s word and spoke: “Guru Sahib, these people have rock-like wisdoms and fragile minds.  They speak nonsense.  They do not know what I say.”  Guru Sahib heard his words and began to laugh out aloud.  “Bhai Natha ji said: I’ve never sworn to any of these (swear word) people.”  Guru Sahib laughed even harder and the Sangat began to laugh aloud as well.  They pointed that out to Guru ji.  Guru Sahib said to the Sangat: “Bhai Natha ji is pure-hearted.  To swear is his nature.  If he ever swears at you, consider it as his blessing.  He has no vice in his heart.  This is how he speaks.  Don’t get angry at him.  His heart is pure.  He is a carefree Fakir.  Bhai Natha is a Bhrahmgyaani and is genuinely concerned for everyone’s welfare.  Natha has a way of talking that cannot change.  He has no hatred towards anyone.  He says what is on his mind.  He is a Saint and is only concerned about the name of the Guru and the Seva of the Dharmsala.  He only listens to the Guru.  He has the love of Bhakti in his heart.  He obeys my commands.  He is drenched in the love of Bhagti.  The Sangat and the Masand, I ask all of you, not to be hurt with his words.  Love him well and treat him with respect.  If you listen to me, you will be happy.  Don’t let jealousy and treachery come into your hearts and stay coloured in the love of the Guru.  Keep your heart pure.  Take out the filth of Karma and wandering from your mind.  Recite the true name, Satnam, and be free from the cycle of life and death.  Your bonds will be broken and you will be able to live a peaceful life without any complications and pain.  You will cross this huge world ocean.  Recite Gurbani and ponder on its meanings.”  Guru Sahib thus spoke to the Sangat about the Satnam.  He destroyed their problems and pains.  Guru Sahib would sit in Sangat and perform Kirtan everyday.  For many days Guru Sahib stayed here and blessed the sangat.  People came in the thousands.

It was time to leave and Guru Sahib gave the order to move out.  As Guru Sahib was about to leave, Bhai Bulaaki Das ji’s mother came to meet Guru Sahib.  She quickly came and grabbed Guru Sahib’s feet with love.  She shed tears from her eyes and said to Guru Sahib: “oh Prabhoo, I’ve heard that you are leaving.  I wanted to see you everyday.  That’s what I had asked from you.  Fulfill my wish.  Please don’t leave us.  Live here forever.”  Guru Sahib said to her: “oh mother, it was because of your love that I travelled so far to see you.  You are now old and your age is almost finished.  You will go straight to Sach Khand.  I have many tasks to do.  I will ask you for permission before I leave.  I have a duty from Akaal Purakh to meet other people.  I don’t want to upset you.  I will give you a suggestion: make a painting of me.  I will visit you through the painting everyday.  When you have the painting made, hang it above the bed that I sat on.  Wake up everyday and take a bath.  Sit in meditation, and focus on my picture.  Do Pooja of the picture like you did the Pooja of my body.  You will be able to visit me everyday.  During your end time, your Aatma will come to me.” The mother heard this and was really happy.

Bhai Bulaaki Das ji’s mother went to the bazaar and brought an artist.  The artist came to her home to paint Guru Sahib’s portrait.  She gave him a lot of money and said to the artist: “this is my Guru and I want you to make his picture just as he is.”  The wise artist bowed to Guru Sahib and eagerly began to paint. He painted Guru ji as his clothes were.  He painted with love.  He began painting Guru Sahib and started from his feet.  He noticed the tall strong body of Guru Sahib and was very impressed and in awe.  Guru ji’s eyes were like the lotus petals.  As soon as he looked towards Guru Sahib’s face, he would become so overwhelmed from the radiance that he dropped his paintbrush.  The radiance was putting the artist in a trance.  The artist was so confused as to how he would ever paint Guru ji’s portrait.  Guru Sahib took notice and got up.  He walked towards the easel with his painting.  He took the paintbrush and painted his own face, Dumalla and beard.  Whoever saw this, they were amazed and happy.  This painting resides in the Calcutta Museum in modern times.  The Sangat and Bhai Bulaaki Das ji were surprised to see this artist, who was the best in his class and not able to paint Guru Sahib’s face.  When the painting was complete, Guru Sahib picked up the portrait and gave it to Bhai Bulaaki Das ji’s mother.  The mother then looked at the painting and compared it to Guru Sahib.  She was in bliss.  It was the same form.  She closed her eyes and pictured Guru Sahib and the painting.  She opened her eyes and saw the eyes in the painting blink.  She was amazed to see this.  The mother spoke: “this painting is exactly like you.”  She treated the picture like it was Guru ji himself.  She put the painting on the bed.  She felt he was sitting there.  She would see the painting and focus on it whenever she would do Simran.  She would see the eyes blink every time she did the picture’s Darshan.  Her heart was calm.  She did the picture’s Pooja everyday.

Guru Sahib then got ready and left for his travels.  He joined the camp of Bishan Singh.  The Sangat went very far to see Guru ji off.  Guru ji gave everyone leave and left, sitting in a palanquin.  Bishan Singh came out ahead and greeted Guru Sahib from a distance.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and brought Guru ji to the camp.  Kavi Santokh Singh ji is a sacrifice unto the great Guru.
