10-6 The Koray and Maraaj Kisaans (Farmers) II

Guru Har Rai ji stayed there for a few days.  The people from the nearby villages all became Sikhs.  The Kisaans of Maraaj, Guru ji blessed them everyday as they did a lot of Seva.  The Koras didn’t respect the Maraaj Kisaans.  They would insult them in the filled court.  They would say: “these people are foreigners.  We don’t know where they came from.  They are making a living here.”  The Koras would command them and bully them.  They said what they felt like saying in insulting ways.  The Maraaj ke stayed in fragile huts.  They wanted to get some land to establish themselves.  They didn’t get any land.  They continued doing Satguru ji’s Seva with faith and devotion.  They were blessed.  Where the Koras had a well, the Maraaj ke fetched water from it.  The Maraaj ke Kisaans’ women would come to get the water from that well.  They would come in groups to get water.  They filled clay pots with water for drinking and washing.  When the women would come, the Kora boys would come to the well and bother the Maraaj ke women.  They would tease them and tell them to give them water to drink.  They would drink less and spill the rest of the water.  They would sometimes get on top of the well and push the rope back done.  They would touch the women and assault them.  They would make dirty jokes with them.  They would say dirty words to them.  They would laugh and do as they wish.  The women would get upset and come home crying.  One should never make fun of another’s poverty.  One should remember that one’s canoe is still in the water, not immuned to any storm either.  The boys were without shame.  The women had to tolerate the insults in order to get their water.  There was no other source.  The boys said many insulting words.  Without water, there is no life.  The women had to come and listen to the insults.

When Sri Guru Har Rai ji had come there, such an event had happened: a new bride had come, newlywed.  She came to fetch water at the well.  The Kora boys were standing at the well.  They would joke and insult the women everyday.  The newlywed bride came with the other Maraaj ke women.  She placed her pot on the well wall and pulled the rope to fetch the well pale.  One of the Koray boys sat into the pale, holding the rope.  He pulled the other side to put his weight down, like a bull being pulled.  The newlywed bride had a hard time.  The boy laughed and tried to touch the girl which made her upset.  She got angry and smashed the clay pot.  She left to go back to her home, swearing at the boys.  She couldn’t tolerate the insult.  She said to the other women in her clan along with the men: “where have you lost your honour?  People laugh at your women and insult them.  How can such people’s homes be prosperous?  I was insulted today at the well.  I can’t tolerate this.  I won’t go to get water from now on.  They touch us and laugh.  It’s better to die than to take these insults.  We should move from here.  There is no Dharam in living here where such shameless people live.”  She spoke harsh words in this way.  She spoke doubt-filled words to her clan.  The Maraaj ke heard this and got upset.  They couldn’t do anything because they needed water.  They all gathered and said: “where should we go?  Without land, we will have to do the same thing.  We can’t settle without land.  The Koray are corrupt.  They get together in great numbers and bully us.”  They all thought about this: “we have no other solution.  Sri Satguru Har Rai ji is here now.  Let’s go to him and ask him for a solution.  He is omnipotent and all-powerful.  He can do anything without delay.  We will go to his sanctuary and see what his wish is.  We will tell him our problem.  He will tell us where to settle.  His command is followed everywhere.”  They all gathered and went to Guru Har Rai ji.

The Maraaj ke came to Guru ji and did his Darshan.  They bowed to his lotus feet.  The Maraaj ke stood and said their plea with their hands folded: “Sri Prabhoo ji, we are worried.  Only you can take us across this ocean of worry.  We are drowning.  We don’t have land to settle.  We want to live there.  The Koray brothers are big in numbers.  They don’t give us any land.  They own the land.  Jait Pirana is their elder.  He is really strong, known to rip a lion’s jaw.  He has the whole land under him.  He guards the land.  We can’t find land where we can settle and build our homes on.  You are all-powerful, omnipotent and stronger than strong.  You are wise and filled with unlimited virtues.  Please say the words which would complete our tasks.  Why wouldn’t the task be fulfilled by your words?  See us as your own.  Help us settle.  Please give us land.”  Sri Guru Har Rai ji saw his servants and understood their problems.  They needed land to make their own village where they can live in joy.  Guru ji decided to help them.  He gave them hope: “I have understood your need.  I will get you your land.  You will settle your own village and make your own wells.  You will without fear.”  The Maraaj ke were happy hearing this.  They said with their hands folded: “you know everyone oh Omniscient One.  The Koray are corrupt.  We can’t tolerate their insults and corruption.  We come to your sanctuary.  Our women go to their well for water.  Their boys insult and laugh at our women without shame and fear.”  Satguru ji spent the whole day and then called the Koras to him.

The Koras came to Guru ji.  They bowed and sat down.  Guru ji looked at the elder Koras.  They were big and strong.  There were many in numbers.  They were filled with ego.  Sri Satguru Har Rai ji said: “the Kisaans of Maraaj can farm.  They are here due to bad times.  They are forcibly nomadic and in trouble.  They can’t settle without land.  They can’t grow because of this.  They need a home.  They came to me for help.  Listen to me and give them land worth 5 ploughs.  They can make a living out of this.  They will live in joy with this.  They will settle and make their homes.”  The Koras heard Guru ji’s words and didn’t obey.  They said: “what will land of 5 ploughs do?  What will they earn and eat?  How will they make their homes and farm?  How will they earn for their living with such little land?”  Guru ji responded: “this is enough for them.  They will earn a living with little land.  I will bless them with prosperity.  They will earn for all of their families.  They will grow a lot of food in little land.”  The Koras said: “we can’t give them any land.  We can’t give them enough land as much as the point of the plough.  We won’t give it to them.  We don’t want them to be our equals.  They will fight with us over land.  For this reason, we refuse this proposal.  We don’t want them to settle equal to us.  This is the wisdom of wise men: “giraas deho pur baas na deho- give food but not a place to live.”  They said this to Guru ji and went quiet.  Satguru ji understood that they were not going to agree to giving any land.  The Koras got up and went to their homes.  Sri Guru Har Rai ji rested then.  The Maraaj ke found out about this meeting and became worried.  They thought about their settlement.

10-7 The Koray and Maraaj Kisaans (Farmers) III

In the morning, the Maraaj ke Kisaans all got together.  They found out that the Koras did not accept Guru ji’s command.  Guru ji’s words were going to be true but they didn’t know what was the next step.  They all came to Guru ji.  They bowed and sat near Guru ji.  The Giver of Mukti blessed everyone.  The conversation with the Koras was told to them.  The Maraaj ke heard this and spoke with their hands folded in humility: “you can do anything.  You can do the impossible.  You can make the hard task easy.  You can make the easy task hard.  We have no other support but you.  If there is another solution, please tell us by which we can settle.  Without a village, we cannot be at peace.  Without a home, there is no honour.”  Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard the pleas of his Sikhs.  He saw their humility and listened to their plea.  He then said: “pack up your stuff.  Gather your people and travel from here till it is night time.  Wherever you end up when night falls, set up your new settlement there.  Make your homes and village there.  That land will be yours.  Settle there with joy.  If you face any troubles, the Satguru will help you.”  The Maraaj ke heard this and folded their hands.  They bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  They obeyed with contentment.  They knew their task was going to be successful.  The one who commands the 14 worlds, men are nothing in front of him.  They took leave from Guru ji and packed up their belongings.  They packed up their temporary homes and loaded them on to their carts.

The Maraaj ke travelled all day.  The men, women and children all travelled.  When it was night, they stopped.  They saw the land they were standing on.  It was nice and clean.  It was good to settle there.  The Maraaj ke stayed there.  Where the village “Phool Maraaj Ke” is located now, that is the exact place which was commanded by Guru Har Rai ji to settle.  The people all rested and ate their food.  In the morning, they began to make that their home.

A person by the name of Jait Pirana was the owner of the land where the Maraaj ke were.  Jait Pirana was really strong.  He could handle a lion by himself.  He heard that the Maraaj ke had come to his land.  They were going to take over his land.  From the side of the Maraaj Ke, Kala and Karam Chand were the elders.  Jait Pirana sent his messenger to Kala with the message: “you can’t stay here.  This is my land.  I am the owner of this land.  I take care of this land like my family.  Leave here without delay.  Settle your village at another place.  I will come with my men if you don’t go.  I will kill you if you fight.  I will take your things.  Get out of my area.  If you bother me, I will kill you.  I have never lost.”  In this way, the messenger came to where Kala and Karam Chand were sitting.  The messenger said to them: “why have you all stayed on this land?  You didn’t ask anyone or get permission for staying the night here.  Why are you being stubborn?  Do you not know of Jait Pirana’s strength?  There is no one stronger than him.  Hundreds run away when they see him.  Nobody can win him.”  Kala said to the messenger: “Jait has a lot of land.  We know how strong he is.  We can’t be his enemy.  We can’t compare to him.  Sri Guru Har Rai ji is the Guru of the world.  We are under his support.  He commanded us to come here.  We came here, obeying his order.  We will settle here now.  There is a lot of land.  Give us some land.  We will spend our time here.  Firstly, it’s the Guru’s command; secondly, be generous towards us.  We will live under your command.  We will live to your benefit.”

The messenger came back and told Jait Pirana: “Sri Guru Har Rai ji is really powerful.  He has the Meeree and Peeree.  He supports the Maraaj ke and told them to come here.  They want to settle a village here.”  Jait said: “why does the Guru want to take my land and give it to them?  I won’t give my land.  I won’t do this unorthodox thing.  Go and tell them this.  If they want what is good for them, they should leave now.  They should find another place to live and make their homes.  The Guru will get them their land.”

The messenger came to the Maraaj ke again and told him what Jait Pirana said.  Kala and Karam Chand got worried and said: “he is strong.  He won’t let us live here.  We can’t fight him.”  They all went to Guru ji with humility.  They folded their hands and bowed.  They sat down and said: “listen Prabhoo ji, Jait won’t let us stay.  We followed your command and settled when it was night time as we travelled.  We settled but the land belonged to Jait Pirana.  He got angry and sent a messenger to us.  He will loot us if we don’t go.  He wants us to leave now.  We said your name but he didn’t care.  He is ready to fight.”  Guru ji said: “keep hope.  Fight him!  Kill Jait in the battle.  Let go of your cowardness.  Make an effort and fight!  Settle your village there.  Fight anyone who comes!”  (Baba Phool was Kala’s nephew.  Phool’s sons were Baba Ram Singh and Baba Trilok Singh who took Amrit from Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Trilok Singh’s sons were Gurdit Singh and Sukhchain Singh who were the kings of Nabha and Jind.  Ram Singh’s son was Maharaja Ala Singh who settled Patiala.  Kala’s sons were the Chaudharys of Malva) Kala and Karam Chand said: “how can we fight?  Jait Pirana is really strong.  There is no one else like him.  He can fight an elephant.  He can kill a lion.  Everyone is afraid of him.  Nobody wants to face him in battle.  He is the strongest in the land.  He carries a sharp spear in his hand.  Whoever fights him, cannot stay alive.  He fights hard.  He doesn’t care how many come to fight him.  They all run away, leaving their honour behind.  We are nothing in front of Jait.  His glories are spread.”  When Kala praised Jait, Guru ji said: “why is he so strong?  He is really big.  Tell me why is he like that.  Why does the enemy run away from him?  You don’t face him because of fear.  You want to run away without fighting him.  How will you settle then?  Tell me everything.  I will find a solution for you.  I want to settle your village.”  Kala and Karam Chand heard this and wanted to tell Guru ji the whole story.

10-8 Jait Pirana dies

The Maraaj ke folded their hands and said: “listen Prabhoo ji, Giver of Joy; we will tell you his history of his birth.  The night his mother was pregnant, she was young; their union was a passionate one filled with joy.  She was up most of the night.  When it was the last watch of the night, the mother fell asleep.  She was sleeping on the rooftop.  The whole night had passed.  There was a lake near their home, filled with pure water.  The sun was about to come up.  A fierce lion came to drink water at the lake.  One side was the village and on the other was the lion.  The lion was thirsty and drank a lot of water.  The lion then roared out loud.  Jait Pirana’s mother woke up from the sound of the lion’s roar.  She saw the lion from the roof.  The reflection of the sun could be seen in the water.  She could also see the reflection of the lion in the water.  She saw the two lions, the first thing in the morning after she was impregnated.  She was not afraid.  She kept staring at the lion with patience.  She didn’t look anywhere else.  For this reason, her son in her womb was affected by this.  He had the picture of the brave lion from his mother’s eyes affect his personality.  He is strong and brave for this reason.  He is able to fight thousands at a time, all alone.  Nobody is brave enough to face him.  They all lose their patience.  How can we fight him, whom everyone fears?  We can’t compare to him.  He kills people and loots them.”  Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard this and spoke to Kala: “he is undoubtedly strong.  Everyone fears him.  I want you to settle though.  My words won’t go without fruit.  All of the men and warriors should get together and make an effort.  Fight Jait with your strength.  When the weapons swing on the battlefield, I will be by your side.  I will help you.  Kill Jait and fulfill your task.  Live without worry and fear.  This land belongs to warriors.  The one who fights battles, that person enjoys this land.  If one fights and dies on the battlefield, they will receive the pleasures of Heaven.  If they stay alive, they become masters of the land.  The people living on the land come under their command.  The glory of the battlefield is great.  Be aware and kill Jait.  I will be by your side.  Kill your enemy with enthusiasm.  Don’t have any fear in your mind.  Whoever comes to your face, kill them with the weapons.”  Guru ji said this over and over again.  Kala and the others became warriors by Guru ji’s motivational words.  They all folded their hands with humility and said: “Sri Guru ji, if you are our master, then we can kill our big enemy.  We have faith on your strength.  We trust you.  We are nothing in front of Jait though.  We just need your blessing.  We can achieve the highest status then.”  They all decided to fight.  They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and went back to their Dhera.

The Maraaj ke got ready with their weapons.  Jait’s messenger came to the Maraaj ke.  He said: “I am here to remove you from the land.  If you leave today, your lives will be spared along with your belongings.  Otherwise Jait will attack as your death.  He will loot all your things.  I came to give you this message.  You can either fight, or leave the land.”  Kala heard this and said: “we want to establish a village here.  We are sitting here by the order of the Guru.  Why do you harbour hate for no reason?  If Jait does not let us stay here, then we will face him with iron metal.  Guru ji is the strength of the weak.  Everyone knows this in the world.  We have faith on the strength of Guru ji.  We have the support of the Guru’s feet.  If Jait comes to fight, we will come ahead and fight with the radiance of the Guru.”  The messenger quickly went back to Jait Pirana, hearing words of rebellion.

The messenger told Jait: “they are ready to fight.  They say they have the support of their Guru.  They won’t leave the land.  They will kill or be killed.  They have sat down like the land belongs to their fathers and grandfathers.  They are being stubborn.  We will have to fight and take back the land.  Otherwise, we can forgive them and give them the land to live on.”  Jait Pirana heard this and got angry.  He said: “who can set foot on my land?  Have they not heard of my power?  If they knew, they wouldn’t face me.  Bring my clothes and weapons.  Saddle my clever horse.”  Jait and his brothers got ready.  He gathered his men and had the Dhol sounded to fight.  He spoke by the pride of his strength.  He came out of his village with his men.  He wanted to fight.  Many spears, swords, rifles, shields and other weapons were carried by the men, like lions.  They came playing the Dhols.  They spoke with pride.

Bhai Kala and Bhai Karam Chand got news of the battle.  They got ready to fight.  They held their weapons and came to the battlefield by the faith of Sri Guru Har Rai ji.  They said his name and came to the battlefield.  They had anger in their mind.  They all said of Jait’s strength: “who will fight him and bare his strikes?  When he brings his spear, normal people can’t face him.  One should lead and we will follow.  Kill Jait Pirana first.”  Everyone went quiet after saying this.  Who will go first?  Everyone lost hope.  The enemy was really strong.  They feared his spear.  They only had the faith of Sri Guru Har Rai ji.  Bhai Kala ji gathered his courage and said: “I have faith on the Guru’s words.  We will certainly win.  No need to fear anything.  We will win.  He will be with us to kill Jait Pirana.  He will take care of his promise.  I will lead and fight in the front.  I will kill Jait Pirana or die myself.  All of you brothers should help me.  I will go ahead and cut his head with my sword.”  Bhai Kala ji went ahead.  Everyone followed.   They fired rifles from afar and then came close to fight in close combat.  They saw the battle and got angry.  Jait yelled out in ego to challenge them.  He had his sharp spear in his hand.  He looked at his spear and the enemy with anger.  Just as a lion does not count or fear a thousand elephants, that is how Jait saw his enemy.  He did not fear them.  He advanced and scared his enemy.  Bhai Kala ji saw Jait Pirana come forward.  He was killing many while coming ahead.  Bhai Kala ji thought of Guru Har Rai ji: “pleas be with me.  I am going ahead to fight.”  To keep his promise, Guru ji came to protect Bhai Kala.  Jait and Bhai Kala fought each other.  It was a fierce battle.  When Jait lifted his spear high, he got ready to hit Bhai Kala; Guru ji sent his 4 Birs to help.  Two Birs held Jai Pirana’s feet and 2 Birs held his arms.  They stopped Jait’s strength.  Jait still pushed hard to strike his spear.  Guru ji put his iron anvil in front to take the brunt of the spear.  Jait thrusted his spear at Bhai Kala’s face.  He couldn’t be stopped by the Birs.  The spear pierced the anvil and the point hit Guru ji’s hand in his palm.  The spear got stuck there by Guru ji’s palm.  It was stopped but Bhai Kala ji has hit in the mouth.  His two teeth broke by the impact.  Kala saw that the strike as a miss.  He had heard of his strength but said: “people say he is really strong.  He has no strength!”  He didn’t know Guru ji stopped him with his power.  He thought: “the spear did nothing.  He used his whole strength.  I will strike now.”  Bhai Kala ji thought of this and swung his Tegh with all his might.  It was the Janyow cut.  Jait Pirana was sliced in two, from shoulder to the opposite waist.  He fell like the wind uproots an old tree.  His blood coloured the land red.  Jait Pirana fell and looked like he was sleeping, with his legs spread wide.  His brothers saw him and stopped fighting.  They understood that their Guru was helping them.  Bhai Kala ji and the others were in bliss.  They came back to their Dhera and gathered.

10-9 The Maraaj ke Settle

Bhai Kala and the rest of the Maraaj ke were really happy.  They all went to go see Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib ji.  As they came to see Guru ji, they folded their hands from afar.  When they came close to Guru ji they placed their heads on Guru ji’s feet and said: “Dhan Gareeb Nivaaj!  You always keep your promise to your servants.  You kill your servants’ enemies.  We will settle in peace and joy now.  The great and powerful enemy was killed on the battlefield.”  Satguru ji asked: “tell me Kala, how did the battle go?  How did you fight?  How did you get your strength?  How did you kill the enemy?”  Bhai Kala ji said: “listen Prabhoo, as we had been hearing that he was so strong; he wasn’t strong at all in the battle.  Who we thought was really strong, was actually seen as very weak.  He struck with all his might once but it didn’t cause any damage.  He came in front and I felt a blow.  It broke my teeth, which fell.  The tip of his spear didn’t come ahead.  His spear seemed to have stopped in mid-air and didn’t go ahead from that point.  I didn’t find him strong at all.  I saw an opportunity and swung my sword to kill him right away.”  Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard this and smiled.  Guru ji told Bhai Kala why Jait Pirana was killed: “don’t see him as weak.  Recognize him as a very powerful warrior.  When you were fighting on the battlefield, I came to help you.  I sent 2 Birs which hung on to Jait Pirana’s legs.  Two Birs I sent to hold his arms.  He still couldn’t be stopped by the Birs.  Look how strong he was.  He struck his spear and then I stopped it with an iron anvil.  I quickly stopped the strike with the anvil.  He broke the anvil and hit my palm.  Look at my palm, the wound from the tip of his spear.  I held his spear with my hand.  That’s why you thought it stopped in mid-air.  You felt the blow on your teeth, breaking them.  From this, understand how strong Jait Pirana really was.  Jait didn’t see you as anything.  There was nobody strong enough to face him.  He could have killed anyone with punches and kicks.  Only I could stop him.”  The Maraaj ke all heard this and folded their hands.  They all bowed and said: “you are great Guru ji!  Your greatness is great.  You assisted your Sikhs and killed the enemy.  This is not a new thing for you.  You protect your servants anywhere in the world.”  They were all happy to meet and speak with Satguru ji.  They all bowed and came to their Dhera.

The Maraaj ke established their village.  They all served Guru ji as long as he was there.  After some time, they wanted to marry their children off.  The people from the nearby villages saw them as poor foreigners.  They said: “we don’t know who they are and where they are from.”  People didn’t want to become their relatives.  The Maraaj ke came to Guru ji and said: “nobody wishes to meet with us.  We are Ghristis but we can’t marry our children off.  If this continues, we won’t grow.  Our children are old enough for marriage.  How can we see our children getting old and not getting married?  We are worried.  Please help us.  We come to your sanctuary.”  Guru ji became compassionate and said: “this task will be fulfilled as well.”

Other people came to see Guru ji and became Sikhs.  Guru ji said to those Sikhs: “give and take marriage relationships with the Maraaj ke.  Their family is really good.  Don’t doubt their lineages.  They are the Sikhs of the Guru.”  The Sikhs obeyed.  They all saw their family as a good one.  They married their children with the Maraaj ke children.  They had many relations from people from far off lands.  Sons and daughters were married.  They all lived together.  They got what they needed from Guru ji.  The Maraaj ke were now settled.  Listen to the Katha of how they were blessed.

Baba Lohiya (Baba Phool) and Baba Sandhli were young children.  They were the nephews of Bhai Kala ji.  Phool’s and Sandhli’s parents had died when they were kids.  Their father died in the battle with Jait Pirana.  The two boys had become orphans.  Bhai Kala ji was raising them.  Bhai Kala ji raised them with love.  He saw them as his own sons.  One day, he took both his nephews with him to see Guru ji.  One he picked up and the other, he held his finger.  They came to the Giver of Joy.  Where Guru Har Rai ji’s Divaan was, they all came.  He told his nephews to bow to Guru ji in the court.  They came and bowed to Guru ji.  They then patted their stomachs.  Guru ji saw this and said to Bhai Kala ji: “what are these two kids doing?  Why are they patting their bellies?”  Bhai Kala ji folded his hands and said: “they are orphans.  I am raising them.  With your blessing, I raise them.  They come to your shelter.  They are patting their bellies to tell you that they are hungry.  They don’t know how to speak.  You are the Gareeb Nivaaj.  These kids are orphans and poor.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “they will be greater than great.  The one you hold in your lap (Baba Phool), his family will be really big.  They will be kings with great armies.  They will have all the wealth.  Their horses will drink the water of the Jumana.  They will ride horses and show their strength.  They will rule for many generations.  They will serve the Guru.  The child that stands on the ground, (Baba Sandhli) his generations will stand in the world.  They will rule and will be called Chaudharys.”  Both kids were blessed.  Bhai Kala ji was happy.  He bowed and went home.

When Bhai Kala ji went home, he told his wife: “Sri Satguru Har Rai ji was very gracious.  He blessed the two nephews.  They will be kings whose horses will drink from the Jumana.  They got Kingdoms and will be Chaudharys.”  His wife got angry and said: “you are happy to hear that they will be kings, but the kids born from my womb will be their subjects and pay them taxes by farming the lands.  They will be ruled by your nephews.  Without understanding this, you got them blessed.  What are you so happy about?”  Bhai Kala ji said to his wife: “this was their destiny which Guru ji blessed for them.  I didn’t plan on this.  Guru ji spoke casually when he saw them.  Tell me what else I could have done?  How can your kids be kings?  I can take our kids to Guru ji.  Guru ji will bless them when he is happy.”  The wife said: “take my kids the same way.  Make them do what they did.  Get them blessed as well.”

Bhai Kala ji took his kids to Guru ji’s place.  He and his kids bowed.  He told them to bow and pat their bellies.  The kids did as they were told.  Sri Guru ji saw this and smiled.  He understood what was going on.  He said: “who are these kids now?  What are they doing?”  Bhai Kala ji said: “these are my kids.  Their mother heard how my nephews will be kings.  She got worried that my kids will be their subjects and be in pain.  They will have to obey the command of the relatives.  They will punish my kids and arrest them.  They will give them pain.  I brought them to you now after thinking about all this.”  Guru ji then spoke: “they have already been blessed with kingdoms.  Your kids will farm their own land.  They will eat their own and won’t need to pay taxes.  If someone bothers them, those people will feel the pain.”

Bhai Kala ji heard this and came back home.   He told his wife everything and said: “in this way Satguru ji blessed them.  It is better than before.”  In this way Guru Har Rai ji blessed his servants.  He made them into kings.  The Maraaj ke served Guru ji with their minds and bodies.  They obeyed Guru ji.  The Rajas of Patiala came from Baba Phool ji.  The other brother had the kingdoms of Nabha.  They were also called Chaudharys.  The children of Baba Kala ji live in this land.  They farm their own land and eat what they sow.  They don’t pay any taxes.  Satguru ji’s blessings are indestructible.  Those people are still kings with a lot of wealth.  Both homes are still radiant.  Their lands are huge which they command.

Satguru ji stayed for some time in Jungle Desh.  He enjoyed his time there.  He blessed his own servants.  His servants are in bliss in both worlds.

10-10 Gora Born/ The State of Bhagtoo’s New Bride/ Jassa

Listen to the Katha of Guru Har Rai ji in the Jungle Desh.  Bhai Bhagtoo ji had two sons.  One of them was really strong.  When the elder son came into his mother’s womb, he spent 9 months but did not take birth during labour.  His mother was in pain.  Efforts were made to relieve the pain but they had no effect.  The Sikhs got together and came to Bhai Bhagtoo ji, where he was sitting.  They said: “you are very powerful.  Why don’t you see the pain in your own home?  The hundreds of your Sikhs plead with you for their wishes.  They wish to be saved from pain.”  Bhai Bhagtoo ji heard this and told them the facts: “my son is powerful.  He is holding himself on purpose and giving his mother pain.  He wishes to have the kingdom of the two worlds.  He wishes for bliss.  He is being stubborn.  I have offered him the kingdom of either on earth or in heaven.  He can rule the kingdom of earth.  He will enjoy it.  I tried to convince him but he isn’t listening.  For this reason, he won’t come out of his mother’s womb.”  The Sikhs heard this and were amazed.  They then said to relieve the woman’s pain: “the boy is stubborn but your wife is in pain.  Think about relieving her pain.  Cast your divine sight on your wife, not your son.  She has been in pain for 3 days now.  She is yelling in pain.  The neighbours can’t tolerate her pain.  If the son is not born, she will die.  All of us Sikhs plead you to help her.  Please be compassionate and help your own home.  Till the baby is not born, we will stay sitting at your feet.  If your son can be stubborn, so can we.”  Bhai Bhagtoo ji heard this and said: “if all of you have made this decision, then I will give him the kingdom of both worlds.  He can be born now.”  As soon as Bhai Bhagtoo ji said this, the son was born.

The son was named “Gora,” because he was fair.  The second son that was born, his name was Bhai Jeevan.  Both were very powerful.  Bhai Gora ji established a kingdom in the area of Bathinda.  He had a great army that was radiant.  Bhai Gora ji’s glory was great.

Bhai Gora ji came to see Guru Har Rai ji while he was there.  He came to where the Divaan was going on.  Bhai Gora ji heard of his father’s passing and that he had married a young girl by his word.  The daughter of the Kisaan became shy and went home to tell her parents what had happened: “an elderly man was walking on the path and married me.  My mind has been calm and still ever since.  Don’t marry me off to anyone else.  Send me to where that man is now.”  Her father understood what happened.  He began to search for who the elderly man was.  He said: “who was it that passed and married my daughter?”  There was another person standing in the fields who had seen the event and said: “it was Bhai Bhagtoo ji who passed by.  I saw him marry your daughter by his words.  He is really powerful.  He is a Brahmgyaani saint who has many Sikhs.”  The Kisaan and his family waited for many months but Bhai Bhagtoo ji did not come back.  The daughter did not want to get married to anyone else.  She stayed determined.  The family then got the news that Bhai Bhagtoo ji had left his body.  The young girl put on the clothes of a widow woman.  The family and relatives tried to convince her to get married but the young girl was steadfast in her Dharma.  The father went to where Bhai Gora ji was with his army.  He told Bhai Gora ji about his daughter’s state: “she is your mother now.  Go and bring her to your home.  Marry her with one of your father’s clothes.  Take her to your home.”  Bhai Gora ji heard this and understood what happened.  He took his father’s cane and set off with a few of his men.  He met the young girl and had her do Pheray with his father’s cane.  He brought the young girl to his home in a Dholi.  He kept the young girl as his mother.

Bhai Gora ji came to see Guru Har Rai ji, bringing some of the Brars with him.  Bhai Gora ji got off his horse and went inside the Divaan Hall.  He brought money and gifts.  He placed the gifts in front of Guru ji and bowed.  He gifted a beautiful horse to Guru ji.  He sat down after bowing to Guru ji’s feet.  Bhai Gora ji and his men all sat down in the court.  Satguru ji asked Bhai Gora ji how he was.  Bhai Gora ji said: “everything is well with your blessings.”

There was another Sikh there, named Bhai Jassa ji, who was waiving the Chaur over Guru ji’s head.  He was very handsome and young.  He was like the Avatar of Kamadeva.  By Guru ji’s blessing, he was able to do many Sevas of Guru ji.  Guru ji kept him by his side, in his presence.  Bhai Jassa ji laughed and said: “Bhai Bhagtoo ji has gone to Heaven now and left a young wife behind.  I have heard that she is pretty like a jasmine flower.  Give the girl to me.  I will keep her as my wife and have handsome sons with her.  Just as Bhai Bhagtoo ji was Satguru ji’s Sikh, see me in the same way.  By this relation, he is my brother so there is nothing wrong with this.  Otherwise, she will sit in her home without any fruit.  She is of no use to you.”  Bhai Gora ji heard this and got really angry.  His eyes and face turned red in anger.  His lips quivered but he couldn’t do anything.  He wanted to punish the man.  He wanted to cut his head off with his sword.  He controlled his anger, as he was afraid of Satguru ji.  He didn’t say anything.  He sat there for some time and then bowed to Guru ji and left.  His men came with him.

The words of Bhai Jassa ji were like arrows in Bhai Gora ji’s heart.  He was in pain with those words.  There was no wound, but the pain was deep.  The anger got worse.  He wanted to see Bhai Jassa away from Guru ji.  A wound from the weapon can still heal.  The wounds from words don’t heal.  He had to sit with respect in the court but he was upset.  He was a great warrior who wielded many weapons.  He couldn’t tolerate this insult.  The words went through his ear and pierced his heart, like the tip of an arrow getting stuck in the heart.  He came back to his Dhera.  He gathered his servants and said to them: “you are my companions who are with me.  Listen Sikhs, you were in the court with me.  You heard the insults.  Who can tolerate such words?  I am a warrior.  I can’t tolerate this.  I wanted to cut him with my sword.  I wanted to slice him in two and throw him to the floor.  He would have received his punishment right away but I was in the court then.  I do not fear death but I am burning from those insulting words.  I tolerated the insult and avoided taking my sword out.  I didn’t want to kill him in front of Guru ji.  I was afraid of Guru ji’s words.  He can curse my whole family.  I avoided the situation after thinking about it.  I want to kill him now though.  Till Jassa is alive, I won’t be in peace.  I will use wisdom and strength to kill Jassa.  I will be rewarded for keeping weapons.  Otherwise my food and clothes are cursed.”  The soldiers heard Bhai Gora ji’s words.  The Brars were afraid of Guru ji as well.  They said: “how will we kill him?  Prabhoo ji blesses him a lot.  He does his Chaur and stays with him all the time.  If he is away from Guru ji at any time, we can kill him when he is alone.  We can shoot him.  This will be easy then.  The aftermath may be difficult though.  When Guru ji hears that we had killed him, he will curse us and destroy us all.  He can pull our roots with one word.  He can kill our whole families.  His words are like the Brahmastar. They are like Ram Chander ji’s arrows; the Trishool of Shivji; the Chakar of Vishnu; the staff of the Jumms; the Bajjar of Inder.  His words are permanent.  Nobody can disobey his words in the 3 Loks.  They won’t delay to fulfill his words.  How will our roots remain in this world?  If he gets angry, he will curse us?”  Bhai Gora ji saw the fear in the hearts of his Sikhs.  To give them hope, he said: “your roots will remain in the world permanently like my family’s.  Your roots are intertwined with my roots.  My roots are intertwined with the Guru Master’s roots.  See them as permanent.  They are like the Meru Mountain.  We will make Satguru ji happy.  We will be humble and serve him.  We will plead with him.  To kill Jassa is my work.  Go and rest in your homes.”  In this way, he spoke to his men.  They made a bad plan.  There were afraid of Guru ji but their chests burnt in anger.
