11-51 Brahma Continues the Ancient History
Brahma continued to tell the Devatas the Katha: “oh Devatas, understand how Bhagwati won the war. Victorious in battle, she stood and looked towards Dusht Daman with great joy and said: “oh Tapasvi, there is no tapasvi like you. You are the Tapp Purshotam. You are the son of the Power of Akaal Purakh. You are the greatest amongst beings. You are the Purshotam. You killed many sinners and demons in war with your effort. Many are lying dead on the battlefield. You raged a fierce and difficult battle. Your roar was so powerful and strong, that many great warriors became petrified and ran like cowards from the battlefield, losing their patience. Whoever faced you, they went to the home of death. You were a great help in this war for killing these Daynts. I am grateful for your effort. When you will manifest the Guru Purshotam avatar of Guru Nanak Dev ji, I will be with you and help you. When you call me, I will come to you with joy. I am really impressed and happy with your effort. I will reside within the Khalsa and will always be with the Khalsa. Whatever is in your heart, ask me for a boon. I will give you anything you want. Your body has come from the radiance of Rishi Samundh’s tapp. Rishi Samundh is one in the same as Akaal Purakh. This body that you have will not diminish till you want it to. You will be Chiranjeev and stay in joy. You will live as long as you want to. You will be youthful for Lakhs of years. You will stay here and do tapp for many eras. Your name is “Dusht Daman” from now, the killer of sinners. You will have a lot of Sangat and your name will be glorious for eras to come. Your radiance will be the same as mine. The appearance that you have right now: your Dumaalaa, your weapons, your hair, your beard, this will remain your form for eras to come. Your name is Dusht Daman, my son, for you are the slayer of demons. I will be with you to help you.” Hearing Durga, Dusht Daman spoke to the Goddess and made his requests: “Oh Divine Mother, I will take on the name Singh in Kaliyuga and I will remain with unshorn hair. I will not wear the sacred thread: Janyow, nor will my Sikhs. I will kill all the sinners. My Panth Khalsa will destroy them. Oh One with Lotus Eyes, I will kill the sinners with a fierce radiance. The people that bully the Saints and poor and do not let them live in peace. I will destroy those tyrants. I will give the gift of Bir Ras (the warrior’s emotion) Gurbani to the world. Only the warriors will understand it. Those who will read it, will be filled with your power. This Gurbani will be for warriors. It will give the pleasure of the world and Mukti. These will be received with ease. My Sikhs will achieve Mukti and freedom from physical and spiritual bondage. They will detach themselves from the cycle of birth and death. I will destroy the sinners. The path of the Dharma will be established. Oh mother, I only ask for one gift: I wish to establish the Dharma of Akaal Purakh and create an order of Soldier Saints that will protect the saints and punish the sinners. My Khalsa will be ready for war.” Bhagwati (another name for the Goddess) was pleased to hear his words. The Mother replied and spoke about the future: “the first part of Kaliyuga will be very bad. All these demons that you have killed will be born in that time. Remember me, during that time, and I will come to assist you. The holy word Oankaar will sound and I will enter your body and the Khalsa. I will live in the Sword. Do not fall into the attachments of your own family. You will live in the one state of stillness and will not be affected by pain or joy. Stay in this body till then. Till the time comes, stay here and do tapp. Do Tapp with joy. Akaal Purakh Vahiguru will take on a human form in Kaliyuga and will go through nine bodies. You will be the tenth body. The light of Akaal Purakh will gladly enter your body. You will be One with Ikankaar form. The great warrior, you will be, who will be known as “Guru Gobind Singh.” You and Akaal Purakh will be one in the same. There will be no difference between you and Akaal Purakh. You will give birth to the Panth Khalsa and kill the sinners. The Khalsa will establish the Dharma, the righteous way and will not discriminate between rich or poor; Hindu or Muslim. They will be praised.” The Ishwari of the universe was filled with a lot of love. She hugged Dusht Daman and embraced her son in a mother’s embrace. She said: “my son, take my small sword. Keep this small sword with you at all times. From the skin of the lion, the “Khal,” they were born; therefore, they will be known as the “Khalsa.” The Khalsa will be Kshatriya and ready to fight at all times like lions. They will have the radiance of the lion. The Khalsa will be steadfast in their way of life, the Rehit. If the Sikhs will not keep up with their way of life, they will not be prosperous. They will be in regret. If the Sikhs chase money and wealth, they will not succeed. Your Panth will be in pain if they do not follow the Rehit. The ones who fight in battle will receive Mukti.” Bhagwati showered Dusht Daman with immense love and went back to her timeless form and disappeared. Dusht Daman got his name and started to do Tapasya. Dusht Daman then turned to his father and went to his home. He went to Rishi Samundh and bowed to his feet. Rishi Samundh was happy with his son and said to him: “I am very proud of you, my son. You have won the love of Devi Chandi. You impressed the Shakti. She has given you many blessings and she will always be with you. You received a boon for battle. I gave you birth for war. You keep faith in war. War will live in your heart. You will be glorious and victorious in all your battles. This is the reason why I gave you birth. You will fight such fierce battles that the poor will no longer feel alone. You will protect the Dharma. When you will be a child on Earth, I will have to leave you and won’t be able to see your battles. Oh son, just as a flower appears all of a sudden, you appeared from my seat. You are the embodiment of power. You are the power of Akaal Purakh. You came from the dimension of Akaal Purakh to the earth so your name will be “Gobind.” The “Singh” status has been given to you by the Devi. Sit here and do tapp. When the time comes, you will appear in the world. The lions that came out of my meditation mat will also do tapp here and will be born as your Sikhs on Earth. Your radiance will be like the sun.” The great warrior listened on to his great father: “you are the follower of the Dharma. You are full of patience. You will destroy the sinners. You will always wield weapons. You have the ability to tolerate the intolerable. You have the power to bare the most extreme pain. Your task will be to save the children of the world and so you will have to ignore the pain of your own children. You are benevolent and generous, full of compassion. You are the sun of Gyaan. You carry a bow and arrows. You have a sharp sword. You can do the most difficult things.” Dusht Daman got the blessing from his father and said: “I will carry out your orders, oh Father. I will always obey you.” Dusht Daman bowed to his father’s feet and came to the mountain of Hemkunt. He began his tapp which carried out for many eras. He did his Tapp in many ways. He was on top of the highest mountains. He stayed in jungles and caves on the mountains. He was in places with no water. He did Tapp and tolerated pain. The great places, he stayed there without water. He stayed in desserts. He stopped his mind and took his breath up to his Dasam Duar. He sat in Samadhis for many years. He was blessed with a long life and the ability to die when he wished to. He took his body to the extremes of not eating and staying in cold mountains. Days would pass till he would drink water. We stayed long times without food. He tolerated heat and cold on his body. He stayed unwaivered. His mind didn’t go towards the world. He would stand on one leg for weeks and remain extremely still. He connected his mind to Akaal Purakh. He had tapped into the immense ocean of love. He meditated in many ways and kept his mind still.”
Brahma, the Vidhatta, then explained: “listen of Devatas, his Tapp is almost complete. It is now time that Dusht Daman will enter the worldly realm and take birth in a few days. He will come with his Sikhs. He will illuminate the radiant Panth soon. You should go and take birth as Gursikhs and join the army that Guru Gobind Singh ji will create. The duty of Brahmans and Kshatriyas have been forgotten. Tapp, humility, charity and faith are diminishing. The Lord will go to earth to re-establish this. There will be a third religion in the Bharat Khand (India) to relieve the Saints from the wrath of the sinners.” The Devatas were very surprised to hear all of this. They understood everything and then took birth in the houses of Gursikhs to see the life of Guru Gobind Singh ji. Seeing the corruption in Hind, the Karta Purakh wanted to give joy to his servants.
Kavi Santokh Singh ji will now discuss the meeting of Akaal Purakh and Dusht Daman. Akaal Purakh told his servants: “take the best Vessel and go and tell the great tapasvi, Dusht Daman, that I have summoned him. The tapasvi has been meditating on me for many ages. He and his Tapp have become one. He is in love with his tapp and is the greatest tapasvi ever. Go and bring my favorite child to me. His tapp has become the greatest and I am eager to see him. He has done Tapp for millions of years. There will never be a Tapasvi like him. He and I are one. There is no difference between him and I. It is time now that he immerses into my form. When you see him, his body has dried up and his bones can be seen. He is meditating on the Hemkunt mountain that has seven peaks. He is on the middle peak. His Tapp is strict. He stands like a dried tree and his mind is ever so still.” The servants of Akaal Purakh heard this and took the flying vessel. They went to go see the son of Akaal Purakh. The radiance of the vessel could not be described. The vessel was made of gold, jewels and diamonds. The doors had strands of flowers and pearls hanging from them. The gems shined like suns. There were lotuses and swans engrained into the vessel. Diamonds were engrained, which had work on them. There were domes on top of the vessel with ring chains around them. There were pearls hanging from the vessel. The Devatas would see this vessel and be astonished by the radiance of this vessel. They did its Aarti. The vessel would move at the speed of the mind. The pearls hung in the strands. It was a beautiful vessel. Expensive sheets were on the inside with round pillows. Some were dark, some were red and some were blue. There were gems in the walls. As the vessel travelled through the different dimensions, the Devatas and the people of the dimensions watched in amazement. It was as though thousands of suns coming together, travelling through the realms.
The vessel reached the middle peak of the 7 peaks of the Hemkunt Mountain. The servants got off the vessel and saw Dusht Daman. They folded their hands and delivered their message: “oh great tapasvi, you are the form of Tapp. Your tapp is praised by all. You are the greatest devotee of Akaal Purakh to ever exist. Please complete our wish. You are the Purshotam. You have completed your Tapasya. The Parmeshwar Parmatma, the complete being, Akaal Purakh has summoned you. Sit in the vessel and come to Sach Khand, the abode of Akaal Purakh. Your Tapp is now complete. Oh great being, you and Akaal Purakh are one in the same. Parmeshwar Parmathama has called you, please board the vessel and meet the creator of the universe. Do the Darshan of Akaal Purakh. Your wishes are now about to be fulfilled. You are the knower of all. You are the Bhrahmgyaani of the highest order. You made your heart calm with your Tapp. This is the command of Akaal Purakh. This is from the mouth of the Sri Akaal Purakh.” Dusht Daman heard the message. As he heard that Prabhoo Akaal Purakh has summoned him, Dusht Daman’s joy had no boundaries. His heart was filled with extreme love and joy. With the bliss, his eyes shed tears. His throat swelled with emotion. His body that had dried up, was now young and strong again. His students (lions) witnessed this miracle. Dusht Daman gave hope to his students and said: “I have been called to meet the creator at his abode. I will be back after meeting him. I will tell you what he says.” Dusht Daman ji bowed towards Akaal Purakh’s home and came to the vessel. He saw the pearl strands hanging from all sides. There was a great seat inside. Dusht Daman ji did 3 Parkarmas of the seat as it was Akaal Purakh ji’s seat. He then sat down with humility. He thought of the Param Guru, Akaal Purakh, and wished to see him.
11-52 Taking Leave From the House of Akaal Purakh
Dusht Daman bowed to the vessel as this was the vessel of Akaal Purakh. He encircled the middle seat three times with his hands folded and sat on the seat of Akaal Purakh. As the Munni, Dusht Daman ji, wished to move, the vessel began to fly. It looked like the sun moving. The vessel flew at the speed of the mind. It reached Sach Khand in a blink of an eye. The court of Akaal Purakh had countless saints, Mohammeds, Brahmas, Vishnus, Shivas and great warriors. Such beings stood with maces at the front door as guards. The glory of the house of Akaal Purakh cannot be put into words by any Kavi. The main gate of the court was really big. It looked like a mountain of silver. It was so shiny as if many suns had come together. The vessel was parked in front of the main gate. Dusht Daman ji came off the vessel and started to smile as soon as he saw the gate of the court of Akaal Purakh. His face was radiant like the full moon. The highest Devatas came to greet Dusht Daman ji with great respect. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and others came to take Dusht Daman ji into the court.
As soon as Dusht Daman came into the court, he saw the Prabhoo Akaal Purakh on his great throne. Dusht Daman ji bowed down in a straight form and laid down like a stick. His eyes drank the Amrit from the Darshan of Akaal Purakh. He couldn’t be satiated looking at Akaal Purakh. He folded his hands and stood up with respect. Dusht Daman ji began to sing the glories of Akaal Purakh. The names of Akaal Purakh that Dusht Daman uttered in front of Akaal Purakh was what became the Jaap Sahib. Dusht Daman ji bowed his head to the Creator many times. He praised Akaal Purakh with the names mentioned in Jaap Sahib. He kept saying: “Nameh, Nameh,” and bowed his head, over and over again.
Dusht Daman ji sang the glories of Akaal Purakh: “you are the light of all lights. Of all the creation, you are the master of all masters. I salute you whose name is true; your form is true; you are the conscious form in constant bliss; you exist above time; you are without illness, you are without form; you are the seed of all seeds; you are the cause of all causes; the greatest of great and smaller than small; you are forever in that still state, unchanged; you are the complete master and giver of all powers; you are the Mahadev of all Devatas; you are the fulfiller of wishes; the creator of creation; the saint of saints; the yogi of all yogis; the king of kings; the general of all generals; you have millions of arms, millions of heads; millions of eyes and ears; millions of noses; millions of mouths and millions of puranas. I salute you who is the creator, sustainer, and destroyer. I salute you who is the root of the five senses and the five prime elements. You are the one experiencing all of the senses in every life form. You are without form and limbs. You are forever. You create, sustain and destroy. You are never destroyed; you are the creator of all and the destroyer of all. I salute you who is the creator; you are Vishnu sleeping on Shaishnaag on the ocean; you are the Varaah Avatar who took the earth on his tusks; you are the death of death; the most beautiful is not close to the beauty of your toe; you are the most victorious. I salute you who is the war and the one who fights the war. You are the peace of peaceful; you are the darkness and the light of all lights. Everything exists in you and you exist in everything. I salute thee, I salute thee, I salute thee, I salute thee. You are round, without beginning and end; the unending light. You are without beginning, without end; without fault; without punishment; you are the fiercest. The seven Loks are your head and the seven Pataals are your feet; the sun and moon are your eyes and fire is your mouth. You are the most caring, without death, and destroyer of pain on both worlds. You are always victorious. You are the treasure of all the lights. You are the blissful conscience that is always with the Bhagats. I bow to you with my mind, wisdom, conscious and the sense of existence. I place my head at your lotus feet. Oh father, please command me. Order me why you have called me.”
Akaal Purakh ji, the Sri Purshotam, Sri Parmatma, Sri Parmeshwar, the purest complete form; the light of lights and the highest being; the complete Lord, that embodiment, which is not seen by the wicked but assists all the devotees, the form with no beginning nor end; the helper of his servants; whose toenails are more beautiful than the whole universe, spoke to Sri Dusht Daman ji smilingly and with great love in a very deep and slow tone: “Dush Daman! I created you out of my own will. The King of Tapasvis thought of me and so you came from my radiance to fight the great battle. For this reason, you are created out of me. You are my son; you are the same as me. You have done great Tapps and there is no tapasvi like you. No one has been able to do a tapp as you did. You did a tapp from Satyuga, Tretayuga and Dwaperyug. Now you must take an Avatar in Kaliyuga on Earth. Do my task with my command. The sinners have made life very difficult for saints and devotees. You must become their saviour. Go as a human. Go and do the drama of war and remind everyone of Satnam. Give them the gift of Bhagti. Tell everyone that they must remember me in order to be in peace and one with me.”
Dusht Daman ji heard this and folded his hands. He said: “my Lord, there are many problems with going there. There are many types of Parvirtis (household and societal duties) there. I do not wish to go back into the world. I do not wish to be stuck into the delusion of life and its desires. Kaliyuga is very strong and is taking over the minds of people. My conscious is set in your feet, Akaal Purakh ji. I am filled with your love and bliss. I do not wish to leave this bliss and go into the world.”
Akaal Purakh ji heard this and convinced Dusht Daman ji by recalling the conversation he had with the Sri Devi about starting the new Panth: “you took many boons from the Shakti. The Goddess had promised you that she will be with you in Kaliyuga and will assist you every step of the way. The blessings that you asked for, you need to utilise them. That time is near. You must create the highest Panth of the Khalsa. You will show everyone the path of Prema Bhagti. The Kshatriya Dharma is not seen anywhere in the world. The Kshatriya way of life needs to be re-established. The sinners have taken over the world. Greatness has diminished. When I created the world, I made the Daynts first. Many messengers, such as Maha Deen, I had sent to Earth to remind everyone of my name. I sent prophets with my message but they started their own paths and did not tell anyone of the Satnam wisdom. They didn’t preach of the Parbrahm. They did not preach my existence and left their own symbols. My son, you must go and establish my path, where devotees can easily reach my abode. Give them the Rehit, the way of life where they remember me; teach them to be tolerant and to speak the truth. Establish this beautiful path.”
After convincing Dusht Daman ji, Akaal Purakh placed Dusht Daman in his lap and said to him: “I created you as my son. You will have all of my powers. Preach the way of the Panth Khalsa. The light of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is great. It is on Earth and is in its ninth incarnation. The ninth incarnation is the same Tapasvi that gave your existence light, just before you assisted the Goddess in her war with the demons. The ninth incarnation’s tapp is unmatched as well. He is the idol of calmness and serenity. He sees everyone as the same. Just as he was calm and serene as the Tapasvi, he is the same way on earth now. He did many yogas and yagnas to do my Bhagti. He has now called upon me to send you to his home as his son. The light of Guru Nanak Dev ji will come inside of you. You, Guru Nanak Dev ji, and Myself, we are all one in the same. You will become Guru Nanak Dev ji. Guru Nanak Dev ji is in me, I am in Guru Nanak Dev ji. Guru Nanak Dev ji will be in you, you will be in Guru Nanak Dev ji. Because you will be my form, you will have all of my powers and my status. You are my son. You are my form. There is no difference between Father and son. Go and establish the true Path. Establish the Dharma in the world. There is no other that can carry out this task. You are omnipotent. You will have four sons on Earth. I promise that you will not be attached to any family, sons, or relatives. Don’t hesitate or be lazy when you are to kill the sinners. Be brave and courageous in war. Illuminate the Simran of Satnam. Your Panth will be the true Kshatriya Panth, the Khalsa.”
Akaal Purakh kissed the forehead of Dusht Daman and blessed him with all of the powers. Just as a father loves his son, that is how Akaal Purakh ji loved Dusht Daman ji. He convinced his son with sweet words. He gave him wisdom and power. They were blessed words. Sri Dusht Daman ji heard this and stood up. He folded his hands and said: “the Panth will be established in the world only if you assist me in every step.” Dusht Daman ji obeyed and bowed his head many teams. “Oh Karta Purakh, Akaal; you are the Compassionate One, the Ikankaar. You are the supreme Guru of all,” said Dusht Daman. After bowing to Akaal Purakh ji, Dusht Daman ji left the Darbar of Akaal Purakh. He saw the vessel that brought him there. He bowed, sat in the vessel and headed back to Hemkunt.
11-53 The Light Comes to Tribaini
Dusht Daman ji came back to Hemkunt and called all of his students (who had been with him since Satyuga) together. He told them of his meeting with Akaal Purakh and the mission he was charged with from Akaal Purakh: “we will be changing our bodies and taking birth on Earth. All of you will take births in the houses of Sikhs. This is the command of the Sri Guru Akaal Purakh.” He gave them instructions: “All of you should come to the country in human form and follow the Kshatriya Dharam – the way of the warrior. Become a warrior and fight on the battlefield. Keep your hair unshorn and wear the Kachera. Keep weapons and wage war. Clean the world of sinners and restore stability. If you are victorious in war, you will be kings on Earth. If you die, you will go to Braham Lok (the home of Akaal Purakh). Serve the Satguru Akaal Purakh and kill your ego. Dying in war and becoming a Shaheed (martyr) is equal to the fruit of many eras of Yagnas and strict Tapps. There is gain in both scenarios. Keep your focus on me and keep your mind with the Guru. Be free of doubt and meditate on the name Satnam. This is the time of Kaliyuga, the Simran of Satnam is the easiest path to Mukti.” Dusht Daman ji, the Handsome One, gave his students this reward of doing tapp with him: they will go with him to Earth and be his Sikhs. They will live the Rehit and do the Simran of the Guru. They will live by the Kshatriya Dharma. “Keep the way of the warrior and the lifestyle of a Sikh. This will free you from the cycle of birth and death. You will stay with me forever in Sach Khand after we complete our task on Earth. You will get the bliss and joys of both worlds. This will be a new religion, that will be created upon the instructions of Akaal Purakh,” said Dush Daman ji. The Sikhs of Dusht Daman were very happy hearing this. They folded their hands and bowed their heads. They stood and said: “oh One with long and strong arms, we are ready to go to Earth with you, Lord. When you fought Bail and Subail, you fought and killed them alone. The battle was so intense that the Earth and the Devatas of Heaven all trembled. You killed the demons with such strength. You killed them with your arrows like Garud eating many snakes. You killed Bail and Subail and so you were called “Dusht Daman.” You love the battlefield. You killed the Asuras. You are the King of the battlefield. Lord, your strength and patience have no bounds. You are about to go into the Human realm and play on earth. Your “drama” will be a most heart-pleasing show to see. We will follow you. We will be by your side in battle. Nobody can face you on the battlefield. Nobody can tolerate your radiance.” Dusht Daman ji responded: “as Gurbar Sri Akaal ji commands, we will follow. I will give birth to the Panth Khalsa and fill it with great powers. The Khalsa will keep the Rehit and do strict Tapps. The Sikhs will do Simran of Satnam, read Gurbani, feed the world, serve the Saints and fight the war against tyrants. They will do Simran during war. Oh Sikhs, you must do this task with the command of the Purshotam. The Khalsa will be forever ready for war. This is what Akaal Purakh wanted. The way of the Vedas and the right to live within one’s own wish is in danger. The Khalsa will protect anyone whose rights are being violated. The Hindu Dharma needs to be saved. The tree of the radiance of the Turks needs to be broken. The Khalsa will be generous towards both. It will be above both. The Khalsa will have salvation and liberation from the cycle of birth and death and will enjoy the pleasures of life. Both Mukti and Bhugti will be on the palm of their hand. The Khalsa will be seen from miles away by their virtues. The Khalsa will be the master of the battlefield. The Khalsa will be without fear and will be deserving of salvation. It will love the battlefield. In Kaliyuga, this is the fastest way to Mukti. They will burn their desires and be drenched in the Name of Akaal.”
Rishi Dusht Daman ji, in the form of a Rishi, told his Sikhs about the future. Everyone was given leave. The wise Rishis all thought of the wisdom they received. Sri Dusht Daman ji went into the pond of Hemkunt and bathed his body. He then came out and sat on a rock, forming the Padamasana yogic pose. He sat on a Kush Asan. He pulled his puranas to his Dasam Duaar (Tenth Door or third eye) with all his might and pushed all of his energy through it. This caused his Dasam Duaar to explode, thus ending the body’s life. In order to take a birth on earth, the Prabhoo left his body by his own will. As he was blessed by the Goddess, this was the only way he had to end the life of his body. The 33 Crore Devatas witnessed this event and showered his body with flowers. This was the great warrior that fought with the demons for years and whose tapp was unmatched. The Devatas and Devis did Aarti (worshipping) of the body of Dusht Daman by playing conches, bells and war drums. Dhoop, incense and other fragrances were lit. The whole creation was looking towards this tapasvi’s great accomplishments. Everyone had their hands folded and showered his body with flowers. Bells were ringing. War drums were sounding. The Devatas shouted out “Jai Dusht Daman, Jai Dusht Daman!” This was the being that assisted the Goddess in the great war of the Gods and Demons. Once again, Dusht Daman was headed for battle against the tyrants, waging war on those who snatched the peace of the Saints.
We now go back to the history of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, who was at the holy site of Tribaini. Kirtan and Langar was continuous, day and night. Where the great Teerath was, Guru ji was living there. Mata Goojri ji was reading Gurbani and reciting the true name Satnam. Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji was donating money and household items to anyone who came. The purest acts took place. The Sadhoos were performing their yagnas and havans. Their pooja/aarti was continuous, day and night. They would also come to Guru Sahib for blessings and Langar. It was a very spiritual atmosphere with different religions performing their meditations and worships. Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji made sure everyone was getting Langar. He would make sure that delicacies were made and distributed. Guru ji purified all of the Teeraths. Prayaag raj is considered one of the holiest of the sites. It is the king of the Teeraths. Guru ji spent his time doing a lot of donations.
Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji was in deep Jog Sadhana, day and night. He did a lot of Yagnas. He would make sure that donations of diamonds and gold were given to everyone and the Langar was served. He gave pashminas, expensive clothes, diamonds and pearls. In his time away from these tasks, he would go into deep meditation. The Sadhoos that would come to Guru Sahib were very educated in the Vedas, 6 Karmas and lived a true and highly moral life. They lived in purity and abstinence. They saw everyone as the same and were content. They were without ego and spoke sweetly. They had a lot of tolerance and patience. They were practitioners of many types of Tapps and knew its conduct. They only spoke the truth and were one with the Parmatma. They lived by their Dharma. Many such Brahmans came to Guru Sahib from far away lands after hearing his glory: “the gem of the Sodhis is with patience. He gives donations, respect, Gyaan and fulfills wishes. He gives sons, bliss and says the beautiful words which shows the Parmatam.” They were Brahmans that were very moral and highly educated. They came from many lands and received many donations from Guru Sahib. Brahmans were generally poor as they spent more time in scholarly thought and didn’t have time to work to make money. Their major source of income was donations. Guru Sahib made sure that Karah Prashaad was distributed openly and freely. He made sure rich food was made in the Langar for these scholars. A lot of delicacies were made: sweets, Modhaks, ladoos, pooris and Karah Prashaad. Ghee was given to the Brahmins who did Havans. Many had their wishes fulfilled. In this way Guru ji’s praises spread. Guru Sahib had been at Tribaini for six months now, giving donations and overseeing Kirtan, Katha and Brahmans who would come to see him.
At night, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji detached himself from everything and served the Great and powerful One who can not be known. He stopped his Puranas and set them in his Dasam Duaar. His mind was still. His mind was in his full control and drenched in the great love. He would stay like this for many hours, focused in the Sri Parmeshwar. In this way, he meditated on the infinite form of the Gurudev. He was in bliss, day and night. Dusht Daman ji was his son. He was made from his own being. He sensed that Dusht Daman too, wished to come to earth now, having received the command from Akaal Purakh.
After six months of staying at the king of Teerath, the Tribaini, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji gave many donations and funded many yagnas and Langars for the wise ones. It was there that the light of Dusht Daman entered the womb of Mata Goojri ji. Mata ji was now glowing like a full moon. Any woman that would see Mata Goojri ji would be amazed and filled with love. Mata Nanaki ji was over-joyed and in bliss. She donated to the poor. The poor in turn gave well wishes in joy to Mataji for receiving the donations. Mataji was well aware that her grandson was going to be a great being, as per her husband’s prophecy. Having worshiped all of the elder Gurus, she had Karah Prashaad prepared and distributed. She knew about the glory of here powerful grandson to be. She had many celebrations take place. She would recite Gurbani all day long and recite the true name Satnam all the time. She prayed to and worshiped the Ikankaar in her mind: “you are the Ikankaar, the king of all. Fulfill my wish now. I have been waiting for many years. I will be a sacrifice unto the day my son’s son shows me his face. My son did not have any children. It has been many years since I wanted a grandson. Oh master of the 3 Loks, I know that you have now become compassionate. Now the pool of power, the great and radiant One will be born as a beautiful child. I will be fortunate on that day.” In this way, Mata ji was really happy.
Everyday a lot of Sangat would come. They came from nearby places to do the Darshan of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji. They had their wishes fulfilled. Some asked for sons and some asked for health. Some wanted bliss. Some wanted Prema Bhagti. Some wanted the gift of Simran of Satnam. Some received Brahmgyaan in their hearts. Some received the 9 Niddhis. Some Sikhs came to do the seva of the Guru’s feet. They stayed with Guru ji and did his Darshan. Some did Seva in the Langar or towed water for the Langar. Some would clean Guru ji’s clothes and shoes. Some would fan air to Guru ji. Some wiped Guru ji’s woolen shoes as he was about to walk. Some would warm water and wash Guru ji’s feet with love and devotion. Some would be happy and bring firewood. The rich Sikhs would bring expensive clothes for Guru ji and Mata Goojri ji. They would bring Cholas and Dastaars. For the mothers, Zarri cloths were brought. Some Sikhs brought the best grains and food. Some would bring sugar, salt and ghee for the Langar. Many types of sevas were done. How many Sevas can I write about? The Sikhs wanted to be blessed and so they did Seva. There was always a crowd around Satguru ji’s Dhera. The Sikhs stayed there and did Seva. They had their wishes fulfilled. The Keertan was always done. The Sikhs listened with love. Many made their life and afterlife a success. Some received Siddhis and realized they had gained many types of powers. There were so many people that it was hard to bow in front of Guru ji. Thousands of new Sangats came everyday. One group would take leave and another would come. The ones that left would praise Guru ji. Prashaad was brought all day long. Ardaas was done all the time. “Dhan, Dhan,” would be heard in every direction. There was a lot of bliss and joy. Everyone was in joy.
11-54 Prayaag to Kaanshi
After living there for many days at Prayaag, Sri Guru ji and the vaheer got ready to leave. A lot of Sangat came to meet Guru ji. The Sadhoos and Brahmins of Prayaag came to meet Guru ji. Guru ji and the Vaheer mobilized and took leave of the Sangat at Prayaag Raj. The chariots, palanquins and horses were all moving along. The Saints and Fakirs that were part of the vaheer were traveling along as well. The soldiers were on their horses. The chariots and palanquins travelled. They left Prayaag, giving hope to the Sangat. They continued their tradition of stopping every few kilometres and carried on slowly. The complete Guru travelled in this way, whose glory is pure.
The Vaheer reached the holy city of Kaanshi and set up camp, seeing a nice place. The Sikhs in that area found out that Guru Ji had arrived and came to see Guru ji, bringing many gifts. They folded their hands and did their Ardaas. Guru ji fulfilled their wishes. The head Masand of Kaanshi came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He brought all of the money collected for Guru Sahib. He did Guru ji’s Darshan and made his life into a success. The Sikhs of Kanshi bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Karah Prashaad was brought and many festivities took place in Guru Sahib’s honor. Guru ji stayed there in his Dhera for many days. Guru ji stayed there by the wish of the Sangat. The Sangat had all their wishes fulfilled. Satguru ji saw the love of the Sangat there. His praises spread throughout the city. The people met each other and praised Guru ji. It was known throughout Kaanshi about Guru Ji’s arrival. The most brilliant and scholarly Pandits came to visit Guru Sahib. Many Sanyasis, Dighambhers and tapasvis came, who wore pink, orange and yellow. They came to converse with Guru Sahib about the Brahm, the truths of the universe. Guru Sahib would answer all of their questions everyday. Whatever the Pandits asked, Guru ji answered them in a way they could easily understand. The Pandits were happy with the response. They praised Guru ji, as they received peace: “we know that you are the Guru of the world.”
Thousands of Sikhs came to attend Guru ji’s Divan. They had faith in Guru ji and received blessings. The Divan went on for many days. Guru ji was really happy to see the people. Guru ji spoke: “This is the place of Shiva; it is revered and carries a great significance. Many saints and Sikhs with pure souls live here in peace. This is the home of Gursikhi. The people from here have faith and devotion on the Guru. From the very beginning, Kaanshi was a very pure place. The Sadhoos thought of the Brahm here, all the time. Neelkanth, Shiva, made sure it was designed and utilized to his liking. The people that live here, Shiva promises them Mukti. This place assists many saints in reaching their eternal goal. The atmosphere and resources here are of such: they assist people in finding the light within. Recite the true name, Satnam, which gives peace. Make a home and live in the city of Shanker.” People found out about Guru ji coming there. Guru ji stayed there for a few days.
The Sangat of Jonpur came in large numbers. Other nearby villages joined them in coming to visit Guru Sahib as well. They heard Guru ji was in Kanshi and so they came with love. They brought a lot of gifts. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet with folded hands. They took the dust from Guru ji’s feet and put in on their faces and head with love. The Sikhs made their lives a success. They did Guru ji’s Darshan with love. A person by the name of Bhai Gurbaksh Hulasi ji came with the Jonpur sangat. He was a very devoted person who did a lot of Simran. He would think of the Satguru’s feet in his heart all the time. He sat near Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and sung Kirtan in his presence. He sang various Raags in different Taals. His voice was in tune and he was an artful singer. He sang for three hours and Guru Sahib heard his kirtan with immense love. Guru Sahib was very pleased with his love. He was happy and give him a boon: “listen Bhai Gurbaksh, I am very delighted with your Kirtan. You will not be trapped in the grasp of the jumms (messengers of the death lord). You will have a son and he will be a very good keertani. He will do Simran. Your generations will be of people who will do kirtan and Katha. The sangat will listen to their kirtan with great love and devotion.” The Sangat then grabbed Guru ji’s feet. Guru Sahib blessed them all in many ways. He then got up and put his hand on everyone’s head. The sangat was given a deep sense of peace within their hearts. Many people who came were blessed. They went back home with the feeling of complete contentment and fulfillment. They received blessings and sang Guru ji’s praises. The Sangat of Jonpur went back home. The Compassionate One stayed there for many days. After the Sangat of Jonpur left, Guru ji decided to leave as well. Guru ji and the Vaheer moved on ahead.
Guru Sahib then headed towards a place called Sahisrav (Susram), where a Sikh by the name of Chacha Phuggu ji lived. He was a very devoted Sikh, whom Guru Sahib was anxious to see. Chacha Phuggu Mal was a Gurmukh whom Guru ji loved. He had made a plea in his heart to see Guru ji come to his home, while mounted on his horse. For this reason, he had a new home made with huge front doors. Inside, he had beautiful rooms made. He made a beautiful square courtyard in the centre of the house for gatherings. The doors of the rooms were made big. He personally overlooked the design and construction of his home. During one of the days where he had Sangat at his house, the people in the Sangat were very curious to know why the front doors were very large. Although the house itself was quite big, they didn’t understand why the doors were so unproportionally large compared to the normal size of doors. They were confused about this and asked him why this was the case: “why are the door so big? You didn’t consider the proportions. The home is beautiful but the door is huge.” Chacha Phuggu ji then responded to the sangat: “I had this house made with the wish that Guru ji would come and stay here one day. He is omniscient and knows every heart. I made it for him. He will complete my wish seeing my love. I wished to see Guru Sahib come through my doors, wearing all his weapons, mounted on top of his horse. I didn’t want Guru Sahib to walk to my house. I want him to sit on the seat I have made for him as soon as he gets off his horse. I want him to enter my house on his horse. He will sit on his Singhasan. I didn’t want him to set foot on the ground outside my home. For this reason, I have made very large doors to accommodate for the horse and the great height of Guru ji as well. I will see my Guru, the greatest, in this way. He will bless me. I am waiting with love and devotion. The Saints and the Vedas say: this is the glory of the Bhagavan – the Lord fulfills the wishes of the devotees.” The Sangat heard his explanation and their doubt was cleared. Chacha Phuggu ji then continued: “knowledge, wisdom, material goods, wealth, kingdoms and status are not what impresses the Guru. People who have greatness and do strict Tapps, the Prabhoo does not even look at them by mistake. The Guru follows devotional love. He runs towards his servants. He does what is in the hearts of his servants. The Lord turned the temple for Bhagat Namdev ji as the Pandits made him sit towards the back door of the temple. The Lord made the hut of Namdev ji into a beautiful home, disguised as a carpenter. The Lord travelled with Namdev ji and showed his back to the Pandits. The temple turned towards Namdev ji. The Lord tended Dhunna’s cattle. He ate Dhunna Bhagat’s roti and lassi while doing his farming work. Savri Bheelni’s half eaten fruits were accepted by the Lord as a love token. Bidhur was considered the servant of the Lord and therefore, the Lord came to his home to bless him. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and his other incarnations; do not see status or caste and bless anyone who loves them deeply. He went to his servant’s home. He does not look at varan and caste. He sees the love and places his feet in his servant’s home. Hearing the virtues of the Guru, I had faith in my heart. I knew for sure in my heart that he will come, seeing me as his servant. He will fulfill my oath.” Hearing Chacha Phuggu ji’s words the sangat was filled with love and devotion. They had love for the Guru’s feet in their hearts. They did the Simran of the Satnam, the giver of peace and joy.
Dhan is the Guru that has such virtues. Awesome is the Lord Akaal Purakh, who sees the love, thousands of miles away. For the plea of King Shivnaab from Sangladeep, thousands of miles away, Guru ji visited Shivnaab and blessed him. Guru ji gave him a position of authority within the House of the Guru. Shivnaab’s generations follow the Sikh Panth till this day. They still think of Guru Nanak Dev ji and sing his praises. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, the long-armed powerful warrior, went to Kashmir to visit the old Sikh lady. She had prepared a chola with her own hands and had Guru ji wear it. Guru ji saw her love and went to her quickly. The Lord visited Mata Bhaagpari ji to wear her chola by travelling the treacherous mountain terrains of Kashmir. How many virtues can I sing? The Satguru does as his servants wish. Satguru ji heard Chacha Phuggu ji’s wish. The desire to see Satguru ji spread wildly amongst the sangat. The Sikhs were drenched in the Guru’s love. They began to gather gifts for Guru ji. They all began to wait for Guru ji to come. They prepared beautiful gifts for Guru ji. As the dwarf Sandalwood grows in the forest, its smell spreads in the forest and all the other nearby plants begin to smell the same; so did this wish to see the Guru spread among the Sangat. They all heard Chacha Phuggu ji’s oath and began waiting for Guru ji. Guru ji knew the wish of the Sangat and was on his way to visit them. He had departed from Kaanshi.
11-55 The Home of Chacha Phuggu in Sasram
The ocean of knowledge, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Ji, headed towards the east. He was like the ocean that filled the baron lands with life. He showed the new way of the Sikh Panth. To complete the oath of his Sikhs, Guru Sahib was on his way to Chacha Phuggu ji’s house. His Dhera left Kanshi. He was pulled by the string of love that his servants held. Guru ji was on his white horse. With his bow on his shoulder, sword on his hip and quiver full of arrows, he was off with his vaheer to fulfill the desire of his Sikhs. Mata Nanaki ji was with her daughter-in-law. They were on a chariot and a palanquin. Guru ji would sit in a palanquin sometimes. He slowly travelled.
Along the way was Mirzapur. Guru ji arrived there. The Sangat heard of Guru ji’s arrival. Many Sikhs came to meet him there, bringing many gifts. They came to meet Guru ji, running towards him. Guru ji set up camp and many Sikhs came to bow at his feet with eagerness. It was as though a person thirsty for days, finally got water. The Sikhs were longing to see the Guru. They folded their hands and bowed their heads onto Guru ji’s feet. The Sikhs helped Guru ji set up the Dhera. They did what Guru ji said. They did many types of Seva for Guru ji. The people of Mirzapur served everyone well. Guru ji was really happy with the Seva of the people of Mirzapur. The people brought food and water. The Sangat of the village did everything that was needed. The Dasvand they had collected, they brought all of it and placed it in front of Guru ji. They brought beautiful clothes and jewellery. They placed the gifts in front of Guru ji. Guru ji stayed about two days there. On the way, a lot of people would meet Guru ji. They brought many gifts for Guru ji and bowed to him. They requested Guru ji for boons and wishes. Satguru ji blessed everyone along the way. He broke the bonds of many. The whole region was singing Guru ji’s Jaikaras. The villages all praised Guru ji. Just as the clouds come in Saavan, the high and the low places all receive the rain. The high and low were blessed by Guru ji. Guru ji calmed everyone’s burning. He blessed everyone, all at once.
Next, Guru ji came to a river called Karamnasha. People of the Hindu faith did not consider this a pure place because it was said: that your good deeds would be washed away. The river was flowing. Guru ji came there and stood there. He got off his horse and bathed in that river. The river was waiting for Guru ji to purify it. The river that was considered impure, Guru ji touched it and made the river pure again. The faults of the river were washed away. Guru Sahib then said to the saints with him: “this is a very old river. There was a King named Trishunku in Satyuga. The saints brought the water of the 68 Teeraths and bathed the king to wash his sins. That water that flowed away became known as the River Karamnasha (destroying karma). It is still considered the destroyer of karma. For this reason, people believed this river to be impure. Now, this river is purified and it will wash away people’s sins. It will now be the “Kukarm-nasha.” The vaheer along with Guru Sahib all bathed in the river. These holy sites always long for the feet of saints so the sins would be destroyed.
Satguru ji and the Vaheer then travelled on ahead. Guru Sahib then went towards Sasram. (The place was named after Raja Sahisarbaahu who was killed by Parshuram ji) As Guru Sahib got closer, he rode his horse faster than the vaheer to go on ahead. He was anxious to see Bhai Phuggu ji. Guru Sahib shouted out to the vaheer: “everyone, take your time and move at your own pace. I have some tasks to do and therefore I will go on up ahead.” Guru Sahib rode even faster than before. Guru Sahib went straight to Chacha Phuggu ji’s home. He wanted to complete his oath. The door of Chacha Phuggu ji was huge. Guru ji was being pulled by the string of love. “I want Guru ji to come inside my home on top of his horse,” was the wish of Bhai Phuggu ji. His love just kept getting deeper and deeper.
Mounted on his strong horse, Guru Sahib entered the huge front door and came straight to the courtyard of the house. He had a Shamsheer around his waist with a golden hilt that had diamonds embedded into it. Guru Sahib had a massive bow on his shoulder and a quiver full of arrows. He came inside the house, riding his horse. He looked amazing standing in the courtyard. The people were looking around and said: “who is this that descended from the heavens? He seems to be the king of kings. He fears no one. He has no doubt. His face is gleaming like the lotus. His eyes are wide. His arms are long and strong. He has many weapons on him and his chola is that of kings. He came all of a sudden, without warning. He is fearless. His body is handsome and blissful. He is amazing. His form is unique. He looks like Akaal Purakh who has come to earth himself. The Jot shines from his forehead. He gives joy to everyone.” Chacha Phuggu ji then came out to the courtyard and stood in front of Guru Sahib. He was wondering if this was the true Guru or not. His heart was being pulled by love and he could feel the light of Akaal Purakh in this figure before him, mounted on a horse. Guru ji’s body looked like a blossoming lotus. It was pleasing to look at. The love got deeper in Bhai Phuggu ji’s heart. He saw the radiant person. He couldn’t figure out who this was but his radiance told him everything. The Bhagwant noticed the Sikh’s amazement and confusion and then spoke, to the surprise of Bhai Phuggu ji: “Oh Phuggu, your ask was really difficult to complete. You made a really big door for me. I had to come from so far away to fulfill your wish. Did you not think of how far I had to travel? I traveled hundreds of Kos. It took me many days. I had to leave the Dhera behind. Who knows how long it will take for them to get here. You didn’t think before you allowed your heart to love the Guru so deeply. You declared your desire within the sangat as well. I have fulfilled your wish and I entered your house, on top of my horse. I came to fulfill your oath. I completed your wish. Whatever your wish is, go ahead and do that now.” Bhai Phuggu ji heard Guru ji’s words and he was now certain that this was indeed Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji. He was over joyed and could not contain his happiness in his heart. It was as the ocean was looking at the full moon, dancing and jumping to catch the moon. His eyes were shedding tear drops that looked like tiny pearls. His cheeks got wet from his tears. He could not get enough of the view in front of him. He kept staring at Guru Sahib on top of the horse. Phuggu could not move and was as stiff as a post. He wanted to speak but his throat swelled up with emotion. His eyes did not blink. He finally sensed his body and realised that it was the Guru that he was worshipping, day and night, standing in front of him. He went inside the room and brought out the seat he had built for Guru Sahib and laid it out in the square of the house. He brought sheets and soft pillows for the seat. It was lined with silk sheets and beautiful tassels. He set up a silk canopy above. Bhai Phuggu ji then grabbed the reins of the horse and assisted Guru Sahib off the horse. He asked Guru Sahib to sit on the seat and he bowed down to Guru Sahib on the floor like a staff. He grabbed Guru ji’s feet and kissed them. He took the dust off of Guru Sahib’s shoes and put it to his forehead. He stood up and with his hands folded and said to Guru Sahib, in a fortunate way: “Sri Guru ji, you are the King of all three worlds. You are omniscient. You know every heart. You came to the home of this poor person and blessed me. You love your Bhagats like your children. Your name is “Deenabandoo,” the friend of the poor and the weak; you are the wealth for the unwealthy; you are every one’s own. You keep the honour of your servants. This is known in the world. You alone possess these qualities and there is no one else like you.” Everyone in Sasram now found it that Guru ji had arrived. They were all happy and began to bring their gifts. They came to pay their respects to Guru Sahib. Many gifts were placed in front of Guru ji. They bowed their heads to Guru ji, doing his Darshan. They folded their hands and did Ardaas. Karah Prashaad was brought and given to all. Guru ji blessed everyone. He gave them joy and peace. The people celebrated in many ways. They lit incense and did the Aarti of Guru Sahib. They brought garlands of flowers that were heavily scented and put them around Guru Sahib’s neck. They brought dry fruit, fruits and sweets for Guru Sahib. They brought grains and foods for the Langar.
Mata Nanaki ji and Mata Goojri ji also entered the house. They set up their Dhera in the house. The rest of the vaheer set up camp outside the house. Many people came to visit Guru Sahib inside the house. Many grains and vegetables were brought for the Langar and were served to everyone. They wanted to impress Guru ji with their Seva. Milk, ghee, sweets, soft rice, fruits and other foods were brought. Many types of Langar was made. They gave Guru ji the food to eat. Many Sikhs would sit near Guru Sahib every day as celebrations and langar continued. They wanted to hear the words of Guru ji which gave peace. Guru Sahib would do Katha and have discussions with scholarly people, answering their questions. The Dhera was there for many days. Guru ji completed the oath that his Sikh had made. Whatever the Sikhs brought, it was given to Guru ji. Their wishes were fulfilled. Guru ji blessed all of the Sikhs and fulfilled their wishes. For many days Guru Sahib stayed there and fulfilled the wishes of all who came. It was truly a sight to see. Guru ji wanted to go on ahead from there. Kavi Santokh Singh ji is a sacrifice unto the Satguru.
