10-41 Ram Rai Jealous after hearing Guru ji’s Praise
The Sangat of Delhi came with many gifts. They did the Darshan of Guru ji and had their wishes fulfilled. The ones that were sick with fever, cough or other illnesses; they heard Guru ji’s praise and came to him for his blessings. They had faith in the Guru as they came. The ones that met Guru ji with faith, their illnesses were all gone. When the pains of the Sikhs were gone, others that came, hearing the praises, they were inspired to came because of the cured. Many people with pain and illnesses came to meet Guru ji. They came to Guru ji’s sanctuary hearing his praise. Till they didn’t see Guru ji, they would stay standing at the door. The illness would bother them. When they would see Guri ji’s handsome face, they would be cured. They were in joy. Guru ji’s praise spread throughout every home, like the Malti flower blooming. People heard and came to Guru ji. There was always a crowd in Guru ji’s court. Their illnesses were cured after seeing Guru ji. It was like darkness going away by the sun shining. It was a success to have Guru ji’s Darshan. This praise spread throughout Delhi.
One day, the warriors were in the Guru’s court. They had their weapons with them, wearing great clothes. The senior Masands, who were rich, sat near Guru ji, wearing expensive clothes. The Mevras stood to do the Ardaas of the Sikhs. The Sikhs stood with folded hands. Some asked for the Simran of Satnam. Some asked for joy, sons, money or home. Some asked in their hearts and didn’t say it out loud. Some said their wishes out loud. Satguru ji was in every heart. He knew every heart. He fulfilled everyone’s wishes. Many types of illnesses were cured by the roots. The city was without illnesses. The pains did not stay where Guru ji was. Wherever people met each other, they praised Guru ji: “he is the complete Parmeshwar. He took our pains away. His elder brother has powers as well but he only shows them to the Shah. The Guru is the saviour of the weak. He is the great donor. He is benevolent. His Darshan makes the pain go away.” In this way, Guru ji’s praises spread. Everyone knew his praises. They saw the difference between the brothers. One only showed his powers to the Shah, the other helped the poor. Guru ji proved to be the supreme.
One day, the Shah thought about Guru ji. He spoke in his court as he had heard of Guru ji’s praises: “the illnesses have been cured in the city. He is deep, patient and the ocean of joy. He is young but greater than the wisest seniors. Everyone praises him. Rich and poor are the same to him.” During this time, the elder brother of Guru ji came. Baba Ram Rai ji came. He heard his brother’s praises and became worried. Like a depressed woman looking towards the moon, becoming upset, missing her husband; that is how Baba Ram Rai was. Baba Ram Rai sat in the court. He would sit where he usually did. He heard his brother’s praise and became jealous. He began to burn inside. He thought to himself: “his praise is getting bigger than mine’s. If the Shah hears this everyday from everyone, he won’t think of me as great anymore. I didn’t want my brother coming but he came. He is not satisfied with the Gurta Ghaddi. He wants to get close to the Badshah. He wants greatness and money from him. He may become equal or greater than me if he shows his powers. I am still praised in the city. I was growing. I made a mistake in calling him. He came to stop my praises. He is casting his greatness on everyone. He is getting more famous. I can’t tolerate this. I will give him a curse to finish his body. I have no other way. I wanted to do bad for him but he is getting more famous. I called him to ruin him but he is being praised. The Shah’s people praise the Guru in front of the Shah. The others are doing this too. My brother will be liked more than me. I will lose my status and praise. The Sikh Sangat has changed. They all see each other and go to my brother. They all follow each other. It’s not good for him to stay here. I will be in more pain with this.” He kept thinking of all this. Since Guru ji, the destroyer of pain, came, the Shah had heard a lot of his praises. Baba Ram Rai was really angry. His heart was burning. He said to the whole court: “whom you are praising, he is really young. He is a child. I see problems in his life. One can get Seetala and die. It’s hard to survive from this. My brother won’t survive. He won’t grow up. He will die from Seetala. He will be eaten by Seetala. So what if he came to Delhi? He will get small pox. Then I will see how he will survive. His time is very near. He never had Seetala before. Now when it comes, he will die. If he survives, he may live but if he doesn’t cure Seetala, he won’t grow up.”
Nauranga and the whole court heard this. They were shocked to hear this. They all saw the jealousy in Baba Ram Rai’s heart. He cursed his own brother. Nauranga thought to himself: “the Guru doesn’t want to meet me. He is fearless. He has no pain. He has no wish to be praised. He is young and very forgiving. His elder brother is shallow. He cursed his own brother. That was not wise. That was mean. I see his conflict. The Guru is deep and detached from the world.” The Shah and the people of the court thought about this. Nauranga said: “why are you angry at your brother? He is in Delhi and you are upset at him. He didn’t want to meet me. You wanted him to come here. Why are you upset now? You should be calm and cool. Go and meet your brother. Don’t speak bad about him. Both your words became true. Whatever you say: painful or joyful, it becomes reality. Why are you cursing your brother? You spoke out of anger. If your brother says something, you will regret it. You will be in trouble if he curses you. Forgive each other and be in joy. The Sikhs and servants will follow you. You are praised by the Hindus. They give you money with devotion.” Baba Ram Rai heard this and said: “my father’s wealth is with my brother: 2,200 horses and warriors, land, wealth, buildings, chariots, palanquins, elephants, camels, uncountable items. My brother took it all. I was kicked out. The Delhi Sangat serves me. Now my brother became their Guru. What else I can say? I don’t want my father’s wealth, even though it’s rightfully mine. My brother has it all.” The Badshah and the officers said: “you are older. You should forgive your brother. Your jealousy is not nice.” This was talked about in the court. Everyone went to their homes.
This spread in Delhi. There were two types of Sikhs. Some saw Guru ji as the supreme. Some saw Baba Ram Rai as the Guru. Some said: “Guru Har Krishan ji is the supreme. He sits on the Gurta Ghaddi. He is forgiving. He has greater powers.” Some said: “Ram Rai is the elder son. He showed his powers.” The Sikhs talked and debated with each other. They saw the greatness and the shallowness. Sri Guru Har Krishan ji was the supreme. He came out on everyone’s praises. He was out like the sun, shining brightly. The slanderers were like owls, pained from the sun’s light. The Sikhs bloomed like the lotus. The Sikhs saw the greatness of the true Guru. There was always a crowd at Guru ji’s door. The cured brought many gifts. They bowed and praised Guru ji. They did Simran and did the Darshan of Guru ji. They were in bliss, seeing him.
10-42 Guru ji Makes a Prediction about Ram Rai
The next morning, Guru ji bathed and got ready. Satguru ji sat in his Samadhi. Meeting him was the treasure of joy. Bhai Gurbaksh ji, the Masand, and the servant Sikhs of Delhi came to meet Guru ji. They folded their hands and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They were in deep joy, meeting Satguru ji. They came with faith and devotion. Guru ji was in the form of a child. He was beautiful. He wore golden jewellery. His eyes were filled with compassion and wisdom. His words were like flowers. His teeth were like diamonds. Whoever he looked towards; their pain was gone. He showered Amrit on top of them. The people would say: “Dhan Guru! He is the giver of joy. He gives joy and relieves our pain. He thinks of all.” Bhai Gurbaksh ji, the leader Masand, came and folded his hands. He said: “something has spread in the city. People get together and say that in the Shah’s court, you were discussed. Your elder brother was in the court. He spoke quite a bit about you. He listened to your praises. The Raja of Jaipur was also there. He heard everything. We should ask him what really happened. He will tell us, as it happened. We can’t rely on what is heard.” Satguru ji, the Patient One, heard this and spoke: “what is the will of the Parmeshwar, that is exactly what will happen. It is definite. Nobody’s wisdom will work against it. Many wise people have applied their wisdom and lost. Whatever the Prabhoo does, you will have to accept it. Whatever is the will of the Prabhoo, that is what will happen, automatically. The Bhagats see this and become happy. The Bemukhs (atheists) blame Hari for the bad things. They see themselves as wiser in their hearts. The one who wishes to make their afterlife a success, they should accept the will of Prabhoo and be happy with it. They should do the Simran of Satnam, all the time. They discard the notion that they are the body. They discard their “hamta.” This drama is only a few days long. The person reaches the door of Hari Prabhoo who does this Simran. They keep the good thing. They don’t attach themselves to this mythical world. They don’t lose. The Satguru stays by that Sikh. In this way, the Sikh crosses the world ocean.” About an hour and a half passed in this discussion. Guru ji gave this wisdom to the Sangat. He gave the wisdom of the true Self and the fact that the world is an illusion.
During this time, Raja Jai Singh Svaee had arrived to Guru Har Krishan Sahib ji’s court. He came and bowed his head. He sat near Guru ji. Everyone saw the great king. Bhai Gurbaksh ji folded his hands and said to the king: “oh master of the land, tell us about the discussions in the Shah’s court. Tell us what you saw and heard. What was discussed about Satguru ji there? What happened when the Guru’s elder son was in the court? This news is discussed in every home in the city. Some are saying one thing, some are saying another. We want to hear it from you since you were there. We will believe you. You heard everything. Tell us everything. Say it in front of Satguru ji.” The king heard this and took a deep breath. He shook his head and lowered his eyes. He said: “what can I say? I can’t say. Your brother is really jealous of you. I was sitting beside the Shah along with many other kings and Umraavs. The whole court was praising you, Satguru ji. They were praising your personality. Your brother, Baba Ram Rai ji came. He heard your praises and was surprised. He already wanted to make you look smaller. He couldn’t tolerate your praises. He is the one that wanted you to come to Delhi. He was the one who kept insisting on bringing you here. As soon as you came, he spewed his hatred and anger. He said bad words in the court. He said that his younger brother is a young child who will be eaten away by Seetala. He said: “how will he continue with the Gurta Ghaddi? He will die soon.” He said this in front of everyone. He was in pain. He couldn’t tolerate your praises.” Sri Guru Har Krishan ji was patient. He was unaffected by anything. The Sangat insisted on Guru ji either reversing the curse or saying something in response. Guru ji said: “if I don’t say anything, then people will say that the Gurta Ghaddi is nothing. For this reason alone, I will say something as well. I won’t return my brother’s words because whatever comes from his mouth is my father’s blessing. I won’t disrespect my father’s blessing. I will let my brother’s curse follow through. I was not ever going to meet the Badshah. Why was my brother jealous of me? I wasn’t going to take his status from him, nor was I going to take the Badshah’s wealth. Till my brother is alive, he will burn from his mind and body. He will want to have a big family that is worshiped in the world and became the Gurus. He can marry as many times as he wishes but will not have a single child (Baba Ram Rai ji had 4 wives: Mata Malooki Dev ji, Mata Punjab Kaur ji, Mata Raj Kaur ji and Mata Lal Kaur ji). He will not see his son’s face. He will remain without children. He will be depressed his whole life. The joy and wealth he wishes for, he will not get. He will be burnt alive. He won’t understand how he died. He talks of other’s death but won’t know of his own. He will burn alive and die without children. He will have to endure these 3 curses. They will not reverse, no matter how much he tries to stop them. Life and death are the same for me. This body is destined to die one day. Whoever is born must die one day. That is for sure. Only the fool wishes to remain alive. I was going to forgive his curse but then the Sikhs would lose their faith in the Guru. The Sikhs would have thought: “the Guru is not capable here. How will the Guru save us in the afterlife?” Thinking about his, I listened to the Sangat and said those words. My brother’s personality is harsh. I know him. I gave him his reward to what his Karma brought upon him. I didn’t curse him for me. I cursed him for these two reasons.” Jai Singh Svaee, Masand Gurbaksh and the other Sikhs all heard this and praised Guru ji: “you are deep. Prabhoo ji, you are patient. Your power is clearly seen. You are truly the rightful person to sit on the Ghaddi of Guru Nanak Dev ji. You deserved it! You are the good son of Sri Guru Har Rai ji. Your wisdom is pure. Who can compare themselves to you? How can the stars and moon compare to the sun?” In this way, everyone praised Guru ji. Raja Jai Singh bowed and took leave from Satguru ji.
Raja Jai Singh went back to the Shah’s court. He went to the Badshah and bowed his head with respect. Where the other Umraavs were sitting, Jai Singh sat with them. When the discussion of Sri Guru ji started, Raja Jai Singh praised Satguru ji in a noble way. He said many Kathas of the Guru in many ways. The Badshah of Delhi heard it all.
Bhai Gurbaksh ji and the other Sikhs were at Guru ji’s Dhera. They were all shocked at the curses from both sides. They were trembling with fear. They knew that the words of both brothers were going to become reality. They feared that this may ruin the Gurta Ghaddi. The one that gives joy to the Sikhs and the Masands, they didn’t want anything bad to happen to him. They all bowed and left. Nobody knew what was going to happen. The brothers were in a conflict. Sri Guru Har Krishan ji was the complete Satguru. He was with great qualities. When everyone left, Satguru ji sat in a Samadhi. Kavi Santokh Singh ji bows to the feet of Satguru Har Krishan Sahib ji.
10-43 The Shahzada Comes with Gifts
In the Shah’s court, the praise of Sri Guru Har Krishan ji was heard. It was radiant. The Shah heard: “Guru ji has unlimited powers. His Darshan makes the pain go away.” The Shah had love in his heart. He said: “listen Jai Singh Svaee; how can I meet him? Does he happily want to see me or not? I have heard that he is beautiful like the moon. He is a child but deep and patient. I want to meet him once. Ask him one more time. I want him to agree on his well terms.” Jai Singh folded his hands and said: “send someone to Satguru ji from your side. I will go with them and ask Guru ji. I will tell you what his wish is. If he agrees, he will come. Otherwise, you can go see him. He does what he pleases. He is very intelligent in speaking and he is with deep wisdom. Lakhs of Sangat come to see him. They come from many miles around. They come and talk about their problems. They do his Simran and the pain goes away. They say that the Guru came to them in their land and helped them. Guru ji saved many Sikhs. Some say: “Guru ji blessed me with a son. He was happy with me and gave me a son.” Many Sikhs come to do Ardaas. The Guru is complete and omniscient. His praise has spread to far off lands. I have heard and seen the miracles. You wanted me to call him here, so I did. I sent a minister with love. I sent a lot of gifts to him. I had my minister do a humble request. The minister went to his home. My minister made efforts to convince him. He came to Delhi with many requests. You will need to send your minister.” The Shah said: “who should I send? I will send many gifts as well.”
During this conversation, the Shahzada came into the court. Aurangzeb was happy to see his son. He took his son into his lap and spoke with love: “you should go to the Guru. You are a child and so is he. He is the Guru of the Hindus. He is the same age as you. Take a big plate with many precious gems. In another plate, take golden coins. Offer them and ask for your wellness. Speak with love. Make sure you set a meeting with myself and him. If he doesn’t agree, then ask him to write a Shabad. Show me his written words. I will read the words.” The Shahzada got ready to go.
The Shahzada took many expensive gifts of clothes, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Many Umraavs went with the Shahzada. They wore royal clothes and jewellery. Raja Jai Singh Svaee went as well. The Naqeebs lead them, playing many instruments. Rich and wise people; scholars of language, they all went with the Shahzada. The people of Delhi were happy to see the Shahzada travel by. He was making everyone happy. Sri Guru Har Krishan ji got news: “the Shahzada is coming with gifts.” Guru ji had a tent set up. Many rugs and tarps were laid out. Clothes and weapons were worn by the warriors. The warriors all came and sat into the court. The Masands and the Mevras came. The Sikhs waived Chaurs over Guru ji’s head. The Chobdhaars held golden and silver maces. Everyone was in attention. It was like the army of lions waiting for the army of elephants. The Rababis sang Shabads in Raag. The Raags made the love arise in the heart. The Shahzada arrived during this time. He bowed at the door. The plates of gems and golden coins were brought with him. He placed the plates filled of shiny gems in front of Guru ji. The Mevra received the plates and did the Ardaas for the Shahzada out loud: “Guru Gareeb Nivaaj; the Shahzada of Hindustan has come to your court for your Darshan, bringing many gifts. Please accept his offerings.” The Umraavs all came in with respect. They all placed their offerings. The Shahzada and the Umraavs all sat down after bowing their heads. The king of Jaipur was at the front to speak. He spoke on behalf of the Shah: “the Shah bows to you. He wishes to see you. He has a deep wish to see you. He wants your Darshan. That is a big thing. He has sent the Shahzada for this reason. He brings this request: “please see my father.” The Umraavs said: “the Raja of Jaipur has been instructed to request you to come. The Shah wishes to give joy to his father. The Shah has been waiting for you. You are the man of Khuddah, following the righteous path. We wish to meet you. The Badshah is strict on the Shariya. He reads Nimaaz everyday. He does Simran with the Mala. We can’t praise the Badshah enough. He can distinguish truth from lies. He does not like hypocrisy. He destroys it. He finds you as the greatest. He bows to you.” Raja Jai Singh spoke: “the Shah loves you a lot. He had a deep desire to meet you and listen to your words. If you are happy and wish to see him; the Badshah would be really happy. If you don’t wish to see him, to follow your vow, then please say a Shabad from your mouth. Please write it in Farsi so that the Badshah may be able to read it. The Shah would be happy with this. He will see it as the same as meeting you. He has commanded me with this. He wishes for you to meet him with joy. Only if you wish to. You can do as you wish.” Hearing Jai Singh, the Umraavs and the Shahzada said: “what Jai Singh says is true.” Sri Satguru ji said: “the reason for not seeing him, I have already told him. Listen, what has been said, there is no use of saying it again. If I don’t see him, what loss is it for him? What will happen if I do meet him? My father has thought about this. He told me not to meet the Badshah. He stopped me from meeting him. My father’s words are in my heart. I can’t disobey him in any way or at any time. The Shah is wise. His knows the ways of saints. He knows that my father didn’t want to see him. I will write a Shabad of Gurbani. He can read it and ponder on it. Keep it in your heart. Walk on its path and be in joy. Your birth and death will be erased if you earn it.” After saying this, Guru ji uttered a Shabad from Gurbani. The Navisindh got ready to write. It was a Shabad by Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. It was written in Farsi for the Badshah to read:
Sri Mukhvaak
What use is it to eat or wear (lavish) things if the True Lord does not dwell in the heart?
What use are dry fruits, ghee, gurrh, sweets, white flour and meat?
What use are expensive clothes, expensive beds on which pleasures are experienced?
What use is the army, guards, servants and living in palaces?
Nanak, without the True Name, everything is destined to be destroyed..2..
(SGGS 142)
Sri Guru ji had this written. Without the Satnam, everything is a myth. Everyone listened with silence. Everyone praised Guru ji after hearing his sweet words. The Shahzada was given a Siropa. Sweet Prashaad was given to everyone. They were given leave with respect. They all left with joy.
The all went to where the Shah was sitting and told him what happened. The Shahzada gave the Badshah the Shabad written for him. Nauranga read the Shabad and was happy. He read it with eagerness. The glory of the Satnam is great. Without the Simran of the Prabhoo, all other pleasures are dull. The glory of the world is a myth. Nothing will exist forever except for the Satnam. Nauranga was happy to understand the truth. The radiance of the Shabad coloured his wisdom. (Sant Giani Sher Singh ji mentions: this is the Shabad that gave Aurangzeb the power to visit Mecca everyday with his mind. He recited this everyday. His past Karma led him to his future actions. It wasn’t until he read the Zafarnama written to him by Guru Gobind Singh ji that he truly understood the power of the Guru. He went to Hell for his actions) His people told him about why Guru ji was not going to come. Baba Ram Rai heard this and got angry. He was full of ego. The Shah understood that the Guru was complete. He was young but his wisdom was deep. The Shah thought to himself: “I shouldn’t insist on meeting him. It’s not a good thing when I think about it.” The Badshah didn’t think about meeting Guru Sahib ji again. He accepted this. He didn’t tell anyone else nor did he say it again.
10-44 Jai Singh’s Pattrani does a Test
One day the Badshah said to Raja Jai Singh: “Sri Guru Har Krishan ji is a child but the whole of Hindustan bows to his feet. Other people and yourself, praise him, saying: “he has many powers.” Everyone praises him. I think one hears from another and begins to praise him. This has spread from one to another and then they begin to follow the Guru. Did you ever test him or rely on what you have heard? Did you think of a method to see if he really has powers? If you haven’t done it before, now’s your chance to test him. If you see the powers, then keep obeying him and be humble in front of him. I’ve seen the powers of his brother. I respect and follow him.” Jai Singh heard this and said: “I don’t want him to say something bad towards to me. It’s not good to test such beings. It’s like playing with baby snakes. If a baby snake bites you, there is no antidote for it. The wise ones can’t save themselves either. If you insist, I will try to test him. I have faith in him. I will test him for making my faith to go deeper. I will worship him in such a way that will show me his powers and the honour stays. I will tell you what happens.” The Badshah said: “if you test the power, it will be like I got his Darshan.” The king of Jaipur spoke to the Badshah. Jai Singh was worried as he came back to his palace: “I hope I don’t get in trouble. I want joy. I don’t want to be in pain.”
At night, the queens of Jai Singh came to him. His palace was beautiful. A nice bed was laid. His pretty queens gathered with him and discussed the Kathas of the Guru. Jai Singh spoke to his Pattrani (his highest queen) about Guru ji: “we need to test Satguru ji. He is young and beautiful. I will bring Guru ji to this home for food and worship. I will worship Guru ji. You should too. The whole Runvaas (the gathering of queens) should be gathered along with the maids and servants. They should all have faith and devotion in Guru ji. They should worship him. He will fulfill all the wishes. Wear expensive jewellery that have shiny gems. Wear pearl tassels. Decorate the palace. All of the Ranis should wear expensive clothes of many colours. Wear many types of clothes. Like colourful clouds with lightening in the middle, your jewellery should shine like that. Sprinkle sandalwood and saffron in the palace. Dress up in good clothes in the palace. The Pattrani, the one whom I love the most, you should wear an old and thick khaddar cotton kurta. Don’t wear jewellery. Dress like a maid. Stay at the back corner with the maids. Don’t come to the front. In your heart, have this wish, “may Guru ji come and find me. May he come sit in my lap if he is the true Guru.” Expensive gifts will be given to Guru ji. We will prepare this in the morning. Have faith in your heart. Do his Darshan with devotion. You are fortunate to see him. He can make your life a success.” The Raja spoke to his Ranis and then went to sleep.
In the morning, the Raja and the queens woke up. They decorated the Rang Mahal. Nice mirrors were hung. The walls had paintings on them. The Ataris were high. They were decorated. Gold work was done on the walls. Trees, fruits and flowers were painted on the wall with small birds drawn in them. Sculptures of lions and other plant-life were in the palace. The palace was beautiful. Rugs and tarps were laid out with expensive work done on them. Many types of canopies were hung with Zarri tassels. A silver stool was laid in the middle that had work on all sides. The middle was made of muslin with pearls hanging off the sides. Diamonds were in the stool that shined. The canopy had golden chatters with gems on them. A round pillow was on the seat. In this way a beautiful room was set, which was very attractive. A lot of expensive jewellery was taken out of the treasury. Colourful clothes were taken out. These were offerings for Guru ji. Golden and silver toys were taken out for Guru ji. Golden horses and elephants were taken out. Everything was prepared. The Raja wanted to bring Guru ji to his home. He prepared everything properly. The Raja of Jaipur, Jaipur Svaee, made preparations.
The omniscient Guru, Guru Har Krishan Sahib ji sensed everything. He knew that Raja Jai Singh was going to test him at the insistence of the Badshah. Guru ji had a deep thought about this. He became worried this day, who was the one that took the worries of others away. Guru ji thought: “why is Jai Singh following the unwise way? The power that I want to hide, he wants me to show it. The saints of Prabhoo don’t like showing the power. They don’t think it’s a good thing. Jai Singh is doing what he shouldn’t. Things can go wrong. Showing powers in the world is what magicians and tricksters do. They try to fool the people and get them to follow them. They do it to loot money from them. Such powerful people lead people towards the wrong path. They don’t think about giving answers in the high court. Both, the tricksters and the followers, forget the Prabhoo. The Guru and the followers drown. This is not considered good in the Satguru’s home. This is not beneficial to the Jeev’s Aatma. Dramas and tricks shown to others is leading them astray. I won’t do this. I won’t show my powers. If I show one, the others would want to see them as well. Who else would I need to show my powers to? I didn’t want to come to Delhi for this reason in the first place. I came seeing the Raja’s love. Now his wisdom has turned on him. He is not wise nor does he think about the long term. He joined the ranks of the Badshah in this matter. He doesn’t want the bliss of the afterlife. He forgot the Simran of the Satnam and got influenced by the Prabhoo’s strong Maya. Doing the Seva of saints and accepting the will of the Prabhoo as sweet; letting go of the ego and doing the Simran of Satnam; this is how the pains are all gone. He has foregone the Amrit and is running towards the poison. He is planting Kikar (Gum Arabic) seeds and wishes to eat the fruits of the Kalapbrish. He is losing the expensive diamond for the cheap crystal due to losing his wisdom.” In this way, Satguru ji thought about this. He was the one who destroyed the worries of taking birth and dying. Seeing the time of Raja Jai Singh’s arrival, Guru ji went inside a room. He told his Sikhs and servants to go away. He sat in solitude. He sat on a beautiful bed with a nice sheet. He then laid down and took a white sheet on top of his body, as he would be sleeping. Satguru ji went into a Samadhi to connect to his real self. He thought about the ways of the people: “without the pure wisdom, these blind people will not make it across this world ocean. They are stuck in their vices and pleasures. They will go to Hell, trapped by the Jumms. They will take births in many life forms. They are fools who don’t try to get out of this maze. They want to see powers and miracles. They don’t take notice of their most important task of understanding their real selves.” Guru ji closed the doors to his room and locked them. Inside the room, Guru ji was laying down in Samadhi. Everyone near him was sent away. Guru ji was alone. The doors were locked from the inside. Everyone was sent far away from his room.
The Raja of Jaipur was happy. He had all of his Ranis gathered in the Runvaas. He wanted to bring Satguru ji. He took some servants and went with humility.
10-45 Jai Singh Comes to take Guru ji
As the afternoon began to fade, Jai Singh was going to leave, making sure everything was prepared for Guru ji’s welcome. Jai Singh left his palace. He soon arrived at the door where Guru ji was staying. The seniors welcomed the Raja. The Raja left his men, who all sat down. The Raja went inside of the home, alone. Where Guru ji was staying with the army, the Raja bowed. The Sikhs got up in his respect. The Sikhs were surprised to the Raja come all of a sudden. They were surprised that the Raja came without notice. He had come with only a few of his men. The clothes the Raja was wearing were not suitable for wearing in a court. They were quite simple for him. The Sikhs all wondered why the Raja came late in the afternoon without any news. The Sikhs thought: “maybe the Badshah sent him for an important task.” The Raja looked around to find Guru ji. He saw the Sikhs and the warriors but not Guru ji. He was surprised. He asked the Sikhs: “where is the true Guru, the giver of joy? I don’t see him. Has he gone out somewhere far? I don’t see him on his seat. You aren’t with him either if he has gone out.” The Sikhs heard this and said: “Guru ji is inside in one of the rooms. He is alone. He wanted to be alone. He told everyone to leave him in solitude. The ways of the Satguru cannot be known. We don’t know why he is alone.”
When the Raja figured out where Guru ji was, he began walking towards the room. He thought to himself: “I wonder if he is upset or not well. Why is he like this today? He is usually happy and smiling. I will make sure to make him happy in every way. I will hope he can bless me and come to me home. I would want him to be happy in Delhi. Only then will I be blessed if he has happy.” As the Raja came close to the door where Guru ji was, he shook the door slightly. He realised that the door was locked. He stood there and said: “Prabhoo ji, please open the door. See me as your servant and give me your blessed Darshan.” The Raja said this two or three times. Guru ji did not speak. He remained quiet. The Raja spoke up louder than before on his fourth try: “Guru ji, please open the door. I am the King of Jaipur who has come for your Darshan. I come to your sanctuary. I am your servant. You are my support. I am imperfect. If I have made a mistake then please forgive me. You are omnipotent and omniscient. You are forgiving. Please guide me like a father guides his son with love. Oh Master, if I have spoiled something, please stop me, seeing me as your servant.” When the Raja said this, Satguru ji heard this and discarded all his thinking. The Guru’s anger is weaker than a line drawn in the water. He forgave the Raja. Guru ji got up and unlocked the door. He went back to his bed and sat down again, quietly. The Raja heard the lock opening up. He slowly pushed the door open and entered the room. He saw Guru ji. Guru ji had his eyes lowered as if he was upset. He didn’t look towards the Raja. The Raja bowed and sat on the floor. He folded his hands and sat on the bare floor, without any tarp or rug. He became humble and said: “Sri Satguru ji, why are you worried? What is the reason that you are worried? Please tell me. This is not my home. It is yours. You command everything I have. It is all yours. You are the king, not me. There are servants and maids in the home. They all wish to do your Seva. Army, treasury, public and the wealth, this is all yours. Command me. I am your servant, as well as my army and public. Please command me. If I make a mistake, please tell me. Please tell my people if they make a mistake. Please forgive my mistakes and give me wisdom. Don’t worry about the Badshah. I am on good terms with him. He is happy with you. You don’t need to worry about him. You complete the tasks of the whole world. You complete your own tasks as well. We have no power or capability to do anything for you. You do our work. Whatever is your wish, you do everything and then you give us the greatness. Please say something with your holy mouth. The Shah does not wish to see you anymore. He knows of your greatness. He is happy with your wish. He knows that you are above everything. If I have made a mistake, please forgive me and give me Bhuddi. Your vow of not meeting the Turk, that will remain. Your vow won’t be touched by anyone.”
Guru ji heard these words. Satguru ji looked up towards the Raja and said: “Gurus and saints like to keep some things hidden. The people of the world want them to reveal their secrets. You shouldn’t try to look into another’s pocket to see how much money is in there. Nobody shows their money. They all hide it. To see another’s wealth, to try to do this, the one who tries this, the rich people don’t like such a person. The one who follows the rich people by minding their own business, they are in joy and without pain.” Guru ji made the Raja understand his mistake. The Raja knew what he had done wrong but he couldn’t let go of his wish to test Guru ji. He folded his hands and said: “all of my queens wish to see you. They have heard of your praises and want to see you. They want you to come to my Runvaas. They have prepared the place for your visit. I have come to take you. If we make a mistake please forgive us. It is your ancient promise to fulfill the wishes of your servants. Please see us as your servant. Please give us your Darshan in our home. The Ranis wish to see you. They are looking towards your path. You are the complete Purakh who is under the spell of love. You are the Shiromani. Please set your lotus feet in my home. Make my family and I blessed, oh Master of the weak. Place your loving hand on our heads. See us as your own and take care of us. Destroy our many obstacles. A son errs in front of the father because of being unwise. The father forgives the son and becomes loving like before. He doesn’t think of anything then. See me as your child. I would be blessed then. Don’t think of my mistakes. Love us like your children. Come to the Runvaas and fulfill their wishes. I have told my Ranis that I will bring you.” Sri Guru Har Krishan ji heard the Raja’s pleas and couldn’t refuse him. He heard the request of the Raja of Jaipur and discarded his anger. He got ready to go. The Raja became happy.
Guru ji came outside and sat on a seat. He asked a servant for water. When the water came, Guru ji washed his hands and feet. He washed his face with the water and wiped everything with a handkerchief. He tied a Dastaar Cheera with a beautiful Jigha with expensive diamonds and gold. He tied a Kalgi. He looked beautiful. He was decorated with precious gems. His Chola was made of a fine fabric with a beautiful border. His scarf had Zarri on it. He wore shoes with Zarri on it. He held a cane with flowers. It was very expensive and attractive. The cane was full of powers. Guru ji got ready to go with the Raja. The Raja was happy. The Raja stopped his servants: “don’t go with me. Stay here.” Guru ji went with the Raja. Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “I am a sacrifice to the beautiful form of the Guru.”
