10-16 Stay at Kartarpur/ The Brahmin’s Son Dies
Sri Satguru ji stayed in Kartarpur. Many Sangats came from many directions to see Guru ji. On special days, there was a Mela. People from many places gathered and came. Saints, Mahants and Masands all came. They left their lands and works to come here. Sanyasis, Bairagis and Sikhs; all came. The people of different Sampradas looking for Brahmgyaan came to Guru ji. How many can I count? They all brought great gifts and came to Satguru ji’s court. Their wishes were all fulfilled after doing Guru ji’s Darshan. The Mela was always crowded. People from all 4 directions came. Guru ji gave them the wisdom of Satnam. The Sikhs would hear this wisdom and ingrain it in their minds. Some came for Brahmgyaan and received it. They connected to the bliss in their Aatma. Some asked for the 9 Niddhis and received it. The problems of their many births were all gone. Some received the 18 Siddhis. They were filled with unlimited powers by this. Everything was in Satguru ji’s court. Guru ji gave his servants what they wanted, generously. In this way, Guru ji spent many days in Kartarpur with joy. From the land of Balak Bukhara, the Masands brought great horses for Guru ji. They also brought expensive weapons along with silk clothes. Kashmir, Multan, Dhutta and Bhukher were great lands. The people from the South, East, Paharis, Tappis, Dighambhers, Jappis, Udaasis, Ghristis, Virakats and others all came to do the Darshan of Guru ji. The Sikhs that earned a lot of money, they brought their Dasvands to Guru ji. There was always a crowd where Guru ji’s Darbar was. The Masands from many lands brought money from their lands. Lakhs of Rajitpuns came. Gifts worth thousands came. Some came every 6 months to see Guru ji and some came after a year. They brought their Dasvands. Thousands of Masands came from many lands who brought their Sangats and Dasvands. The Dasvands were given to Guru ji along with expensive gifts. Wherever the Sikhs lived, they did the Simran of Guru ji. Guru ji helped the Sikhs in far off lands. Guru ji destroyed their many problems and troubles. He would then protect them in their afterlives. Guru ji’s glory grew by the day. His praises spread to many islands and far away lands. The Sikhi of the Guru spread to the many parts of the world. The Sikhs followed the righteous path. They all woke up at Amritvela and did the Simran of the Prabhoo while making many donations. They recited Gurbani everyday. The love of the Guru grew. Many stayed with Guru ji for many months. Meeting Guru ji, the people followed the righteous path.
The Mela of Vaisakhi came. People from all 4 directions came. The younger son of Bhai Bhagtoo ji came. His name was Bhai Jeevan ji. The elder son of Bhai Bhagtoo ji, Bhai Gora ji, his ways were of kings and warriors. Bhai Jeevan ji was of a saintly nature. Many Brars came with him to meet Guru ji. How many people can I count who came to the Darbar of the Satguru? The Mevras did the Ardaas standing up. They said the Ardaas of the Sikhs. The Masands collected the Dasvands and brought them for Satguru ji. They all did his Darshan, bringing many Sikhs. They bowed with their hands folded.
Some talked about the past, some asked about the future. The present wishes, they asked Guru ji that. Guru ji fulfilled everyone’s wishes. He was the giver of joy, the destroyer of problems. They said: “we are your servants. Protect us in every way.” People from every direction came. Thousands of leaders and Sikhs sat in the court. People sat to far off areas. They did the Darshan of Guru ji. Guru ji had love for all. Whoever he looked towards, that person was blessed. He was omniscient as he was present in every heart. He knew what everyone thought. He fulfilled everyone’s wishes, without them saying anything. The servants with desires, Guru ji was like the Kalapbrish for them. The Jagyasoos that came, they saw Vishnu inside Guru ji. The Mumukshus (ones who desire Mukti) came to do his Darshan and saw Guru ji as the sun of Gyaan. In this way, a great Mela occurred. The Servants did Guru ji’s Darshan and had their wishes fulfilled. The Sangat stayed for 5 days during Vaisakhi and still didn’t want to go home. The Sikhs got together and sat to discuss the meanings of Gurbani. They discussed the deeper translations and received bliss. They praised Satguru ji and said: “Dhan Dhan!” People then took leave from Guru ji after receiving Siropas. They were happy while leaving. They would go back to their homes with their Masands. The senior leaders of the Sangats would receive the Siropas and head back home. They asked for wealth and Sikhi from Guru ji. They left with bliss. The Sikhs went back to the islands in the oceans. People from many islands came. They praised Guru ji’s glories: “Satguru ji is the greatest giver of the world.”
After Guru ji spending many days with joy, one day, a son of a Brahmin had died. The boy was 12 years old. The boy was a “Guru Dasaundia,” (given to Guru ji that only served Guru ji, by staying with him or some other promise). He had died all of a sudden. The Brahmin only had that one son who was loved dearly. The Brahmin had raised the son with great struggles. He and was wife only lived to see the boy’s face. This alone gave them joy. They loved him more than their own life. When the boy died, the parents were in pain. The pain was deep. Their love was deep. The mother shouted out in pain: “oh son, why were you even born? You dying is more painful. You had seen nothing in this world yet.” The Brahim cried out in pain: “oh son, I raised you as Guru ji’s servant. Guru ji didn’t assist me. The Jumms came and took your age away.” In this way, the couple cried and shouted in pain. They were in deep sorrow. They took their son’s body in their lap and cried. The people of the city came to console them: “what is the use of being in sorrow now? Take him and cremate him. His age was not written by Vidhata. Why are you crying in pain? His age is done.” The couple heard this and said: “Sri Guru ji is our protector. We trust him deeply. Our son died all of a sudden. I won’t cremate him. I will place him at the door of Guru ji. Either the son should be alive again or the both of us will die at Guru ji’s door. We can’t live in this sorrow, without our son. There is no solution other than Guru ji.” They carried the body of their son and cried out loud. They came to Sri Guru Har Rai ji’s door. Guru ji was in the home. The dead son was placed at the front gate. The couple cried out loud.
10-17 The Brahmin’s Son Resurrected
The Brahmin and his wife cried. The people began to gather around them. The people tried to stop the couple from crying: “what will crying do?” Many came to Guru ji. Guru ji said: “what is the noise outside?” The Sikhs said: “a Brahmin’s son has died. The parents brought his body to your door. We tried to make them understand but they aren’t listening. They wanted us to tell you about the child. They want you to make their son alive again or they will give their lives. They aren’t listening to us.” Satguru Har Rai ji said: “tell them to take their son’s body away. A person spends their destiny on this earth. Whatever the Karma was from their previous births, that is how a person lives in their body in this world. The joy and pain one is to experience, the high and low that are born, the number of breaths one is to take, these things are determined by Vidhata before one is born. These are always with you. This is the way of Ishwar. No Devata can stop this.” The Masands heard this and folded their hands. They went back to the Brahmin to tell him Guru ji’s words.
The Masands said to the Brahmin: “oh Brahmin, take your son’s dead body away. How can the dead be raised again? If he is resurrected, then nobody would ever die. Who can go against the will of Prabhoo? The Prabhoo’s will resides over the whole universe.” The Brahmin heard this and said: “the Guru gave me this child. He has been a Dasaundia since birth. He belongs the Guru’s home by his body and mind. We have no other support in this world. If Guru ji doesn’t save him, where else should we go? If Guru ji won’t do this, then please take our lives as well.” The Brahmin and his wife cried. The wife slapped her head with her two hands. The Sikhs tried to console them but it was of no use. The Brahmin couple remained sitting at the door of Guru ji. They sat there for 7 and a half hours.
At Amritvela, Guru ji bathed and came to the court. The Masands and the Sikhs came to the court. Many of those Sikhs possessed great powers. They all came and sat with their hands folded. Guru ji was surrounded by all his servants and Sikhs. The Chaurs waived over his head. Guru ji sat on his Throne. His lotus eyes were filled with compassion and respect. He spread his divine and blessed vision on his Sikhs. He gave Brahmgyaan to his Sikhs who were deserving. Many Masands from different lands were with Guru ji. They were all sitting around Guru ji. The Brahmgyaani Sikhs were there in the court. It was like the moon surrounded by the stars. The discussion of the Brahmin began: “the couple is in a terrible condition. They are still there. They have no wish to live if their son is not raised. This is a big problem for them. They have deep faith in you. If you resurrect the boy, the problem will be gone. To raise the son will be a great deed. Otherwise the couple will die. The son was a Guru Dasaundia. Your great and compassion promise asks for this. The son is here and the couple is here. They will die here.” Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “whatever happens is by the will of Prabhoo. To be born and then dying is with every person. Till Akaal Purakh does not cast his compassion, only Jog, Bhagti and Brahmgyaan can destroy this cycle of taking births and dying. It is not good to resurrect the dead. Death comes to all. The rich and poor die everyday. People will come for this wish to our doors everyday.” The wise Brahmgyaani Sikhs heard this, who were generous, and said to Guru ji: “what you say is true but whoever comes to your shelter, one is not in pain anymore. You are omnipotent. You are Parmeshwar. You are able to do anything. You create and destroy. It’s in your hands. The Brahmin couple has been here for a long time. They are in great pain. Many people see them with pity. They all have hope. If you don’t raise the boy, they will all be upset and lose their faith. They will all speak nonsense according to their wisdom.” The whole court had this wish in their hearts. They all wanted the Brahmin’s son to be alive again. The Sikhs and Brahmins pleaded to Guru ji over and over again. Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard everyone’s heart and got a little angry. He spoke in a loud voice in the court: “if you want me to resurrect the boy, seeing the emotion from the Brahmin, then do a great act by my command as well: someone should sacrifice their remaining age and give it to the Brahmin’s son. The boy will be alive again.” The whole court heard the words of Guru ji. Everyone went quiet. Nobody said anything. They all lowered their heads. They thought hard. Nobody wanted to give their age. They all lowered their eyes. Nobody wanted to be ordered for this task. Nobody wanted to give their age. They all lost their patience and got scared. Satguru ji understood everyone’s wishes. After a while, Guru ji said: “all of you obey me. Why aren’t you being generous now? Give your age and I will raise the boy from the dead. Do this deed and you will be praised. The old couple is going to die. Save them. I will resurrect the boy and bless the one who has patience and courage to give their life. I will give them the highest status.” Guru ji made this second call in the court. Nobody responded. The people that spoke before, now everyone was quiet. Nobody raised their eyes. Nobody had the courage. Guru ji looked all around the court. He wanted to see which servant would give their life. This was the test. For about 20 mins, everyone sat quietly. Guru ji spoke a third time: “oh Sikhs, you spoke before. Why do you not want to do a good deed now? Only one person will give their life and save 3 in return.”
The son of Bhai Bhagtoo ji, Bhai Jeevan ji was sitting behind Guru ji. He got up and left the court, quietly. He was generous. His name was Bhai Jeevan. He went to the home and laid a rug of grass on the floor. He laid down on the grass and took a blanket over his body. He didn’t speak to anyone. He covered his whole body and wished to leave his body. He went to Sach Khand by the words of Guru ji. He wanted to stay at the feet of Guru ji. He thought to himself: “this life and the world is a myth. The only truth is death. Everyone has to die one day. I will make my life a success by sacrificing it for this good cause. There is nothing better than this.” He thought about this. He become great in this way. He gave his life. By Guru ji’s word, he received the highest status. He left his body by the power of Jog. His Pranas left and reached Sach Khand in an instant.
When Bhai Jeevan ji left his body, the son of the Brahmin woke up right away. He hugged his mother. The couple was happy. They were in bliss and amazed at the same time. This news reached Guru Har Rai ji.
10-18 The Katha of Shakar Gang
The people said to each other: “Dhan is the Guru, the complete Prabhoo. He resurrected the Brahmin’s son at his door just as Ram Chander ji resurrected a Brahmin’s son. It was the same way. We heard of a Katha about a Brahmin who brought his dead son’s body to Ram Chander ji’s door and pleaded for his life. Raghuvir ji did a great effort, as Naarad advised him. He made the boy alive and fulfilled his promise. The Guru did the same thing. He cut the Brahmin’s pain.” Men and women spoke as so. They all praised Guru ji. The news reached Guru ji’s court: “the Brahmin’s son is alive again!” Guru Har Rai ji heard of this, all of a sudden, and asked the Sikhs: “which Sikh gave his life for this? Who did this gracious act?” The people heard this and were surprised. People looked around and saw their friends and relatives. They all thought: “who gave his life?” Guru ji quickly asked: “why aren’t you telling me, who died? The boy is alive again. Who gave his life?” The Chobdhaars spoke: “everyone is still here but Bhai Bhagtoo ji’s son, Bhai Jeevan ji, got up and left. He hasn’t returned yet. He left from the back. Everyone else is still seated here. The Brahmin’s son is talked about. Bhai Jeevan ji was sitting behind your Throne. He left quietly after bowing to you.” Guru ji heard this and said: “go find out about him quickly. Tell me where he is, right away.” Three servants ran to the Dhera. The came inside the Dhera where Bhai Jeevan ji was staying. They looked inside and saw Bhai Jeevan ji. He was laying lifeless under a blanket, on top of a grass asana.
The servants ran back to Guru ji and said: “Bhai Jeevan ji is without Jeevan (life). He laid down with a blanket over his body. He gave his life for the Brahmin’s son.” Guru ji heard this and spoke out loud in anger for everyone to hear: “for my son, you have asked for the life of the Brahmin’s son. You sacrificed my son, my great Sikh. You didn’t accept the will of Prabhoo. You were all stubborn and asked for the life of the Brahmin’s son.” Guru ji scolded the Sikhs in the court. Guru Har Rai ji sent Sikhs toward the Dhera by saying: “if Bhai Jeevan has a son, bring him here. Go and find out. Go to the Brars that came with Bhai Jeevan and ask them: if Bhai Jeevan had a son, Guru ji is calling him to the Darbar. If he is here or at his village. If he is close by, bring him to me now. If he is at his home, call him here. We need to cremate his body.”
The Sikhs went to the Brars and asked about Bhai Jeevan ji’s son. The Brars came to Guru ji and stood in front of Guru ji. They said: “Bhai Jeevan ji had just turned 18 and brought his Muklava recently (during that time, the marriage happened at a very young age. The bride would be brought home to her husband once reaching a good age. This was called the Muklava). He doesn’t have a son yet. His wife is pregnant though. Bhai Jeevan ji had come here for your Darshan. He heard your words and gave his life.” Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “the child in his wife’s womb, name him “Sant Das.” His family will be great. They will grow. Sant Das will have many sons. From one, there will be thousands. Their family will spread far and wide. There won’t be another family growing like his.” Guru ji was proud and gave him many boons.
Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “I have seen this with my own eyes. Bhai Bhagtoo ji’s son, Bhai Gora ji, he had about 20 people in his family (this was about 200 years later; they had a total of 20 people consisting of sons and grandsons. Maharaja Bhai Uday Singh ji of Kaithal, was from this family). The son of Bhai Jeevan ji, Bhai Sant Das ji, his descendants, there are thousands of people in his family. Three villages were not enough for this family. Their family keeps growing by Guru ji’s boon. The whole world can see this.”
Bhai Jeevan ji’s body was cremated. He gave his life for a noble cause. The Satguru is great and so are his Sikhs, who obeyed the command of the Guru. The glory of Satguru Har Rai ji spread in every home like the Malti flower. The praise spread to far away lands like a bevy of swans flying off to far away lands; like moonlight over the earth, which was pleasing to the Chakor-like Sikhs. The Brahmin was really happy whose son was alive again. It was like a dead person getting Amrit.
In this way Guru ji stayed in Kartarpur. He did many great tasks there. He spent a long time there and blessed many of his servants and Sikhs. One day, Guru ji went to the Shakar Ganga well. Guru ji saw the well and noticed that the place was very pleasant there. Guru ji sat down near the well. It was almost evening. Guru ji took a bath there and washed up with joy. Guru ji had a Divaan there. In the Divaan, there were many older Sikhs there. Guru ji said to them: “Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, my elder, who did many gracious acts for the world; he had this well made. The way he had this well made and the reward of taking a bath here, if you know this, then tell me. Tell this place’s greatness.” The elderly people that were there, who had seen Guru Arjan Dev ji, they obeyed and folded their hands. They lowered their heads and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, you are omniscient. You know past and future. What can we say in front of you? We can obey and say what we saw. The secret and known things, you already know. You asked us so we will speak what we saw. Guru Arjan Dev ji, the Benevolent One, who founded Kartarpur, came here one day and sat here for a Divaan. He saw the nice land and thought about doing another great act. The place was already blessed in the past. He wanted to make a well for this area. He thought to himself: “people will come here everyday. They will do the Darshan of the Guru’s place and be in joy. They will bathe here. A well should be made here.” Guru ji commanded to bring sweets. Many Sikhs brought a lot of sweets here. The Masands obeyed and bought some sweet. They placed them in front of Guru ji. Guru ji called for tradesmen. Baba Buddha ji did the Ardaas. He did the Ardaas for the task to be successful. He said the name of all the Gurus. He thought of their forms and bowed with his hands folded. Guru Arjan Dev ji took a hoe and broke the ground. The Sangat that came for his Darshan, Guru ji then told them about the greatness of this place: “whoever comes here and does Seva they will receive the happiness of the Guru and their tasks will be fulfilled.” The Sikhs that stayed with Guru ji all the time, they began to do Seva. Whatever wish a Sikh had, their wish was fulfilled at the well. Bliss spread throughout the Sangat. They had the devotion of Seva in their hearts. The well was dug to the water quite quickly. A wooden base was made. Many Sikhs went down and began to construct the well wall. Cement and choona was used to make the wall solid. The wall was made of bricks. The wall was made quite high. Many did Seva of the well. The tradesmen worked with great skill. The well wall and base were lowered. The top of the well was made after that. Guru ji then praised the well: “I have brought the water of Ganga here. The well is pure. Just as taking the bath in the Ganga washes away your sins and makes you pure, the same will be for this well water.” Sri Satguru ji bathed here everyday and praised the well many times. For this reason, this well is praiseworthy. Many Sangats come here and bathe. This is how the Master, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, had this well built.” Sri Guru Har Rai ji heard this and became happy. He said: “Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji.” Everyone heard this. Guru ji then got up and came to his Dhera. He ate and then rested for the night. He woke up at Amritvela and bathed.
10-19 Dheermal Speaks to Guru ji about Ram Rai
Baba Ram Rai ji wrote a letter to Baba Dheermal. He praised himself and spoke about what happened with the Badshah. He wrote: “listen Taya ji, look at this backward way. I am writing to you as it happened. Nobody was ready to go and see the Badshah. Nobody had the patience to go. They were all afraid of the Emperor’s strict ways. Aurangzeb did not have faith on any other Sadhoo. He had many saints killed who had powers. This is not a secret thing. I was young at that time. I obeyed Pitha Guru ji and got ready without a doubt to go. I had faith on Satguru ji’s words. I was not afraid of dying. I obeyed the command and set off to Delhi. I reached the city of Turks where the enemy of saints was. He was corrupt. He had sinned before. He tried to cheat me first. He made me make a dead goat alive again. I had collected the skin and bones of the goat that night. I sent one leg to the Qazi. In the morning, they insisted on getting the goat back. They wanted me to make the goat alive again. If I hadn’t kept the skin and bones, how would it have been alive again? The corrupt Turk would have become our enemy then. Everyone knows the corrupt Chavgatha. He then sent me a Chola laced with poison. If anyone else was to wear it, they would have died. He did many other things to test me. Everyone knows of these stories. I made an effort to take the Emperor under me. He began to follow me. I was on good terms with the Badshah and therefore my praises spread throughout the world. We became good friends. I used my wisdom to show him many types of miracles. The people of his court were corrupt. I won them all. They tried to speak against the Guru’s home many times but I won. They tried to argue with me many times. I defeated them with my power and wisdom. I made Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s name illuminate. Pitha ji got mad at me for something really small. If I hadn’t had sad what I said, the whole court would have ruined my relationship with the Emperor. Pithaji sent me a message telling me not to face him again. He told me to go wherever. He didn’t see me deserving for the Gurta Ghaddi. He accused me heavily. My Pitha ji, the Satguru, is your brother. Nothing is ruined. Pithaji wants to give the greatness to the younger son. He will give him the Gurta Ghaddi. You should speak to him about this. I don’t want the family to be ruined after Pithaji. You need to solve this problem. Everyone should see that everything is good. Look at our elders. Sri Guru Ramdas ji was great. He didn’t see his son as deserving. He gave the Gurta Ghaddi to the younger son, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji. He made this decision while he was alive but the conflict still lasted. Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji had to go to the enemy’s home and leave his body due to many tortures. Prithi Chand did many bad things to bother him. He didn’t let Guru ji sit in peace and joy. Everyone knows about this. Pithaji is doing the same thing now. Am I not equal to Prithi Chand? He couldn’t get to the Emperor. I am very close to the Emperor. I can do whatever I want to. I can cause any conflict I wish to. You and Dadi Neti ji should speak to my father. Speak to him and have this discussion. Ask him why is he causing a fight in the home. It will be like Prithi Chand and Guru Arjan Dev ji’s fight. I wish to take the Gurta Ghaddi. It’s my right! How can the younger son take it?” In this way, the letter was written and sent to Dheermal.
Baba Ram Rai’s chest was burning with jealousy. The messenger bowed to Dheermal and gave him the letter. He said: “I bow to you and I am sure you will think of a solution. Your nephew sent this letter.” Baba Dheermal opened the letter and read it. He figured out that his nephew was his friend. Dheermal gave the messenger hope and kept him with him.
One day, Dheermal went to Mata Neti ji and said to her: “if we speak openly, we can avoid a conflict. What is bad, that shouldn’t be done. Tell Sri Guru Har Rai ji to give the Gurta Ghaddi to the elder, Ram Rai. He is wise and he is eligible. Guru ji should think about this. Ram Rai has made Aurangzeb follow him. What else is there left?” Dheermal convinced his mother. Both of them then went to Guru Har Rai ji to speak to him.
Mata Nati ji and Baba Dheermal saw Guru Har Rai ji sitting alone. Guru ji had them both sit with respect. Mata Nati ji said: “you are wise and omnipotent in every way. From a young age, by your virtues, you impressed your grandfather. He left his wise sons and gave you the Gurta Ghaddi with love. We can’t say anything to you. Whatever you do is good. You can’t do wrong. Your elder brother and I have come to make a request to you.” Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “say what is in your heart. You are my mother and he is my elder brother. I will listen to you.” Baba Dheermal spoke: “we will say what is good for you. We want you to think long term and thing about the past. What Guru Ramdas ji did, because of that, there was a great conflict in the home. He gave the Ghaddi to the younger son. Prithi Chand got into a fight. He was corrupt and jealous. He kept arguing till his end. He called out for justice all the time. He gave pain to Guru Arjan Dev ji in many ways. He thought of new things. He tried to make Guru ji small. He didn’t see his shortcomings. He kept fighting within relatives. He died fighting in this conflict. He never got together with his brother with love. I thought about that and came to you. This will happen in your home as well. You rejected your deserving son. He is on good terms with the Emperor. He controls the Badshah. He can complete all of the tasks of the home. He did a lot of good things for the Guru’s home. He illuminated the name of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He made many new Sikhs. He is worshipped in many lands. He is omnipotent. He is rich and he is powerful. He is wise and knows politics. The Turk Badshah is in his hands. If you don’t give him the Gurta Ghaddi, there won’t be peace. The conflict and jealousy will increase. The younger son is young. The fight will ruin the Gurta Ghaddi. Ram Rai will ruin the Gurta Ghaddi as he is powerful. Why do you wish the sons to fight? This will be bad. It will cause problems. The home will be ruined. It will be a big fight. What good do you see in this? Make the elder one the Guru of the world. The younger should obey him. There will be peace after you. There won’t be any conflict.” Guru Har Rai ji understood their wishes and heard his mother’s and brother’s words. He was about to get ready to speak. Sri Prabhoo Kartar ji got ready to speak.
10-20 Guru ji’s Response/ Coming Back to Kiratpur
Guru Har Rai ji spoke to his mother and brother: “listen Mata ji and Bhrata ji, the Gurta Ghaddi is not in anyone’s hands. It’s only in Parmeshwar’s hands. It can’t be attained by any effort. Only the Master is the giver. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the highest and greatest. He tested the virtues of Gyaan. Nobody is bigger than him. He is greater than great. Everyone obeys his command. One has to follow his command without thinking. His sons were great but they didn’t obey his command. Guru Nanak Dev ji saw this as a fault and gave the Gurta Ghaddi to his servant. Sri Guru Angad Dev ji was given the Gurta Ghaddi. Guru Angad Dev ji’s sons, Dasu and Datu, they were great but they treated Guru Amardas ji badly by showing him their ego. They were jealous of him. They didn’t have humility in their minds like Guru Amardas ji. Guru Angad Dev ji didn’t see them as deserving. He didn’t give the Ghaddi to his sons. Guru Amardas ji had two sons whom he tested. They didn’t obey their father. Guru Ramdas ji was without ego. He had no jealousy or other faults. Guru Amardas ji seated Guru Ramdas ji on his seat and told everyone to bow to his feet. Guru Ramdas ji’s elder son was Prithi Chand. He was proud of his wisdom. He was egotistical. He looked down upon everyone. He gathered a lot of money. He was clever by worldly means. He was not wise, content or calm. He was not great. Guru Ramdas ji wrote a Shabad in reference to him, which is written in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. For four generations the jealous one did not get the Gurta Ghaddi. The jealous ones get nothing in this world or in the next world. They get no respect for walking the wrong path. The one who follows the Guru’s command; does the Seva and is full of virtues; that person received the Gurta Ghaddi. He kills the ego. This has been the tradition from the beginning. I didn’t do anything new. I sent Ram Rai with many powers in his words. Whatever he did, I let him be, showing his powers. He showed new powers everyday. The fearless and strong ones accepted Ram Rai as stronger. He was the strongest and most fearless. Listen to what he did next: Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Bani, which is accepted by the 14 Loks, bowing their heads as it is written, which destroys the ego; when Ram Rai was asked about the translations of the Saloks of Gurbani, he knew the correct meanings but he changed the meanings to impress the Turk Emperor. He wanted money from him. He changed the meanings of Gurbani for the Emperor. I didn’t like this. He was able to do anything he wanted to. He didn’t trust his own powers. He had so much wealth and following but look what he did! He couldn’t get enough of it. He had no shortages of anything. He was being worshiped by so many people. The Gurta Ghaddi has to go to another home for the future to form out the way it needs to. The Parmeshwar instigated these events for that reason. What needed to happen, happened. Nobody can control this. Ram Rai is making a useless effort.”
Mata ji and Dheermal heard Guru ji’s words but were not satisfied. They were not calm by his words. They spoke other things in praise of Ram Rai. Guru Har Rai Sahib ji gave them his responses. Mata ji and Dheermal ji didn’t understand Guru Sahib ji’s reasoning. They kept saying everyday: “you should give the Gurta Ghaddi to the elder son who is wise.” The wise Guru saw them praise Ram Rai everyday. He thought to himself after a few days: “they are on Ram Rai’s side. They won’t stop talking about him. I should leave from here. It is not good to keep hearing what is not right. They say the same thing everyday. They don’t think about the right thing. What they say is not right. They are not thinking with wisdom. I can’t listen to them anymore. This will lower the radiance of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.” Guru ji thought about this at night and went to sleep.
At Amritvela, Guru Har Rai ji bathed and told the Sikhs: “sound the Nagaras and get everyone ready to move. Saddle the horses. We should leave before sunrise.” Guru ji said this and called for his weapons. He wore his sword and shield. He wore his Chola of 101 pleats. It was of a fine fabric.
