10-21 The Glory of Gurbani/ The Ship of Sikhi Ripped

Sri Satguru Har Rai Sahib ji spent his time in Kiratpur.  He gave bliss to his Sikhs.  The sinners were punished in pain.  One day, the Compassionate One was sitting on his beautiful bed when he saw his time to rest.  Guru ji laid down to take his afternoon nap.  He took upon him a blanket made of a fine fabric.  A few Sikhs were sitting with Guru ji.  After a while, two Sikhs were arriving from some land.  They were singing Shabads.  They had faith and devotion in their hearts.  They had a lot of love.  They sang in beautiful Raags in a great pitch.  They knew Raag Vidya who made the Sangat happy with their Kirtan.  They came to Guru ji to have his Darshan.  They saw that Guru ji was resting from a distance.  They thought to themselves: “should we sing Shabads at this time or not?  We don’t want Guru ji to be disturbed by our singing.  We don’t want him to be angry at us.  We don’t want to wake him up.  Satguru ji is never asleep though.  He is always in the Turiya state.  He is the witness of all 3 states (awake, sleep and deep sleep).  He is not drenched by this world like the lotus never being wet by the water.  He will listen to the Simran and be happy with us.”  They continued singing after thinking about this.  The beautiful pitch of the Raags created love in their hearts.

Satguru ji heard the singing of Gurbani and woke up.  Satguru ji quickly got up and got off his bed.  He got up all of a sudden and hurt his knee by bumping it on the post of one of the sides of the bed.  Guru ji didn’t care though.  He got up and folded his hands.  Guru ji’s knee and a small cut on it.  It began to bleed, slightly.  The Sikhs saw this and quickly began to massage his knee.  The Sikhs folded their hands and said: “Sri Satguru ji, why did you get up so quickly from your nap?  The Shabads are made of your words which bless the people.  You made the Bani easy for everyone to understand.  Why are you in doubt about this?  Why did you get up so quickly?  You bumped your knee as you got up so anxiously.”  Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “listen Sikhs, you are my beloved ones.  Listen to why I got up so quickly: the Guru’s deepest form lives in Gurbani.  The glory of Gurbani is great and beautiful beyond belief.  It takes you across the world ocean.  It is the ship that takes you across.  It gives bliss to the Sikhs.  Reciting it destroys the vices.  It is the lion for the deer-like desires.  It is like the elephant that cuts the trees of pain.  It creates the fire of Gyaan.  The Sikhs who respect and obey Gurbani, they will cross the world without any effort.  The glory of Gurbani is greater than great.  If I don’t set this tradition, then the Sikhs won’t respect Gurbani to this level.  Without fear and respect, no one can get Mukti.  I let go of the bed quickly by the fear and respect of Gurbani.  The Sikh should earn the Shabad of Gurbani.  They will get the highest status in this way.  The body which doesn’t have Bhagti and devotion; don’t have the fear and respect for Gurbani; without this fear and respect, Bhagti cannot be achieved.  Without Bhagti, Gyaan cannot come.  Without Gyaan, how can you get Mukti?  Without Mukti, you can’t immerse into the ultimate bliss, the Anand.  This is a cause-and-effect chain.  The fear and respect of Gurbani gives bliss.  Without fear, respect and Bhagti, one can’t get Mukti even if one goes to Teeraths, holds fasts or practices Yogas of various types.  The Bhagat of the Guru is my Sikh.  The Sikh will fear and respect Gurbani.  “Jin bhai adhab na Bani dhara, jaanho so Sikh nahi hamara,” who does not fear and respect Bani, that person is not my Sikh.”  The Sikhs heard the importance and glory of Gurbani.  They folded their hands and bowed their heads.  The Sikhs who were singing Gurbani said: “Satguru ji please bless us.  Please bless us so we may respect Gurbani by which we can receive Mukti.  We wish to have the respect and fear of Gurbani in our hearts so we can get Mukti.  We want to feel the love of Gurbani.  We can be saved in this way.  We want the glory of Gurbani to dwell in our hearts so our Karma can be destroyed.”  Guru ji was happy to hear this and blessed them with boons: “the ones whose minds are connected to the wisdom of the Guru; they will be awakened from the deep sleep of countless births.  This is the sign of the awakened mind: they love the Guru’s Bani.  Great are the Sikhs who love Gurbani.  Their minds are like the fish in water.  The Sikh is great whose forest like mind has the lion of Gurbani roaming in it.  In the lock of doubt, Gurbani is the key that opens it.  The Bhagti, Vairagya and Gyaan is in Gurbani.  The Bhagat eats this.  It is the like the sandalwood which gives smell to other trees of the mind.  The ones who are fortunate, they find Gurbani sweet.  Without Karma, this cannot be.  How else can they saved in Kaliyuga?”  Satguru ji gave this wisdom to the Sikhs.  He wanted his servants to be Mukat.

One day, Guru ji mounted his clever horse and travelled with a lot of Sikhs.  He travelled and saw a high hill.  He stood there on the high mountain.  There were more mountains around.   A lot of Sangat was with him.  Guru ji came off his horse and stood there.  The Sikhs stood with him, drenched in his love.  Guru ji stood there for a long time.  The Sangat was surprised at why Guru ji was standing there.  The Sikhs got tired standing there.  Their legs got tired.  The Sangat folded their hands and asked: “Sri Satguru ji, you are omniscient.  You give Mukti to your Sikhs.  Why are you standing here?  There are no flowers here.  There is no garden here.  There is no great view here.  Only mountains.  Small ones.  What are you looking at?  There must be a reason why you are standing here.  We can’t see it thought.  The Sangat is surprised.  They are asking what your wish is.”  Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “listen Sikhs, all of the Sangat: to save the world, Sri Nanak Baba ji destroyed hypocrisy.  His ship was great and huge.  That ship is caught in a whirlpool now.  It is not reaching the shore.  I am watching it break into many pieces.  Everyone is splitting up and starting their own things.  The ship is in the middle of the whirlpool.  Some are going the wrong way and drowning.  Only some reach the shore.  Everyone started their own way.  I am seeing that.”  Hearing the scary scenario, the Sikhs got scared.  They became humble and said: “Sri Guru ji what are you seeing?  We don’t know what your wish is.  We don’t understand you.  Please tell us by which your servants can understand.  Please tell us.”  The Compassionate One heard this and smiled.  He said: “oh Sikhs, the servants have forgot the true path.  They are stuck in doubts.  They are stuck in greed and wealth.  They worship hypocrisy.  Many fragile people call themselves “Gurus.”  They have little power and show the world.  The ones with fragile wisdoms follow them.  They follow the wrong path and don’t reach Mukti.  They left the righteous path and follow the fragile one.  They left Bhagti and walk some other path.  How will the achieve the Parmatma?  They do Simran of whatever Mantra they get and then slander the Mantra and the person they get it from.  The ship is getting wrecked.  It is in pieces now.”  The Sikhs heard this and were amazed.  They all stayed quiet for a while.  They then understood Guru ji’s radiance and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, you are the forgiving one.  You save your Sikhs.  If there is a fault in the Sangat, what you have said right now, when will you fix your ship?  How long will it stay broken?  It is your name and it is your honour.  Will you fix it or not for the Sangat?  You always look out for your Sangat.  You give everyone the treasure of Bhagti.  You can return what is lost.  You are omnipotent and complete in every way.  You are the doer and praised one.”  Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “for some time, this chaos will remain.  There will be conflicts for some time.  The Masands will fool and deceive the Sikhs.  They will be enticed by greed and wealth.  The Sangat will be in doubt seeing the Masands.  They will be filled with ego.  When I come in the 10th incarnation, I will host the Degh (cauldron) and the Tegh (Sword).  I will destroy the hypocrites and illuminate the glory of the saints.  I will gather everyone and join the ship.  The pure Panth will illuminate.  I will punish the sinners.  The Panth will know the One Satguru.  The broken ones will get on the Ship of the Panth again.  They will be saved from this ocean then.  I will save my Sangat.  I will give the Bhagti of the One.  I will have many servants.  They will board the ship in great numbers.  I will create such a Panth.”  The Sikhs heard the words and became happy.  They said: “Dhan Satguru, you are the mine of virtues.  Great are those who know you.  Whoever meditates on your lotus feet, you cut their problems.”  They all bowed to Guru ji.  The Guru is all-powerful.  The Guru is the form of Parmeshwar.

10-22 Puranic Prasang – Dhundh and Uttanka Rikhi’s Katha

Sri Satguru Har Rai ji blessed Lakhs of Sikhs.  He gave the Sikhs the Bhagti of Satnam and saved them all at once.  Guru ji saw that the time of his body was coming to an end.  He thought to himself: “he (Sri Harkrishan Sahib ji) is young but he is full of virtues.  He is great.  I wish to have him seated on the Takhat.”  The Sikhs from the east and south were many.  Many Sikhs lived in the west and north.  Many Masands lived there who collected Lakhs of Dasvands and brought them to Guru ji.  The complete Guru wrote Hukamnamas: “come as soon as you see this Hukamnama.  Bring all of the Sangat here by inspiring them and motivating them to come.”  Many messengers were sent in every direction with the Hukamnamas.  They went to wherever the Masands were.

The Masands got the Hukamnamas and gathered their Sangat.  They all came to Kiratpur as soon as they could.  The Sangat came from every direction.  They brought beautiful gifts.  When they got their turn, they did the Darshan of Sri Satguru Har Rai ji.  They did his Darshan and then went to the Langar to eat the many delicacies made.  The Sangat was seated in lines and the Langar was distributed.  Guru ji sat with the Sangat and ate Langar as well.  The Sangat was satiated after eating.  Guru ji gave the wisdom of Bhagti to all.  The Bhagti would make Guru ji fall under the Bhagat’s spell.

Guru ji said to the Sangat of a Katha about a Rishi named Uttanka (also known as Uttanga) and a Daith named Dhundh: “there is nothing in this world that a Bhagat cannot influence the Parmatma to do.  There is such a Puratan Katha about this.  With Prema Bhagti, the Parmeshwar was influenced to do something the Bhagat wanted to do.  From the body of Mudhkaytab was born a great son named Dhundh.  His body was fierce.  He did a strict Tapasya by extreme means.  He didn’t eat or drink anything.  He stood on one foot.  He won his words and did not speak.  He raised his arms into the air without any support.  He tolerated all this pain on his body to do his Tapasya.  He stopped his mind and Indriyas (senses).  He stayed still and consumed air.  He did a very strict Tapp like this.  He received many boons from the Devatas.  He got a lot of strength in his arms.  He received a lot of powers.  He could run to wherever he wanted to on earth.  He became egotistical.  He attacked and won the places of the Devatas.  Nobody could face him on the battlefield.  His form was fierce.  His teeth were huge.  His eyes were red.  His colour was black.  He tried to look for Vishnu Bhagavan.  Wherever he heard of his whereabouts, he reached that place.  He couldn’t find him though.  He couldn’t fight him.  The other Devatas couldn’t face him.  They were all afraid of him.  They didn’t dare fight him.  Dhundh had a lot of ego because of this.  He went to many Devatas to their homes.  He won every direction.  Wherever he went, people were afraid of him.  He was victorious.  When he got tired, he laid down to sleep.  He slept for a long time.  He didn’t wake for many years.  Dirt accumulated over his body.  Many trees grew over him.  His body was huge.  He would take one breath in one year.  When he would breathe, a lot of dust would fly around him.  Rocks would fly and wind storms would happen.  The dust would cover many lands.  This would bother many life forms.  It would give them pain.  When he would breathe from his nose, the earth would shake.  Earthquicks would occur.  Many trees would get uprooted by his breath.  The breath would make wind storms.  His whole body was covered with dirt.  People couldn’t tell it was his body there.  Where his nostrils were, people thought there were deep caves in a mountain there.  The rest of his body was huge, covered in sand and dirt.  Not one sign of his body could be seen.  A lot of dirt buried his body.  After a year, his breath would come from his nostrils.  People thought the caves of the mountain had a strong wind coming from them.  In this way, this is how the Daint was.  His body was fierce and couldn’t be seen.

Uttanka Muni, a Rishi who did Bhagti of Vishnu, had his Ashram there.  He did a deep Tapasya.  He lit 5 types of fires around himself and did Tapasya.  In the “Him” (winter) season, he sat in the water.  He ate fruits and flowers from the jungle.  He did the Simran of Vishnu continuously.  His heart became pure.  He did a strict Tapp like this.  He controlled his mind and Indriyas.  He was without jealousy.  He won his desires and vices.  He won his Indriyas and had patience.  He was an Aatma who followed the Dharma.  He recited the Vedas.  He was calm and wise.  He had a sweet personality and was serene.  He stayed in Samadhi by stopping his breath.  He did the meditation of Vishnu.  He thought of the red and sweet feet of Vishnu.  They were radiant.  The legs of Bhagavan were like a banana tree.  Vishnu had radiant yellow clothes, a wide chest, long arms, Vaijanti Mala in his neck, golden hoops in his ears, a golden chain around his waist with bells, weapons on his body, his body was dark, he wore a crown, thick black hair; this is the form the Rishi meditated on.  The Munni sat still like this without any thoughts.  He did a strict Tapp.  The Prabhoo saw this love.  The Compassionate One came to visit the Rishi in his Ashram.  The Rishi did the Darshan and was in bliss beyond belief.  They Munni bowed by lying on the floor straight.   He folded his hands and did the Darshan.  He said: “I received my reward today.”  The Purshotam Prabhoo saw Uttanka Rishi’s love and said: “you will receive the Vivek by seeing the truth from the false.  You will receive the Gyaan of your Aatma.  You will get my status.  You will be one with me.  Your wisdom is within my feet.  You are doing the Tapasya.  Whoever is disturbing your Tapasya, I will destroy him myself.  The one who gives pain to the Devatas, I will kill him.  He will die.  You should go to where the Raja, who is born in the house of Ikhvaak, lives.  His name is Raja Kuvalayashva (Kavi Santokh Singh ji does not mention his name.  Various Kathavachaks have mentioned various names but the name in the ancient texts of the Raja is written as Kuvalayashva).   He follows the Dharma.  He has a big army and a lot of wealth.  Go and inspire him to kill this demon.  Give him hope that Bhagavan will help him.  The body of the Daint is huge.  He is radiant and strong.  The king is not as strong as he is.  His power is less in front of the Daint.  I will enter the Raja’s body when he fights.  I will give him my radiance.  The Raja will feel this and come here to fight.  He will challenge the Daint to fight.  I will fight in him.  This Daint gives pain to Devatas, saints and others.  I will come in human body to kill him.  I can’t kill him in my form.  He will receive Mukti then.  He received boons to be fearless from me.”  In this way, the Master inspired Uttanka to go to Kuvalayashva.  The Prabhoo disappeared.  Uttanka knew what to do, as Vishnu ji told him.  He took his power after seeing Sri Prabhoo ji.  He was happy and went to Ayodhya.  Utanka was radiant and Dharmik.  He won his Indriyas.  He wanted to kill the Daint and understood the way to do it.

10-23 Getting ready to Fight Dhundh

Uttanka went to Ayodhya and came to the gate.  He said to the gatekeeper: “inform the Raja of my arrival.  Uttanka Muni is standing at his door.  I wish to meet him once.”  The gatekeeper quickly went inside the palace and told the Raja.  When Raja Kuvalayashva heard about the arrival of the Muni, he quickly got up to go to the front gate.  He brought the items needed for Pooja.  He bowed to the feet of the Rishi and then washed his feet.  He brought the Rishi to his court with great respect.  He asked how the Rishi was: “I am fortunate to host you today.  You destroy many obstacles with your Darshan.  Please make your arrival successful and tell me the reason for your visit.”  Uttanka Muni heard this and told the Raja the reason for his visit: “Dhundh Daint has caused many problems.  He is a thorn for the Munis and Devatas.  He gives them pain, everyday.  Make an effort to kill him.  You are a Kshatriya and a great warrior.  Don’t think about your strength.  Don’t doubt it.  Take the power of the Prabhoo and kill the Daint.  Kill the Daint and you will be praised forever.  Ballads of your strength will be sung in the world.  Make the world fearless by killing the Daint.  Stop the Daint.  Collect your strength and get ready to fight.  You will be praised while being alive.  You will get Mukti after you die.  Think about the Dharma of the Kshatriya Dharma.  Don’t think about big or small.  You will be filled with many virtues when you fight.  You will become great.  When you fight, the Bhagavan will come inside you to fight.  You will be one with Parmatma when you fight.  You will be in bliss because of this.  When I did a strict Tapp, Prabhoo gave me his Darshan.  It is by his direction that I came to you to give you this mission.  The Prabhoo wants to kill the Daint.”  The Raja heard this and was filled with bliss, saying: “I know I will be filled with many qualities.  To fight is my Dharma.  Oh Muni, on top of this, I will get to obey your command.  Thirdly, I will be One with the Master of the Universe, whom I bow my forehead to.  My bonds and problems will be destroyed.  I am so fortunate oh Muniver.”  The Raja was motivated and determined to go and fight.

The Raja had huge arms.  He fastened his weapons.  He had 21,000 sons.  He prepared them to go along with him.  They all fastened their weapons and were ready to go with their father.  He took 1 Achoohani (around 400k) soldiers and were ready to go fight.  Elephants, horses and chariots made a lot of noise.  Battle Standards, flags, of different colours were waiving in the wind.  They were unfurled as the army set off.  Many types of instruments: conches, Nagaras, Narsinghas and others played.  The Raja and the army celebrated before going to war.  As they set off, the Devatas came to help them.  They all wanted to kill Dhundh.  The bows were strung.  They were pulled to test the tightness.  The quivers were filled with sharp arrows.  The swords shined in the light of the sun.  They were tied to the waists of the soldiers.  The Brahmins, who were winners of their Indriyas and knowledgeable of the Vedas, came and blessed the army.  They blessed them with the boon of being victorious.  The elephants, horses and chariots looked radiant.  They were all saddled and prepared.  The chariots moved and the horses danced.  The warriors were eager to fight.  The spears and swords were in the heads of the warriors.  Big stone launchers were prepared.  Whips and mudhgars were taken.  All of the preparations were made.  The army set off.  Expensive gems, gold and precious stones were called by the Raja and given to the beggars, Bhikshoos and poor.  The Raja wanted them to bless the army.  The Raja made everyone happy.  They all headed towards the Daint and set off.  Turiyas, Nagaras, Dhundhabs and gomukhs played.  Pattas and dhols were played which inspired the Bhatts and the warriors to fight.

The fearless Uttanka led the way, showing the Raja where Dhundh is.  All of the sons of the Raja went with the Raja.  They wanted to fight the Daint.  They travelled the whole day and rested the night.  They were all careful as the travelled.  The soldiers were happy to go to war.  They were ready to lay their life for their Raja.  The horses and bulls were big and strong.  They were decorated and wore jewellery.  The warriors wore jewellery.  They were eager to go to war.  They celebrated as they moved.  They said: “we will kill the Daint!”   They each said: “it will be I, who kills him!”  The dirt and sand extended far into the distance.  It was many miles long; under which the Daint was sleeping.  He had been sleeping for a long time.  Uttanka Rishi told the army everything.  He said: “this is where Dhundh is sleeping.  It seems like a mountain but it’s the body of the Daint.  There is soil on top of him.  He has been sleeping for many years.  The warriors will have to remove the soil.  When it’s all dug away, we can kill him.  Strike your weapons on his body.  He will wake up then.”  The Raja set up camp and sent the army there.

The army took shovels and began to dig.  Many soldiers dug.  A lot of noise was made to wake up the Daint.  They jumped and yelled on top of the sandy mountains.  They were in attention with their weapons.  They jumped hard on top of the Daint.  The kicked and jumped to wake the Daint up.  They removed the soil in many ways.  They said: “now we will kill the Daint.”

Seven days had passed since the soldiers began to dig.  They kept digging in many ways.  They finally saw the black body of the Daint.  The Daint took a deep breath.  Many men flew away into the air by his breath.  They landed many miles away in the jungle.  A great chaos unfurled.  They all saw the body of the Daint.  The Daint moved his body and got up.  He opened his eyes and wiped the soil off of his body.  He was fierce looking.  He saw the army standing around him to fight.  When he heard the noise, he prepared himself to fight.

10-24 Dhundhoo Daint Dies

“Hearing the loud noise, the Daint woke up and became alert.  He was really big.  His head looked like the summit of a mountain.  He dusted himself off and stood up.  He was eager to fight.  He was strong.  He had been victorious over many Devatas.  On the other side, the Raja was on his chariot.  He wanted to destroy the thorn of the world.  Kuvalayashva stood with his sons and his army.  They all had their weapons with them.  Their weapons were fierce.  They wanted to kill the Daint.  They all began to release their sharp arrows.  Dhundh saw this and smiled.  He spoke in a very scary voice: “oh king, who are you?  You haven’t seen my strength yet.  You aren’t even equal to one morsel of food for me.  Why are you standing in front of me foolishly?  Why did you awake the sleeping lion?  I have made the armies of the Devatas run away.  Nobody can face me.  The 3 Loks are afraid of me.  How did you not know this?  You came to the mouth of death.”  The Raja heard this and did not leave his courage or patience.  He said: “I may not be as strong as you but I am a Kshatriya.  I will give you a fierce battle.  Victory and loss are in the hands of Prabhoo.”  He made the anger in his mind grow even more.  He gave the order to his army to fire their weapons.  Many sharp arrows were shot towards the Daint’s body.  The sons of the Raja were at the front.  They surrounded the Daint and released their arrows.  Many arrows showered on top of Dhundh.  Spears, Bhasundis with rocks, maces and sharp swords were used.  Many conches were blown along with many playing instruments.  A lot of noises were made on the battlefield.  Dhundhoo got really angry as the weapons pricked his body.  He grabbed the soldiers by their feet and threw them far.  Some he slammed on the ground, smashing their bodies.  Some he kicked and killed.  Some he picked up and ate.  Some he squished between his hands.  Some he ripped apart.  There was mud everywhere from the blood.  The sky was covered in dust.  He ripped many soldiers apart.  In this way, a fierce battle took place.  The soldiers all yelled: “kill him!”  He was like Kumbakaran.  The Daint was standing in anger.  He fought a fierce battle.  The sons of the Raja grabbed many types of weapons.  They came to fight.  It was like flocks of birds coming to a mountain.  They came close and hit the Daint with many weapons.  A lot of noise was made.  No words could be heard.  The sky was filled with arrows.  The arrows hit the body of the Daint, like snakes going into their burrows in a mountain.  The swords flashed as they hit the Daint.  The swords looked like lightening flashing on a mountain.  Maces and spears were used.  To kill the scary Daint, many weapons were used.  Dhundh got really angry.  He was filled with energy.  He killed many soldiers with his hands and his feet.  He didn’t let anyone stand in front of him.  He killed many princes and soldiers.  He killed them and piled them up.  A great fear spread throughout the battlefield.  Rivers of blood were flowing.  The Daint was dirty from his own blood flowing as well.  They looked like springs of blood coming from a mountain.  He roared loud which sounding like thundering clouds.  He kept killing many soldiers.  Many were injured on the battlefield.  They slowly died.  Some were flung into the sky.  They could be seen like flying birds.  Many were trampled under the Daint’s feet.  He destroyed chariots and horses under his feet.  He killed the elephants with his hands.  He grabbed them by their trunks and smashed them together.  The chariots were smashed to dust.  He threw many horses up into the sky.  Nobody stood in front of the Daint.  Many soldiers had died.  Only a few were left.  The great warrior killed many soldiers.  He killed the remaining soldiers.  He killed the 21,000 sons of the Raja in anger.  Just as Kapil Munni killed the 60,000 sons of Raja Saggar, that’s how he killed Kuvalayashva’s sons.  Only 3 sons of the Raja remained.

Raja Kuvalayashva got angry and then got ready to fight.  He came in front of Dhundh and picked up his fierce bow.  He was decked in golden armour.  He faced the Daint with courage.  As soon as he stood to fight, the Kamalapat (a name of Vishnu) quickly came and entered Kuvalayashva’s body.  He was eager to fight then.  He became very strong.  Kuvalayashva sensed his immense strength.  He felt like Dhundh had no strength at all in front of him.  Kuvalayashva released many arrows.  The arrows pierced Dhundh, which made springs of blood sprout from his body.  Dhundh got angry and picked up a huge boulder, the size of a mountain.  The Raja saw this and collected his strength.  He took out an Ardhchandrakaar arrow and mounted it on his bow.  He pulled the arrow and released it.  The arrow destroyed the boulder that was hurled towards him.  Many trees were pulled by the Daint and flung towards the Raja.  The Raja sliced the trees in the air with his arrows.  A duel carried on.  None left the field.  They fought fiercely.  Dhundh picked up a boulder and came towards the Raja to kill him.  As he came close, the Raja quickly grabbed his sword and cut off the arm of Dhundh that was carrying the boulder.  The arm fell to the ground with boulder in hand.  Dhundhoo got angry seeing his arm being cut.  He took his other hand and killed the horses and the charioteer of the Raja.  The Raja jumped off his chariot and came to the ground.  Dhundh picked up another boulder and advanced toward the Raja.  The Raja saw this and stood on the ground to kill the enemy.  The boulder fell on the Raja’s chariot.  The Raja challenged and swung his sword.  He cut the other arm of Dhundh.  Dhundh had no more hands.  Blood flowed from his two sides.  Dhundh then came towards the Raja with his mouth wide open.  He wanted to crush the Raja with his scary teeth.  The Raja quickly took his bow and mounted an ardhchandrakaar arrow.  He fired it towards the Daint’s mouth.  He fired many more arrows into the demon’s mouth.  As the Daint came close, the Raja collected his strength and sliced the head of Dhundh with his sword.  The head of Dhundh fell on to the ground along with his body.  Many soldiers squished under his body.  Many were pushed and died.  In this way, Dhundh died.  The sky became pure.  Peace quickly spread.  All of the problems were gone.  Nature breathed in peace.

The Devatas came to Raja Kuvalayashva and spoke sweet words: “you killed a great sinner and made the whole world joyful.  You shall be known as “Dhundhmaar” from now on.  You will be praised in the word.  You have only 3 sons remaining from 21,000.  Your family will grow from these 3 sons.  Ram Chander ji will take a birth in your family.  The Kamalapatti will take birth in your family.  Because the Bhagavan came into your body, he will take a birth as your descendent.  By whose strength you killed the Daith, he will come to your home.”  The Devatas went back to their dimensions.  The Raja went back to his palace.

Since then, the Raja was known as Dhundhmaar.  Everyone knew of his name.  In the history of Ramayana, his name has been written by the poets.”

In this way, Guru Har Rai ji told this Katha to the Sangat: “look at how the Parmeshwar came inside another to kill the Daint.  He completed the task of Rishi Uttanka.  This is the glory of the Prabhoo.  Do his Simran.  He will help you during your end-time.  You will be released from the cycle of birth and death.  You will receive the highest status which will be forever.”

10-25 The Katha of Getting Ghaalav’s 600 Horses

“Now listen to the Katha of Satsang and about keeping faith in the Guru.  Listen to this Katha with love and ingrain it into your heart.  You will be blessed in a great way.  Vishvamittar was the king of the Munnis.  He did a lot of Tapasya to achieve the status of Brahm Rishi.  He had a Sikh named Ghaalav who became a Brahm Rishi from being a Raj Rishi.  He gained all of his wisdom from Vishvamittar.  He said to his Guru: “please take the Guru Dakshina (the fee a student gives to the Guru for providing knowledge).  Tell me what to give you.”  Vishvamittar said: “I don’t wish to take the Dakshana.  Whatever you have said with love, I consider this as my Dakshana.”  Ghaalav said: “Vidya does not give fruit without donation.  It is right to ask.  Whatever you think is good, I will give you.  Without giving it, I will not be at peace.  Please command me as you wish.”  Vishvamittar stopped his student many times.  He refused the fee but Ghaalav didn’t listen.  He said: “please take it.”  Vishvamittar got angry and spoke words which were impossible: “alright, black ears, the body should be white coloured like the moon; have a lot of hair, 800 of them; I want such horses.  Bring them to me.”  Ghaalav heard this and got worried.  Without effort, he was worried and kept thinking about this.  He thought to himself: “my Guru has asked for this now.  It’s better to die.  How will I fulfill this wish?  My wish won’t be fulfilled.  Where shall I go to look for such horses?  I’ve never heard of such horses before.”  The Munni was worried.

Garud, the son of Vinta, came to know of this as he was Ghaalav’s friend.  He came to Ghaalav and spoke to him, seeing him as helpless: “Ghaalav, why are you worried?  What wish has not been fulfilled of yours?  I am your friend.  I have come to you.  Tell me what your task is.  Whatever I can do, I will do for you.  I will fulfill your wish by applying my strength.  The east is very bright.  The great Devatas live there.  The mouth of the Prithvi (earth) is there.  The sun arises from that side.  From the side of the south, Dharmaraja lives there.  The doors to the Pataals are there.  Many types of virtues are there.  It is praised in many ways.  The west direction is protected by Varuna, where the sun sets.  The north is virtuous as that is where Kuber’s city is.  Wherever you want to go, let’s go!  I will take you where you want to go.”  Ghaalav heard this and said: “my Guru asked for a lot of horses that have black ears and have white bodies like the moon.  Tell me where are such 800 horses?  In which home are they?  How can I bring them here?  If I can’t give my Dakshana, I will give my life.  It will be better to die because my life will be damned.  This is a big pain to give the 800 horses.”  The son of Vinta gave hope to Ghaalav and picked him up on his back right away.  He flew to many places with him.  He wanted to relieve his friend’s pain.

Where Raja Jujaati lived, the king of the birds reached there.  The Munni asked the Raja: “oh Raja Jujaati, you are wise.  Give me 800 horses.  I ask them for my Guru’s Dakshana.”  Jujaati heard this and said: “I have given a lot of donations in a Yagna.  I gave everything away.  I don’t see anything in my home anymore that I can give you.  I can’t complete your wish.  I can’t rid you of your worry.  I have a daughter in my home (her name is written as “Madhavi” in the Mahabharat.  She was the daughter of Devayani and the maternal granddaughter of Shukra.  She had the boon of being a virgin after giving birth.  She was also blessed to be the mother of 4 great kings).  You can take her.  She can complete your wish.  Whichever king you gave this daughter to, that king will give you 800 horses.  My daughter if full of virtues and beautiful.  There is no other like her in this world.”  Hearing Jujaati’s words, Ghaalav got happy and took the daughter.  Garud went to his home.

Ghaalav took the girl and went to Ayodhya.  He went to the king of Ayodhya’s door (known as Haryasva as per the Mahabharat).  He went to the Raja and said: “listen Narinder, this is Jujaati’s daughter.  Take her as your wife and give me 800 horses with black ears.  This girl is beautiful and virtuous.  She will bare you a strong son.  She is good for you.  Her waist is skinny and her eyes are wide.  Her body is attractive.”  The king then said: “listen radiant Tapasvi, I have 200 such horses that you wish for.  I don’t have more than that in my home.  You can go and see them.”  Ghaalav said: “take this girl.  There is no other girl better than her.  You will get one son from her who will be a great being.  Give me the 200 horses and the girl back then.”  He left the girl there and went to the jungle to do Tapp.

The Raja of Ayodhya made the girl his wife and procreated with her, wishing for a son.  After a while, the girl became pregnant.  She then bore a son (Vasumanas, as per the Mahabharat) who was beautiful.  Seeing the time, Ghaalav came back to Ayodhya and asked the Raja to give him back the girl.  Seeing the Munni as radiant, the Raja said: “take the girl.”  The Munni said: “I will leave my 200 horses here.  When my task is done, I will take the 200 horses back from you.”  He then took the girl and head off.

The Munni then went to Kanshi.  He met the king of Kanshi and said: “oh Prabhoo Divodas, listen: this girl is virtuous and beautiful.  Take her as your wife and give me 600 horses.”  Divodas heard this and said: “I have only 200 horses with black ears and white bodies.  Oh Muniver, take the 200.”  The Rishi said: “if you give me 200, when you gain a son, give me the girl and 200 horses back.”  Ghaalav went to the jungle and did Tapasya.  Divodas made the girl his wife and procreated with her with joy.

After a year, a strong and handsome son was born to the Raja.  The son was known as “Dunn.”   He was a great worrier who killed his enemy with eagerness.  He went to the Loks of the Devatas once and fought a battle with them.  Inder and the other Devatas, Dunn made all of them unconscious with one arrow.  This is known in history.  Divodas’s son was then born after a year.  The Munni went back to the king after the boy was born.  He said to the king: “give me the girl back.”  The king gave the girl back along with 200 horses.  He fulfilled his promise.  The Munni said: “keep the horses with you for now.  I will take them when I wish to.”  Ghaalav took the girl and left.  He was a great Tapasvi.

Ghaalav then went to Usseenar Raja (of Bhoj).  He showed the Raja the girl.  The Raja said: “I have 200 horses.  I will give them to you after getting a son.”  Ghaalav made the deal and went to the jungle to do his Tapasya with joy.  After Ghaalav left, Usseenar had union with the girl.  After a year passed, a son, who followed the Dharam, was born.  He was named “Shivee.”  He gave his body for a pigeon.  (A pigeon landed in his lap, who was Agni, changed into a bird.  Dharmaraja, disguised himself as a hunter and asked for the pigeon back.  The Raja did not give the pigeon, as it had come to his shelter.  He then gave the hunter the meat of his own body in return.  Seeing Shivee’s generous nature, Dharmaraaj gave Shivee his flesh back and cured him).  Ghaalav, the great Muni, came to Usseenar and asked for the girl.  The Raja thought about his Dharma and gave the girl back along with 200 horses.  At that time, Ghaalav saw Garud come.  Garud said to Ghaalav: “I will collect these 600 horses.  There aren’t any others like these on earth.  In regards to the remaining 200 horses, give the girl to your Guru and fulfill your mission.”
